What AC actually does to bedroom air

An air conditioner has two jobs in your bedroom and only one of them is cooling. The first is pulling heat out of the room - that is the cooling part. The second, and the part most people forget, is pulling moisture out of the air. AC works by condensing water vapour on its cold evaporator coils and dripping it out through the drainage line. Every hour of AC operation removes 0.3 to 1.2 litres of water from your air, depending on the unit and the outside humidity.

This is a feature, not a bug. In Mumbai or Chennai in monsoon, dehumidification is exactly what you need - 80 percent humidity is miserable. But in Delhi, Hyderabad, Raipur or Bilaspur in May, the outside air is already low-humidity hot. Pull more moisture out and the indoor relative humidity drops below 40 percent. Below 35 percent, most people start reporting dry sinuses, scratchy throats, tight skin, and a vague sense of staleness even though the air is moving.

The staleness sensation is real. The brain reads low-humidity air as "old air" by default - it is one of the cues evolution wired in to push you toward fresh, oxygenated, plant-rich environments. An AC bedroom can feel sensorially old even when it is mechanically fresh. The thermometer says cool. The hygrometer says dry. The brain says stuffy.

Why a warm scent makes it worse

The scent does not freshen the room - it concentrates in the corners and stays heavy. I learned the AC bedroom problem the hard way in 2023 in Aurangabad. I had a beautiful warm sandalwood diffuser by the bed and I could not figure out why I was waking up with a heavy head every morning even though the AC was running and the room was 24 degrees. I assumed it was the sandalwood being too strong, swapped it for a lighter vanilla, and the heavy head got worse, not better.

It took an afternoon with a borrowed hygrometer to see the real problem - the room was at 32 percent humidity by 6am. The AC had wrung the air out overnight.
