Fragrance crowns a clean, dry room — it never masks damp. In monsoon and coastal humidity a living room turns musty because moisture, not dirt, has settled into the soft furnishings. So the honest answer is to dry the air first, then scent it with something that will not pour more water into the room.

2. Dry the air and keep it moving. Air the room on any dry spell, run a fan or dehumidifier for circulation, wipe down and dry damp surfaces, tuck silica gel or activated charcoal into problem corners, and never dry washing indoors. This is the part that actually removes the smell — everything else only holds it back once this is done.

This is where I have to be blunt about a mistake I see constantly: reaching for an ultrasonic mist diffuser to "freshen" a damp room.
