Founder Diaries · Diwali Gifting · The Next Rung
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
There are four things in our catalogue that sensibly follow a first reed diffuser, and they are not a price ladder you climb in order. They are four answers to four different findings, and the finding comes from having been inside the house. An empty bottle with the reeds still in it means one thing. A bottle that has been carried between two rooms means another. A flat where the living room opens into the dining and out onto a balcony means the format has run out of room and the answer is not another bottle at all. This page sets the rungs out in order, tells you which observation unlocks each one, and says plainly which rung most people should stop at — because the commonest mistake in repeat gifting is climbing when the evidence said stay.
Quick answers — read this first
Rung one — the 300ml oil refill, ₹2,399: when the bottle is finished and still on the shelf with its reeds. Roughly 8–11 months of oil at about ₹7–8 per ml. Best value we sell, plainest thing to unwrap.

Rung two — a second 50ml in a different scent, ₹749–₹849: when one bottle is doing one room and the rest of the home has nothing. This is where most people should stop.

Rung three — a duo, ₹1,498–₹1,598: when two rooms both want one, or the bottle keeps getting moved.

Rung four — the Sukoon, ₹1,899: when the space is past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume, or what they actually want is scent on demand rather than a constant. Different format, needs a socket, water-based fragrance only.
The short answer
Short answer: a second 50ml in a different scent, at ₹749–₹849, is the right follow-up in most homes. Move off that only on evidence — an empty bottle still in service points to the refill at ₹2,399, two competing rooms point to a duo at ₹1,498, and a large connected living space points to the Sukoon at ₹1,899.
How the format sets the ceiling: a reed diffuser is a glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds; oil climbs the fibre and evaporates into the room, with no fan and no heat behind it. Output per bottle is fixed, so a bigger bottle buys weeks and not reach. Past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume, reeds are the wrong tool, and a machine that pushes mist is the honest answer rather than a third bottle.
Straight answer
Which SOSA product should you gift after you have already given someone a reed diffuser?
1. Rung two, a second 50ml in a different scent, unless the evidence says otherwise. Evening Calm ₹799, Garden Bloom ₹799 or Mountain Breeze ₹849. It is the same money as last year, it lands in a room the first bottle never reached, and it does not commit anyone to a new format.

2. Rung one is the refill, and it is evidence-only. The 300ml at ₹2,399 runs roughly 8–11 months at about ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 per ml on a 50ml bottle. It is oil only — no glass vessel, no reeds — so it works only if they still have the bottle and reeds, which means you need to have seen them.

3. Rung three is a duo, for a home that has been carrying one bottle around. Day & Night ₹1,498, Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598. Two 50ml bottles composed to share air without a seam. It is a two-bottle product, not a hamper or a gift set — SOSA sells neither.

4. Rung four is the Sukoon at ₹1,899, and it is a change of format rather than a bigger version of anything. 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, remote and timers, three 15ml water-based fragrances in the box. It needs a socket and it needs switching on. Reed oil never goes into it, and its water-based fragrance never goes into a reed bottle.

5. The Megh at ₹3,499 is not the rung above the Sukoon. Its 6L tank buys about 100 hours of runtime and it covers roughly 215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon. It is a runtime and humidity machine, and I would rather say that than sell it as a coverage upgrade.

6. If you cannot find the first bottle, do not climb at all. A gift that was never used is information. Step sideways — a jar candle ₹379, an Everyday Beautiful Mug ₹474, the Cloud trinket dish ₹664 — or give something outside the category entirely.

7. Whatever the rung, it is a gift for the fortnight after Diwali. A festival house is already at the top of its fragrance range, and none of these products cuts through diya smoke, incense or a kitchen running all week. Fragrance oil is flammable, so keep any bottle well away from open flame.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: four rungs, chosen on evidence. Empty bottle still in service → refill ₹2,399. One room covered, others bare → second 50ml ₹749–₹849, and most people stop here. Bottle being carried between rooms → duo ₹1,498–₹1,598. A large connected living space → Sukoon ₹1,899. Bottle nowhere to be seen → stop.
SOSA reed diffuser oil refill 300ml, the first rung after a first bottle
Rung one — the best value, the plainest parcel
SOSA reed diffuser oil refill ₹2,399 / 300ml
Roughly 8–11 months of oil, at about ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 per ml on a 50ml bottle — up to around 55% less per ml, which makes it the best value in our catalogue by a distance. The conditions attached to it are real, though. It is oil only: no glass vessel and no reeds, and replacement reeds are not sold separately at all, which is an honest gap in the range rather than a detail. It works when they still have the bottle and the reeds are in reasonable condition; our guidance is to refresh reeds every few months. And it is a plain thing to hand over, so it suits people you see privately rather than a room of relatives watching. 500ml is ₹3,499 and runs 14–18 months.

Part one — what to look at when you are in the house

This whole page depends on one advantage you have that no product quiz can give you: you have been in the room. Five minutes of noticing, on a visit you were making anyway, settles a decision that otherwise gets made at midnight against a product grid. Here is what to look at, and what each thing means.

1
THE FIRST LOOK · IS IT THERE, AND IS IT EMPTY
A finished bottle still standing on a shelf is the clearest signal in gifting
SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuser, the second rung after a first bottleEvening Calm₹799 · 50mlPeople throw away things they did not like. A bottle that has been run down to nothing and is still in position, reeds standing in it, is somebody keeping a thing they intend to continue. That is the one observation that makes the refill the right gift rather than a dull one. If instead the bottle is half full and has clearly not moved in months, that is not enthusiasm, and the answer is a different scent rather than more of the same one. And if you cannot find it at all, take that seriously: some households simply do not want fragrance and are perfectly warm about receiving it.
The tell: empty and still there means continue. Half full and dusty means change. Absent means stop.
2
THE SECOND LOOK · WHERE IT STANDS
One room served, or one bottle being carried around
A bottle in a fixed spot with the rest of the flat bare points at rung two: a second 50ml, a different scent, for the room that has nothing. A bottle that has visibly migrated — it was on the console in March and it is by the bed now — points at rung three, because somebody is rationing one source between two places they both want covered. That is exactly what a duo is for. Also look at where it is standing. Directly under a fan, in a window, in full sun or beside an air-conditioner means the reeds are being stripped, the room smells of little and the bottle is emptying weeks early. That is not a reason to buy anything; it is a reason to say, lightly, that it does better away from the draught.
3
THE THIRD LOOK · THE SHAPE OF THE SPACE
Where the format itself runs out
Stand in the main room and see how far the air actually travels. A living room that opens into a dining area, which opens onto a balcony, with no doors between them, is one connected volume — and past roughly 250–300 sq ft of that, a passive source with no fan behind it is simply outmatched. Adding a third bottle to a space like that is the version of this problem I would rather you did not spend money on. The honest answer is the Sukoon at ₹1,899: 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, a remote and steady, two-hour and four-hour timers, and three 15ml water-based Hotel Collection fragrances in the box. Most homes that end up here run both formats — reeds in the quiet rooms, a machine in the big one.
The other trigger: if what they want is scent on demand — on for guests, off at night — no reed diffuser does that. Reeds are constant by design.

Part two — the observation that unlocks each rung

Read down the first column until you find the thing you actually saw. The last column matters as much as the third: at each rung there is a plausible purchase that is wrong, and it is usually the more expensive one.

Evidence to product
What you saw in their home, and the rung it points to
What you saw What it tells you Rung The product What not to buy instead
Empty bottle, reeds still in it, still on the shelf ★ They kept it deliberately and want to continue One 300ml oil refill ₹2,399 A whole new bottle — they already own the glass
One bottle in the living room, bedroom and study bare One room is served and the home is not Two A second 50ml, different scent, ₹749–₹849 The 130ml of the same scent — that is weeks, not reach
The bottle has moved rooms since you last visited Two rooms want it and there is only one Three A duo, ₹1,498–₹1,598 A machine — the problem is sources, not power
Living, dining and balcony are one open volume The space is past what a passive source can serve Four Sukoon ₹1,899, 270–320 sq ft The Megh ₹3,499 — about 215 sq ft, not a coverage upgrade
They said it was lovely but they wanted it "on" for guests They want control, and reeds are constant by design Four Sukoon ₹1,899 or Boond ₹899 for a small room A stronger scent — strength was never the issue
A toddler or a cat, and the bottle up on a high shelf The format is being worked around rather than enjoyed Sideways Mug ₹474 or the Cloud dish ₹664 Anything with a flame, and anything else to keep out of reach
You could not find the bottle anywhere It did not land, and that is allowed None Something outside the category entirely A better fragrance — the category is the problem
The honest caveat: if you have not been to the house since you gave the first bottle, you have no evidence and this table is not for you. Buy rung two blind — a different 50ml scent, ₹749–₹849 — and let them place it. Guessing at a machine for a home you have not seen is how a ₹1,899 gift ends up in a cupboard, and the Sukoon needs a socket, a surface and someone willing to switch it on.
Shop this guide
Rung two, rung three, rung four
The SOSA principle
The rungs are a diagnosis, not a price ladder. Most homes are correctly answered by the second one.
Climbing without evidence is how a ₹799 decision turns into a ₹1,899 object nobody switches on.

Part three — when to stop climbing

The ladder has a top, and it is closer than a catalogue would like it to be. Two bottles serve most Indian flats completely, and a third rarely earns its place: what you get is not more fragrance in the home so much as a third small thing to flip weekly, keep out of the sun and stand on a tray. Where a home genuinely has a large connected volume, or where somebody wants fragrance they can switch on for guests and off at bedtime, the honest step is across to a machine rather than further along the reed range — and I would rather lose the sale of a third bottle and be right about that. Note also which machine. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 covers 270–320 sq ft; the Megh at ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft and exists for its 6L tank and roughly 100 hours of runtime. Paying ₹3,499 − ₹1,899 = ₹1,600 more for less coverage is a reasonable decision if you want runtime; it is a poor one if you wanted reach, and the price makes it look like the opposite.

The second stopping point is the household rather than the room. A home with a toddler who is at the exact height of a console table, or a cat that walks along shelves, is a home where the bottle has to live somewhere inconvenient — and if you noticed it perched high up and out of the way, the format is being tolerated rather than enjoyed. That is a good year to step sideways rather than up: an Everyday Beautiful Mug at ₹474, the Cloud trinket dish at ₹664, or nothing from this category at all. Candles have the same conversation attached, only more so: a jar candle at ₹379 gives roughly 15–18 hours and needs a household that lights candles and watches them, and wax melts at ₹474 need a burner the recipient may not own at all.

And there is the case where the answer is no further rung of any kind. If the first bottle was never used, buying a better fragrance is answering a question nobody asked; the category is what did not fit. People are perfectly capable of being pleased to receive something they will never take out of the box, and that politeness is not an invitation to try again with a bigger version. Change category, or hand over something small and unloaded and let it go. Two last things that apply to every rung here. A Diwali home is already running at the top of its fragrance range — diyas, incense, flowers, a kitchen going all week — and nothing on this page cuts through that, masks it or removes it; what you are giving is the fortnight after. And because this is the festival of lamps: fragrance oil is flammable, so the bottle belongs away from diyas and candles, on a tray, out of direct sun and out of reach of children and pets.

An empty bottle that is still on the shelf tells you more than any conversation about it would. People throw away what they did not like.

Part four — the four rungs compared honestly

Each rung has something it is genuinely good at and something it is bad at, and the bad part is the half that gets left out of most product pages. This is both halves.

The ladder, with its flaws
What each rung does well, and where it disappoints
Rung Price What it is genuinely good at Where it disappoints
Two — a second 50ml, different scent ★ ₹749–₹849 Adds a source to a room that had none; costs what last year cost Nothing, if the rooms share air and the scents share no note
One — 300ml oil refill ₹2,399 8–11 months of oil at roughly ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 Oil only, no vessel, no reeds — and a very plain parcel to open
Three — a duo set ₹1,498–₹1,598 Two rooms at once, with two scents chosen to share a note It is two bottles in a box — no wrap, no hamper, no curation
Four — Sukoon ₹1,899 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hrs on low, timers, three 15ml scents included Needs a socket and switching on; reed oil must never go in it
A small-room machine — Boond ₹899 ~150 sq ft, ~6 hrs a fill, USB, a colour night light Small tank and short run; fragrance sold separately from ₹299
Sideways — candle, mug or dish ₹379–₹664 Complete objects; nothing else has to be bought for a candle to work A candle needs someone who lights candles; wax melts ₹474 need a burner
No rung at all — Costs nothing and is right more often than anyone admits Requires you to accept that a gift you chose did not land
Honest notes for buyers: the least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 and nothing below that price is a reed diffuser in any size. A 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml but projects the same at six reeds — duration, never strength — and any strength position we publish is a place on SOSA's own internal scale, not an industry standard. Replacement reeds are not sold separately; guidance is to refresh reeds every few months, and a refill is oil only. Reed oil never goes into a machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle; neither goes into a Vaayu ₹11,999, which is a commercial cold-air machine and absurd in a flat. The Megh ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft and is a runtime and humidity machine, never a coverage upgrade over the Sukoon. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity and no lead time, and sells no gift card, gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set — larger orders go through the contact page, and no delivery timing is promised here. Fragrance oil is flammable: keep bottles away from diyas, candles and open flame, on a tray, out of reach of children and pets. Fragrance adds scent to a room; it does not clean air or remove cooking or smoke smells. Free shipping above ₹499; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Sukoon ultrasonic cool mist diffuser, the top rung after a reed diffuser
Rung four — a change of format, not a bigger bottle
SOSA Sukoon · 500ml ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser ₹1,899
This is where the reed format honestly stops. 270–320 sq ft of coverage, 16–18 hours on low from one fill, a remote, and steady, two-hour and four-hour timers — which between them answer the two things reeds cannot do: serve a large connected room, and be switched on and off. Three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances come in the box, and further fragrance is 15ml ₹299, 100ml ₹999 or 300ml ₹1,799. It is water-based and it takes only that: reed diffuser oil must never go into it. For a small bedroom the Boond at ₹899 covers about 150 sq ft for around six hours a fill.

A note from Sonal

Every catalogue wants a ladder, because a ladder is how a first purchase turns into a second and a third. Ours has one, and I have spent a lot of this page telling you where it stops. The reason is that the second rung answers the majority of homes correctly and costs about what the first one did, and a shop that pushed everyone past it would be selling machines to people whose flats do not need machines.

What genuinely interests me about repeat gifting is that it is the only kind where you get feedback. You gave the first bottle blind. Then you went to the house for a wedding or a birthday, and without meaning to, you learned everything: where it stands, whether it is finished, whether the reeds have ever been flipped, whether there is a fan blowing straight across it. Nobody in this business gets better data than that.

I would rather you used it to buy less than more. If the bottle was empty and still standing there, send the refill and be pleased with yourself. If one room is covered and three are not, send another 50ml. Only go to a machine when the space or the switch is genuinely the problem — and if you could not find the first bottle at all, take the hint and give something else this year, with no hard feelings on either side. Everything is made in Pune in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Is a refill a good Diwali gift, or too plain?
Both, honestly. 300ml at ₹2,399 is roughly 8–11 months of oil at about ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 per ml at 50ml, which makes it the best value we sell. It is also oil in a bottle with no vessel and no reeds, so it opens plainly. Give it where the handover is private and the recipient still has last year's bottle; give a second 50ml where it will be opened in front of people.
Should I give a 130ml as the second gift?
Only if they told you the first one ran out and they missed it. A 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 lasts 14–18 weeks against 6–8, which is genuine value per week, but it carries the same six reeds and projects exactly as far into the same room. It is duration, not strength, and as a repeat gift it reads as more of the same because it is.
Is the Megh a step up from the Sukoon?
No, and the prices make it look as though it should be. The Megh at ₹3,499 has a 6L tank and runs roughly 100 hours, but it covers about 215 sq ft — less than the Sukoon's 270–320 sq ft at ₹1,899. It is a runtime and humidity machine. Buy it for long unattended running, never for reach.
Can I put the reed oil refill into a machine, or machine fragrance into a reed bottle?
No, in both directions. The reed line is oil on a heat-stable CCT carrier; the Hotel Collection is water-based fragrance made for an ultrasonic tank. They are not interchangeable, and neither belongs in a waterless Vaayu. If you are gifting a machine, the fragrance for it is 15ml ₹299, 100ml ₹999 or 300ml ₹1,799 — and on its own, a 15ml is a refill rather than a gift.
What if they have two bottles already and the home is small?
Then the ladder is finished and I would say so. Two bottles serve most Indian flats completely, and a third mainly adds another thing to flip weekly and keep out of the sun. Step sideways for a year — a jar candle ₹379, an Everyday Beautiful Mug ₹474, the Cloud trinket dish ₹664 — or give something from outside this category entirely.
