What amber actually is
There is a common confusion worth clearing up first. The honey-coloured fossil resin you see set into jewellery has almost nothing to do with the amber a perfumer means. Fossil amber barely smells of anything. What we call amber in fragrance is an accord — a small architecture of materials that, blended, produce a particular golden warmth.
Traditionally that architecture leans on labdanum (a dark, sticky resin from the rock rose, ambery and faintly leathery), benzoin (a balsamic resin, sweet and vanillic), and a whisper of vanilla and tonka to round it. The result is not sharp or floral or green. It is enveloping — the way a cashmere throw is enveloping. That is why amber has always been the note of choice for rooms meant to feel elegant and calm rather than fresh and awake.
For a home, this matters practically. Amber does not announce itself the way a citrus or a white flower does. It settles low and slow, and it makes a space feel considered.
