Founder Diaries · Diwali 2026 · 10–25 Gifts
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 10 min read Updated August 2026
Most people who write to us about ten gifts do not have a per-head figure. They have a total — a number in their head for the whole list, arrived at by feel rather than by arithmetic — and they start shopping before they have divided it. That single missing step is the reason so many lists of ten end up as seven of one thing and three of another. Divide first. The per-head figure decides everything else in about a minute, and once you have it, ten gifts is a genuinely easy problem.
Quick answers — read this first
Divide your total by ten before you look at anything. A budget of ₹4,000 is ₹400 a head and buys ten jar candles at ₹379, total ₹3,790. A budget of ₹5,000 is ₹500 a head and buys ten Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh candles at ₹449, total ₹4,490.

Then buy all ten the same. On a budget the temptation is to make two of them nicer with whatever is left over. That is the one move that turns a gift into a ranking, and it costs you more goodwill than the money buys.

The honest gap: there is no SOSA reed diffuser below ₹749 and no machine below ₹899. If your total is under about ₹7,500, the reed is not available to you at ten heads, and I would rather say so than point you at something that is not one.

Before a larger order: for anything above roughly twenty-five units, write to us through the contact page before you order. Availability by scent varies, and it is better to ask than to assume.
The short answer
Short answer: for ten people on a budget, ten message-free jar candles at ₹379 — Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks — comes to ₹3,790 and is the lowest total in this range that still produces a gift somebody keeps. One scent for the whole list, not four.
The ladder, in totals rather than unit prices: ₹3,790 for ten jar candles at ₹379 · ₹4,490 for ten Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh candles at ₹449 · ₹4,740 for ten wax melts at ₹474 · ₹6,640 for ten two-packs at ₹664 · ₹7,490 for ten Morning Freshness reeds at ₹749. Pick the row your total reaches and stop there.
What does not exist: no bulk rate, no discount band, no minimum order, no gift set, no gift box, no gift wrap and no gift card. Every figure on this page is an ordinary shelf price multiplied by ten. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact we state; a single ₹379 candle does not clear it, and an order of ten clears it many times over.
Straight answer
I have a budget and ten names. How do I turn that into an order without getting it wrong?
1. Divide the total by ten and write the number down. This sounds too obvious to say and it is the step almost everybody skips. A total feels like a constraint; a per-head figure is an instruction. ₹4,000 means ₹400 and you are looking at the ₹379 shelf. ₹5,000 means ₹500 and you are looking at ₹449. ₹7,500 means ₹750 and the whole category changes.

2. Round down to the nearest real product, not up to the nearest ambition. Ten at ₹379 is ₹3,790 and ten at ₹449 is ₹4,490. Both land under a ₹5,000 total with room to spare, and the room is the point: lists grow. Two names you had forgotten will appear, and the buyer who spent to the last rupee is the one who then has to improvise.

3. Buy all ten the same. One product, one scent, ten units. The recipients cannot see your spreadsheet; they can only see each other's gifts, and identical is the only arrangement that says nothing at all about how you rank them.

4. Do not spend the leftover on two people. If the division leaves ₹510 in hand, the instinct is to upgrade a couple of gifts. Put it back, or spend it on an eleventh and twelfth unit for the names you have not thought of yet. That is the single most useful thing a leftover can do on a list of ten.

5. If the list grows past twenty-five, ask before you order. There is no bulk programme and no rate to quote, but availability by scent varies and a large single-scent order is harder to fill than a mixed one, because each scent is stocked separately. Write through the contact page first.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, made in Pune. Free shipping above ₹499. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: divide the total by ten, round down to a real product, buy ten identical units, and keep the change for the two names you forgot. ₹3,790 buys ten jar candles at ₹379; ₹4,490 buys ten ₹449 candles; ₹7,490 buys ten reeds at ₹749, which is where the category changes.
SOSA Misty Mornings scented jar candle
The lowest honest total
Ten jar candles at ₹379 ₹3,790
Four message-free scents, hand-poured soy, 80g, roughly fifteen to eighteen hours of burn each. Nothing printed on the glass, which is exactly why they work for a list where the relationships vary. Buy ten of Misty Mornings, or ten of Bookshop, rather than two or three of each — the mixture reads as randomness to everybody except the person who placed the order.

Divide first — the three rules that make ten names easy

Ten is a particular quantity and it deserves its own advice. It is small enough that you will almost certainly hand most of them over yourself, and large enough that the recipients will see each other's. That combination is what makes a list of ten quietly demanding: the gift has to survive being carried and it has to survive being compared. The three cards below are how you satisfy both without spending more.

1
RULE ONE · THE DIVISION
The per-head figure is the only number that decides anything
SOSA Bookshop scented jar candleBookshop₹379A total is a feeling. A per-head figure is a shelf. The moment you divide, the entire store collapses into one or two rows and the decision becomes a choice between two products rather than a browse through forty. ₹400 a head is the ₹379 jar candles. ₹500 a head is the ₹449 Sandalwood and ₹449 Smoked Oudh, with wax melts and mugs at ₹474 alongside. ₹670 a head is the two-pack at ₹664. ₹750 a head is the reed line, and that is a different kind of gift altogether. Round down to the row you can actually reach, because the alternative is arriving at the tenth name with nothing left.
The test: can you say your per-head figure out loud without hesitating? If not, you have not divided yet.
2
RULE TWO · THE CARRY
At ten, you are the delivery mechanism
SOSA Cozy Corner scented jar candleCozy Corner₹379Ten is the last quantity where most people still hand the gifts over in person — at a desk, at a door, across a car park during the busiest week of the year. That makes physical shape a real criterion rather than an afterthought. It has to be carriable in a bag alongside nine others, it has to be legible as a gift in about one second without any explanation, and it must not create a task for the person receiving it. A jar candle and a small scented candle both pass all three. Anything that needs assembling, refrigerating, plugging in or reading does not. This is also why nothing on this page is a machine refill: the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a refill for an ultrasonic diffuser and does nothing without hardware the recipient almost certainly does not own, which makes it a poor standalone gift at any quantity.
The test: could you hand it over with one hand while saying one sentence? That is the whole brief at ten.
3
RULE THREE · COMPLETENESS
Looking generous is about completeness, not price
SOSA Evening Walks scented jar candleEvening Walks₹379The cheapest gifts that look expensive share one property: nothing else needs buying. They arrive finished. A candle with its own vessel is complete; a reed diffuser with its six fibre reeds already in the box is complete; a thing that requires the recipient to go and find a holder, a battery or a refill is not, and it announces its price the moment they realise. The second lever is a named material. "Sandalwood" and "oudh" are materials with a reputation attached; a mood name is not. That is why, of everything under ₹500, those two candles at ₹449 read as the most deliberate purchases — not because they cost ₹70 more, but because they say what they are.
The test: after they open it, is there anything at all they still have to do before using it?

The leftover-money trap, and what to do with the change

Here is the failure I see most often on a budgeted list, and it is committed entirely out of kindness. The buyer divides, buys ten at ₹379, finds ₹210 sitting unused against a ₹4,000 total, and spends it making two of the gifts slightly better — usually for the two people they know best, which is the worst possible selection criterion because it is precisely the one everybody else can infer. A budget surplus should never be converted into a difference between recipients. If you want to spend it, spend it on quantity: an eleventh and a twelfth unit, held back for the names that always appear late.

The exception, and it is a real one, is a genuine tier. If your ten includes three people whose relationship to you is categorically different — a household you are visiting rather than colleagues, say — then two tiers are legible and nobody has to interpret them. But the tiers must be far enough apart to read as categories rather than as grades. Seven at ₹379 and three at ₹799 is two categories. Seven at ₹379 and three at ₹449 is a grade, and it will be read as one. If in doubt, one tier. It is the only arrangement that requires no explanation at all.

And one honest word about the gift you may be replacing. A box of sweets is not a failure of imagination; it is a form of greeting, and for a first visit to somebody's elders, or a household where mithai is the expected shape of the gesture, it is the correct thing and a candle is a substitution nobody asked for. The argument for home fragrance gets strong in the other case: a list of ten households that will each receive several near-identical food boxes in the same week, where the fourth one is not really a gift any more. Duplication, not quality, is what the candle is answering.

Three totals, three answers, all ten of them identical
The SOSA principle
A surplus should become more units, never better units.
Because the extra unit solves a problem you are definitely going to have, and the better unit creates one you did not have before.

Where a budget stops and the reed line starts

The number to know is ₹749. That is the cheapest SOSA reed diffuser — Morning Freshness in 50ml — and there is nothing in the reed line below it at any size. The cheapest machine is the Boond at ₹899. For ten people that means a total of ₹7,490 before the reed becomes an option at all. If your budget is ₹4,000 or ₹5,000, the reed is simply not part of this decision, and every honest version of this page has to say so rather than steering you towards something adjacent and hoping you do not notice the difference.

What the extra money buys is duration, and it is a large difference rather than a marginal one. A ₹379 jar candle is roughly fifteen to eighteen hours; the ₹664 two-pack is roughly thirty to thirty-six. A 50ml reed runs six to eight weeks continuously, needs no lighting, no supervision and no follow-up, and is still working in December. Below ₹749 a head you are buying an occasion; at ₹749 you are buying a season. Both are real gifts. They are just not the same gift, and a budget page that blurs them is not much use to anybody.

On a list of ten, the money you have left is worth more as an eleventh gift than as a nicer one. The eleventh person always turns up.

What to buy for ten on a budget, in order

In the order I would place it, with the ten-unit total beside each. The last row is the honest gap, given a row of its own because on a budget page the thing you cannot afford is as important as the thing you can.

Honest notes for budget buyers: there is no published bulk rate, discount band, GST arrangement, custom branding, minimum order or lead-time scheme at SOSA, and no figure here is a special price. There is no gift set, gift box, gift wrap, gift note or gift card. The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a refill for an ultrasonic machine, not a standalone gift. Reed diffusers are alcohol-free, on a heat-stable CCT base, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, composed in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer. SOSA Morning Freshness Malabar lemon and mint reed diffuser
The row above the budget
Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749
The cheapest way into the reed line and the lowest-polarisation option when you are buying at volume: cold-pressed Malabar lemon over peppermint on a eucalyptus base, 9.0 on our strength scale, six to eight weeks from one bottle. Ten of them is ₹7,490. I am not going to pretend that is a budget answer — it is roughly double the ₹379 row — but it is the point at which the gift stops being an evening and starts being a season, and it is worth knowing where that line sits before you decide.

A note from Sonal

I have watched a great many people shop for ten gifts, and the ones who find it stressful are almost always the ones who have not divided. They are carrying a total in their head, and every product they look at is measured against a number that has nothing to do with it. Twenty minutes of that and the list starts fragmenting — a few of these, a couple of those — which is how you end up with ten gifts that do not look like a decision.

The division is not really about money. It is about reducing the store to one row so that you only have to make one choice. Once you know you are shopping at ₹379 or at ₹449, everything else on the site is irrelevant, and the remaining decision — which scent — takes a minute rather than an afternoon.

The other thing I would say, gently, is that a budget is not something to apologise for. A ₹379 candle bought ten times, one scent, handed over the same way to everybody, is a better-looking gesture than an expensive gift given to two people and a cheaper one to eight. Nobody counts what you spent. Everybody notices whether they got what the person beside them got. Everything is made in Pune, and part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Diwali gifts for ten people on a budget?
Ten identical message-free jar candles at ₹379 — Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Misty Mornings or Evening Walks — for a total of ₹3,790. If the total reaches ₹4,500, ten Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh candles at ₹449 comes to ₹4,490 and looks more deliberate, because both lead with a named material.
How much should I budget for ten Diwali gifts?
Work from the product rather than from a round number. ₹3,790 covers ten at ₹379, ₹4,490 covers ten at ₹449, ₹6,640 covers ten two-packs at ₹664 and ₹7,490 covers ten reed diffusers at ₹749. Choose the row you can reach comfortably rather than the one you can just afford, because lists of ten reliably become lists of twelve.
Should I buy everyone the same gift or vary them by how well I know them?
Buy them the same. Varying by closeness is invisible to you and completely visible to them, because the only comparison available to a recipient is the gift standing next to theirs. If your ten genuinely contains two different categories of relationship, use two tiers that are far enough apart to read as categories — not ₹379 against ₹449, which reads as a grade.
Is there a cheaper reed diffuser if I am buying ten?
No. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the cheapest reed diffuser SOSA makes at any size, and there is no bulk rate, discount band or quantity price to change that. Ten reeds is ₹7,490. Below that figure the candles are the honest answer, and the ₹449 pair are the strongest-looking things on the sub-₹500 shelf.
What should I do with the money left over after buying ten?
Buy an eleventh and a twelfth unit of exactly the same thing and keep them aside. Lists grow during the festive week — a name is remembered, somebody visits unexpectedly — and a spare identical gift solves that instantly. What the surplus should not do is upgrade two of the ten, because that converts a budget into a visible ranking.
