Three words come up in almost every brief I receive from an appliance showroom: fresh, woody, and hotel-like. Two of them are fragrance directions. The third is not a scent at all, and mistaking it for one is how showrooms end up smelling like a lobby.
Quick answers — read this first
Fresh, woody or hotel-like - which is best for a premium appliance showroom? Fresh or woody, decided by the finishes rather than by taste. Fresh - Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus - belongs on a white, glass, steel or pale-grey floor. Woody - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - belongs on walnut, oak, travertine, dark stone and black glass. Hotel-like is not a third family; it is a description of a fragrance that is the same every day and never announces itself, which is a level and a consistency you can apply to either of the first two.

Why is a hotel-lobby fragrance wrong for a showroom? Because a lobby is set for a guest who walks through in two minutes, and its level is meant to be noticed. A showroom is judged by the advisor who stands there nine hours and the client who compares finishes for ninety minutes, and it is built of steel, glass and stone that bounce fragrance with almost no fabric to absorb it. The consistency of a good hotel is worth copying. The level is not; a showroom sits well below it.

What is the honest product answer? Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Morning Freshness reed (Rs 749) for the fresh direction or one Mountain Breeze reed (Rs 849) for the woody one, at the desk. From about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, one SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999), waterless, on a timer with a key-lock - the lock is what makes the consistency people call hotel-like a fact. From about 3,000 sq ft, one SOSA Angaan (Rs 25,999). Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting; SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, dwell time or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance.
The short answer
Short answer: fresh for white, glass and steel floors; woody for walnut, stone and dark glass; and hotel-like is a level and a consistency, not a family - copy the consistency, never the lobby level, which is too high for a floor of hard surfaces.
The pick: one Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) or Morning Freshness (₹749) at the desk under about 750 sq ft; one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) per connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft, locked at the level the team agreed; one SOSA Angaan (₹25,999) past about 3,000 sq ft.
Next step: list the five biggest surfaces on your floor - fronts, worktops, floor, feature wall, appliance run - and we will tell you which direction wins and where the source goes - ask for a showroom scenting plan.

Straight answer
Fresh, woody or hotel-like: what fragrance works best in a premium appliance showroom?
Take them one at a time, because they are not three options from the same menu. Fresh is a direction: citrus, mint, eucalyptus, a clean mineral edge. On an appliance floor it belongs where the materials are cool - white or pale-grey lacquer, handleless fronts, clear glass, brushed steel, a pale stone floor. In the SOSA range it is Morning Freshness, Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus, and on that floor it reads as a white kitchen with the window open. Fresh has one trap. Near a dishwasher display or a laundry bay, lemon and eucalyptus can read as detergent, and on a warm floor of walnut they read as if the room had just been disinfected. Fresh is right on a cool floor and faintly wrong everywhere else. Woody is the other direction: dry woods, cedar, pine, sage, a little tea. It belongs where the materials are warm or dark - walnut and oak veneer, travertine, dark quartz, bronze, black or smoked glass. In the SOSA range it is Mountain Breeze, Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar, and on that floor wood in the air and wood in the room read as one material. Woody has its own trap, which is drift toward amber. Owners of dark floors want warmth to match the lighting, and warm on warm turns heavy within a week; the woody direction works on a dark floor precisely because it is dry and cuts the warmth rather than doubling it. So far, then, a simple rule: count your finishes; cool takes fresh, warm takes woody, mixed defaults to woody held quieter. Now the third word. Hotel-like is not a fragrance family. When an owner says they want the showroom to smell hotel-like, they are almost never describing a note. They are describing the experience of walking into a good hotel and meeting the same fragrance, at the same level, on every visit, without ever being able to say what it is. That is two things - consistency and restraint - and both are worth wanting. But the moment hotel-like is treated as a scent, it turns into an actual lobby fragrance, and a lobby fragrance is designed for a guest passing through in two minutes, set at a level meant to register on the way to the lift. A showroom is the opposite room. The people who matter are the advisor who breathes it for nine hours and the architect who compares finishes at the specification table for ninety minutes, and the floor is steel, glass and stone with nothing soft to absorb anything. A lobby level on that floor is loud by the second display and unbearable by the fourth hour. So: copy the hotel's consistency, refuse the hotel's level, and apply both to whichever of the first two directions your finishes chose. Consistency is a mechanical fact rather than an intention, which is why the machine matters here. The SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, one per connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft, has a 1h/4h/8h/24h timer so the hours are the same every day, adjustable intensity so the level is found with the team, and a key-lock so it stays found. It is waterless, so it adds no moisture and leaves no residue. Under about 750 sq ft the direction is carried by a reed at the desk, ₹749 or ₹849, or a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 with the honest note that it is water-based. Past about 3,000 sq ft one SOSA Angaan at ₹25,999, never two Vaayus in one air. Two directions lose before the judging starts: anything sweet, gourmand or edible, because the hob and coffee counter own those smells, and anything heavily floral, which reads as a candle shop on a floor of appliances. What a premium home-appliance showroom should smell like sets the register this page chooses within, and how to choose a signature scent for a premium appliance brand is the method for testing the winner. And the frame: fragrance is an interiors and hospitality decision, like lighting or music. SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish on display. It is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction, and the demo kitchen and tasting counter stay unscented. Ask for a showroom scenting plan with your five biggest surfaces listed.
Fresh (Morning Freshness, Rs 749) for white, glass and steel; woody (Mountain Breeze, Rs 849) for walnut, stone and dark glass; hotel-like is a level and a consistency, not a family - copy the consistency, refuse the lobby level. Vaayu (Rs 11,999) from about 1,500 sq ft holds either direction under a lock.
Whichever direction the finishes choose, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 holds it at the same level every day across up to 1000m³ of connected floor - which is the only part of hotel-like worth copying.

What each direction runs on

Either direction is carried by a reed at a desk or a Vaayu across a floor; the difference is size, not scent. The images link to the product pages so every figure below can be checked.

SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
The woody direction - walnut, stone, dark glass - under about 750 sq ft
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar - the driest scent SOSA makes, and the one that wins on most premium appliance floors because most of them are built from warm or dark materials. Alcohol-free, coconut-derived base, six fibre reeds, flip weekly. 50ml Rs 849 lasts 6-8 weeks at a reception desk; 130ml Rs 1,349 lasts 14-18 weeks. Reaches one desk zone.
From ₹849
SOSA Vaayu
Either direction, held the same every day - from about 1,500 sq ft
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - on one unit, Rs 11,999. The three things that make consistency a fact: a 1h/4h/8h/24h timer for the hours, adjustable intensity for finding the level with the team, a key-lock for keeping it. No water, no residue; under 38dB; wall or HVAC mount so the source sits where the AC will carry it.

Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar in an alcohol-free, phthalate-free, coconut-derived base. 50ml at Rs 849 lasts 6-8 weeks; 130ml at Rs 1,349 lasts 14-18 weeks. Six fibre reeds - the reeds are a volume control, never a range control. Reaches one desk or seating zone. Made in India.

The three directions, judged one by one - and two that lose

Each of the three words in the brief gets its own hearing, then the two directions that are ruled out before the judging starts, and finally the way to settle it on your own floor.

1
Fresh
Right on a cool floor, faintly wrong on a warm one
Fresh means citrus, mint, eucalyptus, a mineral cleanness, and it has one natural home on an appliance floor: cool materials. White or pale-grey lacquer, handleless fronts, a glass splashback, a brushed-steel appliance run, pale stone underfoot. On that floor Morning Freshness - Malabar lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus - reads as a white kitchen with the window open, which is the ten o'clock kitchen the whole vertical is aiming at. Two traps. On a warm floor of walnut and dark stone the same register goes clinical, as if the room had been wiped down with something. And near a dishwasher or laundry display lemon and eucalyptus can read as detergent, so a floor that is mostly those appliances goes woody instead - the washing-machine display page and the dishwasher studio page both make that call. Fresh also runs at the quietest level of anything on this page, because glass and steel bounce it and nothing absorbs it.
Test: if the floor is white, glass and steel, fresh. If it is anything else, keep reading.
2
Woody
Right on a warm or dark floor, and the default when the floor is mixed
Woody means dry woods - cedar, pine, sage, a little tea - and it belongs where the materials are warm or dark: walnut and oak veneer, travertine, dark quartz, bronze trim, black or smoked glass, graphite. Mountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage, Indian cedar - is the driest scent SOSA makes, and on that floor wood in the air and wood in the room read as one thing. It is also the default when a floor is mixed, which most large centres are, because cedar held quietly against white is only slightly warm, whereas lemon against walnut is clearly clinical. The trap is amber. Dark floors with warm lighting make owners want a warm fragrance to match, and a soft amber or a tonka-led wood on a dark floor turns heavy within a week. The woody direction works on a dark floor because it is dry - it cuts the warmth rather than doubling it. What scent direction works with a dark, ultra-modern display is the dark-floor case in full; what fragrance suits a high-end kitchen studio is the pairing at studio scale.
SOSA Mountain Breeze Reed Diffuser
Mountain Breeze - pine, sage and cedar. The woody direction, and the one most premium floors end up on.

3
Hotel-like
A level and a consistency - not a family, and not a lobby
When an owner says hotel-like, ask what they mean and the answer is nearly always the same: it was the same every time I walked in, and I could never say what it was. That is two properties, consistency and restraint, and neither is a note. The mistake is to go looking for a hotel fragrance to buy, because what you find is a lobby fragrance - built to register on a guest crossing forty feet of marble in two minutes, at a level designed to be noticed. A showroom is the opposite room: judged by the advisor who stands there nine hours and the architect at the specification table for ninety minutes, on a floor of steel and glass that bounces everything. A lobby level here is loud by the second display. So take the two properties and refuse the level. Consistency comes from a timer that owns the hours and a key-lock that owns the setting, both on the Vaayu; restraint comes from setting it so nobody at the desk can name it. The Jaipur page meets the same hotel-level trap through heritage-hotel expectations, and how strong fragrance should be inside an experience centre is the level in full.
Rule: copy a hotel's consistency, never its level. A showroom sits well below a lobby.
4
The two that lose
Sweet, gourmand and edible; heavy floral
Two directions are ruled out before the judging starts, and it is worth saying why so that nobody in the building reopens the question. Anything sweet, gourmand or edible - vanilla, coffee, caramel, bakery, warm spice, tonka dressed as amber - is out because in a kitchen-appliance showroom the hob, the oven and the coffee counter own food smells, and an edible fragrance merges with the demonstration into a third smell nobody chose. In the SOSA range Fresh Brew is a good coffee-vanilla product pointed at exactly the wrong room. Anything heavily floral - rose, jasmine, tuberose, a garden bouquet - is out because on a floor of appliances it reads as a candle shop or a domestic air freshener, and a showroom designed as a home should not smell like a shop that sells scent. Garden Bloom and Evening Calm are good products for other rooms. The best fragrance for a luxury kitchen-appliance showroom carries the edible exclusion in full.
Test: if a visitor could ask where the candles are sold, or what is baking, the direction is wrong.
5
Settling it
Count the finishes, test the winner at the desk, then lock it
The decision does not need a blotter. Write down the five largest surfaces a visitor sees - fronts, worktops, floor, feature wall, the appliance run - and mark each cool or warm. Cool wins, fresh; warm wins, woody; a tie goes to woody, held a step below the first instinct. Then test the winner as a reed at the reception desk for two weeks in the real air of the floor, with the real AC running and the real team breathing it, and let the team vote at five in the afternoon. Only then a machine: a Vaayu per connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft, an Angaan past about 3,000, locked at the level the team agreed. The hotel-like part of the brief - the consistency - comes from the lock and the timer, not from anything in the bottle. And through all of it, one fact about the merchandise: SOSA makes no claim about what any direction does to an appliance or a finish; the only product fact is that the Vaayu is waterless, adds no moisture and leaves no residue.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu holds whichever direction wins at the same level every day - timer, adjustable intensity, key-lock.
See SOSA Vaayu →
The SOSA principle
Fresh and woody are directions chosen by the finishes; hotel-like is a consistency held by a lock, and the one thing never to borrow from a hotel is its level.
Cool floors take fresh. Warm floors take woody. Either one, the same every day, and quieter than any lobby.
SOSA Morning Freshness Reed Diffuser
The fresh direction, for a cool floor: Morning Freshness, ₹749 for 50ml, lemon, mint and eucalyptus - three reeds to start on glass and steel.

Direction by direction: what each one does on an appliance floor

Here are the five words that turn up in briefs, judged side by side. Three rows are directions, one is a property mistaken for a direction, and the last two are the exclusions.

The SOSA judging
Fresh, woody, hotel-like and the two that lose, side by side

A lobby fragrance, bought because it smelled hotel-like
Set for a two-minute crossing on marble; loud by the second display on a floor of steel and glass. The consistency is worth copying; the level is not.
Sweet, gourmand, edible - vanilla, coffee, caramel, spice
Out before the judging. The hob and coffee counter own food smells; an edible fragrance makes a third smell with the demonstration.
Heavy floral - rose, jasmine, tuberose
Out. Reads as a candle shop or a domestic air freshener on a floor of appliances.

The two winners each have their own pages: what fragrance complements a minimal European-style showroom for the fresh direction on a white floor, what scent direction works with a dark, ultra-modern display for the woody direction on a dark one, and should a premium appliance experience centre have a signature fragrance for the consistency that people mean by hotel-like. SOSA makes no claim that any direction changes footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish.

SOSA Vaayu
Either direction, the same every day: SOSA Vaayu, ₹11,999, waterless, 1000m³, timer and key-lock - the consistency without the lobby level.
Fresh or woody by finish - held the same every day, quieter than a lobby
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 carries either direction across 1,500-3,000 sq ft under a timer and a key-lock. Send your five biggest surfaces; we will judge the direction.

Hotel-like is the one word in a brief that is not a scent. What the owner remembers from the hotel is that it never changed. Copy that, and leave the lobby level in the lobby.

A note from Sonal

I have learned to hear the word hotel-like as a question rather than an answer. When an owner says it, I ask which hotel, and then I ask what it smelled of, and they almost never know. What they know is that it was the same every time and that they could not name it. That is the whole brief, and it has nothing to do with a fragrance family. I could deliver it with cedar or with lemon. What I cannot deliver it with is a lobby fragrance, because a lobby is set for a guest crossing marble in two minutes, and your showroom is judged by someone who stands on stone and glass for nine hours.

So I split the word in two. The consistency I give them with a machine - the timer on the Vaayu owns the hours and the key-lock owns the setting, and between them a good intention becomes something a visitor can rely on. The restraint I give them by setting it from the specification table at five in the afternoon, with the team, to the point where nobody can name it. Then fresh or woody is decided the boring way, by counting finishes. White, glass and steel take lemon and mint. Walnut, stone and dark glass take pine, sage and cedar. A tie goes to cedar, quieter. I have never needed a blotter for this decision and I do not think you will either.

The two directions that lose, I rule out before anyone opens a bottle: nothing sweet or edible, because your hob owns those smells, and nothing heavily floral, because a floor of appliances should not smell like a shop that sells scent. What is left is Mountain Breeze or Morning Freshness at the desk under about 750 sq ft, one Vaayu at ₹11,999 from about 1,500 sq ft, one Angaan past 3,000, off while the hob is lit. And the frame I put around it every time: an interiors decision like lighting or music, with no claim that fragrance moves footfall, dwell time or sales, and no claim about what it does to anything on display. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fresh citrus fragrance or a woody one better for an appliance showroom floor?
Neither in the abstract; the finishes decide. Fresh - Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus, SOSA Morning Freshness - belongs on a cool floor of white or grey lacquer, glass, brushed steel and pale stone, where it reads as a window having been open. Woody - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, SOSA Mountain Breeze - belongs on a warm or dark floor of walnut, travertine, bronze and black glass. Each is slightly wrong on the other floor, and a mixed floor defaults to woody held a step quieter.
What do showroom owners actually mean when they ask for a hotel-like fragrance?
Almost always two things that are not a scent: it was the same every time they walked in, and they could never name what it was. That is consistency and restraint, and both are worth wanting on an appliance floor. What they do not mean, though it is what they end up buying, is a lobby fragrance - a note set to register on a guest crossing marble in two minutes. The consistency comes from a timer and a key-lock on whichever direction the finishes choose; the level of a lobby is refused.
Why is a hotel-lobby level of fragrance too strong for an appliance showroom?
Because the two rooms are judged by different people over different times. A lobby is set for a guest passing through in minutes and is meant to be noticed. A showroom is judged by the advisor who breathes it nine hours a day and the architect who compares finishes at the specification table for ninety minutes, on a floor of steel, glass and stone that bounces fragrance with almost no fabric to absorb it. A lobby setting on that floor is loud by the second display and wearing by the fourth hour.
Which fragrance directions are ruled out for an appliance showroom before the fresh-or-woody decision?
Two. Anything sweet, gourmand or edible - vanilla, coffee, caramel, bakery, warm spice, tonka - because in a kitchen-appliance showroom the hob, oven and coffee counter own food smells and an edible fragrance merges with the demonstration into a third smell. And anything heavily floral - rose, jasmine, tuberose - because on a floor of appliances it reads as a candle shop or a domestic air freshener. In the SOSA range Fresh Brew, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm are good products for other rooms.
Does choosing the right direction - fresh or woody - do anything for a showroom commercially?
SOSA makes no such claim. Choosing between fresh and woody is an interiors and hospitality decision, like choosing the temperature of the lighting or the level of the music, made because a floor designed as a home should smell like one and because the wrong pairing is something a visitor notices without being able to say why. It does not change footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales in any way SOSA will assert, and SOSA makes no claim about what either direction does to any appliance or finish on display.

The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or appliance brand named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
