Here is a number that explains most of this. A 150 sq ft room with a 9 ft ceiling contains 1,350 cubic feet of air. The identical floor plan with a 12 ft ceiling contains 1,800. Same room on the drawing, a third more air to scent. Every coverage claim in home fragrance — ours included — is quoted in square feet, because that is the number people know about their homes. But fragrance does not spread across a floor. It disperses through a volume, and in an older building with tall ceilings you have a great deal more volume than the number on the box assumes.
Quick answers — read this first
The volume: raise a ceiling from 9 ft to 12 ft and you add a third more air at the same floor area. The same bottle now has to scent all of it.

The stratification: warm air rises and carries fragrance vapour upward, so the most concentrated layer in a tall room sits near the ceiling, well above nose height.

The short answer
Short answer: Because coverage figures are expressed in square feet but fragrance fills a volume. A 12 ft ceiling holds roughly a third more air than a 9 ft ceiling over the same floor area, so the same bottle produces a lower concentration. On top of that, warm air rises and carries vapour with it, so the strongest scented layer in a tall room collects near the ceiling instead of where you sit.
What to change: Use all six reeds rather than four. Place the bottle at seated or standing nose height on an internal wall rather than high on a shelf or a mantelpiece. Why is home fragrance harder to notice in a room with high ceilings?
1. Because you are scenting a volume, not a floor. Fragrance concentration is a quantity of molecules divided by the amount of air they are spread through. Ceiling height goes straight into the denominator. Go from 9 ft to 12 ft and there is a third more air; go from 9 ft to 13 ft in a proper old apartment and it is closer to half again. The bottle has not changed. The room has.

2. Because warm air rises, and takes the fragrance with it. Room air is never uniform. Warmer air is less dense and rises, and evaporating fragrance vapour travels with it. In a normal-height room this hardly matters, because there is not far to go and everything mixes. In a tall room the warmest, most scented layer collects against the ceiling and sits there. Your fragrance is not gone; it is above your head. This is why standing on a stool in a high-ceilinged hall sometimes reveals a scent you could not detect from the sofa.

3. Because old buildings with high ceilings usually leak. The two go together. Buildings designed with tall rooms were designed for air movement: door ventilators, tall timber windows, deep sills, generous shutters. Even shut, they exchange air with the outside far more freely than a modern gasketed flat. That higher background air-change rate is comfortable and healthy, and it also carries your fragrance away steadily.

Why square feet is the wrong unit for fragrance

Square feet became the standard unit for diffuser coverage for a practical reason: everyone knows the area of their flat and almost nobody knows its volume. It works well enough because most modern housing is built to a fairly consistent floor-to-ceiling height, so area is a reliable proxy for volume. The moment your ceiling is unusual, the proxy breaks. Older buildings — 1930s to 1970s apartment blocks, converted bungalows, homes with clerestory windows, anything with a mezzanine or a double-height living area — are exactly the case where the shortcut fails, and they are also the homes where people most often conclude that home fragrance simply does not work for them.

The second half of the explanation is that concentration in a room is not a fixed pool but a balance. The reeds add molecules at a steady rate set by evaporation. The room removes them at a rate set by air exchange, by adsorption onto surfaces and fabric, and by simple dispersal into whatever volume is available. What you smell is the level where those two rates meet. A tall old room raises the removal side twice — more volume to disperse into, and more air leakage to carry it out — while leaving the supply side exactly where it was. Understanding it as a balance rather than a quantity is also what tells you the useful fix: you cannot make a bottle stronger, but you can add more evaporating surface, and you can stop trying to fill the whole volume and instead build a usable concentration in the part of it where people actually are.

Your scent is above your head
Warm air rises, and in a room with a tall ceiling there is a genuine vertical gradient — the air near the ceiling is warmer than the air at the floor, and the fragrance vapour that leaves your reeds joins that upward movement. In a 9 ft room this is invisible because everything mixes. In a 13 ft room it means the strongest layer is somewhere you never breathe. Three practical consequences follow. Put the bottle low — a console, a side table, a low shelf — rather than on a mantelpiece or a tall bookcase. Put it near where people actually sit or pass, because you are building a local concentration rather than filling a hall. And if you have a ceiling fan, note that running it on low genuinely helps by mixing the layers, while running it hard does the opposite by accelerating the loss.
Test it: stand on a stool in the middle of the room. If the scent is obvious up there and invisible at the sofa, this is your problem and it is a placement fix, not a product one.

Tall rooms came with ventilators
The architecture that gave you the ceiling also gave you the air paths. Door-top ventilators, tall shuttered windows, gaps around old timber frames, jaali panels and open stair cores were all part of a design intended to move hot air out at high level. That means an old high-ceilinged flat has a higher background air-change rate than a modern sealed one even with everything closed, which is comfortable and healthy and is also a continuous drain on any fragrance you add. The correct response is not to block the ventilators — they are doing an important job, and old buildings that get sealed up start having damp and stuffiness problems they never had before. The correct response is to scent the zones that are least exposed to that flow: an entrance lobby, a reading corner, a bedroom with a door that stays shut.

Symptom to cause in a tall room

High ceilings explain a lot of "the fragrance is too weak" complaints, but not all of them. Work through the rows and confirm before you spend anything.

How to dose a tall room

Start by using everything the box gives you. Six fibre reeds come with every bottle, and a tall room is precisely where all six belong. Four reeds is a bedroom setting for a normal-height, normally-sealed room; using four in a 12 ft-ceilinged hall and concluding the product is weak is a very common and completely avoidable mistake. Beyond that, reed count has a ceiling of its own — you cannot get more than six reeds' worth of surface out of one bottle neck. Once you are at six and still want more, the next step is a second source, not a longer flipping routine.

Then place for people rather than for symmetry. A tall room is not one uniform space; it is a set of zones with a large empty volume above them. Scent the zones. In a long living room that means one bottle near the seating and one near the entrance to the room, at side-table height, on internal walls, away from windows and out of any draught line. In a big hall with a dining area, one at the console by the door and one on the sideboard. This is the question I most often get wrong-footed by, because the person asking it usually assumes the fragrance is at fault and I have to explain that their ceiling is. Coverage in square feet is a convenient lie that everyone in this industry tells, including me — it is on my own packaging. It is accurate for the flats most people live in and it quietly stops being accurate the moment the ceiling goes over about ten feet. If you live in an old building with tall rooms, mentally reduce every coverage figure you read, from any brand.

What I would not do is sell you a bigger bottle as the answer, because bottle size is a supply of liquid, not a rate of delivery. A 130ml and a 50ml with six reeds each evaporate at the same rate in the same room; the 130ml simply runs for longer. If your room is under-scented, more liquid in one bottle changes nothing about how it smells today. What changes it is more evaporating surface in more places, or an active machine. Buy the 130ml because you would rather reorder every four months than every two, which is a perfectly good reason.

And I would gently argue against fighting the room. Tall old rooms are wonderful and part of what makes them wonderful is that they are airy — the same property that dilutes your diffuser. Rather than trying to fill thousands of cubic feet evenly, build two or three good pockets: the entrance, where the first impression happens; the seating area, where people spend hours; the bedroom, where the door is shut anyway.
