By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated June 2026
When people ask where to use fragrance oils, they usually mean our diffuser fragrance - and the honest answer is that SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection belongs in a SOSA ultrasonic diffuser, a few drops added to the water tank, not applied neat anywhere. From there it is a matter of which scent suits which room. I am Sonal Sahani, an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer, and here is how to place scent through a home.
Quick answers — read this first
Where does it go? In the water tank of an ultrasonic diffuser - a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance, not neat oil on surfaces or skin.

Which room, which scent? Clean tea scents for bedrooms, warm amber for evenings and entryways, bright citrus-pepper for entertaining spaces.

Why not raw oils? Neat essential and carrier oils are too thick for an ultrasonic plate and can clog it. SOSA's water-based fragrance is made to mist.
The short answer
Where: in the diffuser's water tank - a few drops per fill, filtered water.
Bedroom: White Tea Serenity or Tea Garden - clean, calming.
Living / entry: Quiet Luxury or Warm Welcome - soft, gracious, expensive-feeling.
Honest rule: SOSA water-based fragrance only; never neat oils on the plate.
Why water-based fragrance, not raw oils (illustrative)SOSA water-based fragrance — mists cleanly, made for the plateRaw essential / carrier oils — thick, can clog & damage the unit
Illustrative only. Ultrasonic diffusers atomise water; a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance ride the mist. Thick raw oils sit on the plate and clog it.
Straight answer
Where should I use fragrance oils?
Use SOSA's Hotel Collection fragrance inside a SOSA ultrasonic diffuser - a few drops in the water tank, topped with filtered water. That is what it is made for. It is water-based, so it rides the cool mist and scents the whole room cleanly. Do not apply it neat to skin, fabric or surfaces, and do not confuse it with raw essential oils: those are too thick or solvent-heavy for an ultrasonic plate and can clog it. Once it is in the diffuser, the question becomes which scent to run in which room - and that is where the fun starts.
One line: a few drops of SOSA's water-based fragrance in the diffuser tank - match the scent to the room.
Seven hotel-inspired scents, water-based, made for your diffuser.
From ₹299

How to use it in the tank

The method is almost too simple. Fill the diffuser tank with filtered or RO water to its line, add a few drops of your chosen SOSA water-based fragrance, replace the lid and switch it on. The ultrasonic plate turns the whole thing into a fine, cool mist that carries the scent up and out across the room. Start with a few drops and adjust to taste - more for a large or airy room, less for a small one.

Water-based diffuser fragrance: a fragrance formulated to disperse in water and ride an ultrasonic mist. Unlike neat essential oils, it does not sit thick on the plate, so it mists cleanly and does not clog the unit.

The reason we insist on water-based fragrance is not sales - it is physics. An ultrasonic plate atomises water. Thick raw oils float and pool on it instead of misting, and over time that coating dulls or damages the plate. Our fragrance is built to go where the water goes.

A word on what not to do. Do not pour neat perfume, undiluted essential oil, or a carrier oil like almond or jojoba into the tank. Do not dab our diffuser fragrance on your wrists - it is a room fragrance, not a skin perfume. And do not use hot water; these are cool-mist units.

Which scent for which room

Seven scents, each our own interpretation of the style a famous hotel is known for. They are inspired interpretations, not the hotels' actual proprietary scents, and SOSA is not affiliated with the hotels named. Here is how I place them room by room.

Room Scent Feel
Bedroom White Tea Serenity (Westin-inspired) Spa-clean, calming - white tea, aloe, cedar
Living room Quiet Luxury (Ritz-Carlton-inspired) Soft, expensive - white tea, bergamot, cedar
Entryway Warm Welcome (Four Seasons-inspired) Gracious - citrus, floral, sandalwood
Study Forest Suite (1 Hotels-inspired) Grounding - cedarwood, vetiver, green leaves
Evening / entertaining Lobby Bar (W Hotels-inspired) Bold - citrus, pepper, amber

There is no rule you must follow, only a logic that tends to please. Clean tea scents feel right where you rest - bedrooms and quiet rooms. Warm, ambered scents suit evenings and the moment guests step in. Bright, peppery-citrus scents lift a room where people gather and talk.

Myth: "One strong scent for the whole house is best." A single scent everywhere flattens; a home feels considered when the bedroom is calm, the entry is warm, and the living room is soft. Build a small wardrobe of two or three.

Fragrance oils belong in the tank, not on the skin - and the room tells you which scent it wants.

Start with the three fragrances that ship with your diffuser, notice which rooms they suit, and size up to a 100ml or 300ml bottle of the ones you reach for most.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I actually put the fragrance oil?
In the water tank of an ultrasonic diffuser - a few drops of SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance on top of filtered water. It is a room fragrance, not for skin, fabric or bare surfaces.
Can I use raw essential oils in the diffuser instead?
No. Neat essential oils and carrier oils are too thick for an ultrasonic plate and can clog it. Use SOSA's water-based fragrance, which is formulated to mist cleanly through the unit.
How many drops should I add?
Start with a few drops per fill and adjust - more for a large or airy room, fewer for a small one. You can always add another drop; you cannot easily take one out.
Which scent is best for a bedroom?
A clean, calming one - White Tea Serenity (Westin-inspired) or Tea Garden (Shangri-La-inspired). Soft tea scents suit rooms where you rest rather than entertain.
Are these the hotels' real scents?
No. They are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations of the style each hotel is known for. SOSA is not affiliated with or endorsed by the hotels named; the names only describe the scent style.
