This is the decision page for the whole family, so it is short on theory and long on names. Four attars go in, three come out, and the reasoning for each exclusion is printed rather than implied. If you have read the other pages here, this is where they land.
Quick answers — read this first
Which SOSA attar is it, and in what size?Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379. Its five published notes are bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk alone in the base. There is no resin, no amber, no aged tobacco, no leather and no oud anywhere in it, and it is the shortest composition and the lightest base of SOSA's four attars. Buy the 3ml and nothing bigger: SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the 3ml is the sample size. The 6ml is ₹669 and the 12ml ₹1,149 once you know it is yours.
What has been ruled out to get there, by name?Nawaab - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber - the heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin and the smoky one. Mastani, for oudh, vanilla and tonka under two florals. Ameeri, which is lighter and not smoky but still carries sandalwood and a soft oudh. On the SOSA perfume line, Tabac Noir is a tobacco-vanilla and Zaffran a saffron sweet-amber. And the Pack of 3 at ₹1,055, which is the three heaviest attars with no Adaa in it.
What is the one rule to remember afterwards? The opposite of heavy is short, not fresh. Fresh is a marketing word that tells you about a top note; weight is decided by the base, which is the part you wear for most of the day. So read the last two notes on any listing first. If either is a resin, an amber, an oud or a heavy wood, the composition will consolidate on you rather than fade, whatever the opening promised. If it is a musk, it will thin out. That one habit will save you more money than any recommendation on this page, including mine.
The short answer
Short answer: SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379. It publishes five notes - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - with the musk alone in the base and no resin, amber, tobacco, leather or oud anywhere in it, which makes it the shortest composition and the lightest base of SOSA's four attars. Ruled out by name to get there: Nawaab for its aged tobacco, leather and amber; Mastani for its oudh, vanilla and tonka; Ameeri for its sandalwood and soft oudh; Tabac Noir and Zaffran on the perfume line; and the Pack of 3, which is the three heaviest attars and excludes Adaa.
The pick: the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 - five published notes with white musk alone in the base, alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, and it wears 6-8 hours. If you want a spray rather than an oil, SOSA Khayaal at ₹599 for 10ml is a sparkling bergamot and neroli and SOSA Samundar at ₹599 for 10ml is an aquatic marine, both on the SOSA perfume line, named by accord only and with no published note lists.
Next step: send me the three heaviest perfumes you have owned and I will read their bases back to you, so that the next time you are on a listing you can do the ruling out without me - Ask for an attar recommendation.
Two of the five lines are exclusions and one of them is our most expensive attar. That is what a decision page is for: the ruling out is the service, and it is cheaper to read than to discover.
SOSA Adaa - the bottle this whole family lands on, in its smallest size
Which SOSA attar should somebody buy if they want the opposite of smoky, dark and heavy?
SOSA Adaa, the 3ml, at ₹379. That is the whole answer, and the rest of this paragraph is the elimination that produced it, printed rather than implied, because the ruling out is the part you can use elsewhere. SOSA makes exactly four attars: Adaa, Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab. Nawaab goes first - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. It is the most expensive raw-material attar in the line and the heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin, and it is the range's smoky one, because the tobacco and leather are exactly what produce a smoky reading. Mastani goes next: night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka, which is a crowded base whatever you think of the florals. Ameeri goes third, and this is the one worth a sentence: Taif rose, real Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and a soft oudh, with no tobacco and no leather in it. It is not the smoky one, and on a narrower brief it would still be in play. But it carries sandalwood and an oud, so on a brief this strict it is out. On the SOSA perfume line, Tabac Noir is a tobacco-vanilla and Zaffran is a saffron sweet-amber, and both are named here so you can avoid them rather than find them. The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - the three heaviest, with no Adaa in it - so it is the single worst first purchase for a reader in your position. What stands is Adaa: five published notes, bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk alone in the base. No resin, no amber, no tobacco, no leather, no oud. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, phthalate-free, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, hand-blended in Pune, and it wears 6-8 hours - the only longevity figure SOSA publishes, and published for the attars alone. Two honest gaps while I am here. There is no resin-led or incense-led skin fragrance anywhere in the SOSA range, which happens to suit you; and there is no oud-free woody attar either, which may not. Now the rule worth keeping: the opposite of heavy is short, not fresh. Read the last two notes on any listing before the first two, because the base is the afternoon. Three disclosures. Adaa carries jasmine sambac in a supporting role, and if jasmine is also out for you then none of the four is your bottle and I would rather say so. The perfume line publishes an accord and no note list, and no wear figure at all, so stay with the attars if you need certainty. And SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health claim of any kind - if a heavy fragrance affects you physically, this page can only answer on dose and structure and the rest is a doctor's question.Ask for an attar recommendation and send me your three worst bottles.
One bottle: Adaa, 3ml, ₹379. Five published notes with white musk alone in the base, and no resin, amber, tobacco, leather or oud. Nawaab, Mastani, Ameeri, Tabac Noir, Zaffran and the Pack of 3 are all ruled out on this page by name, and the rule to keep is that the opposite of heavy is short rather than fresh.
The bottle is one SOSA Adaa - bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk alone underneath. Five published notes in total, and no resin, amber, tobacco, leather or oud. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size.
One attar and one honest alternative if an oil is not the format you want. Both cards link to the live listing, because the note list is what you should be deciding on.
Five published notes: bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk alone in the base. No resin, no amber, no aged tobacco, no leather, no oud. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, phthalate-free, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size.
Not an attar. This is the SOSA perfume line, referred to by SOSA name and accord only: a sparkling bergamot and neroli. No note list and no wear figure is published for it, so if you want to confirm there is no resin or oud in a bottle before buying, stay with the attars, where every note is published. ₹599 for 10ml.
3ml, 6ml and 12ml at ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149. Published notes: bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - five in total, with the musk alone in the base. An alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers, phthalate-free, made to IFRA standards, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune. It wears 6-8 hours, the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Positioned for office hours and daytime weddings. No oud, no vanilla, no rose, no resin.
Three passes through the range, in the order I would make them. Each pass removes something, and the last one leaves one bottle.
1
First pass: remove the smoke
One of the four attars contains a smoke material, and it is named rather than hinted at
Smoke in perfumery is an effect built from specific materials - aged tobacco, leather, birch tar, cade - and only one SOSA attar carries any of them. Nawaab has aged tobacco and leather, so Nawaab is the smoky one and it goes first. That is not because it contains oud: oud is a wood and it reads however its neighbours tell it to, which is why Ameeri's soft oudh beside rose and sandalwood is not smoky at all. Getting that distinction right is what stops a reader ruling out three bottles when they only needed to rule out one. Here, though, the brief says dark and heavy as well, so the other passes still have work to do.
Tip: Search any listing for tobacco, leather, birch tar and cade. Those four words are where smoke actually lives.
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
Dark and heavy are the same measurement, and the measurement is how much sits low
Read the last third of a note list, because that is the base and the base is the afternoon. Count the materials there and weigh each one. Mastani has oudh, vanilla and tonka down there, so it goes. Ameeri has sandalwood and a soft oudh, which is less but is not nothing, so it goes too on a brief this strict. Nawaab had oud, leather and amber, which is why it was already gone. Adaa has one material in its base, white musk, which makes it the lightest base SOSA builds for skin. Note that this is a count rather than a judgement about any individual material: the weight is in the number.
Tip: One or two base materials and a composition thins out. Four and it consolidates instead.
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
One bottle standing, and it still carries something you might not want
Adaa is what the two passes leave, and there is one thing in it worth stating plainly for the third time on this page: jasmine sambac, in the heart, in a supporting role rather than as the subject of the composition. If florals are also out for you then no SOSA attar fits, because Adaa has jasmine, Ameeri has rose, Mastani has both and Nawaab is the only floral-free one and it is the smoky one. That is the arithmetic of a four-attar range and I would rather print it than let you find it. If it rules us out, look at the perfume line or buy nothing yet. Both are better outcomes than a 12ml you will not wear.
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
The opposite of smoky, dark and heavy is not a fresh perfume but a short one, with almost nothing holding its base down.
Fresh describes a top note and tells you nothing about the afternoon; the base is the part you actually live with, and it is the last two lines of any note list.
The one bottle, in the one size: SOSA Adaa, five published notes with white musk alone in the base, at ₹379 for the 3ml - the sample size, because SOSA sells no sampler.
If you take one thing from this family, take the table below. It is the whole method in six lines and it works on any brand's listing.
The SOSA shortlist
The exclusions in order, and what each one removes
The step
What to do
Look for a smoke material
Aged tobacco, leather, birch tar or cade. Only Nawaab carries any of them, so Nawaab is out - and note that oud on its own is not a smoke material.
Count the base materials
One or two and the composition thins as it dries; four and it consolidates. Mastani and Ameeri go here, and Adaa's base is a single white musk.
Look for a resin or an amber
Frankincense, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin, opoponax, amber. Nothing in SOSA's four attars is resin-led, and there is no incense-led skin fragrance in the range at all.
Count the total notes
Five is a short formula. Ten or twelve was built for depth. Adaa publishes five; Nawaab publishes six substantial ones.
Check the disclosures
Adaa has jasmine sambac, Ameeri has rose and oudh, Mastani has both plus vanilla and tonka, Nawaab has oud, tobacco and leather. All four lists are published.
Then buy the smallest size
One 3ml of one attar at ₹379 to ₹399. SOSA sells no sampler and no discovery set, and the Pack of 3 is three full-size heavy attars without Adaa.
The two pages this decision rests on are worth reading if any of the exclusions above surprised you. I don't want my attar to smell smoky separates smoke from oud, which is the distinction that keeps Ameeri in play on a narrower brief, and which attar to buy if resinous fragrances feel too heavy turns weight into something you can count off a listing instead of guess at. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and every attar named here is its own composition.
The purchase to avoid outright: The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, the three heaviest attars SOSA makes, and it contains no Adaa at all.
SOSA makes exactly four attars, three of which contain oud and only one of which - Adaa - does not. On a brief as strict as this one, three of the four come off the list, so the table below carries the attar answer plus the two perfume-line products that are the honest route if an oil is not what you want. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA attar specification
One attar, and two honest alternatives if an oil is not the format
Five published notes with white musk alone in the base, and no resin, amber, tobacco, leather or oud. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, wears 6-8 hours. Buy the 3ml at ₹379
A sparkling bergamot and neroli on the SOSA perfume line, named by SOSA name and accord only. No note list and no wear figure is published for it, and it is not an attar
A reader who wants the least dense thing SOSA makes
An aquatic marine on the SOSA perfume line, accord only again, with no published note list and no published wear figure. Structurally the furthest thing from a resinous base
Everything on this page comes down to one habit: read the last two notes on a listing before the first two, because the base is the part you live with. SOSA makes exactly four attars, and Nawaab and Tabac Noir are ruled out on this page by name, along with Mastani, Ameeri, Zaffran and the Pack of 3, which is the three heaviest attars and excludes Adaa. There is no resin-led or incense-led skin fragrance anywhere in the SOSA range, and no oud-free woody attar either - both genuine gaps rather than omissions. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing is published for the perfume line or the solid body perfumes, and no note list is published for the solids at all, which is why this page never says how one smells. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only other promise here. Ask for an attar recommendation before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
By the time somebody reaches this page they have usually stopped asking what they should like and started listing what they will not have. Smoky, dark, heavy. I get the three words together often enough that I keep a note of them, and the letters nearly always come with a story: a bottle bought on somebody's recommendation, worn twice, now at the back of a shelf. Nothing in that story needs correcting. Incense and loban and the itr tradition our attars come out of all carry real weight in this country, and none of that obliges you to wear them.
What I can add is the mechanics, and they are simpler than the category lets on. Smoke is made from specific materials - aged tobacco, leather, birch tar, cade - and only one of our four attars carries any of them. Darkness and heaviness are the same measurement twice: how much material is sitting in the base, which is the slow layer you wear for most of the day. Count what is down there, weigh each piece, and you have measured the thing you have been reacting to for years. It is not a note you have to learn to recognise. It is a number you can read off a list in ten seconds.
So the answer is one bottle at its smallest size: Adaa, ₹379 for 3ml, five published notes with white musk alone underneath them, and the 3ml is the sample size because we sell no sampler. Ruled out by name: Nawaab for its aged tobacco, leather and amber; Mastani for its oudh, vanilla and tonka; Ameeri for its sandalwood and soft oudh; Tabac Noir and Zaffran on the perfume line; and the Pack of 3, which is the three heaviest we make. Adaa carries jasmine sambac. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Which SOSA attar should I buy if I want the opposite of smoky, dark and heavy?
SOSA Adaa, and buy the 3ml at Rs 379. It publishes five notes - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - with the musk alone in the base and no resin, amber, aged tobacco, leather or oud anywhere in it. SOSA makes exactly four attars and Adaa is the only oud-free one, with the shortest note list and the lightest base. It does carry jasmine sambac in a supporting role.
What is ruled out to get to that answer?
Nawaab, for its aged tobacco, leather and amber, which make it the smoky one and the heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin. Mastani, for oudh, vanilla and tonka under two florals. Ameeri, which is not smoky but carries sandalwood and a soft oudh. On the SOSA perfume line, Tabac Noir is a tobacco-vanilla and Zaffran a saffron sweet-amber. And the Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055, which is the three heaviest attars and contains no Adaa.
Does SOSA make an incense or resin attar at all?
No. There is no resin-led or incense-led skin fragrance anywhere in the SOSA range, and no published attar note list contains frankincense, myrrh or labdanum. That is a real gap in the range rather than something being withheld, and on this particular brief it happens to be good news. There is also no oud-free woody attar, which is a gap that suits fewer readers, and no vetiver anywhere on the skin line.
Should I buy the Pack of 3 to try several?
No, and it is the clearest mistake available on this brief. The Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, which is the three heaviest attars SOSA makes, and it excludes Adaa entirely. It is also not a sampler: those are three full-size bottles. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, so the honest route is one 3ml of one attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399, worn for a full day.
What single habit will stop me buying a heavy perfume again?
Read the last two notes on a listing before you read the first two. A note list is printed in order of evaporation, so the end of it is the base, and the base is what you wear for most of the day. If either of those last two is a resin, an amber, an oud or a heavy wood, the composition will consolidate on you rather than fade. If it is a musk, it will thin out. The opening is the part chosen to sell you the bottle.
And the disclosure, for the third time: Adaa carries jasmine sambac in a supporting role. If florals are also out for you, none of SOSA's four attars is your bottle, and I would rather tell you than sell you one.
SOSA — Attars and Perfume Oilsfor a reader who wants the opposite of smoky, dark and heavy
SOSA Adaa (₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml) publishes five notes - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - with the musk alone in the base and no resin, amber, tobacco, leather or oud in it. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, phthalate-free, hand-blended in Pune, and it wears 6-8 hours, the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Nawaab and Tabac Noir are ruled out on this page by name, along with Mastani, Ameeri, Zaffran and the Pack of 3, and Adaa's jasmine sambac is printed rather than buried. Send me your three worst bottles and I will read their bases back to you. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. The products named are SOSA's own; the method - shop the note you have ruled out, not the note you hope for - applies to any brand.
Facts verified 17 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, each sold in three sizes, 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Ameeri is ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165, with published notes of Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. SOSA Mastani is ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179, with published notes of night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
