Why has my diffuser stopped smelling of anything?
Rule them out in this order. 1. Adaptation, which is not a fault. Ten minutes in a scented room and your perception of it drops steeply, and it does not come back while you remain there. This accounts for the majority of these questions and it is why hosts constantly top up before guests arrive. Test it properly: step outside for five minutes and walk back in. 2. Scale on the plate. Hard water leaves mineral deposits on the small vibrating disc, and as they build the mist output falls gradually enough that nobody notices the trend. Empty the tank, wipe the plate with a soft damp cloth, and descale periodically. This is the commonest genuine cause. 3. Air movement. A unit near an air-conditioning outlet or a doorway has its output carried away in one direction, so the seating area gets very little. Move it low and out of the current. 4. The register itself. Adaptation is not subtle
And it does not reverse in the room
The nose deprioritises a constant signal quickly and thoroughly. Within about ten minutes of entering a scented room, most people's perception of that scent falls to almost nothing, and it stays there for as long as they remain - it does not come back after an hour, and topping up does not restore it for more than a few minutes. This is a well-known property of the sense rather than anything unusual, and it is the reason self-assessment is useless here.
