Least divisive first: Garden Bloom ₹799, then Mountain Breeze ₹849, then Fresh Brew ₹849, then Morning Freshness ₹749, then Evening Calm ₹799.
Most loved is third on that list. Fresh Brew has the warmest reception of anything we make and the fullest presence at 9.5 on our internal scale — which is exactly why it is a poor gift for a small flat or a bedroom you have never seen.
Don't buy this if: you actually know their taste, in which case buy what they like and ignore this ranking; or if the household includes a newborn, an asthmatic, or somebody who has said they dislike scented things. Then good coffee, honey, linen or a voucher they redeem themselves are honest gifts and this is not.
2. Garden Bloom, ₹799, is the least divisive thing we make. Rose and night-blooming jasmine at 8.9 on our internal strength scale — presence without insistence. It reads as hospitality rather than as personality, which is precisely what you want in a home you have not been inside.
3. Mountain Breeze, ₹849, is second and covers the gap Bloom leaves. Dry Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar, with no sweetness at all. Almost nobody actively dislikes it; the people it fails are those who want a home to smell warm and find it austere. It is the correct choice the moment you suspect the recipient rejects floral or sweet fragrance.
4. Fresh Brew, ₹849, is the most loved and the third-safest. Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla read as cosy to almost everybody, and at 9.5 it has the fullest presence in the range. Both of those facts are why it needs a room you can vouch for: it is a food register, and in a studio flat or a bedroom it is too much of a good thing.
5. Morning Freshness, ₹749, is widely liked and slightly functional. Malabar lemon, peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus at 9.0 — cold, bright and anti-floral. Very few people dislike it, but some read "clean" as "cleaning", which makes it a superb kitchen, bathroom or home-office gift and a slightly thin living-room one.
6. Evening Calm, ₹799, is the loveliest and the least giftable to a stranger. Kashmir lavender and chamomile, 8.9 and deliberately the softest thing in the range. Lavender carries more personal history than any other material we work with — sleep, illness, a grandmother's cupboard — and you cannot predict which memory it will land on. Give it to someone you know, or for a nursery or a bedroom where its softness is the point.
7. And note the honest gaps. The reed range has no oud, no musk-forward scent and no aquatic. If the recipient is known to love any of those, we are not the right shop for this gift and I would rather say so.

Part one — the three things that make a fragrance divisive
Before the ranking, the reasoning behind it, because a list you cannot check is not much use. In fifteen years of composing and selling fragrance I have found that dissent is almost never about quality — nobody writes to say a composition is badly made. It is about association, register and dose, in that order. A scent picks up a memory, or it arrives in a room where its category does not belong, or there is simply too much of it for the space. Crowd-pleasing, properly understood, means avoiding all three. It is a defensive craft rather than a seductive one, and it is the right craft for a gift.
Morning Freshness₹749 · bright, coldGourmand fragrance — coffee, vanilla, caramel, spice — is the most reliably liked register there is and one of the least reliably placed. People who adore the smell of coffee can still find it wrong at eleven at night in a bedroom, and a household that cooks three times a day may not want a fourth food smell layered on top. The cold registers have the opposite profile: lemon, mint and eucalyptus are almost never disliked, but a few people read them as the smell of a well-kept bathroom rather than as a treat. Neither is a fault. Both are reasons to think about which room your gift will end up in, which you can often guess even when you cannot guess their taste.Part two — the range ranked by how few people dislike it
Read the second column before anything else. Every fragrance has dissenters; the useful information is who they are, so you can work out whether the person you are buying for is one of them.
| Rank & scent | Who actively dislikes it | Why it survives a crowd | Strength | Give it for | 50ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Garden Bloom ★ | People who reject florals outright — often, though not always, men | Reads as hotel hospitality, not as somebody's perfume | 8.9 · floral | Entryways, living rooms, any home you have not seen | ₹799 |
| 2. Mountain Breeze | People who want a home to smell warm; it can read as austere | Dry, unsweetened, reads as a material rather than a fragrance | 9.4 · deep woody | Bedrooms, home offices, libraries, anyone anti-floral | ₹849 |
| 3. Fresh Brew | Anyone who dislikes food smells outside a kitchen — or dislikes coffee | The warmest reception of anything we make, in the right room | 9.5 · warm-deep | Large living rooms, kitchens, homes that host | ₹849 |
| 4. Morning Freshness | A minority who read cold citrus and mint as "cleaning product" | Almost nobody objects; it simply reads functional rather than luxurious | 9.0 · bright | Bathrooms, kitchens, home offices, humid flats | ₹749 |
| 5. Evening Calm | Anyone whose lavender memory is medicinal — and you cannot know | Beautiful, and the softest thing we make; wonderful for a person you know | 8.9 · softest | Bedrooms, nurseries, reading corners | ₹799 |
| The honest caveat: this ranking is my working judgement from years of customer correspondence and gift returns, not a survey with a sample size. It also inverts if you happen to know the person: if your recipient is a lavender lover, Evening Calm goes straight to the top of the list and everything above becomes irrelevant. Rankings by dissent are for buying blind. The moment you have real information, use the information. | |||||

Part three — when a crowd-pleaser is exactly the wrong thing to buy
The whole method on this page is a response to ignorance, and it should be abandoned the moment ignorance ends. If you know their taste, buy their taste. A friend who has told you three times that she loves lavender should be given Evening Calm, which sits last on my divisiveness ranking and first on hers. A gift chosen by risk-avoidance when you had real information is a slightly cowardly gift, and people can tell. Low divisiveness is a tool for buying blind — for the colleague, the in-law, the new neighbour, the client, the twelve people you must thank in a festive week. Not for the person you have known for twenty years.
Don't buy this if the recipient has said they dislike scented things — the least divisive fragrance in the world is still a fragrance, and a stated preference is not a puzzle to solve. Don't buy this if there is a newborn or a pregnancy in the house, or somebody with asthma, chemical sensitivity or scent-triggered migraine; ask one person who has been inside that home recently rather than guessing. Don't buy this if the flat is a single small sealed room where a constant background has nowhere to disperse. And don't buy this if you know they have already received two or three this festive season — home fragrance is one of the most duplicated gifts in an Indian December, and the fourth bottle is not a pleasure. In those cases: single-estate coffee, a good tea, honey, a proper olive oil, plain linen napkins, or a voucher they spend to their own taste. Those are real gifts, not fallbacks.
There is also a quieter failure worth naming. A crowd-pleasing scent given to somebody with strong, developed fragrance taste can read as impersonal — correct, pleasant, and obviously chosen to be inoffensive. If your recipient is a person who wears niche perfume and talks about it, they will notice. With them, either ask a direct question, or step outside the category entirely and give something where your judgement is not on trial. Nobody has ever been insulted by an excellent olive oil.
Part four — the crowd-pleaser edit, by who you are buying for
The ranking turned into decisions. Occasions, not personalities, because occasions are the thing you actually know.
| Who it is for | Give | Why this one | Size to choose | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A colleague or a boss ★ | Garden Bloom | Warm, correct, entirely unpresumptuous — no personal claim in it | 50ml | ₹799 |
| A man who says he dislikes scented things | Mountain Breeze | Dry pine and cedar read as a material, not a perfume | 50ml or 130ml | ₹849 / ₹1,349 |
| A couple who host constantly | Fresh Brew — if the living room is large | The fullest presence we make, and the warmest welcome | 130ml | ₹1,349 |
| A housewarming for a small flat | Morning Freshness | Cold and bright; cuts through a humid new-paint smell | 50ml | ₹749 |
| Somebody you know well and know sleeps badly | Evening Calm | Only with knowledge — lavender is the most memory-loaded note here | 50ml | ₹799 |
| A wedding, or a gift that must read as considered | Warmth & Bloom or Fresh & Grounded duo | Two scents for two rooms shows you thought about their home | 2 × 50ml | ₹1,548–₹1,598 |
| Four colleagues at once | Four of the same bottle | Buying identical is not lazy here — it is the whole point of a low-risk scent | 50ml each | From ₹749 each |
Versailles
Perfumery school trains you to make things people will love. It does not really train you to make things nobody will mind, and for years I thought the second was the lesser craft. I no longer think so. A composition that can sit in a hundred different homes without any of them resenting it is a harder brief than a composition that thrills twenty of them. It requires restraint at every stage, and restraint is invisible when it works.
Garden Bloom is the clearest example in our range. It is not the most interesting thing I have made and it never wins the tasting when people smell all five side by side. It wins the year. It is the bottle that is still on the console in month two, that the mother-in-law did not comment on, that the guest asked about at the door. That is what a gift fragrance is for.
If you know the person, ignore all of this and buy what they love — that is always the better gift, and I would rather you sent me a note saying you bought the lavender because she adores lavender. Everything we make is composed and handmade in Pune, tested through 45°C summers and 85% monsoon humidity, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
