Most reed diffusers do not run out early - they are made to fade faster by where they sit and how they are used. I am Sonal, the perfumer behind SOSA, and almost everyone can stretch a bottle by weeks with three or four small habits. Below are my honest, practical tips to make a reed diffuser last longer at home, calibrated for the heat and draughts of an Indian house.
Do fewer reeds really last longer? Yes. Each reed is a wick, so fewer reeds release scent more slowly and use oil more gradually. Two or three reeds is the long-lasting setting; the full set is stronger but empties faster.
Why should I flip the reeds? Flipping refreshes the scent by bringing oil-soaked reed back to the top, so you get a little boost without adding reeds. Once a week is plenty for most homes.
Three habits do most of the work. First, use fewer reeds - two or three instead of the full set - because each reed is a wick, and fewer wicks means slower, longer-lasting oil use. Second, place it well: keep the bottle out of direct sun and away from AC vents and draughts, which pull scent off the reeds and empty the bottle unevenly. Third, flip the reeds about once a week to refresh the throw without spending more oil. Heat is the one thing you cannot fully control - even a well-placed 50ml lasts roughly 6 to 8 weeks at around 45°C - but these habits will stretch any bottle, including a forgiving starter like Evening Calm, by weeks.
Fewer reeds, smart placement, flip weekly. Keep it out of sun and away from AC vents. Heat is the big variable - everything else you can manage.
Placement and conditions
Where a diffuser sits decides more than people expect. The same bottle can last twice as long in a cool, still corner as it does next to a sunny window or an AC vent.
Reed count and weekly habits
After placement, the way you use the reeds is what stretches a bottle. None of this is fiddly - it is a couple of minutes a week.

Versailles
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, and when I came home to India I kept noticing the same thing on the shelves: lovely bottles, vague labels. Nobody would tell you what the carrier was, or name the notes.
So SOSA reed diffusers use a disclosed CCT coconut-derived carrier, are phthalate-free and IFRA-aligned, name their top, heart and base notes, and are tested in real Indian heat and humidity - not a mild lab climate. Flame-free, heatless, electricity-free, built from real materials.
I would rather you used this guide to buy well than to buy ours by reflex. If another brand discloses its carrier and names its materials, buy it happily. I just think you deserve to know what is scenting your home.
Frequently asked questions
Use fewer reeds, keep it out of direct sun and away from AC vents and draughts, and flip the reeds about once a week. Together these habits can add weeks to a single bottle.
Two or three. Each reed is a wick, so fewer reeds release scent slowly and use oil gradually. Add a reed only if the room needs more throw - the full set is stronger but empties faster.
About once a week. Flipping brings the oil-soaked ends back to the top and refreshes the throw using the oil already in the reeds. Flipping more often than that just speeds up use without much benefit.
On a shaded shelf or side table, away from direct sun, AC vents and draughty doorways. Moving air and heat pull scent off the reeds and empty the bottle faster, so a cool, still spot lasts longest.
Roughly 6 to 8 weeks in peak summer at around 45°C, and longer in a cooler, air-conditioned room. Heat, draughts and reed count are the biggest variables, which is why placement and reed habits matter so much.
