How long a fragrance stays on you and how far it travels from you are two separate measurements, and people keep buying as if they were one. A woody attar can do the first very well and the second hardly at all. That is the whole reason it wears close.
Quick answers — read this first
What makes a woody attar wear close to the skin? Four things: an oil carrier instead of alcohol, heavy woody materials that release slowly, the warmth of the place you apply it, and a small dose. Each one lowers how readily the fragrance lifts off the skin and into the air.
Does a close-wearing attar mean it fades quickly? No. Staying power and reach are different. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for its attars, and says nothing about how far they travel, because a woody base can be present at hour three while hardly leaving the skin at all.
Which SOSA attar is the closest-wearing woody one?SOSA Adaa, from ₹379 for 3ml: the lightest of the four, no oudh, on a base of white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. SOSA Ameeri is the sandalwood alternative, a step warmer, from ₹385.
The short answer
Short answer: An oil carrier, heavy woody materials, warm skin and a small dose. Together they keep a fragrance present on the skin without lifting it far into the air.
The pick: One 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379, one dab on the chest once you are dressed, judged at hour three. SOSA Ameeri is the sandalwood alternative.
Next step: Tell us what you wear now and what bothered you about it, and we will say whether a woody oil is the right change. Ask for an attar recommendation.
Four things that govern how closely a woody attar wears, in the order the skin meets them. The first is the carrier and the last is the 3ml price, because the cheapest way to test any of this is on your own skin.
Adaa first, then the two woody attars that are warmer
What Makes a Woody Attar Wear Close to the Skin Rather Than Project Strongly?
Nothing about a woody note makes it quiet on its own. Closeness comes from how the fragrance is carried and how much of it you wear. Here are the four causes in the order that matters, and then the bottle.
1. Separate staying from travelling. A fragrance that stays on the skin for hours is a statement about the base materials. A fragrance that travels is a statement about how readily its molecules leave the skin. Woody materials are strong on the first and weak on the second, which is why they make good close-wearing bases.
2. Put the fragrance in an oil, not an alcohol. Alcohol evaporates quickly and carries scent upward with it. An oil sits on the skin and lets go slowly. SOSA's attars are alcohol-free, DPG-free roll-on oils on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, which is the format that keeps a scent near its source.
3. Choose heavy woods over bright tops. Vetiver, cedarwood and sandalwood are slow materials. Bergamot and neroli are fast ones that leave in minutes. The more of a pyramid that sits at the bottom, the closer it wears once the top is gone.
4. Let warmth and dose do the rest. Warm skin lifts a fragrance a little and a cool, covered spot lifts it less. At one dab it murmurs and at two it has a voice, so the surest way to wear close is the smaller dose in a covered place.
5. Take Adaa, honestly described.SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is the lightest of the four attars, with no oudh, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. If you want sandalwood as the named wood, SOSA Ameeri at ₹385 is the one to try, and it is a step warmer.
SOSA publishes no projection figure for any attar, and I will not make one up. What I can give you is the mechanism, the published pyramids and a 3ml that lets you judge the result on your own skin.
A woody attar wears close because of an oil carrier, heavy materials, warm skin and one dab. SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is built that way. The 3ml, one dab on skin, judged three hours later.
What to buy for a woody attar that stays close
The product
SOSA Adaa, the lightest of the four attars and the only one with no oudh. Base of white musk, vetiver and cedarwood, in an alcohol-free roll-on oil, hand-blended in Pune.
The size to start on
The 3ml, at ₹379. Close-wearing is something you confirm on your own skin, and the 3ml is enough for the three days that takes. The 6ml at ₹669 and 12ml at ₹1,149 come after.
Dabs, and where
One dab, on the chest, once you are dressed. A covered place lifts the scent less than an open throat does. Add a second dab only on day four, and only if one has really disappeared.
At hour three
The bergamot, cardamom and neroli have gone. By the published pyramid, the white musk, vetiver and cedarwood are what remain: dry woods, near the skin, still there.
What it costs to stay on it
No second purchase until the first one has earned it. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin and nothing about reach, and you have just seen why.
I make Adaa to be worn near, with vetiver and cedarwood doing the work at the bottom and no oudh anywhere in it. A 3ml and one dab will tell you in three ordinary days whether close is as close as you meant. If you want sandalwood in the middle, Ameeri is the honest second.
Buy one 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 and nothing else for now: Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli on top, jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang in the heart, white musk, vetiver and cedarwood underneath. An alcohol-free roll-on oil, hand-blended in Pune, with no oudh at all. Apply one dab on the chest once you are dressed and judge it at hour three.
Three of SOSA's four attars carry a wood you can name, and they sit at different distances from a skin scent. All are alcohol-free, DPG-free roll-on oils on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. I have ordered them by how much else is in the bottle, because that is what moves an attar away from the skin.
₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml. Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over jasmine sambac, magnolia and ylang ylang, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four, with no oudh. Its woods are the dry kind, and the base is where most of the pyramid's weight sits once the citrus has gone.
₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml. Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh, amber and white musk. It carries some oudh and amber, so there is more in the bottle than in Adaa. A good second attar once close and woody is settled, and the one to choose if sandalwood must be named.
₹389 for 3ml, ₹685 for 6ml, ₹1,179 for 12ml. Litchi, bergamot and pink pepper over night-blooming jasmine and Damask rose, on Mysore sandalwood, oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka. A deep floral-gourmand. Its sandalwood is real, but it is one of several heavy things in the base, which makes it a different brief from a close skin scent.
None of these is a measurement of your skin or a promise about the air around you. Each is a reason, readable before you buy, that a woody oil keeps its scent near its source rather than sending it out.

An oil carrier lets go slowly; an alcohol lifts at once
In general perfumery terms, alcohol is a volatile solvent. It evaporates in moments and takes a share of the aroma up with it, which is where the burst of a freshly sprayed fragrance comes from. An oil does not evaporate that way. The fragrance sits in it, on the skin, and escapes gradually. That is the structural reason an oil reads as nearer to the wearer. SOSA's attars are alcohol-free and DPG-free on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, which means there is no solvent giving the scent a push.
Tip: This is a statement about format, not about strength. A slow release can still be fully present at hour three.
Adaa at ₹379 is the lightest of the four, in the same alcohol-free oil format, and the least that has been added to push it outward.
Heavy woods hold on to the skin; light tops leave it
Perfumers talk about volatility. Citrus and neroli are volatile: they are the first thing you smell and the first thing gone. Vetiver, cedarwood and sandalwood are the opposite, heavy and slow. They are what remains on skin after the top has gone, yet they hardly rise from it. That is the difference between staying and reaching, and it is why woods are the classic base for a skin scent. Adaa's base is white musk with vetiver and cedarwood. Ameeri's heart holds Indian sandalwood.
Tip: Read a pyramid from the bottom up. The more of its weight is in the base, the more it will behave like a skin scent after the top has gone.
Ameeri at ₹385 puts Indian sandalwood in the heart over soft oudh, amber and white musk: heavy, but with more in the base than Adaa has.
Warm skin lifts a little, and the dose decides the rest
Heat helps molecules leave a surface, so a warm place releases more than a cool or covered one. That is physics, not a claim about your skin. It gives you two levers. Where you put the dab matters: the chest under a shirt is more contained than the open side of the neck. And how many dabs matters most. One is a whisper and two is a sentence. An attar that seems to travel further than you wanted is, more often than not, a dose or placement question before it is a product question.
Tip: If one dab disappears by hour three, add a second on day four. Do not begin with two to find out.
Mastani at ₹389 shows what a heavier base does: Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka, a deeper and sweeter attar than the brief asks for.
A woody attar wears close not because it is faint, but because its weight is at the bottom: an oil carrier, slow materials and a small dose keep a fragrance present on the skin without handing it to the air.
That is why a pyramid can answer this question before you smell anything. Look at what carries it, then at what is in the base, and be sceptical of any description of reach that comes without a mechanism.
The closest-wearing woody floor in the range: Adaa at ₹379: Calabrian bergamot, green cardamom and neroli over three white flowers, on white musk, vetiver and cedarwood. The lightest of the four attars, with no oudh at all, in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml.
These are the four things that govern how closely a woody attar wears. The table says what each does, and where SOSA stands. Two are fixed by how the attars are made, and two are in your hands the moment you open the bottle.
The SOSA plan
The four levers on closeness, and what each one does
The lever
What it does, and where SOSA stands
The carrier: oil or alcohol
An oil releases slowly; an alcohol lifts at once. Fixed by the maker. All four SOSA attars are alcohol-free oils on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, so this lever is already set.
The materials: heavy woods or light tops
Heavy materials stay and hardly rise. Fixed by the pyramid. Adaa has vetiver and cedarwood in the base with white musk; look at the bottom of any pyramid you are considering. View →
The place: warm and open or covered
Warmth lifts a scent a little. In your hands. The chest, dressed, is more contained than the open side of the neck.
The dose: one dab or two
At one dab it murmurs and at two it has a voice. In your hands, and the most powerful lever of the four. Ameeri has more in the bottle than Adaa, so it is the one to start at a single dab. View →
If sandalwood should be the named wood: Ameeri at ₹385: Persian saffron, pink pepper and bergamot over Taif rose and Indian sandalwood, on soft oudh, amber and white musk. A step warmer than Adaa, and the second bottle rather than the first.
The fork is which wood you mean. Adaa is vetiver and cedarwood over white musk, dry and the closest. Ameeri is Indian sandalwood under Taif rose, a step warmer. Pick the one that matches the wood you named in your own head.
Two rows. Adaa is the answer for the reader who wants dry woods and the least in the bottle, and Ameeri is the answer for the reader who wants sandalwood named. The note underneath says what neither of them is, and what I will not claim for either.
Both rows start small: the 3ml of Adaa at ₹379, or the 3ml of Ameeri at ₹385. The larger sizes are a purchase for after a full season, not instead of one: ₹379 for 3ml, ₹669 for 6ml, ₹1,149 for 12ml for Adaa, and ₹385 for 3ml, ₹679 for 6ml, ₹1,165 for 12ml for Ameeri. Neither is a promise about reach. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for the attars and nothing further, publishes no projection figure for any of them, and would distrust anyone who did; how a fragrance wears depends on skin, dose, clothing and the day. White musk is a base note in Adaa, Ameeri and Nawaab and never the subject, and SOSA makes no pure musk. A patch test on first use is the only skin advice we give. No one can guarantee what anyone else will make of it, and I will not try. Ours is a contact page and a person who replies: Ask for an attar recommendation and tell us what you wear now.

A note from Sonal
A mistake I hear described often is someone who has bought a strong spray, found it too loud, and concluded that woody fragrances are not for them. What they may have found is that they dislike alcohol lifting a woody note into the room. The wood was never the problem. Put the same materials in an oil and apply them in a smaller dose, and the character changes completely, because the thing that was doing the travelling has been taken away.
I should be plain about what I cannot offer. I cannot give you a distance, and I would be suspicious of anyone who did, because nobody's skin, clothing or day is the same as anybody else's. What I can give you is the mechanism: an oil, heavy woods, a small dose. I can also say which of my attars carries the least in the bottle, and that is Adaa, which has no oudh and ends on vetiver and cedarwood. If it is sandalwood you want, Ameeri is the step up.
So the advice is small. One 3ml, one dab on the chest once you are dressed, three ordinary days, and a judgment at hour three, when the citrus has gone and only the base is left. If the base is as near as you wanted, you will know. If it has faded, a second dab on day four is the only change I would make. No one can guarantee what anyone else will make of how you smell, so the only measure is yours. A portion of every purchase supports Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Does an alcohol-free oil really wear closer than a spray?
In general perfumery terms, it tends to. Alcohol evaporates quickly and carries aroma upward with it, while an oil releases slowly from the skin. SOSA's attars are alcohol-free oils, so they sit at the close end of that range. I will not put a distance on it, because the dose, the place you apply it and the day change the result more than the format does.
Is a close-wearing attar the same as one that fades fast?
No. Staying power and reach are different properties. SOSA states 6–8 hours on skin for its attars, which is a statement about how long it is present, and says nothing about how far it travels. A woody base can be there at hour three while hardly leaving the skin, which is exactly what close-wearing means.
Is every woody attar a close-wearing one?
No. SOSA Nawaab is woody in the sense of sandalwood and oud-led, and it is the deepest of the four, so it is a different brief. The wood helps, but the rest of the pyramid decides. Dry woods with a light top, as in SOSA Adaa, sit nearer the skin than a bottle with oud, leather or vanilla in the base.
Where should I put it if I want it as close as possible?
One dab, on the chest once you are dressed. A covered, cooler place lifts less than the open throat. Skip the second dab on the first three days, and if one has genuinely gone by hour three, add a second on day four. That order tells you more than starting with two and trying to subtract.
What if it is closer than I wanted and I cannot tell it is there?
Then a second dab, or a warmer place such as the side of the neck, is the change to try before you buy anything else. If that fails, SOSA Ameeri has more in the bottle than SOSA Adaa. Tell us what you smelled at hour one and hour three and we will say honestly whether the range is the right fit.
The woody attar to leave out of this search: Mastani at ₹389 has Mysore sandalwood in the base with oudh, Madagascar vanilla and tonka. A deep floral-gourmand and the fullest of the woody three, which is the opposite of the quiet brief.
SOSA — A Close Startone 3ml of Adaa, one dab on the chest once dressed, judged at hour three
