Why is a scented candle wrong at the dining table? Because taste is largely smell, so an ambient register at the table competes directly with the food. It also puts a flame among napkins and decorations, which is a separate reason to move it.
What is the fix for an echoing room? Soft, irregular material: rugs, curtains, upholstered seating, books. It fixes the acoustics and gives the room the reserve that holds fragrance as a steady background rather than a spike.
Six errors, and five of them are additions
The sensory failures in expensive homes are remarkably consistent, and the pattern in them is instructive: five of the six are things somebody added, and only one is something left out. Take them in order of how often they occur. The first is the hard room, and it is the most common of all in contemporary Indian interiors. Stone or tile floors, large areas of glass, high or double-height ceilings, minimal soft furnishing, a few sculptural pieces. Photographically excellent. Acoustically hostile. A room like this has a long reverberation time, which makes conversation effortful, makes television unintelligible or too loud, and produces a low-level tension in everybody present that almost nobody attributes to sound. It has a second consequence that matters here: it holds no fragrance reserve. Soft materials absorb fragrance and give it back slowly, which is what converts a released dose into a steady background. A hard room has nothing to do that job, so fragrance in it rises quickly and disappears quickly, and the usual response is to increase the dose, which produces a room that is briefly overwhelming and then empty. The single fix for both problems is material: rugs, curtains, upholstered seating, books, anything soft and irregular. The second error is lighting, and specifically too much of it, too white, and too high up. A great many expensive rooms are lit as though they were being photographed rather than lived in. Overhead sources at high output and cool colour temperature flatten a space and make the materials that cost the most look cheapest. Several low warm sources at seven in the evening will do more for a room than any single purchase in it. The third is competing fragrances, and it is the error that most reliably defeats the money spent on fragrance. Most homes contain four or five registers, of which one was chosen. Scented floor cleaner is applied to the largest surface in the house. Scented detergent and fabric conditioner sit on every textile, which is to say on the curtains, upholstery and bedding that hold and release whatever the house smells of. Dishwashing liquid is a fragrance in the room that should have none. A room spray lives in a cupboard for emergencies. Two or three unrelated candles arrived as gifts. Together these overwhelm any deliberate choice, and in a surprising number of homes the strongest smell in the building is the floor cleaner. Moving to unscented cleaning products does more for a house than any purchase. The fourth is the scented candle on the dining table, which is so common that it deserves naming individually. Taste is very largely smell. An ambient register at the table competes directly with food that somebody spent the afternoon preparing, and the better the fragrance, the more damage it does. There is a safety argument alongside the culinary one: a flame in the middle of a table surrounded by napkins, paper decorations and reaching arms is a poor arrangement, and candles should in any case be kept clear of curtains, dupattas and paper, never left unattended, and never left burning overnight. Put the candle elsewhere, or use it before people sit down. The fifth is using fragrance to cover a cause rather than fixing it. A kitchen whose extraction is not used, a bathroom whose drain trap has dried out, a wardrobe that has been damp. Adding fragrance to any of these produces a two-part smell that anybody arriving reads instantly and correctly, and it signals the opposite of the care it was meant to demonstrate. Fix the cause: use the extraction every time, pour a mug of water down unused drains, dry and clean the cupboard. The sixth is procedural and it is the one that quietly ruins otherwise well-run homes. The fragrance level gets set in the evening, by somebody who has been in the house all day and has therefore adapted and perceives almost none of it. Their judgement, honestly made, will always be that more is needed. Set the level instead on a day you have just come in from outside, which is the only accurate reading anybody gets, and then leave it alone rather than adjusting it by feel.
What to undo
What to undo, and what to keep. Undo first, at no cost: replace scented floor cleaner, detergent and fabric conditioner with unscented or low-scented ones, retire the emergency room spray, and remove candles that belong to no register you chose. Add soft material to any hard echoing room, since it fixes the acoustics and gives the room the reserve that holds fragrance steadily. Move any candle off the dining table, and keep flames clear of curtains, dupattas, paper decorations and anything flammable, never unattended and never left burning overnight. Then what to keep. The threshold: a reed diffuser from Rs 749 or the SOSA Boond at Rs 799, running continuously. Bathrooms: a reed - Morning Freshness at Rs 749, Garden Bloom at Rs 799, Evening Calm at Rs 799, Fresh Brew at Rs 849, Mountain Breeze at Rs 849 - three to four months per bottle, refills at Rs 2,399 for 300ml and Rs 3,499 for 500ml. The connected living volume, at a low setting on two short cycles: the SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 - waterless, coverage up to 1,000 m², Bluetooth app and timer control - the SOSA Megh at Rs 3,499 with a 6L tank, or the SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,799. Fragrances: Hotel Collection at Rs 299 for 15ml, Rs 999 for 100ml and Rs 1,799 for 300ml, at three to six drops per tank, rinsing between scents. Set the level on a day you have just come in from outside, never in the evening. Fix causes rather than covering them: extraction over the hob every time, a mug of water down unused drain traps, damp cupboards dried and cleaned. Never scented: the kitchen at any time, the dining area, children's rooms, and covered terraces and balconies. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards.

The correct layering order is in the multi-sensory chapter, restraint is in the expensive chapter, and consistency is in the signature chapter. Everything gathers in the sensory guide.

Versailles
Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.
And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
