You have printed it, bound it, handed it in and felt the strange flatness that follows. The urge to thank the person who got you there arrives in the same week. It is a good instinct with one problem attached: the thesis is now being assessed, and your guide has not quite stopped being part of that.
Quick answers — read this first
Should I give my PhD guide a gift after submission? You can, but keep it small, and understand what is still running. Submission is a milestone rather than the end — the thesis goes to examiners, your guide is still involved in the process, and a substantial present arriving in that window is something they have to think about rather than simply accept. A card alone is always safe. If you want an object with it, keep it to a ₹749 to ₹849 reed diffuser for their cabin. The larger gesture belongs after the defence, and cleanest of all after the degree is conferred.

Is it too early to thank my supervisor right after submitting? It is never too early to thank them in writing. A letter can be handed over the same afternoon and has no complication attached to it at all, because there is nothing in it for anybody to weigh up. What is early is the object, particularly an expensive one. The assessment is live, and the rule about professional distance is at its tightest exactly when somebody still has a say in your result. Give the words now and the object later. Nothing is lost by the wait and the second gesture lands better for it.

What is an appropriate post-submission gift? Something modest for their room, or nothing but a card. A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749 to ₹849 is about right: it sits on a shelf, needs no power, and says nothing about the person. Avoid anything worn, anything expensive and anything that arrives with an audience. Hand it over privately at the end of a meeting rather than in front of the lab. And check what your institution allows, because some universities and institutes have written limits on gifts to staff that apply whatever the occasion.
The short answer
Short answer: Give the card now and the object later. Submission is a milestone but the assessment is still live, so anything substantial handed over at this point puts your guide in the position of weighing it up. If you do give something now, keep it to a modest room gift around ₹749 to ₹849 and hand it over privately.
The pick: SOSA Morning Freshness at ₹749 if you are giving something now — or, honestly, a written card on its own and the object after the result.
Next step: Tell us where you are in the process and we will say plainly whether to wait. Ask SOSA to help choose a gift.
Submitted is not finishedThe thesis is in. The assessment is still runningA card can be given today with no complicationKeep any object small until the result is outThe warmer gift belongs after the defenceCheck your institution's rules before you buy
Waiting a few weeks costs nothing and removes the only real objection to the gift you already want to give.
Straight answer
Can you give a PhD guide a gift straight after submission, or should you wait?
Say the awkward part first: submission is a milestone, not the end. The bound copy leaves your hands and the assessment begins. Examiners are appointed, reports are written, a date gets fixed, and through all of it your guide remains part of a process that decides your result. Nothing about that is sinister and it does not mean thanks are forbidden. It means the shape of the thanks matters. A gift handed over while somebody still has a hand in the assessment of your work reads differently from the identical gift handed over afterwards, and that difference is not something you can fix with a card explaining your intentions. So split it. Give the words now. A written note can go across the desk the same week and has nothing in it for anybody to weigh — no value, no obligation, nothing that any policy covers. Then give the object after the result. If you are moving cities, post it. If you want to be sure, wait until the degree is formally conferred, which is the cleanest moment there is. If you are determined to give something now, make it small enough to be unremarkable. A 50ml reed diffuser between ₹749 and ₹849 is the right band: Morning Freshness with its lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus, or Mountain Breeze if their cabin suits pine and cedar. It goes on a shelf, it needs no power, it asks nothing of anybody's body, and it can be accepted without a second thought — which is the entire specification for a gift at this point in the process. Avoid anything worn, avoid anything that arrives in front of an audience, and avoid moving up a price tier because the relationship was long. Check what your institution allows as well; many universities and research institutes have written rules on gifts to staff and some set a value limit that applies regardless of occasion. None of this is a claim that any object affects how your work is assessed — it plainly does not, and that is precisely why the appearance is worth protecting. If you want a second view on the timing, ask us to help choose a gift.
Give the letter this week and the object after the result. If you must give something now, keep it small enough that nobody has to think about it.
If you are giving today, SOSA Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the right size of gesture — Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus, on a shelf, needing nothing from anyone.

What to actually buy, by budget

A note on size that matters more than usual here. Stay at 50ml. A 130ml bottle is a better fit for a large room but it is also visibly a bigger present, and at this point in the process the smaller object is the better one for reasons that have nothing to do with the room. Buy the larger bottle later, if you buy it at all.

Three things about this particular week

Three things that are specific to the gap between submission and result.

1
What is still live
Your guide has not stopped being part of the assessment
The relief of submission makes it feel finished, and administratively it is not. Examiners have to be appointed and to report; a date gets set; corrections may come back. Through that period your guide sits somewhere between advocate and assessor, and their position is not one you want to complicate. A present in that window is not a scandal, but it is something the recipient has to think about, and the whole aim of a thank-you gift is that it requires no thought. This is the plainest possible argument for waiting, and it is worth saying explicitly because nobody else will say it to you: keep it modest now, because the assessment is still running.
Tip: If you are about to leave the city, say so in the card and post the object after the result. That reads as considerate rather than as a delay.
2
What you can give today
A letter has no value attached, which is what makes it safe
The one gesture with no complication in it is writing. A card or a letter carries nothing that a gift policy covers, nothing anybody has to declare, and nothing that could be read as an attempt at influence. It is also, in this particular relationship, the better half of the gesture: after four or five years you can write things nobody else could write, and that specificity is the part a guide keeps. Name the chapter that took three attempts, the conference application you would not have sent, the argument you lost and later used. Give that this week, while it is all still close, and let the object follow at a moment when it does not need explaining.

What belongs later
The warmer gift has a proper moment and this is not it
There is a version of this gift that is larger and warmer — a 130ml bottle, a reed duo from the whole lab, a worn fragrance for a guide whose taste you know well after years of working together. All of it is appropriate, and all of it belongs after a successful defence or after the degree is conferred. Holding it back is not withholding thanks; the thanks already went across the desk in writing. It simply puts the larger gesture at a moment when it is uncomplicated for the person receiving it. If your cohort is planning something together, use the waiting period to organise it properly rather than to buy something early.
The SOSA principle
There is no hurry. A thank-you given six weeks late with the result in hand is a better thank-you than the same one given six weeks early with the examination still open.
That is a point about timing and appearances, and not a claim that any gift has ever affected how a thesis was assessed.
SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser
If you are giving something this week: Morning Freshness at ₹749 — lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus. Small, plain, and it needs nothing from the person who receives it.

Choosing the register

The post-submission timeline as a short table, since the whole question here is when rather than what.

The SOSA plan
When to give what
The moment What fits it
SOSA Morning Freshness Reed DiffuserThe week you submit
A written card and nothing else. No value attached, nothing anybody has to weigh up, and it can be handed over today.
Between submission and viva
At most a small room gift around ₹749 to ₹849, handed over privately. The assessment is still live.
After a successful defence
The warmer gift: a 130ml reed, a duo from the group, or a worn fragrance where you know the taste.
After the degree is conferred
Anything appropriate within your institution's rules. This is the cleanest moment of the four.

The moment after the viva gets its own page in a gift after a successful defence, and the whole appropriateness question is laid out in appropriate fragrance gifts for guides and mentors. SOSA is an independent Indian brand with no affiliation to any perfume house, designer or university, and no institution is a SOSA customer.

SOSA Adaa Attar
The lightest worn option, after the result: Adaa — bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac. No oudh at all. 3ml ₹379, six to eight hours on skin.
Words now, object later
A card this week, a reed from ₹749 when the result is in, and nothing that anybody has to think twice about
See the SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser Book a scenting plan
The gift is not late because you waited for the result. It is better because you did, and the letter you handed over in the meantime was the half that mattered.

What to buy now, and what to buy later

Buy small now, or buy nothing now and properly later. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

SOSA Adaa Attar Around ₹379 to ₹399 A 3ml attar — small, but worn, so only where you know the taste and preferably only after the viva. ₹379

SOSA Garden Bloom Reed Diffuser Around ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 A 130ml reed. Buy this after the defence rather than now; it is visibly the bigger present. ₹799

Check what your institution allows before buying anything, at any stage. Many universities and research institutes publish rules on gifts to staff, sometimes with a value cap, and those rules apply whether the thesis is under examination or not. There is nothing in the SOSA range under ₹300, and the ₹299 bottles are refills for a machine rather than a gift. We make no promise about delivery timing, wrapping or personalisation.

A note from Sonal

The week after submission is an odd one, and people do slightly out-of-character things in it. They have been holding a project up for years, it suddenly leaves their hands, and the instinct is to close every loop at once. That is usually when somebody writes to me asking what to buy their guide, and the honest answer is not a product recommendation. It is that half of what they want to do can be done today and half of it should wait a few weeks.

I say this knowing it costs me the sale more often than not. A card handed across a desk the same afternoon does more here than anything I sell, and an object that arrives while the examination is open is a small burden dressed up as a kindness. Write the letter now. Buy the reed when the result is in, and buy it for the room rather than the person, which is the easier of the two decisions anyway.

A scented object is an ambience decision, and SOSA makes no outcome, therapeutic or medical claim about it; nothing here masks an odour, and no product of ours is described as hypoallergenic. Alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts about the attars rather than skin or allergy claims — patch-test, and give the room where somebody may be sensitive. Whether fragrance belongs in a shared department space is the room owner's judgement. Made in India, with a portion of every order supporting girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Is it appropriate to give my PhD guide a gift right after submission?
A card, yes, straight away. An object, only if it is small. Submission is a milestone but the thesis is still being assessed and your guide remains part of that process, so anything substantial arriving now is something they have to weigh up. A 50ml reed at Rs 749 to Rs 849 is the largest thing I would hand over in that window.
Why does the timing matter so much?
Because your guide sits between advocate and assessor until the result is in, and a present during that period reads differently from the identical present afterwards. That is about appearances rather than anybody's intentions, and appearances are exactly what professional distance protects. Waiting for the defence or for conferral removes the question entirely and costs you nothing.
What can I give today with no complication at all?
A written letter. It carries no value, nothing anybody has to declare and nothing that could be read as influence, and after four or five years you can write things nobody else could write. Name the chapter that took three attempts and the argument you lost and later used. Give that now and let the object follow.
Should I buy the 50ml or the 130ml?
The 50ml, if you are giving before the result. The larger bottle suits a bigger room but it is also visibly a bigger present, and at this point the smaller object is better for reasons that have nothing to do with the space. Buy the 130ml after a successful defence, or let the group buy a duo instead.
I am leaving the city before my viva. What then?
Hand over the letter before you go and post the object after the result. Say in the card that you are sending something later if you want to. Leaving town is a good reason to give the words early and no reason at all to bring the object forward into the examination window.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
For a cabin rather than a home: Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry, unsweet, and about as far from a personal gift as a fragrance gets. From ₹849.
Give the words now and the object later
SOSA — Clinic Scenting for scholars between submission and result
A 50ml reed from ₹749 if something has to go with the card today. A 130ml from ₹1,249 once the result is in. A 3ml attar from ₹379 where you know the taste. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
