Why citrus disappears first — and why that matters at bedtime
Citrus materials are small, light molecules and they evaporate faster than almost anything else a perfumer works with. That is not a defect; it is the reason citrus smells the way it does — immediate, bright, uncomplicated. But in a diffuser it produces a very particular curve. The first fifteen minutes are the loudest a citrus will ever be, and from there it falls away steeply. In an open room with people moving through it, that is fine, because the room is being refreshed constantly and nobody is sitting still waiting for the scent to develop. How much to use, and when to run it
Three to four drops per tank, which is the middle of the general three-to-six guidance and the right place for a citrus-carrying blend. Under-dose a citrus and it genuinely does read as nothing, because there is very little material left after the first twenty minutes to carry the impression. But adding drops does not make a citrus last longer — it only makes the opening sharper. Five or six drops of Warm Welcome gives you a loud citrus for a quarter of an hour and exactly the same sandalwood afterwards. If the room feels under-scented at midnight, the answer is a bigger machine or a different scent, never a heavier hand.
Now the recommendation that matters most in this piece, and the one nobody makes: if you love citrus, run it in the morning. Twenty minutes on a Sukoon as you wake turns the family's weakness into its whole point — you want something bright, you want it immediately, and you do not need it to last, because you are about to leave the room. A bedroom scented at 7am and again lightly at 10pm with the same bottle gives you two entirely different rooms. If you only ever run a diffuser at night, you are using the least suitable half of the day for the family you say you like most.
Two maintenance notes that hit citrus harder than any other family. Citrus materials oxidise faster than anything else in a blend, so keep the bottle tightly closed, away from sunlight and out of a hot cupboard — an oxidised citrus goes dull and slightly waxy, and you will blame the diffuser. Citrus is the family I am asked for most often and recommend for bedrooms least often, and I have stopped softening that. A lemon or a grapefruit at the top of a formula is doing something wonderful for about fifteen minutes. Asking it to hold a closed room until two in the morning is asking a material to be something it is chemically incapable of being.
Warm Welcome was composed for a hotel entrance in my head — the first thing you meet, bright and welcoming, then softening as you walk further in.
