Founder Diaries · Housewarming Gifting · Choosing the Product
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
This page is the routing table for our own shop, written for someone with an invitation and no particular loyalty to us. Four SOSA products make genuinely good new-home gifts. Four more sit at gifting prices and are the wrong purchase. And there is a branch — a real one, not a rhetorical one — where the correct answer is to buy nothing from SOSA at all and get the household something we do not sell. I would rather write all three of those down than have you find out by unwrapping.
Quick answers — read this first
The default: a 50ml reed diffuser, ₹749–₹849. A glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds that wick it into the room — no flame, no socket, no switch. It works while the household is out and it ends by itself in 6–8 weeks.

The upgrade that is not a bigger bottle: the Sukoon at ₹1,899, for a connected living-dining beyond roughly 250–300 sq ft. It covers 270–320 sq ft and includes three 15ml fragrances — but it needs a socket, a fill and somebody to switch it on.

The conditional gifts: jar candles ₹379, Sandalwood ₹449, candle two-pack ₹664 — excellent for a household that lights candles, inert in one that does not. Wax melts ₹474 need a burner they may not own.

Not gifts: the oil refill ₹2,399 (no vessel, no reeds), the water-based Hotel Collection from ₹299 (a refill for a machine), the Megh ₹3,499 and the Vaayu ₹11,999.
The short answer
Short answer: for most new homes, give a 50ml reed diffuser — Garden Bloom at ₹799 if you have not seen the flat, Mountain Breeze at ₹849 if somebody there dislikes scented things. For a couple with two rooms, a two-bottle duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598. For a household that lights candles nightly, a jar candle at ₹379. For a large open living-dining, the Sukoon at ₹1,899.
The branch people never see written down: if anyone in the household has said they dislike fragrance, if there is a newborn, if they have already told you what they need, or if what you actually want is to hand over a choice rather than an object — then no SOSA product is the right gift. We sell no gift card and no hamper, and there is no version of this page where I pretend otherwise.
Shop: reed diffusers ₹749–₹849 in 50ml and ₹1,249–₹1,349 in 130ml · duos ₹1,498–₹1,598 · Sukoon ₹1,899 · Boond ₹899 · candles ₹379–₹664 · mugs ₹474 · trinket dish ₹664. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
Which SOSA product should I gift for someone's new home?
1. Default to a 50ml reed diffuser unless something says otherwise. ₹749–₹849. It is the only thing we sell that asks nothing of a household still living out of cartons — no flame to supervise, no socket to find, no burner to own, no cupboard to make room in. It starts working the moment it is stood on a shelf and stops by itself after 6–8 weeks.

2. Choose the 130ml only for duration. ₹1,249–₹1,349, 14–18 weeks. At the same six reeds it projects like the 50ml. Bigger buys time, never reach — I would rather say that plainly than let anyone buy the larger bottle expecting a fuller room.

3. Choose a duo when there are two rooms and a close relationship. Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598. Two 50ml bottles in one purchase — not a hamper, not a curated set, because we sell neither.

4. Choose a candle only if you know they light candles. A jar at ₹379 gives roughly 15–18 hours, the Sandalwood jar is ₹449 and a two-pack is ₹664 for roughly 30–36 hours. Every one of those hours requires a person with a matchbox. In a household that does not light candles, they are a nice object and nothing more.

5. Choose the Sukoon for one specific situation. ₹1,899, covering 270–320 sq ft with a remote and steady, two-hour and four-hour timers, and three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances in the box. It is the right gift for a connected living-dining past roughly 250–300 sq ft, where reeds run out of format. It needs a socket, water, a fill and a decision to switch it on, so it is a different sort of gift rather than a superior one.

6. Rule out the four that are not gifts. The oil refill at ₹2,399 comes with no vessel and no reeds, so a household that has never owned a diffuser cannot use it. The water-based Hotel Collection at ₹299–₹1,799 is fragrance for a machine, never a standalone present. The Megh at ₹3,499 is a long-runtime and humidity machine covering only about 215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon — so it is never a coverage upgrade. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is commercial cold-air equipment and absurd in a flat.

7. Take the elsewhere branch when it applies. A fragrance-averse household, a newborn, a family who has told you what they need, or a giver who wants to hand over a choice rather than an object — in all four cases buy something we do not sell, with my blessing.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: reed diffuser ₹749–₹849 by default; duo ₹1,498–₹1,598 for two rooms; candle ₹379–₹664 only for candle-lighting households; Sukoon ₹1,899 for a big open living-dining. Refills, Hotel Collection, Megh and Vaayu are not housewarming gifts. Some households should be given something SOSA does not sell.
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser, the default new home gift
Route one, in its safest form
SOSA Garden Bloom · British rose & night-blooming jasmine ₹799 / 50ml
If you take one thing from this page, take this bottle. Rose over night-blooming jasmine, rounded rather than sweet, and the composition in our range that the fewest people hold a strong view about — which is exactly what you want for a home you have not been inside. A refillable glass bottle, six fibre reeds, alcohol-free and phthalate-free on a heat-stable CCT base tested through 45°C summers and 85% monsoon humidity. Six to eight weeks at 50ml; the 130ml is ₹1,299 and runs 14–18 weeks.

Part one — the three routes through the catalogue

Our shop looks bigger than it is for gifting purposes. Strip out everything that is a refill, a machine for a room nobody has, or a product that only makes sense to someone who already owns something else, and what remains is three routes: the thing that works by itself, the things that work if the household is a particular sort of household, and the machine that solves a size problem reeds cannot. Almost every good decision here is made by identifying which of the three the home is on before you look at a single product page.

1
ROUTE ONE · THE DEFAULT
The reed diffuser, and the three facts behind it
A reed diffuser is a glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds standing in it; the oil climbs the fibre by capillary action and evaporates off the exposed length into the room. Three consequences make it the default gift for a new home. It asks nothing — no flame, no socket, no switch, no burner, and the only upkeep is turning the reeds over weekly, which nobody is obliged to do. It works while they are out, which is not true of a candle and not true of a machine nobody has switched on. And it ends by itself at 6–8 weeks in 50ml or 14–18 in 130ml, leaving no clutter and no obligation in a flat where every surface is still being negotiated. Fibre reeds rather than rattan, incidentally, because rattan's natural pores clog in Indian humidity.
The rule: if nothing about the household argues otherwise, route one is the answer and the decision is only which scent.
2
ROUTE TWO · CONDITIONAL
Good products with a person-shaped condition attached
SOSA Cozy Corner scented jar candleCozy Corner₹379 · jar candleEverything below ₹749 on our store is a genuinely good object that requires a particular person to exist in the household. A jar candle at ₹379 — Misty Mornings, Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Evening Walks — needs somebody who lights candles, not somebody who means to. Roughly 15–18 hours each, or 30–36 across a ₹664 two-pack; the Sandalwood jar is ₹449. Wax melts at ₹474 need a burner the recipient may well not own, which makes them the riskiest thing on the list to give blind. The Everyday Beautiful mugs at ₹474, ribbed and face mugs at ₹569, and the cloud trinket dish at ₹664 carry no fragrance at all, which makes them the right route for a home where fragrance is not welcome. Prices in this band sometimes display with a .05 tail because of an automatic store discount; whole rupees throughout.
The tell: name the person the gift requires. If you cannot name them, you are on the wrong route.
3
ROUTE THREE · THE SIZE PROBLEM
One machine is a gift; three are not
Reeds have a ceiling and it is honest to state it: past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume, adding bottles stops being elegant and starts being a shelf of bottles. That is where the Sukoon at ₹1,899 earns its place — 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low from a 500ml tank, a remote, steady and two- and four-hour timers, and three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances in the box so it works on the evening it is unwrapped. The other machines are not housewarming gifts and I will not dress them up. The Boond at ₹899 is a charming small unit for about 150 sq ft with a colour night light — a lovely thing to own, a slightly odd thing to be given. The Megh at ₹3,499 holds six litres and runs about 100 hours but covers only around 215 sq ft, which is less than the Sukoon: it is a runtime and humidity machine, never a coverage upgrade, and anyone who tells you otherwise is reading the tank size. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is commercial cold-air equipment for hotels and showrooms.

Part two — the routing table

One fact about the home or the recipient, one route out. Find the row that matches what you know; if two rows match, take the higher one. The final row is not a rhetorical flourish — it is the row I send a real number of people to every month.

The routing table
What you know → what to give → what it costs → the condition
What is true of the home or the recipient Route The product Price The condition attached
You have not seen the flat and know nothing specific ★ One · the default Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 None — this is the route with no requirement attached
A couple, two rooms, close relationship One · doubled A two-bottle duo, 2 × 50ml ₹1,498–₹1,598 Two rooms must genuinely exist; in a studio the two scents meet at a seam
You want it still working when you visit in the winter One · larger Any scent in 130ml ₹1,249–₹1,349 Buys 14–18 weeks, not a fuller room — same six reeds, same projection
Somebody in the house lights a candle most evenings Two · conditional Jar candle or a two-pack ₹379–₹664 15–18 hours per jar, and every hour needs a person with a match
Fragrance is not welcome, or there is a newborn Two · unscented Mug or trinket dish ₹474–₹664 None — and it is the correct answer here, not a lesser one
A large open living-dining, past roughly 250–300 sq ft Three · the machine Sukoon, 270–320 sq ft ₹1,899 Needs a socket, water, a fill and somebody to switch it on
They already own two or three diffusers Off the map Nothing from the fragrance range — The gap in that home has moved; move with it
They have told you what they actually need Elsewhere The thing they told you — No gift on this page beats information you already have
The honest caveat: four SOSA products sit at gifting prices and belong on none of these routes. The oil refill at ₹2,399 for 300ml or ₹3,499 for 500ml is oil alone — no vessel, no reeds — so it is unusable by a household that does not already own a diffuser. The water-based Hotel Collection at ₹299, ₹999 and ₹1,799 is fragrance for an ultrasonic machine and never a standalone gift. The Megh at ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon — and is a runtime and humidity machine rather than a coverage upgrade. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 is commercial equipment. Reed oil never goes in a machine, Hotel Collection never goes in a reed bottle, and neither goes in a Vaayu.
Shop this guide
One product from each route
The SOSA principle
Every product below our reed range is excellent and requires a particular person to exist in that house.
Name the person before you buy. If you cannot name them — the one who lights candles, the one who owns a burner, the one who will switch the machine on — you are giving an object rather than a gift.

Part three — the branch where you should buy elsewhere

There are four situations in which the right answer is not on our store, and a routing page that omits them is not a routing page, it is an advertisement. The first is a household where fragrance is not welcome. If anyone there has said they dislike scented things, believe them: a reed diffuser cannot be turned down or switched off, which is its virtue everywhere else and its problem here. Same if there is a newborn in the house, or somebody who has told you fragrance bothers them. Our unscented ceramics are one honest answer and a gift from a completely different shop is an equally honest one. The second is a household that has told you what they need. Information beats inference every time; if they mentioned they have nowhere to put shoes, buy the shoe rack and ignore this entire page. I have never regretted taking somebody at their word.

The third is the one that costs us sales most often. If what you want to give is a choice rather than an object, we cannot help you. SOSA sells no gift card, no gift hamper, no gift box and no curated reed set — the duos at ₹1,498–₹1,598 are two bottles in one purchase and I describe them that way on purpose. Gift wrapping, gift notes, delivery by a particular date and shipping straight to a recipient are all unconfirmed; check what is offered at checkout rather than planning around them, and if a guaranteed delivery date is the thing your Sunday depends on, buy from somewhere that promises one. That is not false modesty. It is the difference between a shop you trust twice and a shop you trust once.

The fourth is about the home rather than the household. A brand-new flat smells of paint, polish, sealant and sometimes damp, and I want to be exact about this: fragrance does not remove any of that. It does not clean air, neutralise anything or shorten the process. What clears a new-build smell is ventilation and time — windows open, fans running, a few weeks. A diffuser given in week one sits alongside the paint until the paint fades, and then it is the pleasant thing left in the room. If the household is in the thick of that phase, say so when you hand the bottle over; it sets the expectation correctly and means the gift is judged on the right week. And whatever route you end up on, stand a diffuser on a tray, because the oil marks wood and stone, and keep it away from children and pets.

Four of our products are good new-home gifts, four are not, and one branch of this page ends at a different shop. All three of those facts belong on the same page.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — what each format asks of the person receiving it

The comparison that decides most of these routes is not price and not fragrance. It is what the object requires from a household in the month after a move, when nothing has a place yet and nobody has time. Read the second column first.

The format edit
Six formats, judged on what they demand
Format What it asks of them Works while they are out Ends by itself Price
Reed diffuser 50ml ★ Nothing — a flat surface, and a weekly flip if they feel like it Yes, continuously Yes — 6–8 weeks, then it is done ₹749–₹849
Reed diffuser 130ml The same, for longer Yes, continuously Yes — 14–18 weeks ₹1,249–₹1,349
Two-bottle duo Two flat surfaces in two different rooms Yes, in both rooms Yes — 6–8 weeks each ₹1,498–₹1,598
Jar candle Somebody who lights it, a safe surface and attention each time No — it only works when lit Yes — 15–18 hours per jar ₹379–₹664
Wax melts A burner they may not own, plus a tealight No Yes, if they ever start ₹474
Sukoon machine A socket, water, a fill and a decision to switch it on Only if left running on a timer No — it is a permanent object ₹1,899
Ceramic mug or dish Nothing, and it carries no fragrance at all Not applicable No — it is permanent, which in a small flat is a cost ₹474–₹664
Honest notes for buyers: the least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 and nothing below that price is a reed diffuser in any size. SOSA sells no gift card, no gift hamper, no gift box and no curated reed gift set; the duos are two-bottle products. Gift wrapping, gift notes, delivery dates, direct-to-recipient shipping and any bulk or corporate terms are unconfirmed — check at checkout. The water-based Hotel Collection at 15ml ₹299, 100ml ₹999 and 300ml ₹1,799 is a refill for an ultrasonic machine and is never a standalone gift; reed oil never goes into a machine and machine fragrance never goes into a reed bottle. The Megh at ₹3,499 covers roughly 215 sq ft, less than the Sukoon at ₹1,899, and is a runtime and humidity machine rather than a coverage upgrade. Our reed range has no oud, no musk-forward scent and no aquatic, and replacement reeds are not sold separately. No price is quoted anywhere on this page for a gift category outside the SOSA range. Free shipping above ₹499. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser with remote and timers
The one machine that is a gift
SOSA Sukoon · 500ml ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser ₹1,899
For a home whose living and dining run together past roughly 250–300 sq ft, this is the honest answer rather than a third bottle. It covers 270–320 sq ft, runs 16–18 hours on low from a 500ml fill, and comes with a remote and steady, two-hour and four-hour timers, plus three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances so it works the evening it is opened. Understand what you are giving, though: it needs a socket, water and somebody willing to switch it on. That makes it a different gift from a reed diffuser, not a bigger one — and note that the six-litre Megh at ₹3,499 covers less ground, not more.

A note from Sonal

The most useful thing a shop can tell you is what not to buy from it, and the reason is selfish as well as principled. A gift that lands wrong does not just fail once — it teaches the household something about the brand on the box. I would much rather send somebody to a shoe rack, a bookshop or a different store entirely than have one of our bottles become the thing in a new flat that nobody knows what to do with.

The four products I have ruled out on this page are the ones people most often ask me to bend on. The oil refill is our best value and completely unusable by someone who has never owned a diffuser. The Hotel Collection is lovely fragrance for a machine and a strange thing to unwrap on its own. The Megh has a six-litre tank and a smaller coverage figure than the Sukoon, which is counter-intuitive enough that people assume I have made a mistake. The Vaayu belongs in a hotel lobby. None of those facts is a marketing decision; they are just what the products are.

What I will say for route one is narrow and true. It is a glass bottle with six fibre reeds in it, it starts when it is put down, it works while the house is empty, and it finishes on its own. No claim about how it will be received, no promise about memory or mood — only that in a home still half in cartons, a gift that asks nothing is doing more than it looks like it is. Everything is made in Pune in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Which SOSA product is the best housewarming gift?
A 50ml reed diffuser at ₹749–₹849 for most homes — Garden Bloom ₹799 when you have not seen the flat. It is the only product we sell that asks nothing of the recipient: no flame, no socket, no burner, no cupboard. A two-bottle duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 for a couple with two rooms, and a jar candle at ₹379 only if you know somebody there lights candles.
Is the SOSA Sukoon a good housewarming gift?
For one situation, yes: a connected living-dining beyond roughly 250–300 sq ft, where reed diffusers run out of format. At ₹1,899 it covers 270–320 sq ft, runs 16–18 hours on low and includes three 15ml fragrances. But it needs a socket, water and someone to switch it on, so in a small flat, or for a household you suspect will never fill it, a reed diffuser is the better gift at less than half the price.
Can I gift the oil refill or the Hotel Collection fragrance?
Neither works as a gift for a new home. The refill at ₹2,399 for 300ml is oil only — no glass vessel, no reeds — so a household that has never owned a diffuser cannot use it. The water-based Hotel Collection at ₹299 to ₹1,799 is fragrance for an ultrasonic machine, not a present in itself. Give the bottle or the machine first; these are what the household buys later.
Is the Megh a bigger version of the Sukoon?
No, and it is the most common misreading in our range. The Megh at ₹3,499 has a six-litre tank and runs roughly 100 hours, but it covers only about 215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon's 270–320. It is a runtime and humidity machine, never a coverage upgrade, and it is not a housewarming gift.
Does SOSA sell a gift hamper, gift box or gift card for a new home?
None of them, and no curated reed gift set either. The nearest thing is a two-bottle duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 for 2 × 50ml or ₹2,498–₹2,598 for 2 × 130ml, which is exactly two reed diffusers in one purchase. Gift wrapping, gift notes, delivery dates and direct-to-recipient shipping are unconfirmed — check at checkout, and if a guaranteed date is what your plan depends on, buy where one is promised.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, routing the SOSA catalogue by household for new-home gifting, including the cases where no SOSA product is the right gift. Coverage and runtime figures for machines are manufacturer specifications and vary with room volume, ceiling height, ventilation and season. Reed diffuser durations are working guidance from in-house testing, not laboratory measurements. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean air, remove paint or cooking smells or change how anyone feels, and no claim is made about how a gift will be received.

SOSA range & prices used in this guide (verified from the live store, August 2026): Reed diffusers — alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant compositions on a heat-stable coconut-derived (CCT) carrier, supplied in a refillable glass bottle with six fibre reeds; 50ml lasts 6–8 weeks, 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks. Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 · 130ml ₹1,249; Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 · 130ml ₹1,299; Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 · 130ml ₹1,299; Fresh Brew 50ml ₹849 · 130ml ₹1,349; Mountain Breeze 50ml ₹849 · 130ml ₹1,349. Duo sets: Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 (2 × 50ml); ₹2,498–₹2,598 (2 × 130ml). Oil-only refills 300ml ₹2,399 · 500ml ₹3,499 (the glass vessel and reeds are not included). The least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749, so no reed diffuser exists below that price in any format. Below it SOSA sells scented candles from ₹379 (roughly 15–18 hours), a Sandalwood jar candle ₹449, wax melts ₹474, ceramic mugs ₹474, ribbed and face mugs ₹569, bubble and taper candles ₹474–₹569, a ceramic trinket dish ₹664 and candle duos ₹664 (roughly 30–36 hours). The store runs an automatic discount, so several prices display with a .05 tail (₹379.05, ₹474.05); whole rupees are quoted here. Machines: Boond 300ml ₹899 · Sukoon 500ml ₹1,899 · Megh 6L ₹3,499 · waterless Vaayu ₹11,999. The water-based Hotel Collection (15ml ₹299 · 100ml ₹999 · 300ml ₹1,799) is a fragrance for an ultrasonic machine and is not a standalone gift. SOSA does not sell a gift card, a gift hamper, a gift box or a curated reed gift set, and gift wrapping, gift notes, direct-to-recipient shipping and any bulk or corporate terms are unconfirmed — check at checkout or with SOSA rather than assuming them.
