Why is my home still smelling bad?
Because you are masking the smell rather than removing what causes it. Fragrance - from a diffuser, a spray, a candle - sits on top of an odour. It does not neutralise the source. So if a bin, a drain, a damp patch or a pet area is still producing the smell, it comes straight back the moment the fragrance thins. The only way to actually fix a bad-smelling home is to find the source, remove or clean it, ventilate, and then use fragrance to keep a clean room pleasant. Scent is the finish, never the fix.

Where the smell is really coming from
Before any fragrance, play detective. In most homes the culprit is one of a short, predictable list. Walk the house with your nose, not your assumptions.
Bins and food waste. The obvious one, and the most common. Kitchen bins, a forgotten bag, food scraps in the disposal. Empty, clean, and dry the bin itself, not just its contents.
Drains and traps. A dry or dirty U-bend in a sink, floor drain or bathroom lets sewer smell rise. Run water to fill the trap, and clean the drain.
Damp and mildew. A slow leak, a damp cupboard, a towel that never fully dries, monsoon-damp walls. This smells musty and it is a health issue as much as a scent one - find and dry the source.
Pets, shoes and fabric. Pet bedding, litter, a shoe rack, a rug that has absorbed months of air. Soft materials hold smell. Wash, air or clean them.
The fridge and hidden corners. An old container at the back of the fridge, a spill under a cabinet, a bag left in a cupboard. These hide, so check the places you do not look.
How to hunt it down: air the house fully first so you are not nose-blind, then go room by room, cupboard by cupboard, sniffing close. The smell is almost always stronger right at its source.
The right order: fix, ventilate, freshen
Do these three in order. Skip the first two and the third only buys you an hour.
1. Fix or remove the source. Empty the bin, clean the drain, dry the damp, wash the fabric. This is the step that actually solves the problem.
2. Ventilate. Open windows, get air moving, let the stale air out and fresh air in. Even fifteen minutes of cross-breeze changes a room.
3. Then freshen with a diffuser. Now that the room is clean and aired, a cool-mist diffuser with a water-based fragrance keeps it pleasant all day - an even, continuous scent doing what it does best on a clean canvas.
Myth: enough fragrance will overpower any bad smell. It will not. Pile scent on an active source and you get a confusing mix of both. The smell wins in the end, because the source keeps producing it.
Mask versus remove
Masking adds a pleasant smell over an unpleasant one - temporary, and it fails as the fragrance fades. Removing takes away what produces the odour - permanent. Fragrance can only mask. Cleaning and ventilation remove. Use them in that order and fragrance becomes a finish you enjoy, not a cover-up you rely on.
