Founder Diaries · Diwali Budget · The small-budget guide
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
This is the whole small-budget question in one place: every price step SOSA has between ₹299 and ₹849, what exists at each one, what it is genuinely good for, and the arithmetic that decides which step your particular list can carry. A small Diwali budget is not a number. It is a ratio — total money divided by number of names — and almost every small budget I have been shown was created by the second figure rather than the first. So this guide spends as much time on the list as on the shelf. It also states plainly what a small budget cannot buy from us, because a guide that only tells you what to purchase is an advertisement wearing a guide's clothing.
Quick answers — read this first
The ten price steps: Hotel Collection 15ml ₹299 · jar candles ₹379 · Sandalwood jar ₹449 · wax melts and ceramic mugs ₹474 · bubble candles ₹474–₹569 · ribbed and face mugs and taper sets ₹569 · Amber Rose ₹599 · Cloud trinket dish and a candle two-pack ₹664 · Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 · Garden Bloom and Evening Calm ₹799 · Fresh Brew and Mountain Breeze ₹849.

The one figure that fixes most small budgets: the number of names. Twelve gifts at ₹379 is ₹4,548; six at ₹749 is ₹4,494. Nearly identical money, entirely different outcome.

What nothing below ₹749 can do: be a reed diffuser. There is no smaller bottle and no cheaper scent, and under ₹750 there is exactly one composition rather than five.

Free shipping starts above ₹499, so consolidate. Nine separate small orders and one order of nine are not the same amount of money.
The short answer
Short answer: sort the list into two groups before you buy anything. For the homes you actually visit, a 50ml reed diffuser from ₹749 — glass, six fibre reeds, 6–8 weeks, nothing to light and nothing else to buy. For everybody else, the same ₹379 jar candle or ₹449 Sandalwood jar repeated, bought in one order. Two products, not eight, and the total usually lands below what you spent last year.
How the category works: a reed diffuser is a glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds standing in it. Oil climbs the fibre and evaporates off the exposed length into the room — no flame, no socket, no switch, and nothing to operate beyond turning the reeds over weekly. 50ml runs 6–8 weeks and 130ml runs 14–18 weeks. The reeds are fibre rather than rattan because rattan pores clog in Indian humidity.
Straight answer
How do you buy Diwali gifts on a genuinely small budget?
1. Count the names before you look at a single product. The ceiling in your head was almost certainly produced by dividing a total by a list, so the list is the variable worth examining first. Most Diwali lists carry four or five names that exist purely by accretion — added one year, never removed.

2. Sort what remains into two groups, not five. Homes you actually enter, and everybody else. That single cut does more work than any amount of shopping, because it tells you where information exists and where you are guessing.

3. Buy two products, not eight. One for each group, repeated. Decision cost is real: an evening spent choosing eight different things is an evening, and it does not produce eight better gifts.

4. For the group you are guessing at, the floor is ₹379. A jar candle gives roughly 15–18 hours and is complete in the jar. The Sandalwood jar at ₹449 is the same argument with more weight to it. Below ₹379 there is nothing on our store I would hand to anyone.

5. For the homes you visit, the honest answer is ₹749 and up. A 50ml reed diffuser is a refillable glass bottle with six fibre reeds, needs nothing bought to go with it, runs 6–8 weeks and works out at roughly ₹13–₹18 a day across that run.

6. Know that ₹750 is a one-scent ceiling. Morning Freshness is ₹749; Garden Bloom and Evening Calm are ₹799; Fresh Brew and Mountain Breeze are ₹849. A hundred rupees is the whole fragrance decision.

7. Avoid anything that needs a second purchase. Wax melts at ₹474 need a burner. Taper candles at ₹569 need a holder. The 15ml Hotel Collection at ₹299 needs an ultrasonic machine. None is included; all three are good products and poor blind gifts.

8. Place one order. Free shipping starts above ₹499, and across a list the difference between one consolidated order and nine small ones is not trivial. It is also the only logistics fact I am able to state anywhere in this guide.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: shorten the list, split it in two, buy two products. ₹379 or ₹449 for the names you are guessing at; ₹749 and up for the homes you enter. Nothing below ₹749 is a reed diffuser, ₹750 is a one-scent ceiling, and free shipping starts above ₹499 — so place one order, not nine.
SOSA Sandalwood scented jar candle at ₹449, the workhorse of a small Diwali budget
The workhorse of a small list
SOSA Sandalwood jar candle ₹449
If a small budget has a single workhorse, this is it. Hand-poured in small batches, roughly 15–18 hours, complete in the jar — no burner, no holder, no machine, nothing to assemble. Sandalwood is the least argued-with warm note in Indian homes, which matters when the same object is going to eight people whose tastes you have never discussed. Its one condition is a household where somebody lights candles; that is a habit rather than a purchase, but it is a real filter. Ten of these is ₹4,490 and clears free shipping in a single order. Never leave one burning unattended, and at Diwali remember that a room may already have several flames in it.

Part one — a small budget is a ratio

Every conversation I have had about a small Diwali budget begins with a rupee figure and turns out, within about two minutes, to be about a list. Someone says they have ₹5,000, and what they mean is that they have ₹5,000 and sixteen names, which is ₹312 each, which is below the floor of anything worth handing over. The rupee figure is rarely the thing that is small. The ratio is. This matters because the two numbers are not equally easy to change: household budgets at this time of year are usually fixed, while lists are almost always negotiable, and nobody has ever run out of money at Diwali so much as run out of names they were willing to leave off.

1
THE DEFINITION · TOTAL DIVIDED BY NAMES
The ceiling in your head is an output, not an input
Work backwards through your own number and you will usually find the division that produced it. A ₹400 ceiling is very often ₹6,000 across fifteen names; a ₹300 ceiling is ₹4,500 across the same fifteen. Neither number was chosen; both were calculated, and the calculation had a variable in it that nobody examined. Twelve gifts at ₹379 comes to ₹4,548. Six gifts at ₹749 comes to ₹4,494. That is fifty-four rupees between two entirely different Diwalis — one in which twelve people receive a jar candle apiece, and one in which six people receive a glass bottle that runs for six to eight weeks. Neither is wrong. But only one of them was ever consciously decided, and it is worth being the person who decides rather than the person who divides.
The test: write the list, then strike out anyone you have not spoken to since last Diwali. If the ceiling moves, it was never a money problem.
2
THE SHELVES · TEN STEPS, NOT A SPECTRUM
Prices do not slide; they sit on steps, with gaps between them
SOSA Sandalwood scented jar candle at ₹449Sandalwood jar₹449Between ₹299 and ₹849 there are ten real steps and several stretches of nothing. Nothing exists between ₹299 and ₹379. Nothing exists between ₹664 and ₹749. A budget set at ₹500 or ₹700 is a budget set in a gap, which means it will always be spent slightly below or slightly above itself. That is worth knowing before you commit to a round number, because the round numbers people choose — ₹300, ₹500, ₹700 — happen to be three of the emptiest places on the ladder. The full set of steps is in Part two, with what sits at each and what it is honestly good for; the short version is that ₹379 is the floor of what is worth giving and ₹749 is the floor of the reed range, with no bridge between them beyond ceramics and wax.
3
THE LINE · ₹499 AND CONSOLIDATION
Small budgets lose the most money at the bottom of the ladder
Free shipping starts above ₹499. On a small budget this line does more damage than anywhere else, because the cheapest gifts are precisely the ones that fail to clear it individually. A single ₹379 candle is an order with a delivery charge attached; ten of them in one basket is ₹3,790 and clears the line without effort. The practical rule is simple and slightly boring: decide the whole list first, then place one order. People buy Diwali gifts the way they buy groceries — a few at a time, as names occur to them — and that habit costs real money at this end of the range. It is also the reason the gap between a ₹379 gift and a ₹749 gift is narrower in practice than the two labels suggest, since only one of them clears the line on its own.
The habit: one basket, placed once. It is the only piece of Diwali logistics entirely within your control.

Part two — the whole ladder, ₹299 to ₹849

Every step SOSA has between ₹299 and ₹849, what sits on it, whether it works straight out of the box, what its stated life is and which kind of name on your list it suits. No price is quoted here for any gift category outside our own range — the argument is about what an object does after it is handed over, not about what it cost.

The complete small-budget ladder
Ten steps, and what each one is honestly for
Price step What exists there Complete in the box? Stated life The name on your list it suits
₹749 ★ Morning Freshness 50ml reed diffuser Yes — bottle, oil, six fibre reeds 6–8 weeks Anyone whose home you enter, and anyone you are guessing at
₹849 Fresh Brew and Mountain Breeze 50ml Yes 6–8 weeks One name whose taste you actually know — see Part three
₹799 Garden Bloom and Evening Calm 50ml Yes 6–8 weeks A mixed family who will compare notes; a small flat
₹664 Cloud trinket dish, or a candle two-pack Yes Permanent · roughly 30–36 hours A home you have been inside and seen the surfaces of
₹599 Amber Rose candle Yes Roughly 15–18 hours A household that lights candles most evenings
₹569 Ribbed and face ceramic mugs; taper candle sets Mugs yes · tapers need a holder Permanent · varies One person you know well. Never eight you do not
₹474 Everyday Beautiful Mugs; wax melts; bubble candles from here to ₹569 Mugs yes · melts need a burner Permanent · depends on hardware The mug suits anybody at all; the melts suit one verified home
₹449 Sandalwood jar candle Yes Roughly 15–18 hours The workhorse for a long list, bought identically
₹379 Misty Mornings, Bookshop, Cozy Corner, Evening Walks Yes Roughly 15–18 hours The floor of what is worth handing over at all
₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml No — it needs an ultrasonic machine Depends on the machine Only someone whose machine you have watched running
The honest caveat: the two empty stretches on this ladder are the useful part. There is nothing between ₹299 and ₹379, and nothing between ₹664 and ₹749 — which is where wax and ceramic end and glass begins. Both gaps sit exactly where buyers like to set round-number ceilings, so a ₹300, ₹500 or ₹700 budget will always be spent slightly off its own mark. Note also that everything here is either a flame, a permanent object or a bottle of oil, and each carries a handling condition: never leave a candle burning unattended, keep fragrance oil away from diyas and any open flame since it is flammable, and stand a diffuser on a tray and out of reach of children and pets. Fragrance adds scent to a room; it does not clean air or remove cooking or smoke smells.

The three steps a small budget actually uses
The SOSA principle
A small budget is almost never fixed by finding a cheaper gift. It is fixed by finding a shorter list.
Twelve at ₹379 is ₹4,548 and six at ₹749 is ₹4,494. The money is the same to within fifty-four rupees; the decision is not the same at all.

Part three — the fragrance axis under ₹849

If the budget reaches the reed range at all, a second decision opens that a small budget rarely gets to make consciously: which composition. All five 50ml bottles are built identically — refillable glass, six fibre reeds, alcohol-free, phthalate-free and paraben-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier, 6–8 weeks of stated life — and they differ only in what is in them. The spread from ₹749 to ₹849 is a hundred rupees, and it is the entire fragrance decision.

The five compositions
What each one is, who it is safe for, and who it is not for
Scent 50ml What is in it Safe for Not for
Garden Bloom ★ ₹799 British rose · night-blooming jasmine A mixed family, several generations, comparing notes Anyone who has said they dislike floral
Morning Freshness ₹749 Malabar lemon · peppermint · Nilgiri eucalyptus The blind buy, and bathrooms, kitchens, home offices Someone wanting warmth rather than brightness
Evening Calm ₹799 Kashmir lavender · chamomile A small flat, a nervous recipient, a reading corner Anyone who associates lavender with a cupboard
Mountain Breeze ₹849 Himalayan pine · sage · Indian cedar People who reject anything obviously "scented" A home that wants warmth — it can read as cold
Fresh Brew ₹849 Coorg coffee · Kerala vanilla Someone you have heard praise coffee or vanilla A blind gift — it is the most polarising of the five
The honest caveat: the range has no oud, no musk-forward composition and no aquatic. If that is what the person wants, we do not make it and I would rather say so than stretch the nearest bottle over the gap. Where SOSA quotes a strength figure — 9.0 for Morning Freshness, 8.9 for Garden Bloom and Evening Calm, 9.4 for Mountain Breeze, 9.5 for Fresh Brew — that is a position on our own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard, not a concentration and not a ranking of quality. Two scents running in one connected space should share a note or you get a seam between them.

Part four — where small budgets actually go wrong

The first failure is variety, and it is the expensive one. Faced with eleven names, the instinct is to choose eleven different things, on the theory that identical gifts look lazy. What identical gifts actually look like is decided, and what eleven different gifts cost is an evening of your life plus eleven separate chances to be wrong. Buying one product eleven times is not a failure of imagination; it is a recognition that you have information about perhaps three of those eleven people. Where the same gift genuinely does look careless is when it was defaulted to rather than chosen — a distinction the recipients can usually feel, and which comes down to whether you can say why that object suits that group.

The second failure is the invisible delivery charge, which quietly taxes exactly the people who can least afford it. Small budgets buy small items, small items sit below the ₹499 free-shipping line, and the natural buying pattern at Diwali — a couple of gifts at a time, as names come to mind — turns one order into six. Ten ₹379 candles bought together come to ₹3,790 and clear the line; the same ten bought in five pairs do not, five times over. This is the least glamorous paragraph in the guide and it is probably the one that saves the most money.

The third failure is buying an object that needs a second object, which I have written about at length elsewhere in this cluster and will summarise once here because it belongs in any complete small-budget guide. Wax melts at ₹474 need a burner; taper candles at ₹569 need a holder; the 15ml Hotel Collection at ₹299 needs an ultrasonic machine such as a Boond ₹899 or a Sukoon ₹1,899. None of the three is included, and nobody will ever tell you they did not go out and buy it. They will thank you at the door and put the packet in a drawer, which is why the same mistake is available to be made again every single year.

Nobody has ever run out of money at Diwali. They have run out of names they were willing to leave off.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part five — what a small budget cannot buy here

A guide that only lists what to purchase is an advertisement, so here is the other half. Below ₹379 there is nothing on our store I would hand to anybody, and the only item under ₹300 is a machine refill. Below ₹749 there is no reed diffuser at all — not in a smaller bottle, not in a cheaper scent, not in any format. Under ₹750 the reed range is one composition deep. The duo sets, which are the nearest thing we make to a set, start at ₹1,498 for two 50ml bottles and are well outside this guide; the 130ml bottles at ₹1,249–₹1,349 are outside it too, and in any case a larger bottle buys duration rather than reach — it lasts 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8 and at six reeds projects the same.

Some things do not exist at any budget, and it would be dishonest to let a small-budget reader assume otherwise. SOSA sells no gift card, no gift hamper, no gift box and no curated gift set. There is no published bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no invoicing arrangement, no custom branding and no stated lead time, and I cannot promise any delivery timing on this page or any other. If you are buying in quantity and need to know something, the honest route is to ask through the contact page before you commit, rather than assuming terms that are not published anywhere. Replacement reeds are not sold separately either — our guidance is to refresh them every few months, and that is a genuine gap in the range rather than an oversight I am hiding.

Part six — the plan, by list length

The whole guide, reduced to arithmetic. One column for the simplest possible approach — the same ₹749 bottle for everybody — and one for the split I would actually make, which is the two-group method applied with real prices. Every figure is arithmetic on our listed prices with the working shown; none of it is a quotation and no quantity term exists to change it.

The small-budget plan
Six list lengths, two approaches, and what the split costs you
Names on the list One SKU for everybody The split I would actually make Split total What the split gives up
5 ★ 5 × ₹749 = ₹3,745 2 × ₹799 = ₹1,598, plus 3 × ₹449 = ₹1,347 ₹2,945 Nothing much — at five names the split is easy to keep discreet
8 8 × ₹749 = ₹5,992 3 × ₹799 = ₹2,397, plus 5 × ₹379 = ₹1,895 ₹4,292 Two visible tiers — keep the groups apart socially
10 10 × ₹749 = ₹7,490 3 × ₹849 = ₹2,547, plus 7 × ₹449 = ₹3,143 ₹5,690 Three named people get a chosen scent; seven get one repeated candle
12 12 × ₹749 = ₹8,988 4 × ₹799 = ₹3,196, plus 8 × ₹379 = ₹3,032 ₹6,228 The candle group is large enough that someone will notice the tier
15 15 × ₹749 = ₹11,235 5 × ₹749 = ₹3,745, plus 10 × ₹379 = ₹3,790 ₹7,535 Decision cost rises — this is the point to consider a shorter list
20 20 × ₹749 = ₹14,980 4 × ₹799 = ₹3,196, plus 16 × ₹379 = ₹6,064 ₹9,260 At twenty, ask honestly whether all twenty names should be there
Honest notes for buyers: every figure above is arithmetic on listed SOSA prices with the working shown — it is not a quotation. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no invoicing arrangement, no branding service and no lead time, sells no gift card, gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set, and no delivery timing is promised anywhere in this guide. For a larger order, ask through the contact page before committing rather than assuming terms that do not exist. The least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 and nothing below it is a reed diffuser in any size; under ₹750 there is one scent, with the other four at ₹799 and ₹849. Wax melts ₹474 need a burner and tapers ₹569 need a holder, neither included; the 15ml Hotel Collection ₹299 needs an ultrasonic machine and never goes into a reed bottle, just as reed oil never goes into a machine. Replacement reeds are not sold separately; refills at ₹2,399 and ₹3,499 are oil only. Free shipping starts above ₹499. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and because fragrance oil is flammable, keep any diffuser well away from diyas, candles and open flame. Stand a diffuser on a tray, since the oil marks wood and stone, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean air or remove cooking or smoke smells. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser 50ml at ₹849, the top of the small-budget ladder
The top of this guide
SOSA Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml
₹849 is where a small budget stops and the reed range is fully open, so it is worth knowing what the last hundred rupees buys. Pine, sage and cedar is dry and woody rather than sweet, and it is the answer for the person who says they dislike scented things — most of the time what they dislike is sweetness, and this is not that. Same build as every bottle in the range: refillable glass, six fibre reeds, 6–8 weeks, nothing to light or plug in, alcohol-free and phthalate-free on a heat-stable CCT base tested through 45°C heat and 85% monsoon humidity. Its 9.4 figure is a position on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard. Its one risk is that in a home wanting warmth it can read as cold.

A note from Sonal

The first Diwali after we launched, I was asked repeatedly for something under ₹300, and for a while I felt the absence as a hole in the range. I sat with the costings more than once looking for a way. There is no way. A bottle of oil that holds up through an Indian summer, in glass, with fibre reeds that do not clog in monsoon humidity, cannot be made for ₹300, and a smaller bottle would only have been a smaller version of the same problem.

So instead of inventing a product I do not have, I started giving people the arithmetic, and the arithmetic works against me at least as often as for me. A great many readers run the sums on this page and conclude that a stack of ₹379 candles is right for their list, and very often it is. What almost nobody concludes, once the figures are written down, is that the plan they arrived with — a large number of names multiplied by a very small ceiling — was the plan they actually wanted.

I am aware that a small-budget page is where a brand is most tempted to flatter the reader, and I have tried not to. Nothing here says that spending more makes you generous or that any gift will be remembered; I have no way of knowing either, and neither does anybody else selling you something this season. What I can give you accurately is the price list, the stated life of each thing, what has to already exist in the recipient's home for it to work, where our range has gaps in it, and what we do not sell at all. Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest SOSA product that is genuinely a gift?
A scented jar candle at ₹379 — Misty Mornings, Bookshop, Cozy Corner or Evening Walks, roughly 15–18 hours each and complete in the jar. The only item below that price is the 15ml Hotel Collection at ₹299, which is a refill for an ultrasonic machine and is not a standalone gift.
Is there a SOSA reed diffuser under ₹749?
No, in any size or scent. ₹749 is a floor rather than a starting point that discounts downward, and under ₹750 there is exactly one composition — Morning Freshness. Garden Bloom and Evening Calm are ₹799; Fresh Brew and Mountain Breeze are ₹849.
Is it acceptable to give the same gift to everyone on my list?
Yes, with one condition: it should be chosen rather than defaulted to, and you should be able to say why that object suits that group. Where people will see each other's gifts — an office, a set of aunts, a building — identical is fairer than assorted, because assorted invites comparison. Where two visible tiers exist, keep the groups socially separate rather than mixing them in one room.
Should I buy 130ml instead of 50ml to make the gift feel bigger?
Only if you want it to last longer, and only if the budget genuinely reaches ₹1,249–₹1,349. A 130ml runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8, but at six reeds it projects into the room the same as a 50ml. Size buys duration, not reach, and on a small budget two 50ml bottles for two people do more than one 130ml for one.
How much does the ₹499 free-shipping line actually matter?
Most at the bottom of the range, because that is where individual items fail to clear it. A single ₹379 candle carries a delivery charge; ten in one basket come to ₹3,790 and do not. The rule is to decide the whole list first and place one order, which is worth more on a small budget than any choice between two similar products.
Does SOSA offer any bulk pricing for a longer Diwali list?
No. There is no published bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no invoicing arrangement, no branding service and no stated lead time, and no gift card, hamper, box or curated set at any price. Every total in this guide is arithmetic on the listed prices. If you have a question about a larger order, ask through the contact page before committing rather than assuming terms that are not published.
