There are two different questions hiding inside this one, and they have opposite answers. Whether scenting belongs in the plan: yes, and earlier than most people put it. Whether it should be running when you cut the ribbon: no, and that is the part nobody tells you before opening week.
Quick answers — read this first
Should scenting go into the interior plan? Yes, at the services drawing rather than at the snagging list. Three things need to exist on paper: a socket, a mounting position, and a decision about where the machine sits relative to the air supply and the door. All three are trivial before the joinery closes and awkward afterwards. You are not committing to a fragrance at this stage and you are not even committing to buying a machine - you are reserving the option, which costs the price of one power point.
Should it be switched on for the opening? No, and this is the mistake I see most often. A brand-new store smells of adhesive, paint, sealant, carpet and new joinery, and none of that is fixed by fragrance - it has to be ventilated out. Running a scent machine into a fit-out smell produces a third smell that is worse than either, and it teaches your team that the fragrance is there to deal with problems. Run the store unscented for its first weeks with as much fresh air as the fit-out allows, and start the profile when the room smells of nothing in particular.
What does it cost to plan for it? The plan costs a socket. The machine, when its time comes, is one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a boutique of 1,500 sq ft and up, or one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 if the store is a single room under about 750 sq ft, where a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. No one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell, conversion or spend, and a supplier offering you a figure is selling.
The short answer
Short answer: yes in the plan and no in opening week. Put a socket, a mounting position and an air-path decision into the services drawing, because all three are trivial before the joinery closes. Then leave the machine switched off - a new store smells of adhesive, paint and new joinery, which has to be ventilated out rather than scented over, so the profile starts a few weeks after opening.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) specified at drawing stage and commissioned a few weeks after opening, or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) where the boutique is a single trading room.
Next step: send the services drawing with the AC supply and return positions marked, and we will mark where the machine should go and tell you when to switch it on - Ask for a retail scenting plan.
The plan is early and the fragrance is late, and holding those two apart is the whole of this answer. Everything that is cheap to do now becomes expensive once the joinery is closed and the shopfitters have gone.

I am opening a new premium watch boutique - should scenting be included in the interior plan?
Yes, and put it in earlier than feels necessary, then leave it switched off for longer than feels comfortable. Those two instructions look contradictory and they are the whole answer. Take the plan first. What scenting needs from an interior drawing is small and cheap: a power point where the machine will actually live, a mounting position, and a decision about where that position sits relative to the air-conditioning supply and the entrance. A 5W machine will run off an ordinary socket, so this is not a services headache - it is a matter of somebody having decided, before the joinery closes, that the machine goes on the wall above the far end of the display run rather than being placed on a shelf near the door in month two because that is the only free plug. Retrofitting works, and it is always worse: you end up with a visible unit, a trailing lead, or a position chosen by the electrics rather than by the air. Add one line about the machine not sitting at the threshold, because a door that opens onto a street or a mall corridor exchanges the air near it many times an hour and no setting fixes that. That is your entire brief and it costs the price of one socket. Now the part that matters more. Do not switch it on for the opening. A brand-new store smells of adhesive, paint, sealant, carpet, and new timber and lacquer, and that is a real smell with a real cause that has to be ventilated out over weeks. Fragrance is never a way to cover another smell, and putting a profile into a fit-out smell produces a third thing that is worse than either and takes longer to clear. Run the store unscented with as much fresh air as the fit-out allows - windows if you have them, the AC on full fresh-air intake if your contractor can set that, doors open before trading. Somewhere between week three and week six the room stops smelling of itself, and that is when the profile starts, at a low setting, judged by walking in from outside. If you have already ordered the machine, that is fine; it can sit in its box or on its bracket doing nothing. The hardware is the easy part. From about 1,500 sq ft, or once there is an entrance lobby and a private lounge on the same air path, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, waterless, wall or HVAC mountable, timers on your trading hours and a key-lock so an excited new team cannot renegotiate the level weekly. Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. And the thing I will not sell you with a new store: no one can promise that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell, conversion or spend, and any supplier who quotes you a figure for an opening is selling.Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the services drawing.
Put a socket, a mounting position and an air-path decision in the services drawing - that is the whole plan. Then run the store unscented for its first weeks, because a fit-out smell is ventilated out and never scented over. Machine ₹11,999, or ₹1,899 under 750 sq ft.
Specify one SOSA Vaayu at drawing stage - 5W off an ordinary socket, wall or HVAC mountable, waterless, with app timers and a key-lock. ₹11,999, one unit, commissioned weeks after you open. Under 750 sq ft, plan for the Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead and keep the socket anyway.
You are choosing a class of machine at drawing stage, not a fragrance. Which class is decided by carpet area and how many separate bodies of air the finished store will have.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock. 165 x 80.5 x 215mm, 0.9kg, black or white, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounted - which is the dimension your joiner needs.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. For a single trading room this is the honest specification at ₹1,899, and it still deserves a planned position and its own socket rather than a spare plug behind the till.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, DC 12V/1A at 5W, 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA before you plan around it.
None of these is expensive now. All of them are irritating later, and one of them cannot be fixed at all once the shopfitters have gone.

Reserve the position, not the fragrance
A socket and a bracket cost nothing today and cannot be added neatly in month three
The decision to make at drawing stage is where the machine lives, not what it smells of. Choose a position well inside the store on the air path, ideally where the air-conditioning supply will carry from, and put a power point there. A Vaayu draws 5W and is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg, so it can sit behind a plinth, on a wall bracket or on an HVAC mount, and any joiner can make a recess for it if they know before they build. Every retrofit I have seen ended with either a visible box or a lead across a wall, both of which are avoidable for the price of one socket.
Tip: Mark the position on the drawing even if you have not decided whether to buy. The option is nearly free; the retrofit is not.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
The threshold is the one place a machine should never be placed
The instinct is to scent the entrance, because that is where the customer arrives. It is the worst position in the building. A street or mall-facing door that opens constantly exchanges the air near it many times an hour, so the fragrance there is diluted and gone while the interior, if you turn the machine up to compensate, becomes overpowering. The threshold is not where a store's scent lives. Place the machine well inside the pressure boundary, away from the return grille, and let the air path carry it forward. If the fit-out allows a lobby or an air curtain, that is an architectural answer to an architectural problem.
Tip: Ask the shopfitter where the return grille will be, and keep the machine out of its pull.
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
A new store should trade unscented for its first weeks, and somebody has to own that decision
If nobody writes it down, the machine gets switched on the night before the opening because it is there and it seems like a nice touch. Put a date in the programme instead - three to six weeks after opening - and give it to a named person. Between now and then, ventilate: fresh air before trading, extract running, and patience. Adhesive, sealant, paint and new carpet release for weeks, and carpet and upholstery in particular absorb and re-release. Scenting over that is the classic opening-week mistake, and the result is a room that smells confused rather than considered. When the room smells of nothing in particular, start low.
One Sukoon ₹1,899, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Scenting belongs in a new boutique's drawings and not in its opening week - the plan is early, the fragrance is late, and confusing the two is what produces an opening-week smell nobody chose.
Everything the plan needs costs the price of a socket; everything the opening needs is fresh air and patience.
Small enough to design in: SOSA Vaayu is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm at 0.9kg and draws 5W, so a joiner can recess it or a bracket can carry it. ₹11,999.
Mountable where a shelf cannot go: Wall or HVAC mounting is how an entrance lobby and a private lounge end up on the same air as the showroom. ₹11,999.
The machine that gets switched on the night before an opening is doing the one job I would never sell it for, which is competing with the smell of the adhesive.
Specify the class of machine now and buy it when the programme says. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA before you write refills into an opening budget; bulk or corporate pricing, GST and corporate invoicing, AMC, warranty terms, installation, delivery timing, minimum order quantities and multi-site rollout support are likewise not published and should be confirmed with us directly rather than assumed on a programme. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA watch-boutique specification
What to specify at drawing stage, by finished floor size
Reserve the position early and start the fragrance late. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting, seating or case layout; it is never used to cover a fit-out, paint, adhesive or carpet smell, and a new store should be ventilated and run unscented for its first weeks. And plainly: no one can promise that ambient scent moves footfall, dwell, conversion or spend, least of all in an opening month when everything else about the store is also new. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
The calls about new stores arrive in two waves. The first is nine months out, from an architect who has been asked to include scenting and wants to know what to draw. That conversation takes four minutes: a socket, a position on the air path away from the door, and a bracket or recess if you want the machine out of sight. The second wave arrives four days before the opening, from an owner who has just walked into their finished store and realised it smells of glue.
I cannot help with the second call the way people want me to. A fit-out smell is a real thing being released by real materials, and it goes when it goes - usually a few weeks, sometimes longer with a lot of new carpet and joinery. Putting a fragrance into it does not shorten that, and it produces a combination nobody would have chosen. So I say the same thing every time: open unscented, ventilate hard, and let the room settle. The store will not suffer for it, and you will get a clean first impression of your own profile a month later rather than a muddled one on day one.
The hardware, when its turn comes: from 1,500 sq ft a Vaayu at ₹11,999, mounted where you drew it, timers on trading hours, key-lock on from the first day so a new team never learns that the dial is theirs. Under 750 sq ft a Sukoon at ₹1,899. Installation, AMC, delivery timing and bulk pricing are not published services, and cold-air refill oil is not sold separately today, so confirm all of that with us before it goes on a programme. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Should scenting be included in the interior plan for a new watch boutique?
Yes, at the services drawing stage. What it needs is small: a power point where the machine will live, a mounting position or recess, and a decision about where that sits relative to the air-conditioning supply and the entrance. All three are trivial before the joinery closes and awkward afterwards. You are reserving the position rather than committing to a fragrance, and it costs about the price of one socket.
Should the scent machine be running on opening day?
No. A new store smells of adhesive, paint, sealant, carpet and new joinery, and that has to be ventilated out over weeks rather than covered. Fragrance is never used to mask another smell, and running a profile into a fit-out smell produces a third result that is worse than either. Trade unscented with as much fresh air as the fit-out allows, and start the profile once the room smells of nothing in particular.
When should a new boutique switch its fragrance on?
Usually somewhere between week three and week six after opening, judged by the room rather than by the calendar. Walk in from the street in the morning: when you no longer notice the fit-out, the store is ready. Start at a low setting, ask your team after a full trading week whether it is comfortable, and if they say it is too much, turn it down and lock it there.
Where should the machine go in a new store plan?
Well inside the store on the air path, away from the entrance and out of the pull of the return grille. The threshold is the worst position in the building because a door onto a street or mall corridor exchanges that air many times an hour, so fragrance placed there is diluted immediately and turning the machine up simply makes the interior overpowering. A wall or HVAC mount lets one machine reach an entrance area, the showroom and a lounge.
Will scenting the store from day one help the opening?
No one can promise that and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support a figure, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from everything else about a new store. Opening week is also the worst possible moment to judge a fragrance, because the building is still releasing its own materials. Any supplier attaching a number to an opening is selling.
The plan for a single-room store: SOSA Sukoon covers roughly 270-320 sq ft and ships with three 15ml fragrances. ₹1,899, and it still deserves a planned position.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.
Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
