Fresh wins when? Daytime, modern and minimal rooms, and mixed guest lists — the Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity.
The tiebreaker? Fresh reads as a condition of the room. Woody reads as a decision you made. Choose which you want a stranger to receive.
2. Choose woody if the kitchen has no door. An open plan removes your ability to isolate cooking, so the fragrance has to hold its own position in shared air. Dry woods do; light fresh notes are simply overwritten.
3. Choose fresh if the party is in daylight. The Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity — white tea, aloe, cedar. Daytime entertaining is shorter, lighter, usually smaller, and often happens with a door open. Fresh reads correctly in that setting and woody reads slightly heavy for the hour.
4. Choose fresh for a modern room and a mixed guest list. Glass, stone and large-format tile hold nothing, so a heavy scent pools instead of spreading. And a room of people who do not know each other is not the place to express a taste — fresh expresses none.
5. The tiebreaker, if you are still stuck. Fresh reads as a condition of the room; woody reads as a decision somebody made. Ask which of those you want a stranger to receive in your hallway, and buy that one. Both are ₹299 in 15ml, so the honest move is to buy both and run one dinner on each.

How each family fails when the room fills up
A fresh accord is built from the lightest materials a perfumer has. That is not a flaw, it is the definition — coolness and transparency come from small, volatile molecules that move quickly and leave quickly. In an empty room that produces something beautiful: air that has just been changed. Put fourteen people in the same room and the arithmetic turns against it. Bodies raise the temperature, fabric absorbs, the door opens every few minutes, and at least four of your guests are wearing a fine fragrance which is, by construction, several times more concentrated than anything coming out of a diffuser. Fresh does not smell wrong in a crowd. It stops being there at all, and the host — already nose-blind to their own home within minutes — has no way of noticing, so the usual response is to add drops on the next occasion and get the same result.
Woody fails the other way. Cedarwood and vetiver are heavier, slower and much more tenacious; they settle into soft furnishings and re-release for hours, which is precisely why they hold a position in a busy room. The risk is over-presence. A woody dose that is right for an empty Tuesday evening can, in a warm room with twelve people in it, cross from atmosphere into statement — and a fragrance that has become a statement is one your guests are now evaluating rather than enjoying. There is a social dimension to this that people underrate. Fresh reads as a property of the room; woody reads as a choice the host made. Neither is better. But if the room is full of strangers, colleagues or your in-laws' friends, a fragrance that expresses no opinion is worth more than a fragrance that expresses a good one.
Where fresh wins, where woody wins, and the tiebreaker
White Tea SerenityFrom ₹299Westin-inspired · white tea · aloe · cedar. Three conditions put fresh ahead. Daytime, because lunch parties are shorter and lighter and a heavy wood at one in the afternoon reads as the wrong hour. Modern rooms, because glass, stone and unskirted furniture hold nothing — a heavy scent has nothing to settle into and pools near the machine, while a light one distributes. And mixed groups, because fresh is the family that expresses no taste. Nobody has ever objected to a room smelling like clean air.Fresh vs woody, side by side
The comparison that matters is not which smells nicer on a blotter but how each behaves once the room is full. Read across projection, food tolerance and how each reads to somebody who has just walked in.

1 Hotels-inspired ★ Forest Suite |
Cedarwood · vetiver · green leaves | Strong projection, high food tolerance — holds position in shared air | Reads as a decision the host made. The verdict for evening hosting and open kitchens |
|
Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity |
White tea · aloe · cedar | Low projection, low food tolerance — outnumbered by a crowd | Reads as a condition of the room. Right for daytime, minimal spaces and mixed groups |
|
The Ritz-Carlton-inspired Quiet Luxury |
White tea · bergamot · cedar | Moderate projection, moderate food tolerance — the even one | Reads as groomed. The fresh option if White Tea Serenity is too quiet for your room |

The St. Regis-inspired Old-World Glamour |
Amber · violet · woods | Strong projection, moderate food tolerance — plush rather than dry | Reads as formal. The woody option for carpeted winter rooms, at four drops not six |
| Not in this family, for reference: Shangri-La-inspired Tea Garden is a green-floral rather than either; Four Seasons-inspired Warm Welcome is a warm citrus-floral; W Hotels-inspired Lobby Bar is a citrus-pepper-amber for evenings with a bar in them. How much of each, and when
The two families need different numbers, and this is where most people go wrong by applying one habit to both. For the woody, five to six drops per tank on a Sukoon, six to eight on a Megh in an open-plan room. For the fresh, the same five to six — not more. The instinct to over-drop a fresh scent is the single commonest error in home fragrance, because it reads as insufficient while you are standing next to the machine and there is no obvious cost to adding another drop. There is a cost: past about seven drops a white tea stops reading as air and starts reading as product, which is the one thing it was chosen to avoid.
Timing differs too. Run the woody for thirty to forty-five minutes before guests arrive and switch it off as they come in — it will hold for hours on its own and does not need topping up. Run the fresh for the same window, but accept that it will thin out over the evening and plan a second twenty-minute run when the room empties out slightly, rather than leaving the machine going throughout. In both cases the peak lands about ten minutes after the mist stops, once the top notes have burnt off, which is why switching off at the doorbell gives guests the better version rather than a lesser one.
Do not run both at once, in the same room or in adjoining rooms with an open doorway. Two well-made blends meeting in the middle of a hall produce a third that neither perfumer intended, and the seam between them is exactly the kind of change-as-you-walk effect that reads as amateur. If you want both, run them on different occasions. Rinse the tank when you switch — a trace of cedar-vetiver will muddy a white tea for two fills — use filtered water in hard-water cities, and never substitute raw essential oils in an ultrasonic; they are too viscous to atomise and will foul the plate.
Which diffuser to run it in
This comparison changes shape depending on the machine, and that is not a sales line. An undersized diffuser makes the fresh option lose automatically, because the only variable left to you is drops — and drops are exactly what a fresh scent cannot take.

Versailles
I am asked to settle this every week, and for years I gave the diplomatic answer. I have stopped, because the diplomatic answer is not true. The two families behave differently enough in a crowded room that a real recommendation is possible — it just needs two facts about your home first.
What decided it for me was watching my own dinners. White Tea Serenity is the blend I am proudest of on a technical level; the aloe does something cool and difficult that I have not managed anywhere else. And it is the one that vanishes by nine o'clock when there are twelve people in my flat in Pune. Forest Suite is less refined and considerably more useful under those conditions, which is a lesson perfumers learn slowly and hosts learn immediately.
Buy both 15ml bottles at ₹299 each rather than believing me. Run the fresh at one lunch and the woody at one dinner and you will have a better answer for your particular flat than I can give you from mine. A portion of what you spend funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
