The reed on the billing desk smells lovely, and two metres from it the floor smells of nothing, and the owner has concluded that the reed is faulty. It is not. A reed diffuser reaches one desk zone. That is not a limitation of the bottle you bought; it is the definition of the product. The floor is a different question with a different answer.
Quick answers — read this first
Why can I smell my reed diffuser only near the billing desk? Because a reed diffuser evaporates oil from six fibre reeds into still air, and evaporation in still air travels about as far as a desk zone - a metre or two in each direction. That is what a reed is for and it is doing it. Beyond that zone the air on a showroom floor is being moved by the AC, the door and running display units, and a passive source has no way to push a scent into moving air. It stops where still air stops.

Would more reeds, a bigger bottle or a second reed fix it? No. More reeds in the same bottle raise the strength within the same desk zone and shorten the bottle's life; a 130ml bottle lasts longer, not further; a second reed at a second desk makes a second desk zone with unscented floor between them. A reed is a volume control for the zone it sits in, not a range control for the room. Reach is a machine's job.

So what is the honest answer for the rest of the floor? Keep the reed at the desk if the desk is where you want it. For the floor, one SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, wall-mounted high on the wall the AC supply crosses so the moving air that defeats a reed carries the machine's dry mist instead. Under about 750 sq ft, a SOSA Sukoon (Rs 1,899) for one closed room, with the honest note that it adds moisture. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting; SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, dwell time or sales.
The short answer
Short answer: the reed is doing exactly what a reed does: evaporating into still air and reaching one desk zone. It is not faulty. The rest of the floor is moving air - AC, door, running display units - and a passive source cannot push scent into moving air. A floor needs distribution, and distribution is a machine placed on the AC path.
The pick: keep the Mountain Breeze reed (₹849) at the billing desk; for a connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) high on the supply wall. For one closed room of 300-750 sq ft, a SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899), water-based, so said honestly.
Next step: measure the connected floor, note where the AC supply enters, and ask for a showroom scenting plan - we will say whether the floor needs a machine at all, and where it would go.
How far a reed reaches, and why that is the right distanceSix fibre reeds evaporate oil at the speed of still airStill air on a showroom floor is one desk zone - a metre or twoAC, door and demo units move the rest of the air - a reed cannot followMore reeds: stronger at the desk, no further. Bigger bottle: longer, no furtherThe floor needs distribution - one machine on the AC path
The reed did not fail. It reached its desk and stopped, which is the whole of what it was ever going to do. The floor was always a different purchase.
Straight answer
Why can I smell my reed diffuser only near the billing desk?
Because you are standing in the only place a reed was ever going to reach, and I would like to explain why that is not a complaint. A reed diffuser is six fibre reeds standing in a bottle of oil. The oil climbs the reed by capillary action and evaporates from the exposed length into the air around it, and the rate at which it does that is set by the oil and the fibre, not by anything you can adjust. Evaporation from a reed travels as far as still air lets it, which in practice is a desk zone: the billing desk, the chair in front of it, a metre or two either side. Within that zone the Mountain Breeze is doing precisely what it says on the label - pine, sage and cedar, dry, reading as a well-kept home - and if you stand at the desk for a minute you can confirm it. Now step off the desk. The air two metres out is not still. It is being pushed by the AC supply, pulled by the return, exchanged at the door every time it opens, blown by any display air-conditioner on demo and drawn up by any running chimney. A reed has no fan, no pump and no pressure; it cannot push a scent into moving air, and the moving air carries away whatever drifts to its edge. The reed stops where still air stops, and on a showroom floor that is the edge of the desk. This is why every attempt to make a reed do more fails in a predictable way. Flip the reeds and it is stronger at the desk for an hour, then the same. Add more reeds to the bottle and the desk zone gets stronger, the bottle empties faster, and the far display still smells of nothing. Buy the 130ml and it lasts fourteen to eighteen weeks instead of six to eight, at the desk. Put a second reed on a second desk and you now have two desk zones with a corridor of nothing between them. A reed is a volume control for the zone it sits in. It is not, and cannot be, a range control for the room. My reed diffusers are too weak is the family pillar on exactly this, and reed versus waterless machine is the honest table. So the reed is right for what it does, and what it does is a desk in a studio under about 300 sq ft - which, if that is your showroom, means you have already bought the correct thing and this page ends here. For a floor, reach is a machine's job. One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 breaks a fragrance oil into a dry mist and pushes it, and mounted high on the wall the AC supply crosses it uses the very air movement that defeats a reed to carry the scent across a connected floor of about 1,500-3,000 sq ft, reaching the return last; why fragrance disappears when the AC runs is the placement in full. Between 300 and 750 sq ft, one closed room, a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest middle step, with the honest note that it is water-based and adds a little moisture. Whichever machine, the register stays the one a premium showroom should smell of, set for the advisor, and the reed can stay on the desk doing its one job. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music: SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, no claim about what it does to any appliance or finish, and it is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction. Any live kitchen or coffee counter stays unscented. Ask for a showroom scenting plan with the floor measured.
A reed evaporates into still air and reaches one desk zone - that is the product, not a fault. Beyond the desk the AC, door and demo units move the air and a passive source cannot follow. More reeds or a bigger bottle change strength or duration, never reach. A floor needs a machine: one Vaayu (Rs 11,999) high on the supply wall from about 1,500 sq ft; a Sukoon (Rs 1,899) for one room.
For the floor beyond the desk, one SOSA Vaayu - waterless, 1000m³, wall or HVAC mount, timer and key-lock - at ₹11,999 uses the moving air that stops a reed to carry the scent instead. The reed stays at the desk.

Five things that decide how far a reed reaches

None of these can be changed by buying a different reed. Together they explain why the desk zone is the reed's whole territory, and why that is the right territory for it.

1
Evaporation
A fixed rate from six fibres, set by the oil and the reed
Oil climbs the fibre reed by capillary action and evaporates from its exposed length into the air it touches, and the rate is a property of the oil's base and the reed's fibre - which is why SOSA's reeds are alcohol-free and coconut-derived and why they last six to eight weeks at 50ml. Nothing about the room can make the reed evaporate faster except heat, and heat also empties the bottle sooner. The output is small, steady and unadjustable, and it is sized for a desk, a hallway table, a bedside - places where the air is still and the person is close. That is a design, and it is a good one for the job it describes.
Test: hold your hand a metre above the reeds. That faint warmth-and-scent is the whole output. It was never going to fill a showroom.
2
Still air
The desk zone is exactly as big as the still air around it
Evaporated oil drifts at the speed of the air it is in, and around a desk on a showroom floor that air is more or less still: the desk sits out of the main supply path, the person behind it is not moving much, and the scent accumulates into a zone a metre or two across. That zone is the reed's territory and within it the reed is fully effective - anyone at the desk smells the register clearly. It is also why a reed on the billing desk is such a good idea for a small studio, where the desk zone and the studio are nearly the same thing. The 500 sq ft studio page is that case, and the reed is its whole answer.
Rule: if the desk zone is most of your floor, the reed is the right product and this page is not about you.
3
Moving air
AC, door and demo units carry away whatever reaches the edge
Two metres from the desk the air belongs to the building. The AC supply pushes it, the return pulls it, the door exchanges it, a display air-conditioner on demo blows across its bay, a running chimney draws it up. A reed has no fan, no pump and no pressure, so it cannot push its output into any of that; whatever drifts to the edge of the desk zone is simply carried off, thinned to nothing. This is not a fault in the reed. It is the reason a floor needs a source that pushes and that is placed on the AC path, which is what the AC-placement page describes and what the Vaayu wall mount is for.

4
What more reeds and bigger bottles change
Strength and duration - never reach
Every lever on a reed adjusts the wrong axis. More reeds in the bottle: more evaporating surface, so a stronger desk zone and a bottle that empties sooner - the zone does not grow. A 130ml bottle: fourteen to eighteen weeks instead of six to eight - at the desk. Flipping the reeds: a burst at the desk for an hour. A second reed on a second desk: a second desk zone with unscented floor between them, and two registers if anyone chooses differently. A reed is a volume control for its zone, and the family pillar makes that the whole argument. Reach is the one thing none of these touches.
Rule: if you find yourself adding reeds to reach a display, stop. You are turning up the desk, and the display will still smell of nothing.
5
The floor
Distribution is a machine's job - one per volume of air
A floor needs a source that pushes, placed where the moving air will carry it. That is a machine, and it is one machine per volume of air: one Vaayu from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, high on the wall the AC supply crosses, reaching the return last; one Angaan on the plant past about 3,000 sq ft; and for a single closed room of 300-750 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 with the honest note that it is water-based and adds a little moisture in an electronics room. Between 750 and 1,500 sq ft a Vaayu is bought for control, no water and distribution, not for coverage, and the 1,000 sq ft page is that decision. The register stays the same as the reed's - a well-kept home, low, set for the advisor - and any live kitchen or coffee counter stays unscented.

The SOSA principle
A reed that can be smelt only at the billing desk has reached its desk and stopped, which is the whole of what a reed does; the floor was always a separate purchase.
Still air is a desk zone. Moving air is a machine's job. Keep the reed where it works and give the floor one source on the AC path.

The live kitchen or coffee counter
Nothing. Not a reed on the counter, not a machine's trace. The demonstration owns that air; extraction runs during and after.

The pillar for this whole family is my reed diffusers are too weak - what should I use instead, which makes the volume-versus-range argument in full; why fragrance is at reception and nowhere else is the same question asked about a machine that was parked at the desk; and the looks-premium page is what the floor should smell of once something is carrying it. SOSA makes no claim that any of this changes footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what fragrance does to any appliance or finish on display.

A note from Sonal

I get a version of this message most weeks, sometimes with a photograph of the reed and a request for a replacement. I always say the same thing: the reed is fine, and I can tell from the photograph, because it is on a desk and the desk is where you can smell it. A reed is six fibres in a bottle of oil, evaporating into whatever air is standing still around it. On a showroom floor the air standing still is the desk. Everywhere else the AC owns it, and a reed has nothing to push with.

What I want owners to take from this is that the reed did not fail at a job; it succeeded at a different one. If your showroom is a studio where the desk zone is most of the room, you have already bought the right thing, and the 500 sq ft page will tell you so. If your showroom is a floor, then the floor was always going to need a source that pushes, placed where the moving air carries it - and the family pillar is that argument at length.

So: keep the Mountain Breeze at the billing desk. For the floor, one Vaayu at ₹11,999 high on the supply wall, on a timer with the lock on, from about 1,500 sq ft; a Sukoon for one closed room, with the water said honestly; and any live kitchen or coffee counter left unscented. Fragrance is an interiors decision like lighting or music; SOSA makes no claim that it moves footfall, dwell time, conversion or sales, and no claim about what it does to any appliance on display. It is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Is a reed diffuser that only scents the billing desk area defective?
No. A reed evaporates oil from six fibre reeds into the still air around it, and still air on a showroom floor is a desk zone - a metre or two in each direction. Within that zone the reed is fully effective; beyond it the AC, the door and running display units move the air and carry away whatever drifts to the edge. The reed has no fan or pump to push against that. It stopped at the desk because that is the whole of what a reed does.
Will adding more reeds to the bottle carry the scent further across the showroom?
No. More reeds mean more evaporating surface, so the desk zone becomes stronger and the bottle empties sooner, but the zone does not grow, because reach is set by still air and not by output. A 130ml bottle lasts fourteen to eighteen weeks instead of six to eight, at the same desk. A second reed on a second desk gives two desk zones with unscented floor between them. A reed is a volume control for its zone, never a range control.
Why does the AC stop a reed diffuser reaching the display floor?
Because a reed's output is a slow drift that travels at the speed of the air it is in. Around a desk that air is roughly still, so the scent accumulates into a zone. Two metres out the air belongs to the AC supply and return, the door exchanging air each time it opens, and any display air-conditioner or chimney on demo, and the reed's drift is simply carried off and thinned to nothing. A machine that pushes a dry mist, placed on the supply wall, uses that same moving air to its advantage.
Should I keep the reed at the desk once I install a scent machine for the floor?
You can, provided it is the same register as the machine - Mountain Breeze at the desk with a cedar-sage register on the Vaayu, for instance - so the desk zone is a slightly stronger version of the floor rather than a second scent. Two different registers in one room make a third that nobody chose. If the desk sits inside the machine's coverage and the advisor there finds the combined level too much, remove the reed; the level is always set for the person who stands there all day.
What is the smallest machine that will reach beyond a single desk zone in a showroom?
For one closed room of about 300-750 sq ft, a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899 - ultrasonic, 16-18 hours on low, roughly 270-320 sq ft - with the honest note that it is water-based and adds a little moisture in a room full of electronics. For a connected floor from about 1,500 sq ft, one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999, waterless, mounted high on the wall the AC supply crosses. Between 750 and 1,500 sq ft a Vaayu is bought for control and no water, not for coverage.
