This is an awkward page for a company that sells reed diffusers, and it is one of the more useful ones we have written. The reason six bottles in a big foyer read as nothing is not that they are weak, or cheap, or wrongly chosen. It is that a reed's rate of release is fixed by something that has no relationship to the size of the room it is standing in.
Quick answers — read this first
Why are multiple reed diffusers usually not enough for a large restaurant foyer? Because the thing that sets a reed's output is the exposed surface area of its fibre, and that surface is the same whether the bottle stands in a washroom or an atrium. Six reeds above a neck evaporate at their own rate into the air immediately around them, and the room's own air movement decides everything after that. Adding bottles multiplies small local aureoles; it does not build a level across a volume, which is what a foyer actually needs.
What does that look like in cubic metres? Take a 600 sq ft foyer under a 3.4m soffit: 55.7 square metres of floor, so about 190 cubic metres of air. Suppose each bottle is meaningfully perceptible within a metre of itself, which is generous - that is roughly 2 cubic metres each, so six bottles are addressing something like 12 cubic metres out of 190. That is arithmetic rather than a measurement, but it is the right shape: under seven per cent of the room, in six separate pockets.
So when is a reed the right buy? In a volume it can actually fill. A washroom of about 35 sq ft is roughly 9 cubic metres, and a small foyer under 300 sq ft is under about 85 - those are bottle-sized rooms, and there a single Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is better than a machine: no power, no noise, nothing to set, and no off switch, which in an unsupervised washroom is a feature. Measure before you decide your foyer is large.
The short answer
Short answer: because a reed's output is set by the exposed surface area of its fibre, which does not change with the size of the room. Six bottles in a 600 sq ft foyer of about 190 cubic metres produce six local aureoles of perhaps a metre each - roughly 12 cubic metres of the 190, which is arithmetic rather than a measurement - and no level in between. A reed at ₹849 is the right buy under about 300 sq ft, and a genuinely large connected foyer needs a machine instead.
The pick: one Mountain Breeze reed (₹849 for 50ml, ₹1,349 for 130ml) per small volume - a washroom, a lobby, a foyer under about 300 sq ft - and a SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) or a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) where the volume is genuinely larger.
Next step: send the foyer's length, width and ceiling height and tell us how many bottles are in there now, and we will tell you the cubic volume and whether the honest answer is one bottle, one small machine or a machine of the larger class - Ask for a restaurant scenting plan.
The middle line is the one that decides it. A reed is a small source with a fixed rate, and a foyer is a large volume that needs a level - which is a mismatch of mechanism rather than of quality or of price.
The reed, and what it is actually for - tap for the specification
Why are multiple reed diffusers usually not enough for a large restaurant foyer?
Because a reed's rate of release is set by the exposed surface area of its fibre, and that surface has no relationship to the size of the room. Six reeds standing above the neck of a bottle wick oil up and evaporate it into the air immediately around them at a rate that is essentially fixed - it changes with temperature, with air movement and with how recently you flipped them, and not with whether the room is 9 cubic metres or 190. What you get is a small aureole around each bottle, and then the room's own air movement decides everything else. Put six of them around a large foyer and you have six of those aureoles, not one level. Here is the arithmetic, and I want to flag it as arithmetic rather than a measurement. A 600 sq ft foyer is 55.7 square metres; under a 3.4m soffit that is about 190 cubic metres of air. If each bottle is genuinely perceptible within a metre of itself - which is generous - each is addressing roughly 2 cubic metres, so six bottles are working on something like 12 of your 190. Under seven per cent of the room, in six separate pockets, with nothing in between them. A guest crossing that foyer meets a faint puff by the host desk, nothing for four metres, another puff by the console, and concludes the building smells of very little. Meanwhile six 50ml bottles at ₹849 is ₹5,094, and six 130ml at ₹1,349 is ₹8,094 - real money for a result that does not arrive. And bottle size does not rescue it: a reed is a volume control rather than a range control, so 130ml buys 14 to 18 weeks instead of 6 to 8. Months, not metres. So what is a reed for? A volume it can fill. A washroom of about 35 sq ft is roughly 9 cubic metres, a lobby or a small foyer under 300 sq ft is under about 85, and in those rooms one Mountain Breeze at ₹849 beats a machine outright: no power, no noise, nothing anybody can set wrongly, and no off switch, which in an unsupervised washroom is a feature. Above that, buy the right class of machine - a Sukoon at ₹1,899 up to about 750 sq ft, where a Vaayu would be the wrong buy, and a Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a connected envelope past about 1,500. But measure first, because most foyers I am told are large turn out to be 250 sq ft. One more refusal while we are here: whatever the format, Fresh Brew at ₹849 is ruled out by name at a restaurant door. The standing limits: this is an ambience decision like lighting, it is never a mask for cooking, grease or a drain, the dining room stays unscented, and your chef's judgement overrides this plan in their own room.Ask for a restaurant scenting plan and send the floor plan.
A reed's output is fixed by its exposed fibre surface, not by the room, so six bottles in a 190 cubic metre foyer give six small aureoles and no level. A reed at ₹849 is right for a washroom or a foyer under about 300 sq ft. Above that, buy one machine sized to the volume - and measure the foyer before assuming it is large.
One Mountain Breeze reed per small volume - six fibre reeds, alcohol-free and phthalate-free, 6 to 8 weeks from 50ml or 14 to 18 from 130ml, no power and nothing to set. ₹849 or ₹1,349. What it will not do is hold a level across a large foyer, and six of them will not either - that volume needs one machine.
One bottle for a small volume, and the machine to buy instead when the volume is large. We would rather lose five bottle sales and get the room right. The images link to the product pages so you can read the specification before ordering.
Pine, sage and cedar on an alcohol-free, phthalate-free, coconut-derived base with six fibre reeds, flipped weekly. 50ml ₹849 runs 6 to 8 weeks, 130ml ₹1,349 runs 14 to 18, refills 300ml ₹2,399 and 500ml ₹3,499. Continuous, silent, unpowered and impossible to switch off - a feature in a washroom, occasionally a fault in a foyer.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, 400ml running 90+ days a fill, app timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, key-lock, wall or HVAC mountable, ₹11,999. It holds a level across a connected envelope because it distributes rather than evaporates. Buy it for an envelope past about 1,500 sq ft, not for a 250 sq ft entrance.
Mountain Breeze: pine, sage and cedar, dry, mineral and deliberately inedible. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, coconut-derived CCT base, six fibre reeds, flipped weekly. 50ml ₹849 lasting 6 to 8 weeks, 130ml ₹1,349 lasting 14 to 18 weeks, refills 300ml ₹2,399 and 500ml ₹3,499. Reach is set by exposed fibre surface area, so a larger bottle buys months rather than metres and six bottles buy six aureoles rather than one level. Right for a single volume under about 300 sq ft. Fragrance oil is flammable, so keep the bottle away from a candle, a heater or a hand dryer.
Three limits, stated by the company that sells them, because knowing these three saves you from buying the sixth bottle and from buying the wrong machine afterwards.
1
It cannot fill a volume it has no way of reaching
Evaporation is local, and distribution is what a foyer needs
A reed evaporates into the air touching it and relies on the room to carry that further, which in a still foyer means barely at all and in a draughty one means straight out of the door. A machine works the other way round: it releases into the room as a fine, dispersed output and lets the volume even out. That is the whole difference, and it is a difference of mechanism rather than of strength. So in a 190 cubic metre foyer the question is never how many bottles - it is whether you need a source that distributes, and above about 300 sq ft you do.
Tip: Stand at the far corner of the foyer, not next to the console. That is where you find out what you have bought.
One Mountain Breeze reed diffuser ₹849, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
No timer, no intensity, no key-lock, and no way to turn it off for a private lunch
A reed has one setting, which is on. In a washroom that is exactly right - the room is never unattended and nobody can switch it off at nine in the evening. In a foyer it is occasionally a fault: a private lunch, a chef's event, a morning when the room should be completely neutral, and there is nothing to do but carry the bottle out. A machine gives you 1h/4h/8h/24h scheduling, an intensity you can write on a sheet, and a key-lock against a dozen staff hands. If either of those matters in your foyer, you are buying a machine whatever the bottle costs.
Tip: If a bottle has to be carried out of the room for certain services, it is in the wrong room.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Most foyers I am told are large measure 250 to 300 sq ft, which is 70 to 85 cubic metres and a one-bottle or one-Sukoon room rather than a machine-of-the-larger-class room. So take the tape out first: length by width in metres, multiplied by the real ceiling height, and watch for double height, because a 300 sq ft entrance under a 6m void is about 170 cubic metres and changes the answer on its own. Then buy once: one bottle under 300 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 up to about 750, and a machine of the larger class only for a connected envelope past about 1,500.
A reed's output is governed by the surface area of its fibre and not by the room it stands in, so adding bottles multiplies the number of small clouds in a foyer without ever producing a level across it.
Which is why the sixth bottle is the most expensive thing on this page and the least useful.
What the bottle is for: One Mountain Breeze reed per small volume - a washroom, a lobby, a foyer under about 300 sq ft. ₹849 for 50ml, ₹1,349 for 130ml.

The SOSA plan
Volume of air against the format that actually suits it
The volume of air
What to do
A washroom, about 9m³
One reed at ₹849, on the shelf, away from a hand dryer or a candle. Silent, unpowered and never off, which is what an unsupervised room wants. A machine here would be the wrong format.
A small foyer or lobby, under about 85m³
One reed, or a Sukoon if the room is at the top of that range and you want a level you can set. Not four bottles spread around the edges.
A foyer of 300 to 750 sq ft, roughly 85-210m³
One Sukoon at ₹1,899, placed upstream. Six reeds in this room is about ₹5,094 for six aureoles, and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy at the smaller end of this band.
A connected arrival envelope past about 1,500 sq ft
One Vaayu at ₹11,999, wall or duct mounted, running low on a service-hours timer. This is the volume where distribution rather than evaporation is the only thing that works.
A double-height or atrium arrival
Measure the height before anything else. A 300 sq ft entrance under a 6m void is about 170 cubic metres, so the format jumps a rung without a square foot being added.
The dining room, whatever its size
Nothing. No machine, no reed, no scented candle on a table, no exceptions - and no source positioned anywhere its output can reach a table.
We sell reed diffusers and I will still tell you that the sixth bottle in a large foyer is money spent on the feeling of having done something about it.

Where the bottle beats the machine
Small, unpowered, unsupervised and never switched off
Three products, mapped to cubic metres rather than to enthusiasm. If your volume is small the bottle is genuinely the better product and I will say so; if it is large, no number of bottles substitutes for one machine that distributes. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately, so the 4 × 100ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and continuity should be confirmed with SOSA in writing. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA restaurant specification
Format chosen by volume, with the reed's limit written in
One volume under about 300 sq ft - a washroom, a lobby, a small foyer
Pine, sage and cedar, six fibre reeds, flipped weekly. 50ml ₹849 for 6 to 8 weeks, 130ml ₹1,349 for 14 to 18. Reach is set by fibre surface, so one bottle per room and never six around one room
A foyer of roughly 300-750 sq ft, or about 85-210m³
270 to 320 sq ft of coverage with three 15ml fragrances, ₹1,899. A level you can set and record, at a fraction of what six large bottles cost, and at the lower end of this band a Vaayu would be the wrong buy
A connected arrival envelope past about 1,500 sq ft
1000m³, waterless, app timers, adjustable intensity, key-lock, under 38dB, wall or HVAC mountable. It distributes rather than evaporates, which is the only mechanism that holds a level across a large volume
Match the format to the cubic volume, buy one source per volume, and never buy a second bottle to solve a distance problem. Ambient scent here is an ambience decision like lighting; it is never a mask for cooking, grease, fish, smoke or a drain; and the dining room, the pass and the kitchen stay unscented, with no source placed where its output can reach a table. I will not describe any fragrance as food-safe or safe for use around food, because we have not tested for that and will not imply it, and anything sited near a food-preparation area is a question for your kitchen consultant and your local authority rather than for me. Fragrance oil is flammable, so bottles, oil and machine stay away from open flame and heat - table candles, flambé service, tandoors and ranges. And plainly: SOSA does not publish a business-outcome number because it has not measured one - no covers, no table turns, no spend per head. Ask for a restaurant scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
The message that produces this page usually says something like: we have six of your bottles in the entrance and guests still say it smells of nothing. And the honest reply is that the bottles are working exactly as designed and are in the wrong room. A reed wicks oil up six fibres and evaporates it into the air touching those fibres. That surface is the same in a washroom and in an atrium, which means the room has no influence on how much comes out, only on where it goes once it has.
So in a large foyer you end up with a set of small clouds, one per bottle, with clear air between them - and because a guest walks through rather than standing still, they get a faint impression near the console, nothing for four metres and a faint impression near the host desk. That reads as an unscented building with an odd moment in it. The instinct is then to buy a seventh bottle, or to buy the largest bottle we make, and neither helps, because the large bottle is a longer life rather than a longer reach. Months, not metres. I would rather publish that sentence than sell the seventh bottle.
On hardware, mapped to volume: a washroom or a small lobby is a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849, a citrus-mint washroom is a Morning Freshness reed at ₹749, a foyer of 300 to 750 sq ft is a Sukoon at ₹1,899, and a connected arrival envelope past about 1,500 sq ft is a Vaayu at ₹11,999. Measure the room before you choose, and nothing edible at the door in any case. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Why are multiple reed diffusers usually not enough for a large restaurant foyer?
Because a reed's output is set by the exposed surface area of its fibre, which is the same in any size of room. Six reeds evaporate into the air immediately around them, so six bottles give six local aureoles rather than one level. In a 600 sq ft foyer of about 190 cubic metres, six bottles perceptible within a metre each are addressing roughly 12 cubic metres of it. That is arithmetic rather than a measurement, but it is the right shape.
Will a bigger bottle cover a bigger room?
No. A reed is a volume control rather than a range control: 130ml at Rs 1,349 runs 14 to 18 weeks against 6 to 8 weeks from 50ml at Rs 849, and refills come at 300ml for Rs 2,399 and 500ml for Rs 3,499. What you buy with size is months of life, not metres of reach, because the evaporating surface is unchanged. If the room is too large for one bottle, it is too large for a larger bottle.
How big a room can one reed handle?
Roughly a single volume under about 300 sq ft, and it is at its best much smaller than that. A washroom of about 35 sq ft is around 9 cubic metres, which is a bottle-sized room where a reed beats a machine outright: no power, no noise, nothing to set wrongly and no off switch. Between about 300 and 750 sq ft the honest answer is a Sukoon at Rs 1,899, and past about 1,500 sq ft of connected envelope it is a Vaayu at Rs 11,999.
Is a machine always better than reeds?
No, and in two situations the reed is clearly better. Small volumes, where a machine's coverage is wasted and its dial is one more thing to be set wrongly. And rooms that must never be unattended, such as a washroom, where the fact that a reed cannot be switched off is the feature rather than the fault. Where the reed loses is any volume large enough to need distribution, and any foyer that has to be neutral for a private lunch.
What should go in a large restaurant foyer instead?
One machine sized to the cubic volume, placed upstream of the incoming air, low, out of the door's draught and never where its output can reach a table. Dry and deliberately inedible: cedar, pine and sage, green or herbal, dry tea, cool stone. Nothing gourmand, and our own Fresh Brew at Rs 849 is ruled out by name at a restaurant door, because coffee sends a guest looking for a dessert you do not serve.
What a genuinely large foyer needs: One machine that distributes: a Sukoon at ₹1,899 up to about 750 sq ft, or a Vaayu at ₹11,999 past about 1,500.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.
Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper extraction, grease management, drainage, cleaning and air change and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask or remove another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a guest's decision or any commercial outcome. Dining rooms, chef's tables, tasting-menu rooms and food-preparation areas are left unscented, no machine is placed where its output can reach a table or a pass, no fragrance is described as food-safe or safe for use around food, and the operator's own kitchen consultant and local food-safety and fire authority govern anything sited near a kitchen. Fragrance oil is flammable and is kept away from open flame and heat. The chef's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
