Never beside the bedroom door — that spot serves neither room About a metre off the floor, out of the fan and AC airflow, a foot of clearance Bedroom machine on the far wall, not the nightstand

Placement in a studio is a single question — how far from the hob. A 1BHK asks two harder ones, because you now have a doorway between two rooms and both machines are tempted towards it. The two commonest positions in this flat, the shelf beside the bedroom door and the bedside table, are both wrong, and they are wrong for opposite reasons. Neither costs you anything to fix, which makes this the cheapest improvement available to you.
Quick answers — read this first
Living-area machine: middle of the open space, about a metre up, away from the bedroom door.

Bedroom machine: the far wall from the bed — a dresser or a shelf, never the nightstand.

Both: out of the direct line of the fan or split AC, a foot of clear space around them, and not on the kitchen counter where the extractor takes the output straight outside.
The short answer
Short answer: Put the living-area Sukoon near the centre of the open living-and-kitchen volume, about a metre off the floor, and keep it away from the bedroom doorway. Put the bedroom machine on the opposite wall from the bed rather than on the nightstand. Keep both out of the airflow from a fan or a split AC.
Why it matters: Coverage ratings — 270–320 sq ft for a Sukoon, up to 150 sq ft for a Boond — assume a room with the door shut and still air. A machine in a draught or against an end wall gives you a fraction of that.
Do not: place a diffuser beside the bedroom door hoping to serve both rooms. It wastes output on a door that will be shut half the time and leaves the living area under-served at the same moment.
Straight answer
Where should you place diffusers in a 1BHK?
1. Living area: near the middle, about a metre up. A console, a TV unit or a bookshelf in the body of the open living-and-kitchen space. That is where a Sukoon's 270–320 sq ft rating actually gets used, rather than half of it disappearing into a wall.

2. Not beside the bedroom door. This is the specific 1BHK mistake. It looks like a compromise that serves both rooms and it serves neither — the bedroom will not hold what it receives once the door shuts, and the living room is left with a machine pushed to its edge.

3. Bedroom: the far wall, not the nightstand. A diffuser eighteen inches from your face gives a strong nose and a weak room. On a dresser or a shelf across the room, the scent arrives at the bed diluted and even, which is what you actually want when you are lying still for eight hours.

4. Out of the fan and the AC airflow. Moving air does not spread fragrance evenly — it drives the mist to one wall and holds it there. Keep at least a metre between the machine and the direct path of a ceiling fan or a split unit, and leave a foot of clearance so mist disperses instead of condensing.

5. Not on the kitchen counter. In a 1BHK the kitchen is usually open to the living room, so it feels like a sensible surface. The extractor pulls the output straight outside, and hob heat sits on top of it. Place the machine on the far side of the same room instead.

TL;DR: the living-area machine goes near the middle of the open space about a metre up and away from the bedroom door; the bedroom machine goes on the far wall rather than the nightstand. Keep both out of the draught. It costs nothing and is worth more than an extra drop.
SOSA Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic cool mist diffuser
The machine that needs the room
SOSA Sukoon · 500ml ₹1,899
Rated 270–320 sq ft, and that rating assumes still air and a machine standing in the body of the room rather than jammed against a wall. 16–18 hours a fill on low, remote and steady / 2H / 4H timers, three 15ml Hotel Collection scents in the box.

Why the doorway is the trap in this particular flat

There is a strong instinct in a 1BHK to place the living-room diffuser as close to the bedroom as possible, on the logic that some of it will find its way through. It is the same instinct that puts one machine in a corridor to do a whole flat, and it fails the same way. With the door open, a machine at the threshold sits at one end of the connected volume rather than in the middle, so the living room is served unevenly and the bedroom gets the thin edge. With the door shut, the machine is aimed at plywood. You have found the one position that is wrong in both of your flat's two states.

The bedroom has its own version of this. The nightstand is where everything else in that room goes, so the diffuser goes there too, and the result is a machine misting eighteen inches from your face. Your nose saturates within minutes, the far corner reads as nothing, and you end up cutting the drops until neither position works. Put the same machine on the opposite wall and the scent has a few metres to spread through — the same fragrance, the same dose, arriving as a room rather than as a source.

The three placements that matter

1
PLACEMENT ONE · THE LIVING AREA
In the body of the room, not at its edges
SOSA Sukoon diffuserSOSA Sukoon₹1,899Stand the Sukoon roughly in the middle of the open living-and-kitchen volume, about a metre off the floor — a console table, a TV unit, a bookshelf, a sideboard. Not the floor, not the windowsill with the balcony door open beside it, and not the shelf beside the bedroom door. Leave a foot of clear space around it so the mist can disperse; against a wall or behind a curtain it condenses and you lose a share of what you paid for. If the living room is L-shaped, put the machine at the bend rather than in one leg — from there it reaches both arms, and it is the decision that saves people buying a third machine.
The rule: a diffuser needs a room around it, not a wall behind it.
2
PLACEMENT TWO · THE BEDROOM
Across the room from the bed, at about chest height
The bedroom machine — a Boond at ₹899 for a room under 150 sq ft, or a second Sukoon if it is larger — belongs on the far wall. A dresser, a chest of drawers, a shelf: anywhere that is several steps from your pillow. Two things go wrong on a nightstand. The first is perceptual: at that distance you smell the machine rather than the room, and you will turn the dose down until the rest of the room gets nothing. The second is practical: a full tank of water sits directly above your phone and charger. Keep it clear of the split AC too — a machine in its path paints one wall with fragrance and leaves the bed with none.
The test: if you can smell it clearly with your head on the pillow, it is too close.
3
PLACEMENT THREE · THE KITCHEN AND THE ENTRANCE
Two surfaces that look convenient and are not
In most 1BHKs the kitchen is open to the living room, which makes the counter feel like a legitimate spot — it usually has a free socket, and it is in the same air. It is still wrong. The extractor is designed to remove airborne particles from exactly that space and it does not distinguish between smoke and your fragrance, so a machine on the counter is pumping into a hole. Hob heat and grease do the rest. Keep the diffuser on the living-room side of the same volume. The entrance is the other tempting spot — but a metre inside the front door is a transit zone that opens onto a corridor every time someone arrives, and it loses fragrance to the building. Place it a few steps further in and let the room greet them.

Every spot in a 1BHK, judged

The surfaces people actually use, and what happens at each. Coverage ratings assume a room with the door shut and no strong draught, which is why a machine in the wrong place can behave like a machine one size down.

1BHK placement
Where it was going, and where it should go
Where you were going to put it Verdict Why Better
Shelf beside the bedroom door No Serves neither room — wasted on a door when shut, lopsided when open Middle of the living area, a metre up
Kitchen counter No The extractor removes the output and hob heat sits on it Living-room side of the same open volume
On the floor No Mist settles as it disperses — you scent the skirting boards About a metre up: console, TV unit, shelf
Under the split AC or in front of the fan No Moving air drives mist to one wall and holds it there A metre clear of the airflow line
Bedroom nightstand ★ No Strong nose, weak room — and a water tank above your phone Dresser or shelf on the far wall
Just inside the front door Only for guests A transit zone that opens to the corridor and loses fragrance A few steps further into the living area
One more thing: if a room genuinely will not hold scent, the answer is placement or a second machine in the next air space — never a Megh at ₹3,499, which is rated to 215 sq ft against the Sukoon's 270–320 and exists for tank size and dry-air relief.

The two machines a 1BHK needs, and what goes in them
The SOSA principle
A diffuser placed beside a bedroom door is scenting a door — and leaving the room it stands in short at the same time.
Placement is free and it changes the result more than a drop does. In a two-room flat it is also the difference between two clean rooms and one muddled one.

Height, distance, drops and the order you run them in

Height first, because it is the easiest thing to get right and the most commonly ignored. Aim for about a metre off the floor for both machines. Mist spreads and settles as it travels, so a unit at ankle level has dropped most of its output before crossing the room. Leave a foot of clear space in every direction — a machine tucked behind a photo frame condenses onto the nearest surface, and you will notice the damp patch before you notice the fragrance.

Distance next. In the living area, distance from the bedroom door; in the bedroom, distance from the bed; in both, distance from anything moving air. On drops, the guidance for the Hotel Collection is three to six per tank, and in a 1BHK I would run four in the living area and two to three in the bedroom. If you have placed a machine well you will often find you need fewer drops than before, because none of the output is being thrown at a wall — that is the clearest sign the position is right.

Then the running order, which is a placement question in disguise. Two machines four steps apart will meet in the doorway if both run flat out at once, and what you get is not two rooms but one blurred one. Run the living-area machine through the evening on the 4H timer and start the bedroom machine for the half hour before you go in. Use filtered water in hard-water cities, rinse the tank when you change scents, and never put raw essential or carrier oils into either machine — they are too thick to atomise and will foul the misting plate.

Move the machine before you buy another one. It is the only upgrade that costs nothing.

What the setup costs, and what placement costs

Placement is free, which is why it is the first thing to fix. Below is what the hardware behind it costs in a 1BHK — the Sukoon arrives with three 15ml fragrances, so a second machine adds only the price of the machine.

The 1BHK budget
The cheapest improvement, and the ones that cost money
Setup What you get Covers Total
Moving the machine ★ A metre off the floor, out of the draught, away from the bedroom door Both rooms improve immediately ₹0
The living area Sukoon ₹1,899 — includes 3 × 15ml scents Open living and kitchen, 270–320 sq ft ₹1,899
Both rooms Sukoon ₹1,899 + Boond ₹899 for the bedroom Living area + a bedroom to 150 sq ft ₹2,798
Both rooms, all night Two Sukoons at ₹1,899 each Both rooms, 16–18 hrs a fill each ₹3,798
Running cost A 100ml refill from ₹999, or 300ml ₹1,799 Both machines, months at 2–4 drops from ₹999
Honest notes before you buy: the three 15ml fragrances included with a Sukoon run in any of the ultrasonic machines, so adding a Boond for the bedroom costs ₹899 and nothing more. These are water-based fragrances and add a little humidity, welcome in an air-conditioned bedroom and less so during a coastal monsoon. The machines (Boond, Sukoon, Megh) are imported from China; the Hotel Collection fragrances are composed and made in India. They are not for reed diffusers or for waterless nebulisers like the Vaayu (₹11,999) or Aangan (₹25,999), which run neat oil and cannot take water-based fragrance at all — both are commercial machines and considerably more than a 1BHK needs. Use filtered water in hard-water areas, rinse between scents, and keep fragrance away from children and pets. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

Most of the messages I get about a diffuser "not being strong enough" turn out to be about where it is standing. In a 1BHK it is nearly always one of two spots: the shelf next to the bedroom door, or the bedside table. Both feel obvious. Both are the wrong side of the problem.

The doorway one bothers me most because it comes from good intentions — people are trying to make one machine do two rooms, which is exactly the instinct this whole cluster of writing exists to correct. A machine at a threshold belongs to neither room. Give it a room, put it in the middle of that room, and let the other room have its own.

Try it before you spend anything: move what you already own a metre off the floor, into the body of the room, out of the fan's path, and run the same number of drops for a week. If it still falls short after that, then buy the second machine — and a portion of what you spend funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Where should you place a diffuser in a 1BHK?
The living-area machine goes near the middle of the open living-and-kitchen space, about a metre off the floor, and away from the bedroom doorway. The bedroom machine goes on the far wall from the bed — a dresser or a shelf, not the nightstand. Keep both out of the direct path of a ceiling fan or split AC and leave a foot of clear space around them.
Can I put the diffuser near the bedroom door so it does both rooms?
No — it is the least effective spot in the flat. With the door shut the bedroom receives essentially nothing, so the output is wasted; with the door open it sits at one end of the connected space rather than the middle, so the living area is served unevenly. If you want both rooms, the answer is a second machine — a Boond at ₹899 does most 1BHK bedrooms.
Should the bedroom diffuser go on the nightstand?
No. At that distance you smell the machine instead of the room, so you end up cutting the dose until the rest of the room gets nothing — and a full water tank sits above your phone and charger. Put it on the opposite wall so the fragrance arrives at the bed already spread and even.
Does putting a diffuser on the kitchen counter work in an open kitchen?
Not well. The kitchen shares air with the living room in a 1BHK, so the machine does not need to be in the kitchen to reach it — and on the counter, the extractor removes the output and hob heat works against it. Stand it on the living-room side of the same open volume instead.
How high should a diffuser be placed?
About a metre off the floor. Mist spreads and settles as it travels, so a machine at floor level drops most of its output before it has crossed the room. A console, TV unit, bookshelf or dresser is the right kind of surface — with a foot of clear space around it so the mist disperses rather than condensing on a wall.
