Seven questions cover it, and only one of them is about which fragrance the client likes.
Quick answers — read this first
What questions should I ask a client before specifying home fragrance? Seven, most of them not about scent: which doors stay closed, who lives there and who cannot leave, what the air conditioning is, whether anything already smells, who will maintain it, and only then which register they prefer.

Which question matters most? Which doors are normally kept closed, because a machine cannot cross a closed door and the number of separated zones decides the entire specification.

Which question is most often skipped? Whether anything already smells. Fragrance combines with an existing smell rather than masking it, so an unaddressed source makes the whole scheme worse.
The short answer
Short answer: Seven questions, six of them not about scent. Doors, people, sources, then preference.
The pick: the SOSA Safar (₹3,999) as the flagship delivery gift; volume gifts from ₹299; reed diffusers from ₹749; the Vaayu (₹11,999) for your own premises.
Planning volumes? WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 - tell us the customer moment, per-unit band and quantity and we will quote and build the programme.
Customer gifting that compounds - the SOSA method at a glanceStep 1 - gift the moment: delivery day, possession, checkout, milestone purchaseStep 2 - set the per-unit band: ₹299 to ₹3,999 by customer valueStep 3 - brand the gesture: your card, your story, our fragranceStep 4 - pilot small, then scale to 50, 100, 500 unitsWhatsApp the bulk desk for volume pricing
A customer gift works when it survives the drive home - sweets vanish in a day and keychains join a drawer, but a fragrance is used daily in the customer's own car or living room, replaying your brand at every use. The method: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, brand the gesture with your card, pilot and scale. This guide walks the exact play, with real SOSA options at every band.
Straight answer
What questions should I ask a client before specifying home fragrance?
Seven, and only one is about which scent they like. One: which doors are normally kept closed? This decides the entire plan, because a machine cannot cross a closed door - the number of separated zones, not the square footage, sets the specification. Two: who lives here, and who cannot leave a room? A live-in parent, staff, a child, a long-staying guest. Children's rooms get nothing, and anyone who cannot leave gets a low neutral register and a physical off switch. Three: ducted air conditioning or split units? Ducted joins rooms into one air volume and needs a lower setting; splits keep rooms as islands and push the reed count up. Four: does anything already smell? Cooking, damp, drains, a musty rug, a recent fit-out still curing. This outranks everything, because fragrance combines rather than masks. Five: who will actually maintain it? If nobody, specify reeds - no power, no schedule, no attention. Six: is there a terrace they will ask about? Say now that it cannot hold fragrance. Seven, last: of these three registers, which do you prefer? Vaayu ₹11,999, reeds from ₹749, Hotel Collection from ₹299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
Quick answer: seven questions - doors, people, air conditioning, sources, maintenance, terrace, and only then scent.
The gift most business readers of this guide pilot first: the SOSA Safar - rechargeable waterless car diffuser, three hotel-inspired scents in the box, used by the customer every single day - at ₹3,999 per unit. Volume gifts from ₹299; reeds from ₹749. Or WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 for a bulk quote.

Seven questions, and what each one decides

Seven questions cover this properly, they take about ten minutes, and only the last one is about which fragrance the client likes - which is itself the most useful thing to know about the category. Question one: which doors are normally kept closed? This decides the entire plan and it should be asked first. A machine distributes fragrance through connected moving air and cannot cross a closed door, so the plan divides into zones bounded by the doors that are actually shut in daily life - bedrooms, bathrooms, studies, dressing rooms, utility rooms, often a formal room. The number of those zones, rather than the square footage, sets the specification: each connected zone gets one machine and each closed room gets a reed. It is also why the honest answer to a client asking why one machine will not scent the whole house is a question about their doors rather than a bigger product. Question two: who lives here, and is there anybody who cannot leave a room? A live-in parent, staff who work in the house all day, a child, a long-staying guest, somebody with a fragrance sensitivity. This is a consent question and it changes the specification rather than decorating it. Children's rooms get no fragrance. Staff quarters and utility areas get nothing. And anybody who shares the home and cannot leave a room they did not choose the scent for gets a low neutral register and a physical off switch - not an app-only one, because an app means asking somebody else for permission to change the air in a room they are in. If one person in the household is sensitive, their preference sets the ceiling rather than being averaged with anybody else's. Question three: is the air conditioning ducted or split units? This changes the zone map more than the floor plan does. A ducted system draws air from several rooms and pushes it back out, effectively joining them into one body of moving air whenever it runs - so fragrance travels much further than the plan suggests, sometimes into rooms that were meant to be excluded, and the setting should be lower rather than higher. Split units recirculate within their own room, so rooms stay islands even with doors open, which means fragrance does not travel and the reed count goes up. Ask this before finalising anything, and note that nothing should be introduced into ductwork without the HVAC designer, since our machines are standalone room units. Question four: does anything already smell? This outranks every other question in the list, and it is the one most often skipped. Cooking that drifts from the kitchen and settles in upholstery, monsoon damp, a musty rug or cane furniture, a bin, a drain, dry traps in a bathroom nobody uses, or a recent fit-out still off-gassing paint, sealers, adhesives and engineered board. Fragrance does not mask any of those - it combines with them, and the combination is consistently worse than either component alone and reads unmistakably as a house hiding something. If the answer to this question is yes, the specification is extraction, dehumidification, cleaning or time, and fragrance comes afterwards. It is worth saying that plainly, because a designer who declines to sell into an unaddressed problem is believed on everything else. Question five: who will actually maintain it? A machine needs filling, a schedule set once, and occasional cleaning with a rinse between scents. That is fine in a household with staff or an owner who enjoys it, and a poor bet in a formal room nobody enters, a guest suite used ten nights a year, a second home closed for months, or with a client who will not maintain equipment. Where the answer is nobody, specify reeds, which need no power, no scheduling and no attention and run continuously at a low level - Garden Bloom and Evening Calm at Rs 799, Morning Freshness at Rs 749, Fresh Brew and Mountain Breeze at Rs 849, three to four months a bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml, roughly Rs 200 to Rs 280 per room per month. This question also decides whether a reorder path is enough or whether somebody needs to own it. Question six: is there a terrace, balcony or verandah they will ask about? Ask it before they do. A covered or open outdoor area cannot hold fragrance at all, because the air is not enclosed and it disperses as fast as it is produced - a larger machine does not change the physics. Raising it early turns a refusal into a piece of technical advice, and it is the request that comes up more than any other. Mark it excluded on the drawing rather than leaving it blank. Question seven, and only now: of these three registers, which do you prefer? Bring three you can defend rather than the full range, because a client shown seven will defer rather than choose, and a deferred decision becomes yours without the ownership that would have made it stick. A good default set is Quiet Luxury, with white tea, bergamot and cedar, as the safe centre; Forest Suite, with cedarwood, vetiver and green leaves, where the scheme is material-led; and White Tea Serenity, with white tea, aloe and cedar, as the softest. Where the palette is genuinely decorative - marble, brass, velvet, dark timber - offer Old-World Glamour, with amber, violet and woods, for a closed room rather than an open plan. The seven Hotel Collection registers are Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, and they are SOSA's own interpretations, since we are independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or associated with any hotel brand. Two things you do not ask, because they are not the client's to decide. The level is yours to set, by rule rather than by preference, because everybody adapts to a steady background within about an hour and the household is structurally unable to judge their own intensity - low, continuous, corrected only if a visitor remarks on it. And the one-register principle is yours: one scent throughout the home varied by intensity rather than a different scent per room, because two registers meet in doorways many times a day and the collision reads as something being wrong. Both belong in the handover pack in writing. On systems, the plan decides: the Vaayu at Rs 11,999 for a large connected volume, waterless with no tank, coverage up to 1,000 square metres or roughly 10,700 square feet, with Bluetooth app and timer control; the Megh at Rs 3,499 with a 6L tank; the Sukoon at Rs 1,799; the Boond at Rs 799; and reeds behind every closed door. Machines take the water-based Hotel Collection only at three to six drops per tank with a rinse between scents, never reed oil, which can damage them. Never the kitchen at any time. We make no claim that fragrance affects mood, focus, sleep, stress or wellbeing. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Volume pricing is quoted against the specification on WhatsApp.

Why this works
What the questions decide
1 Which doors are normally closed - this decides the whole plan 2 Who lives here, and who cannot leave a room 3 Does anything already smell - which outranks everything 4 And only then, which of three registers they prefer
The flagship delivery gift: the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - a rechargeable waterless car diffuser with three hotel-inspired scents in the box. Per-unit gifts from ₹299; volume pricing on WhatsApp.
01
Doors, people, air, sources
The four that decide the specification
Closed doors set the zone count. Who cannot leave a room sets the consent rules. Ducted or split changes the zone map. And an existing smell outranks everything, because fragrance combines with it.
Tip: None of those is a question about scent.
02
Maintenance, and the terrace
Ask both before they come up
Where nobody will attend to equipment, specify reeds. And raise the terrace yourself - it cannot hold fragrance at any size, and asking first turns a refusal into technical advice.
03
Then, and only then, preference
Three registers, not seven
A client shown the full range defers rather than choosing, and a deferred decision becomes yours without the ownership that makes it stick. Quiet Luxury, Forest Suite, White Tea Serenity.
Tip: The level and the one-register rule stay yours.
The SOSA principle
Six of the seven questions are not about scent at all.
Which tells you where the work in this category actually is.

A survey that takes ten minutes

Seven questions cover it, they take ten minutes, and only the last is about scent. One: which doors are normally kept closed? This decides the plan, because a machine cannot cross a closed door, so the number of separated zones rather than the square footage sets the specification - each connected zone one machine, each closed room a reed. Two: who lives here, and who cannot leave a room? A live-in parent, staff, a child, a long-staying guest, anybody with a sensitivity. Children's rooms get nothing, staff quarters and utility get nothing, and anyone who cannot leave gets a low neutral register and a physical off switch rather than an app, because an app means asking permission to change the air in a room you are in - and a sensitive person's preference sets the ceiling rather than being averaged. Three: ducted or split air conditioning? Ducted joins rooms into one body of moving air and distributes further, so the setting goes lower and fragrance may reach excluded rooms; splits keep rooms as islands, which pushes the reed count up. Nothing goes into ductwork without the HVAC designer. Four: does anything already smell? This outranks everything and is most often skipped - drifted cooking, monsoon damp, a musty rug, a bin, dry traps, or a fit-out still off-gassing. Fragrance combines with those rather than masking them, so the specification becomes extraction, dehumidification, cleaning or time. Five: who will maintain it? Machines need filling, a schedule and occasional cleaning; where the answer is nobody, specify reeds, which need none of it, at Rs 749 to Rs 849, three to four months a bottle, roughly Rs 200 to Rs 280 per room per month. Six: is there a terrace they will ask about? Raise it first - covered or open outdoor air cannot hold fragrance at any size of machine - which turns a refusal into technical advice. Seven, last: of these three registers, which do you prefer? Bring three you can defend, because a client shown seven defers, and a deferred decision becomes yours without the ownership that makes it stick - Quiet Luxury, Forest Suite and White Tea Serenity, with Old-World Glamour offered for a decorative palette behind a door, from Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml. Two things you do not ask: the level, which is yours to set by rule since the household adapts within an hour and cannot judge it; and the one-register principle, since two registers collide in doorways. Systems: the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 with coverage to 1,000 m², SOSA Megh at Rs 3,499, SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,799, SOSA Boond at Rs 799, reeds behind every door, machines taking Hotel Collection only and never reed oil. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards. Volume pricing is quoted on WhatsApp.

Whatever your business gifts, the logic is the same: gift the milestone moment, set the per-unit band by customer value, keep the register gentle and crowd-safe, and brand the gesture with your card rather than your logo on the product. Every SOSA fragrance is alcohol-free and made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so every customer gift quietly gives twice. Honest notes for business gifters: customer taste varies, so volume programmes should run gentle, crowd-tested registers - fresh, clean and lightly floral scents are received well across every profile, and space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) avoid the personal-taste risk of skin perfume entirely. Listed prices are per-unit store prices; volume pricing, pilot batches, branded cards and custom hamper builds are quoted on WhatsApp - and signature-scent development for your brand is a consultation with our perfumer, not an off-the-shelf item, so timelines are discussed case by case. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with any hotel brand. Ultrasonic diffusers use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil - the two are not interchangeable. All personal fragrances are alcohol-free and IFRA-compliant. WhatsApp bulk desk: +91 96192 18531. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.

And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

What should I ask a client before specifying home fragrance?
Seven questions: which doors stay closed, who cannot leave a room, ducted or split air conditioning, whether anything already smells, who will maintain it, whether there is a terrace, and only then which register they prefer.
Which question matters most?
Which doors are normally kept closed, because a machine cannot cross a closed door and the number of separated zones decides the whole specification.
Which is most often skipped?
Whether anything already smells. Fragrance combines with an existing smell rather than masking it, so an unaddressed source makes the scheme worse rather than better.
Why ask about the terrace before they do?
Because covered and open outdoor air cannot hold fragrance at any size of machine, and raising it yourself turns a refusal into a piece of technical advice.
What should not be asked?
The level and the one-register principle. Both are technical decisions, and the household cannot judge its own intensity anyway. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the customer-gifting advice applies whatever your business finally buys.

Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
