Stop trying to make the floors identical. Decide what counts as out of range.
Quick answers — read this first
Why does the same setting feel different on different floors? Three mechanisms: warm air rising through lift shafts and stairwells all day, the sun heating one elevation and raising release rates, and different occupancy and door traffic by floor.

Should I adjust each floor to match? No. Chasing equality raises the whole building over time, because you will always be raising the quiet floor rather than lowering the strong one.

What should I do instead? Set every floor identically, record it, and define a tolerance band - what counts as normal variation and what counts as a fault worth investigating.
The short answer
Short answer: Stack effect, sun on the elevation, and different traffic. Set a tolerance band, not an equality target.
The pick: the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) as the flagship delivery gift; volume gifts from ₹299; reed diffusers from ₹749; the Vaayu (₹11,999) for your own premises.

A customer gift works when it survives the drive home - sweets vanish in a day and keychains join a drawer, but a fragrance is used daily in the customer's own car or living room, replaying your brand at every use. The method: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, brand the gesture with your card, pilot and scale. This guide walks the exact play, with real SOSA options at every band.
Straight answer
Why does the same setting feel different on different floors of my hotel?
Because a hotel is not one building. It is a stack of slightly different ones, and three mechanisms make each floor its own. One: the stack effect. Warm air rises through lift shafts, service lifts and stairwells continuously, so every floor receives whatever the floors below it produce, and the ninth floor starts from a higher baseline than the second before you have set anything. Two: the sun. An elevation that takes afternoon sun runs warmer, and warmth raises release rates from every source - a reed, a machine, the carpet, the curtains - so the same floor differs from itself between morning and four o'clock. Three: traffic. Occupancy, door openings and housekeeping timings differ floor to floor, and every door opening moves a parcel of room air into the corridor. The answer is not to chase equality - that only ever raises the building, because you will raise the quiet floor rather than lower the strong one. Set identically, record it, and define a tolerance band. Hotel Collection from ₹299, SOSA Sukoon ₹1,799, SOSA Boond ₹799. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

Because it is not one building. It is a stack of them

This is one of those questions where the honest answer is more useful than the reassuring one, because the reassuring answer would be that with enough adjustment the floors can be made to match, and they cannot. A multi-storey building is not one air volume. It is a stack of volumes joined by vertical paths you do not control, exposed to different amounts of sun, and used by different numbers of people at different times. Three mechanisms produce the variation, and it is worth being able to tell them apart, because two of them are normal and one of them occasionally is not. Mechanism one is the stack effect, which is the largest and the most consistent. Warm air rises, and a tall building offers it excellent routes: lift shafts, service lift shafts, stairwells and vertical service risers all run the full height and all move air continuously as cars travel, doors open and temperature differences drive convection. The consequence is that every floor receives a contribution from the floors below it, cumulatively, so the top of a building starts from a higher baseline than the bottom before you have installed anything at all. This is why a lift lobby on the ninth floor with an identical device on an identical setting reads stronger than the one on the second. It is also why a strong ground-floor lobby or an over-set restaurant announces itself on upper floors, and why a food note appearing on several floors at once at meal times is a ground-floor problem rather than a floor problem. The important operational consequence is this: if you find yourself wanting to raise the lower floors to match the upper ones, you have diagnosed the stack effect rather than a fault, and raising them is precisely the wrong response. Mechanism two is solar gain, and it is the one that makes a floor differ from itself across a day. An elevation that takes strong afternoon sun runs warmer, sometimes considerably, and warmth raises the release rate of every source in the space - a reed diffuser most obviously, since reed output rises with warmth and falls with cold, but also a machine's evaporation, the carpet, the curtains, the upholstery and any soft material holding months of absorption. So a floor can read correctly at nine in the morning and heavy at four in the afternoon with nothing having been adjusted, and a west-facing wing will differ from an east-facing one on the same floor. The tell for this is time of day rather than height: if the variation tracks the clock, it is thermal, and the response is to set for the warm hour rather than the cool one, since a level that is correct at four is merely quiet at nine, while the reverse is a complaint. Mechanism three is traffic, which is the least discussed and genuinely matters. Floors differ in occupancy, in the mix of room types, in how many doors open per hour, in when housekeeping works them, and in whether they carry a club lounge, a function room or a service area. Every door opening moves a parcel of room air into the corridor and a parcel of corridor air into the room, so a busy floor has far more mixing than a quiet one. A floor being turned over at two in the afternoon behaves nothing like the same floor at ten at night. Now, what to do. The wrong answer is to chase equality, and it is worth explaining why it is not merely futile but actively harmful. Chasing equality means adjusting floors until they match, and in practice adjustment is always upward, for two reasons: the human tendency is to fix the weak case rather than reduce the strong one, and everybody who works in a hotel adapts to a steady background within about an hour and stops perceiving it, with adaptation running only one way - so a level never seems to have grown, only to have gone. Over a year, a property that chases floor-to-floor equality will end up with a building set considerably higher than it started, with the top floors uncomfortable and nobody able to say when it happened. The right answer has three parts. First, set every equivalent zone identically and record it: floor, device, register, setting, date, and who set it. Identical settings are the baseline against which variation is meaningful; different settings make diagnosis impossible. Second, define a tolerance band, which is the useful discipline nobody applies. Decide what counts as normal variation - a noticeable difference between the second floor and the ninth, or between morning and afternoon on a sunny elevation - and what counts as out of range and worth investigating. Something is out of range when a guest would describe it, when one floor is legible while another is not, or when the difference is a change in character rather than in level. Third, audit a column rather than a floor. Ride to the top and walk down, stopping at each lift lobby, at four in the afternoon, with somebody who has come in from the street. A column walk shows you the gradient in twenty minutes and immediately distinguishes a stack effect, which is smooth and cumulative, from a fault, which is abrupt and local. There is a fourth mechanism that is a genuine fault rather than physics, and a column walk finds it: a device that has been adjusted by somebody, a bottle that is far older or fresher than its neighbours, or a machine that has been topped up rather than emptied and rinsed. Track bottle age alongside settings, because at a dozen devices that is the variable nobody records and it produces exactly this symptom. On the scheme itself, nothing changes. Lift lobbies well below the main lobby, and they earn most in a hotel because every guest passes one twice on every journey and, unlike a corridor, they hold a level reliably. Corridors very low or nothing, because they receive room air at every door opening and clear almost none of it. Lift cars nothing, ever. Guest rooms lightest of all. One register across the property, varied only by level, because a change of level reads as the building quietening while a change of register reads as a fault. Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, is the safest whole-property choice and is particularly forgiving in a building with vertical variation because it holds its character at a whisper and does not become sweet when it accumulates. Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, is dry and structural. White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, is the softest we make. All seven are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, they are SOSA's own interpretations, and we are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. Hardware: a Sukoon at Rs 1,799 for a lift lobby, a Boond at Rs 799 for a small one, a Megh at Rs 3,499 with a 6L tank for a large public volume, and reeds at Rs 749 to Rs 849 where continuous low output with nothing to switch suits the space - three to four months from a bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml. Remember that reed output rises with warmth and falls with cold, which means reeds show floor-to-floor and season-to-season variation more visibly than machines do; that is not a defect, it is the trade for having nothing to switch and nothing to service. Machines take the water-based Hotel Collection at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, never reed oil, which can damage them. We make no therapeutic, medical or wellness claims of any kind, and SOSA ambient fragrance is for the air of a room only. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Volume pricing is quoted against a zone list on WhatsApp.

Why this works
Three mechanisms
1 Warm air rises through shafts and stairs all day 2 Sun on an elevation changes release rates by the hour 3 Occupancy differs floor to floor, and so does door traffic 4 So define a tolerance band instead of chasing equality
The flagship delivery gift: the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - a rechargeable waterless car diffuser with three hotel-inspired scents in the box. Per-unit gifts from ₹299; volume pricing on WhatsApp.
01
Height, sun and traffic
Three mechanisms, two of them normal
Warm air rises through shafts and stairs all day, so upper floors start higher. Sun on an elevation raises every release rate. And door traffic differs floor to floor, which changes mixing.
Tip: Variation tracking the clock is thermal, not structural.
02
Chasing equality raises the building
Because adjustment is always upward
You will raise the quiet floor rather than lower the strong one, and adaptation runs one way, so nobody perceives the ratchet. A year later the top floors are uncomfortable and nobody can say when.
03
Set a tolerance band instead
And audit a column, not a floor
Identical settings recorded with dates, then a decision about what counts as normal variation and what is out of range. Ride to the top and walk down at four in the afternoon.
Tip: Smooth and cumulative is physics. Abrupt and local is a fault.
The SOSA principle
Wanting to raise the lower floors to match the upper ones
means you have found the stack effect, not a fault.

And three mechanisms make each floor slightly its own

A multi-storey hotel is not one air volume - it is a stack of volumes joined by vertical paths you do not control, lit by different amounts of sun and used by different numbers of people. Three mechanisms produce the variation. The stack effect is the largest and most consistent: warm air rises, and lift shafts, service shafts, stairwells and risers run the full height and move air continuously, so every floor receives a cumulative contribution from the floors below and the ninth starts from a higher baseline than the second before anything is installed. Solar gain is the one that makes a floor differ from itself across a day - a sunny elevation runs warmer, and warmth raises the release rate of every source, including reeds, whose output rises with warmth and falls with cold, and including the carpet and curtains. If the variation tracks the clock rather than the height, it is thermal. And traffic, which is least discussed: floors differ in occupancy, room mix, door openings per hour and housekeeping timing, and every door opening moves a parcel of room air into the corridor and corridor air into the room. Chasing equality is the wrong response, because adjustment is always upward and adaptation never corrects it back down.

The SOSA business gifting edit

Whatever your business gifts, the logic is the same: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, keep the register gentle and crowd-safe, and brand the gesture with your card rather than your logo on the product. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so every customer gift quietly gives twice. Here is the full business range by per-unit band.

Honest notes for business gifters: customer taste varies, so volume programmes should run gentle, crowd-tested registers - fresh, clean and lightly floral scents are received well across every profile, and space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) avoid the personal-taste risk of skin perfume entirely. Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing, pilot batches, branded cards and custom hamper builds are quoted on WhatsApp - and signature-scent development for your brand is a consultation with our perfumer, not an off-the-shelf item, so timelines are discussed case by case. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic diffusers use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - the two are not interchangeable. All personal fragrances are alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant. WhatsApp bulk desk: +91 96192 18531. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.

And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the same setting feel different on different floors?
Warm air rises through shafts and stairwells all day so upper floors start higher, sun on an elevation raises release rates, and door traffic differs by floor.
Should I adjust floors to match each other?
No. Adjustment is always upward in practice, so chasing equality raises the whole building over a year without anybody perceiving the ratchet.
How do I tell physics from a fault?
A stack effect is smooth and cumulative by height. A fault is abrupt and local - usually a device somebody adjusted, or a bottle far older or fresher than its neighbours.
What is a column walk?
Ride to the top floor and walk down, stopping at each lift lobby, at four in the afternoon, with somebody who has come in from the street. Twenty minutes shows you the whole gradient.
Do reeds vary more than machines?
Yes, because reed output rises with warmth and falls with cold. That is the trade for having nothing to switch and nothing to service. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the customer-gifting advice applies whatever your business finally buys.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
