If you have just opened and the room smells of glue, rubber and new furniture, I want to start with the reassuring part, because most owners writing to me at this stage are quietly panicking. Nothing has gone wrong. This is what a brand-new retail interior smells like, and it does not last.
Quick answers — read this first
Is it normal for a newly opened shoe store to smell of glue and new furniture? Completely normal. You have assembled, in a matter of weeks, a room in which every single component is newly manufactured: joinery and its adhesive, MDF and plywood, laminate bonded to substrate, fresh paint and primer, sealant along every junction, new flooring and its adhesive, new carpet and backing, and the foam and fabric in new seating. On top of that sits a full opening delivery of freshly made, solvent-cemented footwear. All of these release volatile components after manufacture. It is the smell of a new building rather than the smell of a problem.
How long before my new store stops smelling like this? Weeks rather than days, and it improves on a curve rather than a cliff. Off-gassing is loudest immediately after installation and slows steadily, so most owners find week four dramatically better than week one and week twelve a quiet tailing off. The variable that matters most is ventilation: a store with genuine outside air moving through it settles far faster than the same fit-out shut up overnight with only a recirculating split unit. Warm and well-aired moves it along; sealed and cool holds it.
Should I buy a scent machine to deal with it? Not in week one, and I say that as somebody who sells them. Two reasons. First, a fragrance added now sits alongside the off-gassing rather than replacing it, so you get both. Second, and more expensively, you would be choosing and setting a scent against a background that will have disappeared by month three - which is exactly how stores end up permanently over-scented. Ventilate, handle your cartons well, keep the stockroom door shut, and take the signature decision when the room has stopped changing under you.
The short answer
Short answer: Because everything in the building is new simultaneously. Joinery adhesive, MDF, laminate, paint, sealant, new flooring, carpet and seating foam all off-gas after installation, and a full opening delivery of freshly made, cement-bonded footwear adds its own. It fades with air changes and weeks, fastest at the start. This is a normal new-building smell, and the right response is ventilation and patience rather than equipment.
The pick: Nothing this month. Run the ventilation hard, including outside trading hours where the building allows it, open cartons at a back door, keep the stockroom door shut, and let the room settle for several weeks before you choose anything.
Next step: When the room has stopped changing, tell us the floor size and the stock mix and we will write the signature brief - ask for a store scenting plan.
Every component in a new store is newly manufactured at the same moment. That is a temporary condition, and the honest advice is to ventilate and wait.
Why does a brand-new footwear store smell of glue, rubber and new furniture at once?
Because you have done something unusual: you have made every object in a room new on the same day. The interior is the largest part. Shopfitting joinery is built with adhesive at every joint and carcass; MDF and plywood are bonded panel products; laminate is glued to substrate; walls carry fresh primer and paint; every junction has a bead of silicone or acrylic sealant; the floor is new, and if it is vinyl or engineered board it was laid with adhesive; the carpet in the trying area is new and so is its backing; and the seating is new foam in new fabric. Every one of those releases volatile components after manufacture and installation. The stock is the second part. An opening order is the biggest, newest delivery your store will ever take - hundreds of pairs made recently, bonded with solvent cement, sealed in cartons, shipped in a container, and opened in your building over a few days. Together they produce exactly what you described, and it is a normal new-building condition rather than a fault. Here is the reassuring mechanism: off-gassing is front-loaded. The release is fastest immediately after installation and slows steadily from there, so the store you are standing in during opening week is genuinely not the store you will have in month three. The variable that decides how quickly is ventilation, because the volatile fraction leaves with the air and by no other route. Run the air hard - including overnight and on closed days, where the building and the shutter allow it - and let the fit-out settle. Open cartons at a back door or under extraction rather than mid-floor. Keep the stockroom door shut and self-closing, because that room concentrates the newest stock in the building and vents onto your floor. What I will not do is sell you a machine this month. A fragrance now sits alongside the off-gassing rather than replacing it, so customers meet both. Worse, you would be setting a level against a background that is about to vanish, and since anyone standing in a scent all day stops noticing it, that setting tends to stay where it was put. That is how new stores end up permanently over-scented. We make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, eliminates or absorbs an odour, or that it cleans or purifies air, and on anything beyond how the room smells - materials, adhesives, ventilation provision - we make no health or safety claim at all; ask your ventilation engineer or the material manufacturer. Ask for a store scenting plan when the room has settled, and we will write it then rather than now.
Everything is new at once, off-gassing is loudest at the start, and ventilation is the accelerator. Wait, air the place, and choose a signature later.
For month three, when the room has settled and you can smell what your store is actually like: SOSA Mountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage and cedar - from ₹849 for a leather and dark-wood interior. Passive, no power, no water, no residue on new joinery or glass. Bought in week one, it would simply be a third new smell in the room.
The most useful thing I can tell a brand-new store is not to buy anything from this row yet. Nothing here shortens off-gassing, and choosing a register now means choosing it against a background that will be gone by month three. Keep the money. Spend the opening weeks ventilating hard, moving your unboxing to a back door and getting the stockroom door to close itself, then come back when the room has stopped changing.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry woods sit under leather and extend it, which makes this the natural register for a dark-wood, leather-led fit-out - once that fit-out has settled and you can judge a scent against the room you will actually trade in.
Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus. Cool and dry, and the honest counterweight in a rubber-led room. Passive and waterless, so nothing damp goes near new joinery, laminate or board. Again: a month-three decision, not a week-one one.
Three things to do in the opening weeks. Two are free, and the third is to wait.
1
First, ventilate harder than feels necessary
The volatile fraction leaves with the air and by no other route
In the first weeks, air is the whole intervention. Open up generously during the day, and where the building and the shutter allow, ventilate outside trading hours too - overnight and on closed days are when a fit-out does a great deal of its settling and when nobody is inconvenienced. Be clear about what your air conditioning is doing: a split unit chills and returns the same air, which is comfort rather than exchange, so a sealed, cool, beautifully finished store can hold its new-building smell far longer than a scruffier one with a back door open. If you are in a mall, ask the mall engineer what fresh-air provision your unit actually has, because that is a different specification from cooling capacity. I will not print a target air-change number: it depends on your volume, your fit-out and your equipment, and that belongs to a ventilation engineer.
Tip: the loudest week is the first. If week four feels the same as week one, the question is whether any outside air is genuinely reaching the room.
Mountain Breeze is the register for a settled leather-led room, from ₹849.
Where you open the cartons decides where the smell goes
The opening order is the largest volume of new stock the store will ever receive, and it arrives having sat sealed in cartons inside a container for weeks. All of that accumulated load leaves the moment the tape is cut. If that happens in the middle of the showroom during trading hours, you have released it directly into the space customers stand in. Do it at a back door, at a window with air moving through, or under extraction, and most of it leaves the building instead. Then get the outer corrugated cartons out on the day they arrive rather than flattening them into a corner for a fortnight, because they are the loudest board in the building. And fit a closer to the stockroom door so it shuts itself - that room now holds the newest, densest stock you will ever have.
Tip: if the opening delivery is being unpacked on the sales floor because the stockroom is full, the stockroom is too full.
Morning Freshness - lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus - for a sneaker-led room, from ₹749.
A scent chosen in week one is chosen against a room that will not exist
This is the recommendation that costs me money and I make it anyway. If you choose and set a fragrance during the loudest phase of off-gassing, you will set it high, because you are unconsciously trying to be noticed over a background that is about to disappear. Three months later the room underneath is quiet, the setting is far too strong for it, and nobody in the building can tell - because everyone who stands in a scent all day stops registering it within days. That is the mechanism behind almost every over-scented store I have walked into. So wait. Let the room reach its resting state, then judge what it actually smells like, then choose a register that suits it, then set the level low and check it at six on a Saturday with the floor full rather than at opening on a quiet Tuesday.
Garden Bloom - British rose and night-blooming jasmine - is the occasion-boutique register, from ₹799, when the time comes.
For month three and beyond, when the fit-out has settled. For most single new stores this is a reed rather than a machine, and everything here is passive, so nothing damp goes near new joinery, board or leather. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The timing is the advice; the products are secondary. Nothing here shortens off-gassing, and we make no claim that any SOSA product removes, neutralises, eliminates or absorbs an odour, or that it cleans, purifies or disinfects air. On materials, adhesives and ventilation provision we make no health or safety claim of any kind - ask your ventilation engineer or the manufacturer. We make no claim that scent affects sales, footfall, browsing or what anybody buys. If you are in week one, buy nothing. Ask for a store scenting plan and we will time it with you.

A note from Sonal
The messages I get in opening week are the ones I most want to answer quickly, because there is real distress in them. Somebody has spent a year and a great deal of money on a room they are proud of, and the first thing a friend says when they walk in is that it smells of glue. I understand why that lands hard. It is also, genuinely, the most temporary problem anyone in this cluster writes to me about.
So I try to be useful rather than commercial. Ventilate outside trading hours. Open the opening delivery at a back door. Get the outer cartons out of the building the same day. Fit a closer to the stockroom door. Then wait - because the room is improving every week whether or not you can feel it, and you cannot choose a signature honestly while the background is still moving.
The limits, plainly. Ambient fragrance is an interior and brand decision, and we make no claim that it increases sales, footfall, browsing or influences what anyone buys. We make no therapeutic, medical or wellbeing claim of any kind, and none about building materials or ventilation. It never masks a smell that has a source, staff judgement outranks mine, it is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my newly opened footwear store smell of glue, rubber and new furniture?
Because every component in the building is newly manufactured at the same time: joinery and its adhesive, MDF and plywood, laminate, paint, sealant, new flooring, new carpet and new seating foam, plus the largest and newest stock delivery the store will ever take. All of it off-gasses after installation, and all of it fades with air changes and weeks.
Is this normal, or has something gone wrong?
It is entirely normal and it is not evidence of a fault. A brand-new retail interior is an unusual concentration of freshly made material in a small sealed volume, and it behaves exactly the way one would expect. What is not normal is a store still smelling this way at six months, which usually points at stock density and stockroom air rather than at the fit-out.
How long will it take to fade?
Weeks rather than days, on a curve that is steepest at the start. Most owners find week four dramatically better than week one, and week twelve a quiet tailing off. Ventilation is the main variable: a store aired generously, including outside trading hours, settles much faster than one shut up overnight with only a recirculating split unit.
Should I buy a scent machine in my first week?
No. A fragrance now sits alongside the off-gassing rather than replacing it, and you would be setting a level against a background that will disappear by month three - which is how stores end up permanently over-scented. Ventilate, handle the opening delivery well, and choose a signature later. Most single stores then find a reed from Rs 849 is enough.
Should I be worried about the off-gassing itself?
That is not a question a perfumer should answer, and we make no claim about it either way. What we can say is that new fit-outs and new stock off-gas and that it fades with air changes and time. If your concern goes beyond how the room smells, put it to your ventilation engineer or to the manufacturers of the materials used in the fit-out.
For an occasion boutique: Garden Bloom - British rose and night-blooming jasmine - for a settled bridal or occasion room. From ₹799.
SOSA — Clinic Scentingfor newly opened footwear stores and first-time retailers
In opening week the honest advice is to buy nothing. Run the air hard including outside trading hours, open the delivery at a back door, get the outer cartons out the same day, and fit a closer to the stockroom door. When the room has stopped changing under you - usually a matter of weeks - a reed from ₹749 is normally the whole answer for a single store. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
