Because reach comes from the exposed surface of the reeds and from nothing else in the bottle. The oil sitting below the neck is a reservoir, and a reservoir is a duration control rather than a distance control.
Quick answers — read this first
Why can I smell my reed diffuser at reception but not across the clinic? Because the whole engine of a reed diffuser is the wet surface standing above the neck, and there is very little of it. Six fibre reeds of around 3.5mm diameter with 18cm exposed present roughly 20 square centimetres each, so about 120 in total - a playing card, counting both faces. That surface evaporates into a reception of, say, 200 sq ft at a 3.05 m ceiling: 200 × 3.05 × 0.0929, about 57 cubic metres or 57,000 litres of air. Enough for that room, and never going to be enough for the next one.
Will a bigger bottle reach further? No. It will last longer. A 50ml runs 6-8 weeks and a 130ml runs 14-18, and both present the same six reeds to the same room at the same rate. The extra oil sits below the neck waiting its turn, contributing nothing to the far end of your clinic today. This is the most common upgrade people make when a reed falls short, and it changes nothing about the problem they were trying to solve.
What should I do instead? Two things in order, and the first is free. Stand all six reeds rather than three, which roughly doubles the evaporating surface and is the only dial the format has. Then wait a fortnight, because reeds saturate slowly and the level rises through the first two weeks. If the far end is still empty, you have reached the ceiling of a passive source and the next step is an active one - the Sukoon at ₹1,899 or the Vaayu at ₹11,999, sized to the volume.
The short answer
Short answer: Because a reed diffuser's output comes entirely from the wet surface exposed above the neck, and six reeds amount to roughly 120 square centimetres of it. That is enough to hold one reception of about 57 cubic metres and nothing further. A larger bottle adds duration, not distance - 50ml runs 6-8 weeks and 130ml runs 14-18 at the same rate. The fix is more reeds first, then an active machine.
The pick: stand all six reeds in the bottle you already own, and if the far end is still empty a fortnight later, the SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 or the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, sized to the volume.
Next step: tell us the distance from the bottle to the place it fails and the ceiling height along the way, and we will say whether reeds can close it - ask for a clinic scenting plan.
Why does a reed diffuser work at reception but fail to carry across the rest of the clinic?
Because the entire output of a reed diffuser comes from the wet surface standing above the neck of the bottle, and there is remarkably little of it. Do the sum. A fibre reed is roughly 3.5mm across, and the part standing clear of the glass is around 18 centimetres. The exposed surface of one reed is therefore about 20 square centimetres, and six of them come to roughly 120 square centimetres - about the area of a playing card counting both faces. That is your whole engine. Now the room it is working into. A reception of 200 square feet at a 3.05 metre ceiling is 200 × 3.05 × 0.0929, or about 57 cubic metres, which is 57,000 litres of air. A playing card of wet fibre can hold a low, steady, convincing level in 57,000 litres, and that is what yours is doing. It was never going to hold the next 30 cubic metres of corridor as well. Here is the part that costs people money. The instinct when a reed falls short is to buy more oil, and it is the wrong instinct, because the reservoir is a calendar and not a range. A 50ml bottle runs 6-8 weeks and a 130ml runs 14-18. That is two and a half times the oil for a little over twice the duration, at precisely the same daily output, because both bottles present the same six reeds. The same is true of the 300ml refill at ₹2,399: bought for months, not metres, and sold as oil only. What you should actually do, in order: stand all six reeds instead of three, which roughly doubles the surface and is the only dial the format has; give it a fortnight, because reeds saturate slowly and the level climbs through the first two weeks; and check the placement, since a bottle in a doorway or under an air-conditioning draught is emptying into a corridor rather than into your room. If the far end is still empty, you have found the ceiling of a passive source. A machine does something a reed physically cannot: it breaks the oil into a fine mist and pushes it out with air, adding energy the bottle never had. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 or the Vaayu at ₹11,999 are the two rungs, chosen by volume rather than by frustration. Fragrance here is an ambience decision like lighting, seating or flooring, it works alongside your ventilation and cleaning rather than instead of them, SOSA products are not medical devices, we make no claim that scenting affects bookings, retention or spend, adjustment and treatment rooms stay unscented, and the clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan.
Six reeds are about 120 square centimetres of wet surface working into 57,000 litres of air. That holds one reception and nothing past it. More reeds first, then a machine - a larger bottle only changes the reorder date.
Stand all six reeds before you spend anything. If that fails, the SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 or the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, chosen by cubic metres rather than by how annoyed the corridor has made you.
This is not a page about a better fragrance. The oils are not the variable and never were. It is a page about whether the source has any energy of its own, and these two have it while a bottle does not.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser at ₹11,999 rated to 1000m³. It atomises undiluted oil and discharges it with air, so distribution does not depend on the room happening to move. Wall or HVAC mountable, timers, adjustable intensity, key-lock, 400ml at 90+ days.
HVAC nebulising diffuser at ₹25,999, rated to 3,000m³ or roughly 8,000-10,000 sq ft, 800ml reservoir, programmable schedules. Not a clinic answer in normal circumstances, and listed so the top of the ladder is visible from the bottom of it.
₹11,999, 1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), waterless nebulisation of undiluted oil with no water and no heat, 400ml tank lasting 90+ days, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, key-lock, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount. CE, RoHS and SGS are electrical and compliance marks, not medical approval. Made in India.
Not one of these is a fault in the product. A reed diffuser is doing exactly what a reed diffuser does, and the mechanism is worth understanding precisely so that the money goes to the right place.

Limit one
The engine is a playing card of wet fibre
Everything a reed diffuser emits leaves from the surface of the reeds standing above the neck. A fibre reed about 3.5mm in diameter with 18 centimetres exposed offers roughly 20 square centimetres, so six of them give you about 120 - both faces of a playing card, in total, for the whole clinic. Evaporation from that surface is slow and steady, which is why a reed is so good at the job it is good at: a low, unchanging level in one room, with no plug, no tank and no noise. Fibre is used rather than rattan because it wicks more reliably in Indian humidity, and the range is tested at 45°C and 85% relative humidity. But no material choice changes the area, and the area is the output.
Tip: Soak new reeds for an hour before the first flip and flip weekly with gloves. An unsaturated reed is a smaller engine still.
A machine replaces surface area with air movement. The Vaayu nebulises and discharges rather than waiting for the room to come and collect.
The bottle is a calendar and the reeds are the dial
The two numbers that matter are separate and they are easy to confuse. Bottle size sets how long you go before reordering: 50ml is 6-8 weeks, 130ml is 14-18, and a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is several months of a small clinic. Reed count sets how much comes out per day, because it sets the exposed area. Three reeds is roughly half the output of six. That is the whole control system, and the useful consequence is that your intensity dial is free and reversible - add a reed on Monday, take it out on Friday. What you cannot do is buy distance. The 80ml difference between the two bottles is oil below the neck, and oil below the neck is not evaporating into anything.
An adjustable intensity setting and a key-lock is what a real dial looks like. The Vaayu has both, and a bottle has a fistful of sticks.
The near end runs out of headroom before the far end fills
This is the honest ceiling and it is why more reeds only takes you so far. Concentration falls off with distance from the source, so raising the output raises the whole curve rather than flattening it. If reception reads correctly at six reeds and the corridor reads as nothing, the output needed to make the corridor detectable would put reception well above the point where a client can name the fragrance - and identification is the failure condition in a clinic. The near end hits its limit first, and it is a limit you set for good reasons. A passive source cannot fix a far end. That is not a question of buying a better one; it is a property of having no energy of your own.
Tip: Set the level standing at the desk and at the far chair on the same afternoon. If the two readings cannot both be right, you have found the ceiling rather than a fault.
Mounting is how an active source flattens the curve rather than raising it. The Vaayu can be placed where the air moves instead of where the shelf is.
A reed diffuser has exactly one dial and it is the number of reeds standing in the neck. Everything else in the bottle is a calendar.
Which is why the upgrade people reach for - more oil - is the one change that provably alters nothing about the problem.
Where the energy comes from: waterless nebulisation of undiluted oil, discharged with air rather than evaporated from a stick and left to the room's own currents.
These are the four things people do when a reed stops short, in the order I would try them. Two are free, one is a purchase and one is a waste.
The SOSA plan
Four responses to a reed that stops short, and what each actually changes
What you were about to try
What it changes, and what it does not
Stand all six reeds instead of three
Roughly doubles the evaporating surface and therefore the output. Free, reversible, and the correct first move. Give it a fortnight before judging - reeds saturate slowly. View →
Move the bottle out of the doorway or the AC draught
Often the whole fix. A source in a doorway is emptying into the corridor beyond, and one sitting under a supply vent is having its output shredded and carried somewhere you are not standing. Free.
Buy a 130ml bottle instead of the 50ml
Changes the reorder date from every 6-8 weeks to every 14-18 and nothing else. Same six reeds, same daily output, same distance. Worth doing for convenience, worthless as a fix.
Move to an active machine sized to the volume
The real answer once the reeds are all standing and the placement is right. The Sukoon at ₹1,899 for a small zone, the Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a large one, chosen by cubic metres. View →
The reason a second bottle at the far end makes the room worse rather than better is argued in one machine against multiple zones, the way your air conditioning either carries or destroys whatever you install is in central AC and fragrance distribution, and the four honest reasons to move to an active machine at all are in when a clinic needs an active waterless machine. SOSA makes no health, therapeutic or wellbeing claim of any kind, and no claim that scenting affects bookings, retention or spend.
The physical difference in one line: a reed waits for the room to move air past it, and a nebuliser moves the air itself. Everything else on the specification sheet follows from that.
A reed remains the right product for one room at a low level, which is most chiropractic receptions. These are the rungs for the clinic that has genuinely outgrown it. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA size ladder
Where the passive format ends and an active one begins
Between a bottle and the Vaayu sits the Sukoon at ₹1,899 for a zone of 270-320 sq ft, which is ultrasonic and so adds a little humidity and needs a tank routine. Two honest gaps: SOSA sells no stronger reed oil - the refills at ₹2,399 for 300ml are the same oil in more of it, sold as oil only with glass and reeds separate - and SOSA makes no room spray at all, since every spray in the range is a car product. Fragrance is an ambience decision like lighting or seating, with no health, therapeutic or clinical claim of any kind. It works alongside your ventilation, cleaning and clinical protocol, never instead of them, and SOSA products are not medical devices. Adjustment and treatment rooms stay unscented, staff must be able to stop the source within seconds, and the clinician's judgement overrides any plan. Ask for a clinic scenting plan.

A note from Sonal
I get asked for a stronger oil about once a fortnight and I have never had one to sell. It is a reasonable request and it rests on a reasonable model of how the thing works - fuel in the tank, more fuel goes further. A reed diffuser is not that. It is a wick with a puddle underneath it, and the wick is the entire machine. The puddle only decides when you next reach for your card.
What I like about this particular disappointment is that the first correction is free and it works often enough to be worth insisting on. Stand the other three reeds. Move the bottle out of the doorway. Wait two weeks rather than two days, because a dry reed climbs slowly and most people judge on day three. A meaningful share of the clinics that write to me about reach never buy anything, and I would rather that than sell a machine to a room that had three sticks lying in a drawer.
When the reeds are all up and the corridor is still empty, that is real and the answer is a different kind of source. We make no health, therapeutic or clinical claim of any kind and no claim that scenting affects bookings, retention or spend. Fragrance is an ambience decision, like lighting or seating. Treatment rooms stay unscented, staff must be able to stop the source in seconds, and the clinician's judgement overrides any plan. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I smell my reed at the desk but not ten metres away?
Because concentration falls off with distance and a reed has no way of pushing against that. Six reeds present roughly 120 square centimetres of evaporating surface, enough to hold a low level in one room of around 57 cubic metres. Ten metres away you are relying on the room's own air movement, and in most clinics that movement is slight.
Will a 130ml bottle reach further than a 50ml one?
No. It runs 14-18 weeks instead of 6-8 and puts out at the same rate while it does, because both present the same six reeds. Buy the larger bottle if you are tired of reordering. Do not buy it expecting to hear from the corridor, because the extra oil sits below the neck contributing nothing until the reeds work their way down to it.
Does SOSA sell a stronger reed diffuser oil?
No. The refills are the same oil in a larger quantity - 300ml at ₹2,399 and 500ml at ₹3,499, sold as oil only with glass and reeds separate. Concentration is not the variable limiting reach; exposed surface and air movement are. A stronger oil on the same six reeds would mostly change the near end, which is already correct.
Will standing all six reeds make the fragrance travel further?
It will make everything stronger, including the far end, but the near end rises with it. That is the trade. If reception is already at the right level, doubling the output to reach the corridor pushes the desk past the point where a client could name the fragrance, and identification is the failure condition in a clinic. Try it and judge from both ends.
Can I put a second bottle at the far end of the corridor?
In one connected volume I would not. Two sources produce two gradients that compete rather than a single level you can describe, and the middle band ends up stronger than either was meant to be. A second bottle is fair only in a genuinely separate volume - another floor, or a room behind a door that is actually shut.
The top of the ladder, for context: the SOSA Angaan at ₹25,999 is rated to 3,000 cubic metres. It is the same nebulising principle as the Vaayu, connected to a building's air handling rather than to a room.
SOSA — Clinic Scentingwhy a reed stops where it stops
Six reeds are about 120 square centimetres of wet fibre serving roughly 57,000 litres of air, which holds one reception and nothing beyond it. Stand all six, move the bottle out of the draught, wait a fortnight, and only then consider a machine sized to the volume. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
