Founder Diaries · Diwali Gifting · Repeat Gifting
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Two things about the refill are true simultaneously, and most pages about it only tell you one. Three hundred millilitres of reed oil at ₹2,399 is roughly ₹8 per millilitre against ₹15–17 for a 50ml bottle — it is the best value in our entire range. It is also a plain bottle of oil with no glass vessel and no reeds in the box, and it is a poor thing to hand somebody in a doorway. Whether it is the right Diwali gift depends almost entirely on two facts you either know or do not: that they still have the vessel, and that the reeds in it are not a year old. This page is the arithmetic, the honest gap, and the four situations where I would send one anyway.
Quick answers — read this first
The value case, in numbers: 300ml for ₹2,399 is 2,399 ÷ 300 ≈ ₹8 per ml. A 50ml bottle at ₹799 is ₹16 per ml. Six 50ml bottles hold the same 300ml of oil and cost 6 × ₹799 = ₹4,794, so the refill saves ₹4,794 − ₹2,399 = ₹2,395 on identical oil.

What is not in the box: no glass vessel and no reeds. SOSA does not sell replacement reeds as a separate item — that is a real gap in the range, and it means the refill assumes a vessel and a set of reeds that are still fit to use.

The fix that makes it a gift: send the refill with a new 50ml. ₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148. Oil for most of a year, six fresh fibre reeds, and something that actually opens like a present.

When not to: if you have never seen inside their home, if they will unwrap it in front of a room, or if last year's bottle was never finished. In all three, a 50ml at ₹799 is the better gift at a third of the price.
The short answer
Short answer: gift the refill only to somebody whose vessel you have seen, and pair it with a 50ml bottle so fresh reeds arrive alongside the oil. 300ml is ₹2,399 and runs roughly 8–11 months; 500ml is ₹3,499 and runs 14–18 months. To anyone else, a new bottle at ₹749–₹849 is the better gift, because it contains everything needed to work on the day it arrives.
How a refill works: lift the reeds out, pour the oil into the existing bottle up to the neck, put the reeds back, and flip them once so both ends are coated. Use gloves, stand the bottle on a tray because the oil marks wood and stone, and keep it away from children, pets and any open flame. The reeds are the part that wears out; our guidance is to refresh them every few months.
Straight answer
Should you give a reed diffuser refill as a Diwali gift instead of a new bottle?
1. Only if you know they still have the vessel. The 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is oil and nothing else. No glass bottle, no reeds. Sent to somebody who finished their diffuser and recycled the bottle, it is 300ml of fragrance oil with nowhere to go.

2. The value is genuinely exceptional, and the arithmetic is worth doing. 2,399 ÷ 300 ≈ ₹8 per ml. A 50ml bottle at ₹799 works out at ₹16 per ml and at ₹849 nearly ₹17. Six 50ml bottles carry the same 300ml and cost 6 × ₹799 = ₹4,794 — the refill is ₹2,395 less for identical oil. The 500ml at ₹3,499 is about ₹7 per ml and runs 14–18 months.

3. The reeds are the honest problem, not the vessel. Fibre reeds fill up over months of use, and SOSA does not sell replacement reeds as a separate item. Our guidance is to refresh them every few months, and the only route to fresh reeds is a new bottle, which comes with six. A refill given a year after the original therefore lands on tired reeds.

4. So the version I would actually send is a refill plus a new 50ml. ₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148. That gives oil for most of a year, six fresh fibre reeds to run it through, and a second scent for another room. It also fixes the opening problem, because one of the two things in the parcel looks like a present.

5. As an object to unwrap, a refill is poor, and that matters more at Diwali than at any other time. Gifts are opened in company, compared, and handed over in doorways. A large plain bottle of oil reads as a supply order — which is exactly what it is, and exactly what some recipients want. Know which kind of person you are buying for.

6. If in doubt, buy a bottle rather than oil. A 50ml at ₹799 costs a third as much, contains everything needed to work on the day it arrives, and has no preconditions at all. There is no situation where it is embarrassing.

7. Never plan a gift around buying reeds on their own. They are not sold that way, and I would rather state the gap plainly than let you discover it at checkout.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: the 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is roughly ₹8 per ml against ₹15–17 for a 50ml — outstanding value, and oil only: no vessel, no reeds, and reeds are not sold separately. Give it where you have seen the vessel kept, ideally with a 50ml at ₹749 alongside for fresh reeds (₹3,148 together). Otherwise buy a bottle.
SOSA reed diffuser oil refill 300ml at ₹2,399, oil only with no vessel or reeds included
The best rupee in the range, with a condition attached
SOSA reed diffuser refill · oil only ₹2,399 / 300ml
Three hundred millilitres of the same composition that goes into our 50ml and 130ml bottles, at roughly ₹8 per millilitre against ₹15–17 in the smallest size, and running about 8–11 months in a bottle you already own. What arrives is oil. No glass vessel, no reeds, no packaging pretending to be a gift box. That is deliberate — you reuse your own vessel, which is the point of a refillable product — but it means the gift has a precondition rather than being self-contained. 500ml is ₹3,499, about ₹7 per ml, and runs 14–18 months. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free and paraben-free on a heat-stable CCT base.

Part one — value, contents and the moment of opening

Three separate questions get muddled into one whenever a refill is considered as a gift, and they have different answers. Is it good value? Unambiguously yes. Does it contain everything needed to work? No. Does it open like a present? Not remotely. A sensible decision needs all three answered, in that order, because the first one is so persuasive that people stop before reaching the other two.

1
THE FIRST QUESTION · VALUE
Per millilitre, nothing else we sell comes close
Do the division rather than trusting the impression. The 300ml refill at ₹2,399 works out at 2,399 ÷ 300 ≈ ₹8 per ml. A 50ml bottle at ₹749 is ₹15 per ml; at ₹849 it is nearly ₹17. The 130ml sizes sit in between at roughly ₹10 per ml. Put another way: six 50ml bottles hold the same 300ml of oil and cost 6 × ₹799 = ₹4,794, so the refill delivers identical oil for ₹2,395 less. The 500ml at ₹3,499 goes further still, about ₹7 per ml, and runs 14–18 months against 8–11 for the 300ml. What you are not paying for in a refill is glass, reeds and a box — which is the whole saving, and also the whole catch.
The figures: refill ≈ ₹7–8 per ml · 130ml ≈ ₹10 per ml · 50ml ≈ ₹15–17 per ml.
2
THE SECOND QUESTION · CONTENTS
The reeds, not the bottle, are the part you cannot replace
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, which arrives with six fresh fibre reedsMorning Freshness₹749 · 50mlMost people assume the missing piece is the glass, and glass is easy — anybody who liked their diffuser has kept it. The real gap is that SOSA does not sell replacement reeds as a separate item. Fibre reeds — fibre rather than rattan, because rattan's pores clog in Indian humidity — fill up over months of use, and our guidance is to refresh them every few months. The only place fresh reeds exist is inside a new bottle, six at a time. So a refill given twelve months after the original bottle is a year of excellent oil poured through reeds that are past their working life, and the room will not smell the way the arithmetic promises. It is an honest gap in our range and I would rather name it here than have you meet it after the parcel arrives.
The fix: ₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148. Oil, plus a bottle that carries six fresh reeds and a second scent.
3
THE THIRD QUESTION · THE OPENING
A gift is partly a moment, and a refill has no moment in it
This is the part that is uncomfortable to write on a page selling the thing. Diwali gifts are handed over in company, opened in front of other people and quietly compared. A large plain bottle of oil reads as a supply order — because it is one. There is no shape to it, nothing to look at, and the recipient has to already understand the value to appreciate what they have been given. For a mother-in-law who runs three bottles and thinks about the cost of oil, that is fine and possibly ideal. For a colleague, a neighbour, a bhabhi you are still working out, or anyone in a group where gifts are visibly measured against each other, it is the wrong object regardless of what it cost you. SOSA sells no gift box and no gift wrap, so there is no dressing this up; the honest options are to pair it or to buy something else.

Part two — every route to the same oil, costed

Here is every way to put SOSA reed oil into somebody's home, with the price per millilitre worked out and the honest verdict on each as a gift rather than as a purchase. All divisions are on listed prices and rounded; there is no package or bundle behind any of these rows.

Routes to the same fragrance
What arrives, what it costs per millilitre, and how it lands as a gift
Route What arrives in the box Cost Roughly per ml How long it runs
300ml refill plus a 50ml bottle ★ Oil, a glass bottle, six fresh reeds, two scents ₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148 ≈ ₹9 8–11 months, plus 6–8 weeks in the new bottle
300ml refill alone Oil only — no vessel, no reeds ₹2,399 ≈ ₹8 8–11 months
500ml refill alone Oil only — no vessel, no reeds ₹3,499 ≈ ₹7 14–18 months
Six 50ml bottles, the same 300ml of oil Six vessels, thirty-six reeds, up to five scents 6 × ₹799 = ₹4,794 ≈ ₹16 6–8 weeks each, run one at a time
One 130ml bottle Vessel, six reeds, one scent ₹1,249–₹1,349 ≈ ₹10 14–18 weeks
One 50ml bottle Vessel, six reeds, one scent — complete on its own ₹749–₹849 ≈ ₹15–17 6–8 weeks
A duo, 2 × 50ml Two vessels, twelve reeds, two scents, two rooms ₹1,498–₹1,598 ≈ ₹15–16 6–8 weeks each
The honest caveat: the per-millilitre column is the wrong column to buy on if the gift has to look like a gift. The bottom four rows cost two to three times as much per ml and every one of them arrives complete, wrapped in nothing but sealed and self-explanatory. The top three rows are cheaper fragrance and worse presents. Which column matters depends entirely on the recipient, and no amount of arithmetic decides it for you.

The refill, the fix, and the alternative
The SOSA principle
A refill is the cheapest fragrance we sell and one of the hardest things to give. Value per millilitre and value as a gift are different currencies, and the refill is rich in one and poor in the other.
Which is why the pairing exists: ₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148 buys the arithmetic and the object at the same time.

Part three — where the refill is the wrong gift

The refill has one precondition and several failure modes, and they are worth stating before the case in its favour. The precondition is a kept vessel with usable reeds in it, and you can only know that by having seen it. Vessels get recycled the moment a bottle finishes, particularly in small flats where nothing is stored on speculation. If you are working from a memory of a gift you sent by courier eighteen months ago, you do not know, and a ₹2,399 gift resting on an assumption is a poor trade against a ₹799 bottle that rests on nothing.

The second failure is social rather than practical. Diwali gifts are opened in front of people and compared, sometimes explicitly, more often not. A refill spends a lot of money in a way that is invisible — the recipient sees a plain bottle and would have to do the arithmetic to know what it was worth. That is a genuine drawback in any group where gifts sit side by side: a set of aunts, an office, a floor of neighbours. Where several people will see each other's gifts, give them the same visible thing and keep the refill for the private, practical relationships where nobody is measuring. A duo at ₹1,598 costs less than a refill and reads as considerably more, which tells you something about how gifts are actually assessed.

The third failure is the quiet one: sending oil into a home where the first bottle never finished. If last year's diffuser is still half full, the household did not engage with it — the bottle stood in dead air, or nobody in that house notices ambient fragrance — and 300ml of oil compounds the misjudgement eightfold. And there is a small practical warning that belongs on any page about refilling. The oil marks wood and stone, so the bottle should stand on a tray; use gloves when handling reeds; keep it away from children and pets; and because fragrance oil is flammable, keep the bottle well clear of diyas, candles and any open flame during the festival. None of that is a reason not to give one. It is a reason to know who you are giving it to.

The refill is the only thing I sell that is worth more than it looks. At Diwali, that is not always an advantage.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — who it is genuinely right for

Six recipients, sorted by the only thing that actually decides this — whether you know the vessel is there. The totals shown are simple addition on listed prices; there is no set, no bundle and no gift packaging behind any of them.

The refill decision
Six recipients, and whether oil or a bottle is the right gift
The recipient Do you know the vessel is still there? What to give Total
Someone you gave a diffuser to, whose shelf you have seen ★ Yes, and you saw the reeds too 300ml refill with a 50ml for fresh reeds ₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148
A household running two or three bottles constantly Yes — several, visibly in use 500ml refill, 14–18 months of not thinking about it ₹3,499
A practical person who dislikes ceremony around gifts Yes The 300ml refill alone. They will appreciate the arithmetic ₹2,399
Someone who owns a diffuser from another brand The vessel yes, the reeds no Not oil. A 50ml at ₹799 — our oil is made for our vessel and our fibre reeds ₹799
Anyone whose home you have never been inside No, and no amount of guessing changes that A 50ml at ₹749 — complete, self-explanatory, no preconditions ₹749
Someone in a group where gifts are compared Irrelevant — the problem is visibility, not the vessel A Warmth & Bloom duo, the same one for everybody in the group ₹1,598 each
Honest notes for buyers: the refill is oil only — no glass vessel and no reeds — and replacement reeds are not sold separately, so never plan a gift around buying reeds on their own; fresh reeds arrive only inside a new bottle. Per-millilitre figures are division on listed prices, rounded, and duration figures are typical rather than guaranteed. Combined totals are arithmetic, not packages: SOSA sells no gift card, gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set, publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity and no lead time, and I cannot promise any delivery timing — for a larger order, ask through the contact page before committing. The least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749. Reed oil never goes into an ultrasonic machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Free shipping starts at ₹499. Fragrance oil is flammable: keep any bottle well away from diyas, candles and open flame, stand it on a tray because the oil marks wood and stone, and keep it away from children and pets. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean air or remove cooking or smoke smells. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo, two 50ml bottles at ₹1,598
When the gift has to look like a gift
SOSA Warmth & Bloom duo · Fresh Brew + Garden Bloom ₹1,598 / 2 × 50ml
Cheaper than a 300ml refill and considerably more legible as a present, which is the trade this page is really about. Two 50ml bottles, twelve fibre reeds, two scents that meet on warmth and soft musk so they can share a connected space without a seam. Every precondition the refill carries, this carries none of — it works on the day it arrives, in a home that owns nothing of ours. Day & Night is ₹1,498 and Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548; the 2 × 130ml versions are ₹2,498–₹2,598. Refillable glass, so it becomes the vessel a future refill needs.

A note from Sonal

We made the refill because customers asked for it, and because a glass bottle you throw away after eight weeks is a poor piece of design. It is the product I am most pleased with commercially and the one I am most careful about recommending as a gift, which is an odd position for a founder to hold in public. The reason is the reeds. We do not sell them separately, so the refill quietly assumes something we have not supplied a way to guarantee.

I have thought about listing reeds on their own. It is not a settled question and I will not pretend the gap is a design choice — it is a gap. Until it is closed, the honest instruction is the one in this page: pair the oil with a bottle, or give the bottle instead. That costs the customer more than the refill alone, which is the opposite of what a shop page usually tells you, and it is still the right advice.

What I will not do is tell you a refill will be appreciated because it shows you were paying attention. Perhaps it will; I have no way of knowing how any gift is received and I do not think anybody does. What I can give you is the division — ₹8 a millilitre against ₹15 to ₹17 — the exact contents of the box, and the three situations where I would buy something else. Everything is made in Pune in small batches, and part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Does a SOSA refill include reeds or a bottle?
No. It is oil only — 300ml at ₹2,399 or 500ml at ₹3,499 — and neither the glass vessel nor the fibre reeds are in the box. Replacement reeds are also not sold as a separate item, so the only way fresh reeds arrive is inside a new bottle. That is why pairing the refill with a 50ml (₹2,399 + ₹749 = ₹3,148) is the version I recommend as a gift.
How much cheaper is a refill, exactly?
300ml at ₹2,399 is 2,399 ÷ 300 ≈ ₹8 per millilitre. A 50ml bottle at ₹799 is ₹16 per millilitre, and at ₹849 nearly ₹17. Six 50ml bottles hold the same 300ml and cost 6 × ₹799 = ₹4,794, so the refill is ₹2,395 less for the same oil — with the difference being that those six bottles arrive with six vessels and thirty-six reeds and the refill arrives with none.
How do you actually refill a reed diffuser?
Lift the reeds out and set them aside, pour the oil into the bottle up to the neck, return the reeds, and flip them once so both ends are coated. Wear gloves, work over something you do not mind marking, and stand the finished bottle on a tray — the oil marks wood and stone. Keep it away from children, pets and any open flame.
Can I refill a diffuser bottle from another brand with SOSA oil?
Our oil is composed for our own vessels and our fibre reeds, and I cannot vouch for how it behaves in another maker's bottle or through reeds we did not supply. For a gift, that uncertainty is not worth carrying — a 50ml at ₹799 arrives complete and removes the question entirely.
Is a refill an appropriate gift for someone senior, or for a colleague?
Usually not, and the reason is presentation rather than value. A plain bottle of oil reads as a supply order in a setting where gifts are opened in company and compared, and SOSA sells no gift box or wrap to soften that. For those relationships a duo at ₹1,498 or a 50ml at ₹799 is the better object, even though both are worse value per millilitre.
