Every sense in a showroom is specified except one. Light has a lighting designer, materials have a schedule, acoustics get considered in the ceiling build - and smell has no drawing convention, no line in the bill of quantities and nobody responsible for it, which is why it is decided by accident after handover.
Quick answers — read this first
Why should interior designers plan for fragrance in a jewellery showroom? Because the decisions that determine how a space can be scented are all made at drawing stage - ceiling heights, enclosed room count, HVAC layout, partition placement and door positions - while the scenting itself is usually decided after handover, when none of those can be changed. Planning it early costs nothing and prevents avoidable constraints.
What should be on a showroom drawing for fragrance? Very little, which is why it is easy to include: a note of intended delivery positions relative to air movement, a power point where a unit will sit, provision for each enclosed room including the billing area, and a check that no intended position falls in the direct path of an air conditioning outlet.
Does fragrance need to be integrated into HVAC? Not necessarily. A waterless unit such as the Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is HVAC-independent and works in leased or older premises where ducted integration is impossible. Where ducting exists and the space is large, an HVAC-integrated system such as the Aangan (Rs 25,999) suits 8,000 to 10,000 square feet.
The short answer
Short answer: smell is the only sense in a showroom with no drawing convention, no specification line and no consultant - yet the decisions governing it (ceiling heights, enclosed rooms, HVAC layout, partitions, doors) are all made at drawing stage. Planning it costs nothing: delivery positions, a power point, and provision for every enclosed room. Vaayu Rs 11,999, Aangan Rs 25,999; WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for showrooms to ~1000m³; small-store systems from ₹1,799; HVAC from ₹25,999.

A jewellery purchase is one of the most emotional transactions in Indian retail - trust, celebration and aspiration in one visit. Scent marketing gives that visit a signature: one refined fragrance, held evenly across the showroom, running on a schedule no staff member has to remember. Customers experience it as "this store feels premium" - the exact feeling that precedes a high-value purchase.
Why does this belong in the design stage rather than after opening?
Because of a gap in how showrooms are specified. 1. Every other sense has a professional. Light has a lighting design; materials have a finishes schedule; acoustics are considered in the ceiling and floor build; even the tactile experience of a display case is decided by somebody. Smell has no drawing convention, no symbol, no line in the bill of quantities and no consultant - so it falls through, and gets settled after handover by whoever is available, working around whatever the building turned out to be. 2. But the decisions were made on the drawings. Ceiling height determines the volume to be served, and jewellery ranges from low older ceilings to double-height atria. The number of enclosed rooms determines the unit count, because air does not cross a closed door - and consultation rooms, cabins and enclosed billing areas are all drawn at this stage. HVAC layout determines whether ducted integration is even available. Partition placement creates or removes dead corners. Door positions determine how much air exchanges with the street. Every one of those is fixed before anybody thinks about fragrance. 3. What planning actually requires is trivial. A note of intended delivery positions relative to where air will move; a power point where a unit will sit, above sightline or behind fitted furniture; provision listed for each enclosed room including billing; and a check that no intended position sits in the direct path of an air conditioning outlet, which will strip delivery and dump it somewhere unintended. That is a paragraph and two symbols, not a discipline. 4. Retrofit still works - it just inherits the drawings. A Vaayu (₹11,999) is HVAC-independent and installs into a finished showroom in an afternoon, which is why most stores in this cluster are retrofits. What retrofit cannot do is undo a dead corner created by a partition or add a power point where the plaster is finished. Where ducting exists and the building is large, an Aangan (₹25,999) serves 8,000 to 10,000 square feet. Send drawings at design stage on WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. The specification gap
The three reasons this belongs on the drawings - the ownership gap, the decisions already being made, and what retrofit cannot recover.
Why this works
Smell is the one sense with no drawing convention
The showroom standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Small-store systems from ₹1,799.
Fragrance is unusual among the sensory dimensions of a retail interior in having no professional home. There is no established drawing symbol for a scent delivery position, no standard specification clause, no consultant that a jewellery client expects to appoint, and nothing in a typical bill of quantities that would prompt the question. The consequence is not that the subject is rejected - it is that it is never raised, and matters that are never raised get settled by default. In practice the default is that a store opens, somebody notices after a few weeks that the space feels flat, and a system is bought and placed wherever a socket happens to exist. The result is usually adequate and occasionally poor, and in either case it was determined by accident rather than by design. For a designer, this is a small and genuinely useful gap to fill, because the effort involved is minimal and the client-facing benefit is disproportionate: the designer who raises it is the one who thought about how the space would actually feel to occupy, which is a strong position in a category where the client is buying atmosphere as much as fit-out.
Tip: matters that are never raised get settled by default - and the default is a socket that happened to be there.

Decisions already being made
Five drawing decisions that fix the outcome
The reason design-stage involvement matters is that the variables governing scenting are all being decided on the drawings for other reasons. Ceiling height sets the volume, and jewellery spans a wider range than most retail formats, so a design with a double-height atrium is specifying a substantially larger job than its footprint suggests. Enclosed room count sets the unit count, because air does not cross closed doors - and consultation rooms, a manager's cabin and an enclosed billing area are all being drawn now. HVAC layout determines whether ducted integration is available at all, and whether any natural delivery position sits in the direct path of an outlet, which will strip and misdirect it. Partitions and display islands create the dead corners that later require patching, and moving one on a drawing is free while patching one afterwards is a purchase. Door position and type determine how much air exchanges with the outside, which affects both consumption and evenness near the entrance. None of these requires the designer to know anything about fragrance; it requires only that somebody asks the question while the lines can still move.

What retrofit cannot recover
The honest boundary of the argument
It would be overstating the case to suggest that a showroom which did not plan for this is stuck with a poor outcome, and most of the stores in this cluster are retrofits that work well. Waterless delivery is HVAC-independent and installs into a finished space in an afternoon with no structural work, no ducting and no landlord permission - which is precisely why it suits the large share of Indian jewellery retail that occupies older or leased premises. So the argument for design-stage planning is not that retrofit fails; it is that retrofit inherits whatever the drawings decided. Three things specifically cannot be recovered afterwards without disruption: a dead corner created by a partition or island, which can only be patched rather than designed out; the absence of a power point in the position that air movement actually favours, which forces a compromise placement; and provision for an enclosed room that was never given one, which is solvable but was free at drawing stage. The proportionate conclusion is that planning is cheap insurance rather than a prerequisite - a paragraph in the specification that prevents three small permanent compromises.
Tip: retrofit works well. It just inherits whatever the drawings already decided.
The SOSA principle
Smell is the only sense in a showroom with no drawing convention and no consultant - yet ceiling heights, enclosed rooms, HVAC and partitions decide it before anybody thinks to ask.
Planning costs a paragraph. Retrofit works, but it inherits every constraint the drawings created.

Honest notes for jewellery retailers: scent marketing's effects on dwell time, perceived quality and recall are real but moderate - fragrance compounds a well-run store and rescues nothing; premises must be clean, cool and well ventilated first, because scent crowns good air and never substitutes for it. No fragrance harms jewellery: quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not tarnish gold, diamonds or gemstones (silver tarnish is driven by sulphur and humidity, not diffuser oils - keep any machine's mist away from direct contact with open displays as basic practice). The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel or jewellery brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
Jewellery retailers understand atmosphere better than almost any other business - you light every display like a stage, you serve chai in good cups, you train your team to make a bride feel like the only customer in the store. And then, in most stores, the air itself is left to chance: the street, the incense stick, the phenyl from the morning mopping. The most emotional purchase your customer will make this year deserves better air than that.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian jewellery stores is the same architecture the global luxury houses use: one signature, sized to the showroom, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. The machines matter (throw, coverage, scheduling), but the strategy matters more, and it is in every guide we publish. If you want it applied to your specific store, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - I read the store descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
At what stage of the design should this be raised?
At layout stage, when partitions, room positions and ceiling heights are still moving, rather than at finishes stage when only surfaces remain adjustable. What is being protected at layout stage is the shape of the air: whether the floor has a corner that nothing will reach, whether the consultation rooms are drawn with enough ventilation for people to sit in them for hours, whether the billing area is a recess with no circulation, and whether the natural delivery positions coincide with power and with air movement. A five-minute conversation at that point covers it. By the time the drawings are at finishes stage the useful contribution shrinks to noting power points, which is still worth doing but recovers much less. If the project is already past layout, send the drawings anyway - the specification can be built around what exists rather than around what was hoped for.
What do you actually need from a designer to specify a system?
Five things, all of which already exist on the drawings: a floor plan showing partitions and display islands, the ceiling heights zone by zone, a list of every enclosed room including the manager's cabin and any enclosed billing area, the HVAC layout if there is one including outlet positions, and the entrance configuration - single door, double door, air lock, or open to a street. Photographs of a comparable completed project help calibrate expectations about the finish and the sightlines. From that we can propose unit count, sizing by volume, delivery positions and a power requirement, which the designer can then coordinate into the drawings before anything is built. It is a short exchange rather than a consultancy, and the output is a paragraph the designer can carry into their own specification.
Do designers usually resist adding another consultant to a project?
Understandably, which is why this is deliberately not a consultancy. There is no additional professional to appoint, no coordination drawings to manage and no site attendance required - the input is a specification note and a couple of positions marked on an existing plan. For most projects the entire exchange is one message with drawings attached and one response with the specification. The reason it is worth the designer's few minutes is client-facing rather than technical: jewellery clients are buying an atmosphere, they will notice how the finished space feels, and the designer who anticipated the one sensory dimension nobody else specified is in a strong position when the client walks in after handover. It is also insurance against a specific and irritating outcome, which is a client adding equipment to a finished scheme in a position the designer would never have chosen.
What about heritage or older buildings where nothing can be altered?
This is where the waterless approach earns most of its value, and it is worth designers knowing it exists. A Vaayu at Rs 11,999 requires no ducting, no structural work, no ceiling penetration and no permanent alteration - it needs a position and a power point, and it can be removed leaving nothing behind, which matters in leased and protected premises where landlord or conservation permissions are restrictive. The design contribution in that situation shifts from integration to placement: identifying where air already moves in a building whose air movement is determined by existing openings rather than by mechanical ventilation, and avoiding positions that will simply push output out of a doorway. Older buildings also tend to have more enclosed rooms and more compartmentalisation than modern open-plan fit-outs, so the room count matters more and small units carry more of the work.
Can the same planning approach apply to a multi-branch rollout?
Yes, and it is more valuable there because the specification becomes reusable. For a group opening several showrooms, the sensible artefact is a standing specification note that goes into every project brief: the register the group has standardised on, the principle that every enclosed room gets its own provision, the requirement for a power point at the intended delivery position, and the instruction to size by cubic volume rather than footprint. Individual branches still need their own sizing because volumes and room counts differ, but the decisions that should be identical across the group - particularly the register - stop being made locally by whoever is fitting out. That single document prevents the most expensive failure in multi-branch scenting, which is branches selecting their own fragrances and a customer meeting two different houses under one name. Send the group's plans and the standing note can be drafted alongside: WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with longer dwell time, improved store and service evaluations, and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives unclean or poorly ventilated premises. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind luxury signature scents. Quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not damage gold, diamonds or gemstones; silver tarnish is driven by sulphur compounds and humidity. SOSA systems: Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (Rs 1,799) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (Rs 3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from Rs 299; refills 100ml Rs 999); SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (Rs 25,999) and SOSA Meenar (Rs 38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
