Most "my reed doesn't work" complaints are really placement complaints. The reed is fine; it has just been tucked somewhere the air can't reach it or the heat is quietly draining it. Two spots to avoid, and the whole thing changes.
Quick answer
Never in a dead, draught-free corner. A reed has no fan — it needs the room's air movement to carry scent. A still corner traps it over the bottle.
Never on or above a heat source. A warm TV unit, a mantel over a heater, a sunny ledge — heat burns through the oil in days.
Best spot: a waist-height surface in gentle airflow — a console near the walkway or near an AC vent.
The short version
Short answer: Not a still corner, not on heat or in direct sun. Reeds want airflow and a steady, normal temperature.
The pick: a
SOSA reed diffuser from ₹749, placed in the airflow near your seating or entry.
A reed diffuser is a beautifully simple thing, but its simplicity is also its one dependency: it has no fan, no heat, no mist of its own. It just wicks fragrant oil up the sticks and lets it evaporate. Everything else — how far the scent travels, how long the bottle lasts — is decided by where you put it. Get placement right and a modest bottle scents a whole seating area. Get it wrong and the same bottle seems broken. There are two wrong places, and I see both constantly.
01
Mistake one
A dead, draught-free corner
Morning Freshness From ₹749
The instinct is to hide the bottle out of the way — behind the sofa, in the corner beside the cupboard, on the lowest shelf of a closed unit. But a reed depends on the room's own air movement to spread its scent, and those spots have almost none. The fragrance evaporates and just sits in a little cloud over the bottle. It smells lovely when you lean in and vanishes a metre away, which is exactly the "it's too weak" complaint I hear. The fix is free: move it into the path of gentle airflow — a console near the walkway, a side table by the seating, anywhere air actually passes.
Founder tip: if a tissue held near the bottle wouldn't stir at all, the air is too still for a reed. Find a spot where it would.
02
Mistake two
On or above a heat source
Fresh Brew From ₹849
The other classic: the reed ends up on top of the TV unit, on a mantel above a heater, or on a sunny window ledge. Heat speeds evaporation, so the oil is gone far too fast — a strong week or two, then a puzzlingly empty bottle. Worse, uneven heat pushes the lighter top notes off first, so the scent loses its balance before it loses its volume. Keep the bottle at ordinary room temperature, out of direct sun, and off anything that runs warm. A shaded shelf or side table keeps the same fragrance smelling true and lasting the weeks it should.
Founder tip: in peak summer or near a heater, a spot that stays cool is worth more to a reed's lifespan than any refill.
Never here → put it here instead
Reed placement in a living room
| Avoid |
Why |
Better |
| Draught-free corner behind furniture |
No airflow to carry scent |
Console/side table in a walkway |
| On the TV unit / above a heater |
Heat evaporates oil too fast |
Shaded shelf at room temperature |
| Sunny window ledge |
Direct sun unbalances & drains it |
Near an AC vent, out of the sun |
Near gentle airflow but out of heat and sun is the sweet spot — and near the entry so the room greets people.
Put those two rules together and the ideal spot writes itself: a stable, waist-to-chest-height surface, in the path of gentle air movement — a walkway, near an AC vent — but away from heat and direct sun. Near where people enter is a bonus, so the room says hello. And if your living room is large, do not ask one bottle to reach both ends from a single corner; place two reeds at opposite sides so the scent meets in the middle.
"A reed doesn't push — it drifts. Give it moving air and a cool, steady spot, and a small bottle will scent a whole room."

One honest limit, so placement doesn't take the blame unfairly: even in the perfect spot, a reed only reaches so far. If your living room is genuinely large or open-plan and the scent still thins out at the edges after you have fixed placement, that is a coverage ceiling, not a mistake. Keep the reed as a lovely low base note near the seating, and add reach with a powered system — a Sukoon for a mid-size room, or the waterless SOSA Vaayu for a large floor, which carries one even signature corner to corner with no added humidity. As always, fragrance crowns clean, aired air; it never covers for a room that needs a window opened first.
Frequently asked
Where should I never put a reed diffuser in a living room?
Two places: a dead, draught-free corner where no air moves, and directly on or above a heat source. A reed relies on the room's air movement to carry its scent, so a still corner traps the fragrance over the bottle and the room stays faint. Heat — a TV unit that runs warm, a mantel over a heater, a sunny window ledge — evaporates the oil too fast, so the reed smells strong for days then empties long before it should.
Why does a corner make my reed diffuser seem weak?
Because a reed has no fan of its own. It depends entirely on the room's natural air movement to spread the fragrance, and a tucked-away corner behind furniture usually has almost none. The scent evaporates but just pools around the bottle, so it smells fine when you lean in and disappears a metre away. Moving the bottle into gentle airflow — a walkway, a console, near a vent — carries the same fragrance across the whole room.
Can heat damage a reed diffuser?
Heat does not damage the diffuser, but it wrecks its performance and lifespan. Warmth speeds evaporation, so on top of a TV unit, above a heater or in direct sun the oil is used up far too quickly — a strong burst for a week or two, then an empty bottle. It can also throw the scent off balance as lighter notes flash off first. Keep the reed at normal room temperature, out of direct sun and off anything warm.
Is it safe to put a reed diffuser near a TV or electronics?
Keep it beside, not on top of, electronics. A liquid bottle should never sit where a spill could reach a socket or a device, and the warm air many units give off will evaporate the oil too fast. A nearby side table or console at the same level is ideal — close enough to the seating area, away from the heat and the risk of a knock.
Where is the best place to put a reed diffuser in a living room?
On a stable, waist-to-chest-height surface in the path of gentle airflow — a console near the walkway, a side table beside the seating, or near an AC vent so the moving air carries the scent. Away from heat and direct sun, away from dead corners, and ideally near where people enter so the room greets them. In a large living room, two bottles at opposite ends give the most even coverage.
Placement is everything
Give your reed airflow, not a dead corner.
A SOSA alcohol-free reed diffuser scents a whole seating area when it sits in gentle airflow, off the heat and out of the sun. For a large or open-plan room, keep the reed as your base and add a Sukoon or the waterless Vaayu for reach.
