Most fragrance advice treats coverage as an ambition - the more of the house, the better the product. Your question inverts that, and it is the more sophisticated position. A bedroom is the one space in a home where the occupant already has a fragrance policy, whether it is a candle they like, a pillow spray, or nothing at all. The shared floor of a duplex has no such owner, which is precisely why it is the part worth scenting. So the interesting work here is not persuading a machine to reach further. It is deciding where the scent should deliberately stop, and then checking whether the stairwell makes your two floors one volume or two.
The instrument for a shared floor rather than for a property. SOSA Vaayu, ₹11,999 - waterless cold-air diffusion producing a dry residue-free mist, published for up to 1000 m3, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, a 400ml tank, app and button control with 1, 4, 8 or 24-hour windows and chosen days, adjustable intensity, under 38 dB, four 100 ml fragrances in the box.
Quick answers — read this first
What does targeted scenting mean in a duplex? Choosing the volume rather than the property. SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is published for up to 1000 m3, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of one connected body of air, so placing it in the shared living, dining and stairwell space scents exactly that and stops at every closed bedroom door. That is the intended result here rather than a compromise.
Will one machine cover both floors of a duplex? Only if the stairwell is genuinely open at both ends. An open stair with no door at the top makes the two levels one connected volume; a stair that ends in a landing door makes them two, and the upper level then needs its own answer. The published rating describes connected air, so the staircase is the single detail that decides this.
Why leave the bedrooms out at all? Because they are the rooms with an existing owner and an existing preference, and because a passive bottle is the better instrument there anyway. A reed diffuser from ₹749 in 50 ml gives a bedroom its own scent at its own strength, about 6 to 10 weeks, with nothing to plug in - and anybody who wants their room unscented simply does not get one.
The short answer
Short answer: Scent the volume, not the property. A SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 placed in the shared living, dining and stair space covers up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air and stops at every closed door, which is exactly what targeted scenting means. Bedrooms that want something take a reed diffuser from Rs 749 of their own.
Why: Closed doors are where a coverage rating stops anyway, so the machine delivers the shared floor precisely and leaves every bedroom to its own occupant, at under 38 dB and on a schedule.
A gift cannot change how somebody's week went, and a page that suggests otherwise is not worth reading. What a small parcel does is tell a person you were thinking about them on a day when nothing made you - which is a real thing to say, and worth saying. Keep it small, because a large one asks somebody already short of energy to produce a reaction, and send the words separately, because the object cannot carry them.
I have a 4BHK duplex and I want the common areas scented but not every bedroom. Is that a sensible way to buy, and what does it cost?
It is not only sensible, it is how the published specification actually behaves. A coverage rating assumes one connected body of air, so a machine on the shared floor reaches the living, dining, passage and open stair and stops at each closed bedroom door without anybody arranging it. SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is the instrument: waterless cold-air diffusion, a dry residue-free mist with no water and no heat, published for up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours with day scheduling and adjustable intensity, under 38 dB, DC 12V / 1A at 5W, 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, CE, RoHS and SGS marked, made in India, and supplied with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each. The one detail to check in a duplex is the staircase: open at both ends, the two levels are one volume; closed by a landing door, they are two, and the published figure applies to the connected one only. There is no published figure for what a second machine would add, so anything beyond that goes to WhatsApp. And fragrance adds a scent to a space - it does not remove, neutralise or purify one, and the residue-free mist is about residue on surfaces rather than about air quality. A portion of every SOSA order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Leaving the bedrooms out is not the budget version of this. It is the specification, and the machine enforces it for you by stopping at closed doors.
What this comes to: Vaayu at ₹11,999 for the shared floor - up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of joined air, under 38 dB, scheduled by app, four 100 ml fragrances in the box - and nothing at all in the bedrooms unless somebody asks for it.
Deciding what gets scented, and then reading the stairwell honestly
Three things decide a targeted install, and only one of them is about the product. Start with the decision you have already made, because it is the right one and it deserves stating properly.
1
First
Why stopping at the bedroom doors is the correct specification
Shared space in a home has no single owner. Four people cross the living floor and none of them chose what it should smell like, which is the gap a scent fills without contradicting anybody. A bedroom is the opposite case. Somebody sleeps in it, keeps their own things in it, and very often already has a view about fragrance in it - including the view that there should be none.
So a plan that scents the shared floor and leaves the bedrooms alone is not a reduced plan. It is the plan that respects where preference already exists. It also happens to be what the hardware does on its own: a coverage rating describes connected air, and a closed door is where connected air ends.
The bedrooms that do want something are a separate, small purchase made later and per person - a reed diffuser from ₹749 in 50 ml, or from ₹1,249 in 130 ml for a large one, about 6 to 10 weeks, nothing to plug in, nothing to switch off, and easy to simply not buy for the room that does not want it.
Tip: Shared space has no owner and no stated preference. That is exactly why it is the part to scent.
2
Second
The staircase is the detail that decides the duplex
A duplex looks like two floors and behaves like either one volume or two, depending on a single opening. Walk up the stairs. If the flight rises into an open landing with no door at the top, the lower and upper shared areas are one connected body of air and the published rating applies across them. If the stair arrives at a door that is usually shut, you have two volumes and the machine serves whichever one it stands in.
This is worth doing physically rather than from the plan, because duplex plans are drawn before anybody decides which doors get used. It is also the moment to be honest about scale: the published figure is up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of joined air, and if the connected shared space is clearly beyond that, SOSA publishes nothing about what a second machine contributes. That is a message to WhatsApp on +91 96192 18531, not a sum to do yourself.
If the two levels turn out to be separate volumes and only one of them is used for company, the answer is often still one machine - placed downstairs, scheduled for the hours the shared floor is in use - with bottles doing the quiet work upstairs.
3
Third
Scheduling is what makes a targeted install behave
A shared floor is used in bands. Mornings, evenings, and whole Saturdays when people are home; empty stretches in between. The control set published for Vaayu maps onto that directly: Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, with auto-stop and a key-lock. Targeting is not only about where the scent goes; it is also about when, and that half is set once and left.
It is quiet enough to sit in the middle of the room it is scenting - operation is published under 38 dB - and it is small: 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm, 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted. Wall and HVAC mounting is published as an option; nothing about fixings is published, and there is no installation service either.
On what it consumes: it is supplied with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, so the shared floor can be running the evening it is unpacked, and SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm and ₹1,849 for 300 gm afterwards. The page states the life of a 400ml fill two different ways - about 75 days in its specification data and 90 or more in its body copy - and intensity and scheduled hours move it either way, so ask on WhatsApp rather than budgeting against a single figure. There is no published warranty period and no published running-cost figure.
Tip: Set the days and the window once. A targeted install is a where decision and a when decision.
Read the number strictly, not generously
About 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - of air that is actually connected
Vaayu publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing in home fragrance does: up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. The caveat matters more than the number. A rating assumes one connected body of air. A ground floor that runs living into dining into a stairwell is one volume and is exactly what the figure describes. A bungalow of the same total area with six closed doors is not one volume, it is six rooms, and the figure does not transfer. Work out how much of the house is genuinely open before you work out anything else - and note that no guidance is published on what a second unit adds.
Write down which spaces are shared. That list is what you are scenting.
Walk the stairs and check whether a door at the top closes off the upper floor.
Put the machine in the shared volume and schedule it to the hours people use it.
Buy a Rs 749 bottle only for a bedroom whose occupant actually wants one.
The SOSA principle
The most useful thing about a coverage rating is where it stops. A closed bedroom door is not a failure of the specification; it is the boundary that lets you scent the part of a home nobody has claimed and leave the parts that somebody has.
Read that way, a duplex is not a large property to be covered. It is one shared volume with a specific edge, plus four rooms that each make their own small decision.
Which set to send when only the shared floor is being scented
There are three published four-scent sets, all ₹11,999, so the decision is register rather than spend. The pairings are Ritz-Carlton, Westin, St. Regis and 1 Hotels inspirations; Westin, Shangri-La, Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton; and St. Regis, W Hotels, 1 Hotels and Four Seasons. To be clear about what those names mean on a SOSA box: they are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations, composed by SOSA, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. When only the shared floor is being scented, a set with a little more presence is defensible - the scent is not following anybody to bed, and it has a specific job in the part of the home where people arrive and gather. Four 100 ml bottles is enough to work through that judgement properly, and the waterless nebuliser oils at ₹1,049 for 100 gm are there if the shared floor wants something different later.
The SOSA gift edit
Four ways to scent a duplex, and what each one actually does
The option
Who it suits, and where it fails
Vaayu on the shared floor · ₹11,999
Covers up to about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected air, under 38 dB, 1, 4, 8 or 24-hour scheduled windows, complete in the box with four 100 ml fragrances. It stops at every closed door, which is the point here - and it stops at a landing door too, so a shut-off upper floor is not included.
Machine plus two bottles · ₹11,999 plus ₹749 each
The precise version of targeted: the shared volume from the machine, and a 50 ml bottle only in the bedrooms that asked for one. About 6 to 10 weeks per bottle. It asks you to have the conversation with four occupants first, which takes longer than buying and is worth it.
Bottles only, shared floor included · ₹1,249 to ₹1,349 each
A 130 ml reed in the living area, the dining and the landing. Passive, nothing to operate, no schedule to set. It falls short in a large joined volume, where a bottle scents its own surroundings rather than the floor, which is the exact case the machine exists for.
A commercial machine · ₹38,500
SOSA Meenar, published for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft. It is built for a hotel lobby or a showroom floor, and in a home it is not the more serious choice, it is the wrong scale of instrument. Included here because a duplex often tempts people to ask about it.
The two details that matter in a finished house
Under 38 dB, and it runs only when you tell it to
Two published details decide whether this belongs in a house somebody spent years on. It runs under 38 dB, which is the answer to the reasonable worry about a machine humming in a double-height living room. And it is scheduled: Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, with auto-stop and a key-lock. That is what makes it workable in a house occupied for part of the year, or a room used only when people come over. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, and it ships with four 100 ml fragrances - so it is complete on the day it arrives.
Below the machines, the range answers different questions rather than smaller versions of this one. The ultrasonics - Boond at ₹899, Sukoon at ₹1,899 and Megh at ₹5,999 - are water-based and made for a single space, and they need water topped up regularly, which is a recurring job somebody in the house has to accept. SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is cordless and portable; it goes with a person to a car or a hotel room and does not scent a property, and its country of origin is published as China. Attars from ₹379 are worn rather than placed, and candles from ₹399 need a flame and somebody present to light them. For a shared floor that should be scented on a schedule and nowhere else, none of those is the instrument.
₹11,999. Up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume. A 400ml tank, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h run windows and adjustable intensity. Under 38 dB.
165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, in black or white, freestanding on a surface or wall and HVAC mounted. DC 12V / 1A at 5W, with auto-stop and a key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS marks.
Every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets. So it is complete on arrival, which matters more for a gift than it sounds.
four x 100 ml included
The number this whole decision turns on, and where it stops being true
Up to 1000 m3 - about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - of connected air
SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing else in home fragrance does: up to 1000 m3, stated on the product page as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft. It is a waterless cold-air machine producing a dry, residue-free mist with no water and no heat, running under 38 dB on DC 12V / 1A at 5W, with a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app and onboard button control, run windows of 1h, 4h, 8h or 24h, day scheduling and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm and 0.9 kg, in black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted, CE, RoHS and SGS marked, and its country of origin is India. But a coverage rating assumes one connected body of air. That figure describes an open-plan living-dining floor, a duplex's main level, a double-height hall - the kind of volume a small passive bottle cannot reach. It does not describe a bungalow with every internal door closed, because that is not one volume; it is six. Above about 3,000 sq ft of genuinely connected space, or across separated wings, the honest answer is a conversation rather than a number, because no multi-unit guidance is published. SOSA Meenar at ₹38,500 is published for 12,000 to 18,000 sq ft and is a commercial machine rather than a house gift.
Tell SOSA who it is for, roughly how big the room is, whether their home is already scented and what you want to spend - and you will be told which size and which scent, including the times the honest answer is the 50ml rather than the 130ml.
Coverage is usually sold as how far a scent travels. In a duplex the more useful half of the specification is where it stops, and a closed bedroom door does that work for free.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA
The SOSA gifting range
Two questions settle almost every reed diffuser gift, and the first one is not price. How big is the room it is going into? A 50ml suits a bedroom, a study, a hallway or a first diffuser; a 130ml suits an open-plan living and dining area, and it is genuinely too much for a small closed bedroom. Then: how much do you actually know about their taste? The less you know, the less declarative the scent should be - Morning Freshness is the safest of the five for a home you have never stood in, and Fresh Brew coffee-vanilla is the strongest opinion in the range. Price follows those two answers rather than leading them.
The SOSA range, sorted by how much air it is meant to handle
Up to 1000 m3, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft of connected volume - a 400ml tank, Bluetooth app and onboard buttons, 1h/4h/8h/24h scheduling, adjustable intensity, under 38 dB
Worn on the body rather than placed in a room - the right answer when the gift is about the person and not the house
from ₹379
A coverage rating assumes one connected body of air. Vaayu's figure describes an open-plan volume - a living-dining floor, a duplex's main level, a double-height hall. A house with every internal door shut is not one volume, and the figure does not transfer to it. Every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, and its country of origin is India. Fragrance adds a scent to a space; it does not remove, neutralise or purify one, and the dry residue-free mist is a statement about residue rather than about air quality. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Prices above are published retail prices; bulk orders are welcome and quantities are settled on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531. SOSA is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The honest spec sheet
What the Vaayu page publishes, and what it does not
Everything below is on the live product page. Anything not on this list is not something a page like this should state.
The machine - waterless cold-air diffusion, dry and residue-free, no water and no heat. 165 x 80.5 x 215 mm, 0.9 kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted. DC 12V / 1A, 5W. Under 38 dB. Auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS. Country of origin India.
Control - a 400ml refillable tank, Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1h, 4h, 8h or 24h, day scheduling and adjustable intensity. This is what makes it workable in a house that is empty for stretches, or a room used only at weekends.
In the box - every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets, all at ₹11,999. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand.
The fragrance - alcohol-free, water-free oils formulated for cold-air diffusion. SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm and ₹1,849 for 300 gm and are published for Vaayu and Safar. The water-based ultrasonic bottles belong to a different kind of machine.
Not published, and therefore never stated here: how long a 400ml fill lasts as a single figure - the page says about 75 days in one place and 90 or more in another; what a second unit adds; any warranty period, service interval or filter; any installation service; any app name, phone compatibility or Bluetooth range; and any running or electricity cost. Those go to WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
Not sure whether the house needs a machine or a bottle? Tell SOSA on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 four things: roughly how much of the ground floor is one connected open volume, whether the internal doors stay open or shut, how often the house is actually occupied, and what you want to spend. You will get one straight answer rather than a catalogue - including the times the honest answer is a reed diffuser from ₹749 or a duo set from ₹1,498 rather than a machine. What is not on this page, because SOSA does not publish it: what a second unit adds, any warranty period, any installation service, any running or electricity cost, and any app or Bluetooth compatibility detail. One thing to check before you buy: the Vaayu page states the life of a 400ml fill two different ways - about 75 days in one place and 90 or more in another - and it depends on intensity and scheduled hours in any case, so ask rather than plan around a number. Every Vaayu ships with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances, 100 ml each; SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are ₹1,049 for 100 gm and ₹1,849 for 300 gm. Bulk orders are welcome and custom label or logo on product is available; quantities and anything commercial are settled on WhatsApp rather than priced on a page. Bespoke composition, a fragrance composed for you by Sonal, is a real SOSA service and is also discussed there. Where SOSA is: an Indian fragrance house based in Pune, sending orders across India, with no shop, stockist, counter or warehouse in any other city.

A note from Sonal
The messages I find hardest to answer are the ones that begin with an apology. They have just finished building the house. I don't want to sound cheap, but I also can't buy them anything that matters at that scale. And underneath it is a real anxiety: that after years of drawings and delays and site visits, whatever you turn up with will look like a token.
What I would say is that the anxiety is aimed at the wrong thing. You are not competing with the house. Nobody is. The people who built it spent two years choosing between four shades of the same stone, and there is no object you can hand over that will register on that scale. Trying is how people end up buying a vase that gets moved to a spare room.
The reason I keep coming back to scent for these particular houses is unromantic. It is the last layer, and it is the only one nobody planned. An architect resolves the volume, a designer resolves the surfaces, a lighting consultant resolves the evening, and then everybody stops - because scent is not on anybody's drawing. So it is one of the few things left that adds to a finished house without arguing with a single decision already made in it.
The part I would be careful about is the number. Vaayu publishes a coverage figure, which almost nothing in home fragrance does, and I would rather you read it strictly than generously. About 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft, of air that is actually connected. A ground floor that opens living into dining into a stairwell is that. A bungalow with six closed doors is not that, whatever its total square footage says on paper, and a page that blurs the two is doing you no favours.
Frequently asked questions
Will one SOSA Vaayu be enough for a duplex like that?
It is enough for the connected shared volume, which is what the published figure describes - up to 1000 cubic metres, stated as about 2,000 to 3,000 square feet of one connected body of air. If the stair is open at both ends, that usually includes both shared levels. If a landing door shuts the upper floor off, the machine serves the floor it stands on and the other level needs its own answer.
Can I scent the common areas without the scent reaching the bedrooms?
That is what happens by default. A coverage rating applies to connected air, and a closed door ends the connection, so a machine on the shared floor does not work its way into a shut bedroom. Bedrooms that want a scent are handled separately with a reed diffuser from Rs 749, per room and per person.
How is it controlled, and does it have to run all day?
It is controlled by a Bluetooth app or the buttons on the unit, with run windows of 1, 4, 8 or 24 hours, chosen days and adjustable intensity, plus auto-stop and a key-lock. So it can be scheduled to the hours the shared floor is actually in use. Operation is published as under 38 dB. SOSA does not publish an app name, a phone compatibility list or a connection range.
What is in the box, and what does the refilling cost afterwards?
Every Vaayu is supplied with four SOSA Hotel Collection fragrances of 100 ml each, in one of three published four-scent sets, all at Rs 11,999. SOSA waterless nebuliser refills are Rs 1,049 for 100 gm and Rs 1,849 for 300 gm. The tank is 400 ml and refillable, and the page gives its life two ways - about 75 days in the specification data and 90 or more in the body copy - so ask on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531.
Does a scent machine do anything about cooking smells drifting up the stairwell?
No. Fragrance adds a scent to a space; it does not remove, neutralise, mask or purify anything, and it does not clean the air. A stairwell that carries cooking through the house is a ventilation question and an extraction question, and it stays one. What the machine offers is a dry, residue-free mist, which is a statement about residue on surfaces rather than about air quality.

About the coverage figure: a rating assumes one connected body of air. The published figure describes an open-plan volume such as a living-dining floor, a duplex's main level or a double-height hall, and does not describe a property whose rooms are separated by closed doors, whatever its total floor area. No guidance is published on what a second unit adds. About tank life: the Vaayu product page states the life of one 400 ml fill in two different ways - approximately 75 days in its specification and FAQ data, and 90 or more days in its body copy - and in either case it depends on the intensity setting and the scheduled hours, so no single figure is stated on this page. What is not published, and is therefore not stated here: any warranty period, service interval or filter; any installation service; any app name, phone compatibility or Bluetooth range; any running or electricity cost; and any multi-unit coverage. Limits of this guide: fragrance adds a scent to a space. It does not remove, neutralise, mask or purify odour, it does not clean the air, and no SOSA product makes any health, antibacterial or air-purifying claim; a dry residue-free mist is a statement about residue and not about air quality. No claim is made anywhere on this page about mood, stress, calm, sleep or wellbeing, nor about how any recipient or guest will feel, nor about what a gift does for any business result. No page here characterises any recipient's wealth or describes people who own particular kinds of property; where a property value appears it is the figure the reader themselves supplied as context. SOSA blends described as hotel-inspired are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. SOSA Home & Body is an Indian fragrance house based in Pune, Maharashtra, sending orders across India, with no shop, showroom, stockist, counter or warehouse in any other city.
