Nearly every letter like this arrives with the same shape: a list of bottles that did not work, and then a worry that the problem is the person rather than the bottles. The bottles have a great deal in common with each other, and that is worth knowing before you buy anything else.
Quick answers — read this first
What do most women's perfumes actually have in common? One accord, repeated with different bottles around it: a fruit on top, a flower in the middle, and vanilla, tonka, caramel or amber in the base. That is the structure you have been handed over and over, and it got repeated for commercial reasons - the sweet materials are inexpensive relative to what they do, they test well in a ninety-second sniff at a counter, and they survive on skin for hours. Repeat that arrangement for thirty years and the accord starts to look like the category it was only ever sold in.

Which SOSA products are wrong for me, then? Named plainly, because the ruling out is the useful half. Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka - which is the accord you have just described, built in our own range. On our perfume line, Chashni is a sweet fruity-gourmand and Zaffran is a saffron sweet-amber, and both are what you are walking away from. The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, the three heaviest attars we make, and it does not include Adaa.

So what do I buy, and what does it cost? Two candidates, and the difference between them is one note. SOSA Nawaab, 3ml, ₹399 is the only one of our four attars with no floral note anywhere in it: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. SOSA Adaa, 3ml, ₹379 is the lightest thing we make and carries jasmine sambac in a supporting role. Buy one 3ml, not both and not the trio - the 3ml is our sample size, since we sell no sampler.
The short answer
Short answer: what you have most likely ruled out is an accord rather than a category. The mainstream women's shelf is largely fruit on top, a flower in the middle and vanilla, tonka, caramel or amber in the base, and that arrangement was repeated for commercial reasons. At SOSA the two bottles left standing are Nawaab, the only one of our four attars with no floral note, at ₹399 for 3ml, and Adaa at ₹379, which carries jasmine sambac. Mastani, Chashni, Zaffran and the Pack of 3 are ruled out by name.
The pick: the 3ml of SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, with no floral note at all, and it wears 6-8 hours. If that oud is more than you want, SOSA Adaa at ₹379 is bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, and the jasmine is disclosed rather than buried.
Next step: send me the three women's perfumes you disliked most and the notes printed on their boxes, and I will tell you which accord they share and which of our four attars avoids it - Ask for an attar recommendation.
Most women's perfumes are wrong for you - the answer in five linesNawaab 3ml, ₹399 - oud, tobacco, leather, no floralThe shelf default is fruit, then flower, then sugarOut: Mastani, Chashni, Zaffran, the Pack of 3Adaa 3ml ₹379 if the oud is too much to start withNawaab is oud, and that is the whole question here
Three of those lines take something off the table and two of them are our own products. Nawaab is the heaviest thing we make for skin, so the oud is the decision, and I would rather put it in the fifth line than in a footnote.

Straight answer
Which attar should somebody buy if most women's perfumes are wrong for them?
SOSA Nawaab, the 3ml, at ₹399, with SOSA Adaa at ₹379 as the lighter of the two - and the part of the answer worth keeping is what your sentence rules out, because it is narrower than it sounds. The mainstream women's shelf is largely one accord repeated: a fruit on top, a flower in the middle, and vanilla, tonka, caramel or amber in the base. That arrangement is there for commercial reasons rather than perfumery ones. The sweet base materials are heavy and slow, so they hold a composition together for hours; they are inexpensive relative to the work they do; and a sweet perfume performs well in the ninety seconds somebody gives it on the back of a hand in a shop. Repeat that for thirty years across a thousand launches and the accord begins to look like a definition of the category it was only ever merchandised into. So what you have ruled out is an accord and a buying habit. I have no view on anything beyond that, and where somebody should sit on a shop's floor plan is not a perfumer's question. What I can do is read note lists. Now the ruling out, ours included. SOSA makes exactly four attars - Adaa, Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab. Mastani is night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka, which is the accord you have just described built in our own range, and we position it as the sensual floral. On the SOSA perfume line, Chashni is a sweet fruity-gourmand and Zaffran is a saffron sweet-amber. The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, the three heaviest attars we make, and it excludes Adaa, so it is the wrong first purchase. Two bottles are left. Nawaab is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber: the only one of our four with no floral note at any position, and the heaviest thing we make for skin. I should say that we publish it as masculine and royal - that is our own label, written by us, and it is a decision about selling rather than a fact about the liquid. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, and if jasmine is also out for you then Adaa is out with it. Both are alcohol-free with no DPG carriers, and both wear 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure we publish. Nawaab is an oud, and I would rather you heard that from me than found it at home; SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind. Ask for an attar recommendation and send me the three you disliked most.
What most women's perfumes share is one accord - fruit, flower, then sugar in the base - and it got repeated for commercial reasons. Of our four attars, Nawaab is the only one with no floral note at all: ₹399 for the 3ml, with oud, aged tobacco and leather in it. Adaa at ₹379 is the lighter one and carries jasmine sambac.
The bottle is one SOSA Nawaab - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco and leather over amber, with no floral note anywhere in it. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹399 for the 3ml, which is the size to start with, because we sell no sampler.

SOSA Nawaab
3ml, 6ml and 12ml at ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199. Published notes: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, with no synthetic oudh in it. An alcohol-free perfume oil with no DPG carriers on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune. It wears 6-8 hours, which is the only longevity figure SOSA publishes. Our own published positioning is masculine and royal, and that is a label rather than a note.

What the shelf has in common, and what it does not

Three things sit under your sentence, and only the last one is about shopping. The first two are the reason the shopping keeps going wrong.

1
Separate the accord from the category
One arrangement of materials got repeated until it looked like a definition
Fruit on top, a flower in the heart, and vanilla, tonka, caramel or amber underneath. That is not a description of women's perfume; it is a description of one accord that has been launched several thousand times. It is there because it works commercially: the base materials are inexpensive relative to how much they do, they hold a composition for hours, and the whole thing reads well in the ninety seconds a customer gives it at a counter. A dislike of that accord rules out a great deal of a shop floor and nothing else whatsoever. That distinction is the only reason this page can hand you a shortlist rather than a lecture.
Tip: Write down three perfumes you disliked and look up their note lists. You will usually find the same four base materials.
SOSA Nawaab
One bottle of Nawaab from ₹399 is the whole purchase here.
See SOSA Nawaab →
2
Read the note list, not the shelf
Bergamot, cardamom, saffron, sandalwood, oud and musk have never had a gender
A raw material has a smell, a cost and a rate of evaporation, and that is the whole list of its properties. Nothing in my cupboard is labelled for anybody. The labels arrive later, in marketing, and I should be straight that ours are there too: our ten solid body perfumes are listed for Women and for Men, Nawaab is published as masculine and royal, and Mastani is published as the sensual floral. Those are decisions we made about selling. The note list underneath is the part that stays the same whoever picks the bottle up, and it is the part I would ask you to read first, on our listings as much as on anybody else's.
Tip: On any listing, read the notes before the name. If only an accord is given and no notes, you have still learned something.
SOSA Nawaab
One bottle of Nawaab from ₹399 is the whole purchase here.
See SOSA Nawaab →
3
Then choose between two bottles
Four attars in, two out, and the one remaining decision is oud
Here is the subtraction in public. Mastani carries jasmine, rose, vanilla and tonka, so it is the accord you are leaving and it goes. Ameeri is Taif rose, real Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh: a rose at the centre, so it goes too on this brief. That leaves Nawaab, which has no floral note but is built on oud, aged tobacco and leather, and Adaa, which is the lightest thing we make but carries jasmine sambac in a supporting role. So the last question is whether you want an oud or a trace of jasmine, and it is genuinely yours to answer rather than mine.
SOSA Adaa
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
See SOSA Adaa →
The SOSA principle
The women's shelf is not a category of smells but one accord repeated - fruit, flower, sugar - and an accord can be ruled out without ruling out anything else.
Which is why a list of perfumes somebody disliked usually turns out to be a list of the same four base materials in different bottles.
SOSA Nawaab
No floral note at any position: SOSA Nawaab is the only one of our four attars with no flower in it at all - white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. ₹399 for the 3ml.

Reading the two candidates side by side

Here is the same reasoning as a table, worth keeping open the next time you are reading any perfume listing rather than only ours.

The SOSA shortlist
What a women's-shelf complaint usually means, and where it lands in the SOSA range
The words people use What to do
SOSA NawaabToo sweet, too fruity, too floral
That is the mainstream accord in three words: fruit, flower, then vanilla or amber in the base. Of our four attars, Nawaab has none of those three and Adaa has no fruit and no sugar.
I want no flower in it at all
One bottle qualifies here and it is Nawaab, which is also the heaviest thing we make for skin and is built on oud. Adaa's jasmine sambac puts it out on a strict reading.
SOSA AdaaI want light, but not sweet and not fruity
Adaa: bergamot and green cardamom on top, white musk rather than vanilla in the base, and the jasmine sambac disclosed. ₹379 for the 3ml.
I do not want an oud either
Then Nawaab, Ameeri and Mastani are all out, because three of our four attars carry oud and only Adaa does not. If jasmine is also out, no attar of ours fits and I would say so.
I want to stop shopping by shelf
Read the notes in their printed order and treat the first two as the subject of the composition. The name, the photograph and the gender label on any listing are decisions about selling.
I would rather spray than dab
Not an attar, then. Samundar is SOSA's aquatic marine and Khayaal is a sparkling bergamot and neroli, both ₹599 for 10ml, and no note list or wear figure is published for either.

If your objection to that shelf is specifically the sweetness rather than the whole arrangement, the version of this page written on that is why women's perfumes often smell too sweet to me, which gives the commercial explanation straight and then the way out. And if what you actually want is the woody end of the shop, that is the page for a reader who loves woody perfumes from the men's shelf, which goes straight to Nawaab's six notes and stops there. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and every attar named here is its own composition.

SOSA Nawaab
The lighter of the two, with the jasmine named: SOSA Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk, and the jasmine is a supporting note rather than the subject. ₹379 for the 3ml.
One bottle, one size, one pulse point
SOSA Nawaab is ₹399 for 3ml - the smallest bottle we make of it, and the one I would want you to buy first.
See the SOSA Nawaab Ask for an attar recommendation
Nothing in my materials cupboard is labelled for anybody, and the labels that do exist were all written upstairs in marketing, ours included.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA
Why this particular bottle, for this particular brief
Six notes, no flower among them, and the oud named in the first line rather than the last

The SOSA attar specification

SOSA makes exactly four attars, and I would rather hand you all four with their notes than a shortlist with the awkward parts removed. Below are the two that survive your brief, and the honest alternative if an oil is not what you want at all. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Read the note list and let it do the ruling out: that is the whole method, and it works on our listings as well as on anybody else's. SOSA makes exactly four attars, and Mastani, Chashni, Zaffran and the Pack of 3 are all named on this page as wrong for this brief. Nawaab carries oud, aged tobacco and leather, and Adaa carries jasmine sambac - both disclosed here rather than buried. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing is published for the perfume line or for the solid body perfumes, and no note list is published for the solids at all, which is why this page never tells you how one of them smells. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one - nothing about how anybody will read what you are wearing - and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind. A note from Sonal

The letters I get about this arrive in nearly the same shape as one another, which is itself the answer. Somebody lists four or five perfumes that did not work, and when I look them up they share the same base: a vanilla, a tonka, a caramel or an amber, with a fruit over the top and a flower in between. You have not rejected a category. You have rejected an accord that has been launched a few thousand times, and you have done it with better evidence than most people bring me.

The perfumery part is plain enough. That accord holds together because heavy, slow materials in the base keep a composition alive for hours, and those materials happen to be sweet and comparatively inexpensive for the work they do. It also performs unusually well in the ninety seconds somebody spends on it at a counter. Three separate commercial pressures, one arrangement of notes, and thirty years of repetition. Nothing about it came from a raw material having a view about who was wearing it.

So my answer is one bottle and the smallest size of it. Nawaab at ₹399 for 3ml is the only one of our four with no floral note, and it is white royal oud, sandalwood, saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, so it is an oud and I will not dress that up. If the oud is too much, Adaa at ₹379 is the lighter route and it carries jasmine sambac. I am ruling out Mastani for its vanilla and tonka and the Pack of 3 for being the three heaviest things we make. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

I'm a woman but hate most women's perfumes - which attar should I try?
Nawaab, and buy the 3ml at Rs 399. SOSA makes exactly four attars and Nawaab is the only one with no floral note anywhere in it: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. It is also the heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin, so the oud is the real decision. If that is too much, Adaa is Rs 379 and carries jasmine sambac in a supporting role, which is worth knowing before you buy.
What do most women's perfumes have in common?
One accord, repeated: a fruit on top, a flower in the heart, and vanilla, tonka, caramel or amber in the base. It is there for commercial reasons rather than perfumery ones. Those base materials are heavy and slow, so they hold a composition together for hours, they are inexpensive relative to the work they do, and a sweet perfume performs well in the ninety seconds it gets at a shop counter. Repeated often enough, an accord starts to look like a category.
Which SOSA products should I avoid on this brief?
Mastani, which is night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka, and which SOSA positions as the sensual floral. On the SOSA perfume line, Chashni is a sweet fruity-gourmand and Zaffran is a saffron sweet-amber. And the Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055, which is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, the three heaviest attars SOSA makes, and it excludes Adaa entirely, so it is the wrong first purchase here.
Does SOSA label its own products by gender?
Yes, and it is fair to say so on a page like this. The ten solid body perfumes are listed for Women and for Men, Nawaab is published as masculine and royal, and Mastani is published as the sensual floral. SOSA sells no unisex-labelled solid perfume at all. Those are labels written to sell the products. The published note list is the part that describes what is in the bottle, and it is the part worth choosing on.
Is Nawaab or Adaa the better place to start?
It depends on one note. Nawaab at Rs 399 has no flower in it but is built on white royal oud with aged tobacco and leather, and it is the heaviest attar SOSA makes. Adaa at Rs 379 is the lightest, with bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, white musk and jasmine sambac in a supporting role. Buy one 3ml rather than both, wear it for a full day, and judge the drydown rather than the first ten minutes.
SOSA Nawaab
And the purchase I would talk you out of: The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - the three heaviest attars we make - and it does not include Adaa. One 3ml is the honest way in.
An accord is not a category

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. The products named are SOSA's own; the method - shop the note you have ruled out, not the note you hope for - applies to any brand.

Facts verified 17 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, each sold in three sizes, 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Ameeri is ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165, with published notes of Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. SOSA Mastani is ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179, with published notes of night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer.
