This is the question that saves diffusers, so I will answer it plainly as the person who formulates the fragrance. The word fragrance oil hides a big difference. A water-based diffuser fragrance like ours is made to run safely in an ultrasonic unit. Raw fragrance oils, essential oils and alcohol perfumes are not - they are too thick or too solvent-heavy, and they can clog and damage the misting plate. Let me explain why.
Quick answers — read this first
Are fragrance oils safe in an ultrasonic diffuser? Only the water-based kind. SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection is made to run safely in the unit. Raw or oil-based fragrance oils, essential oils and alcohol perfumes are too thick or solvent-heavy and can clog and damage the ultrasonic plate.
Why can raw oils damage the plate? The plate atomises water. Thick oils float and coat the disc rather than misting, which dulls output and can shorten the unit's life. Alcohol perfumes are solvent-heavy and not made for a water tank.
So what should I use? SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance - a few drops in clean water. It disperses and mists cleanly, exactly as the plate is designed for.
The short answer
Safe: SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance - made to run safely in the ultrasonic unit.
Not safe: raw or oil-based fragrance oils, essential oils and alcohol perfumes - too thick or solvent-heavy, can clog and damage the plate.
Why: the plate atomises water. Thick oils coat the disc; alcohol perfumes are solvent-heavy. Neither is built for a water tank.
Use instead: a few drops of the SOSA Hotel Collection in clean, room-temperature water. Cool mist, no heat.
Illustrative only. Ultrasonic diffusers atomise water; a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance ride the mist. Thick raw oils sit on the plate and clog it.
The honest answer is: only if they are water-based. SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance is formulated specifically to run safely through an ultrasonic diffuser - a few drops disperse in the water and ride the mist cleanly. But the phrase fragrance oil often means something quite different: raw or oil-based fragrance oils and essential oils are thick and viscous, and alcohol perfumes are solvent-heavy. An ultrasonic plate works by atomising water, and these thicker, oilier or solvent-heavy liquids do not atomise the same way. They float on the water and coat the disc, which dulls the mist over time and can shorten or damage the unit. So my clear guidance is simple: use a water-based diffuser fragrance, which is exactly what the Hotel Collection is, and keep raw fragrance oils, essential oils and neat perfume out of the tank.
Short version: water-based diffuser fragrance is safe - raw fragrance oils, essential oils and alcohol perfumes are too thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the plate. Use the water-based SOSA fragrance.
Want the fragrance that is actually made for the unit?
To answer this properly I need to explain what the ultrasonic plate is doing, because once you see it, the rule follows on its own.
What the plate does
A small ceramic disc vibrates at ultrasonic frequency and shakes the water surface into a fine, cool mist. It is engineered to atomise water. A water-based fragrance disperses through that water and mists along with it - clean and even.
What thick oils do instead
Raw or oil-based fragrance oils and essential oils are viscous and do not mix into water. They float on the surface and coat the vibrating disc. Instead of misting, they build up on the plate, which weakens the output and, over time, can damage the unit.
What alcohol perfumes do
Neat perfume is dissolved in alcohol - a solvent the plate and tank are not designed to sit in. It is solvent-heavy and not made for a water diffuser, so it is another thing to keep out of the tank.
The myth: "Any fragrance oil is safe in an ultrasonic diffuser." The reality: only water-based diffuser fragrance is. Raw and oil-based fragrance oils, essential oils and alcohol perfumes are too thick or solvent-heavy and can clog and damage the ultrasonic plate. Use SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection only.
The safe choice, and how to use it
The safe choice is a fragrance built for the machine. I formulated the Hotel Collection to be exactly that, so you get depth of scent and clean misting together.
Use SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection. It is made to disperse in water and atomise cleanly through the plate. That is its whole design intent.
A few drops per fill. It is concentrated, so a few drops in the tank scents a whole room. Start light and build up to taste.
Clean, room-temperature water. Filtered or RO in hard-water cities. Never hot water - these are cool-mist units with no heating element.
Rinse when you switch scents. A quick empty-and-wipe keeps each fragrance true and the mist clean.
What you add
Safe in an ultrasonic tank?
SOSA water-based Hotel Collection
Yes - made for it
Oil-based fragrance oil
No - too thick, coats the plate
Raw essential oil
No - viscous, builds up on the disc
Alcohol perfume
No - solvent-heavy, not designed for it
As the person who composed it, I built the Hotel Collection water-based on purpose - so you never have to choose between a real, layered fragrance and the health of your machine. You get both.
The word that matters is water-based. That is the fragrance an ultrasonic diffuser is safe with - raw oils and perfumes belong on skin or in wax, not on the plate.
The SOSA range
SOSA makes three cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers for different rooms, each arriving with three of our water-based Hotel Collection fragrances so you can scent from day one. Prices and headline specs below are live from the SOSA store. Whichever you choose, use only the SOSA water-based fragrance - raw essential or carrier oils can clog the misting plate.
SOSA range
3 ultrasonic diffusers + the water-based Hotel Collection refill
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.
They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.
One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.
Frequently asked questions
Are fragrance oils safe in an ultrasonic diffuser?
Only water-based ones. SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection is made to run safely in the unit. Raw or oil-based fragrance oils, essential oils and alcohol perfumes are too thick or solvent-heavy and can clog and damage the plate.
Can I use essential oils instead?
I would not. Raw essential oils are viscous and coat the vibrating disc rather than misting, which dulls output and can shorten the unit's life. Use the water-based Hotel Collection, which mists cleanly.
Why can't I just use my perfume?
Neat perfume is alcohol-based - solvent-heavy and not designed for a water tank. It is not what an ultrasonic diffuser is built to run. Use a water-based diffuser fragrance instead.
How is SOSA's Hotel Collection different?
It is a water-based fragrance formulated for ultrasonic diffusers. It gives you the depth people want from fragrance oils without the thickness that clogs the plate.
How much should I add?
A few drops in a tank of clean, room-temperature water. It is concentrated, so start light and add more to taste. Use filtered or RO water in hard-water cities and never hot water.
