People send me open-plan floor plans apologetically, as though the absence of walls were a problem I would have to solve around. It is the opposite. An open plan is the one building type where the air is entirely on your side, and the whole job comes down to standing in the right place.
Quick answers — read this first
Is an open-plan experience centre harder to scent? No - it is the easiest kind of building there is. What limits a scent machine is never distance; it is a shut door or a genuinely separate air path. An open plan has neither. The whole floor is one connected volume that the air conditioning and the front door are already circulating for you, so one source placed upstream reaches everything. The buildings that give me trouble are the partitioned ones, where a closed consultation room needs thinking about separately.

Where does the machine go? Upstream on the air path - near where air enters the floor, usually an AC supply grille, about a metre off the ground, and well away from the return grille that would draw the output back out. In an open plan the room does the distributing, so you are choosing a starting point rather than a coverage point. What you must not do is put it in the geometric middle of the hall, which looks even-handed on the drawing and has the machine working against the airflow in one direction.

What size machine, and what does it cost? Do the arithmetic in cubic metres rather than square feet, because experience centres run tall. A 2,000 sq ft floor at a normal ceiling is roughly 560m³; the same floor under a double-height atrium can be closer to 1,100m³. One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 is rated to 1000m³. Total hardware spend: ₹11,999, one machine. Past roughly 5,000 sq ft it becomes an Aangan at ₹25,999 into the air handling.
The short answer
Short answer: with one machine placed upstream on the air path, because an open plan is a single connected volume rather than several to be reached separately. That makes it easier than a partitioned floor, not harder - what limits a machine is a shut door or a separate air path, and an open plan has neither. Measure the cubic volume rather than the floor area, since a double-height atrium can nearly double it. One Vaayu (₹11,999) up to about 3,000 sq ft, and an Aangan (₹25,999) past roughly 5,000.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) placed upstream where air enters the floor, or one SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) into the air handling once the centre is past roughly 5,000 sq ft.
Next step: send the floor plan with the ceiling height written on it and the AC supply and return grilles marked, and we will give you the cubic figure and the one position - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

Straight answer
How do you scent an open-plan modular kitchen experience centre?
With one machine, placed upstream on the air path - and the first thing to say is that an open plan is the easiest kind of building to scent, not the hardest. That surprises people, because the instinct is that walls contain a fragrance and an open floor lets it escape. It does not work like that. Nothing about an interior wall traps fragrance in a useful way; what walls actually do is divide a building into separate volumes of air that must each be reached on their own. A partitioned showroom with a closed consultation room and a back office is a harder problem than an open hall twice its size, because the partitioned one has three air paths and the open one has a single circulating volume that the air conditioning and the front door are already stirring for you. So in an open-plan centre your machine is not fighting anything. It is releasing into a room that distributes on your behalf. That reduces the job to two pieces of work. The first is arithmetic, and it must be cubic. Measure length and width in metres, multiply by the actual ceiling height, and deduct nothing for the displays - they occupy floor rather than the air you need to reach. A 2,000 sq ft floor at a normal ceiling comes to roughly 560m³. The same floor plan under the double-height atrium that experience centres love can be closer to 1,100m³, which is a different machine decision entirely. A square-foot figure misleads most badly here, and any supplier who quotes you coverage only in square feet has skipped the first step of the calculation. The second piece of work is finding upstream. Walk the floor with the AC running as it runs on a trading day. Feel which ceiling grilles are blowing and which are pulling; a strip of tissue settles it in seconds. Watch which way the room moves when the front door opens. You will find that even a perfectly open hall has a direction, and the end the air enters from is where the machine belongs - roughly a metre up, away from the return grille, never at the entrance itself and never inside a display kitchen. From there, one source does the whole floor. What you must resist is the temptation to place it in the geometric centre because that looks fair on a drawing: in the middle, half the output travels against the airflow, and a second machine somewhere else does not add coverage - the two outputs meet and the meeting point reads as a change a customer walks through. On hardware: one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, rated to 1000m³, run low on a trading-hours timer. Total hardware spend: ₹11,999, one machine, one open floor. The honest concession, and it cuts both ways here. If your open plan is small - under about 750 sq ft, which plenty of open studios are - a Vaayu is roughly seven times the volume you own and one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the right buy. And if the cubic figure comes out past what one Vaayu is rated for - which a large open centre with a tall atrium easily can - the answer is not two or three Vaayus scattered about but one SOSA Aangan at ₹25,999 specified into the air handling, where the building's own ductwork does the distribution. Two standing limits. Fragrance is never used to mask another smell, and an open plan is unforgiving here because a fit-out or cooking smell anywhere on the floor is a smell everywhere on it. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries or order value, and a supplier who offers you a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the floor plan.
An open plan is one volume, which makes it the easy case. Do the arithmetic in cubic metres, find where air enters, put one machine there about a metre up. ₹11,999 up to roughly 3,000 sq ft, ₹1,899 if the open studio is small, ₹25,999 past 5,000.
One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, rated to 1000m³ - which in an open plan is one connected volume rather than several to be reached separately. Waterless, under 38dB, app timers, key-lock. Under about 750 sq ft buy the Sukoon at ₹1,899 instead, and past roughly 5,000 sq ft the conversation is an Aangan into the air handling.

The machine, by cubic volume

In an open plan the only thing that decides the machine is the cubic figure you measured, since there is nothing on the floor for the fragrance to get stuck behind. The images link to the product pages so you can check the coverage figures yourself.

Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft at a normal ceiling. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, app timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock. Freestanding or wall-mountable, which lets it sit exactly where the air enters rather than where there is a spare surface.

SOSA Aangan
An open experience centre past roughly 5,000 sq ft
SOSA Aangan
HVAC nebulising diffuser rated to approximately 8,000-10,000 sq ft, specified into the building's air handling rather than placed in the room. Where a tall, large open plan takes the cubic figure past a single Vaayu's rating, this is the honest answer rather than three units competing on one floor.
From ₹25,999
SOSA Vaayu
One source for a floor with no internal doors
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

The three moves for an open floor

There are only three, and the first takes ten minutes with a tape measure. Do them in this order and the hardware decision makes itself at the end.

1
Measure the cube, including the atrium
Experience centres are tall, and height is where the volume hides
Length times width times height in metres, deducting nothing for the displays. A 2,000 sq ft open floor at a normal ceiling is roughly 560m³ and comfortably inside a single machine's rating. Put the same plan under a double-height atrium and you are closer to 1,100m³, which is a different decision. This is the number that has to be written on the plan, because everything after it refers back to it, and it is the number a square-foot figure quietly hides. If your centre has a mezzanine void or a feature ceiling over the entrance, measure that section separately and add it in rather than taking an average.
Tip: Treat any supplier who quotes coverage only in square feet as having skipped the first step of the calculation.

2
Find upstream and stand there
Even a perfectly open hall has a direction
Open does not mean still. The AC supply pushes air one way, the return pulls it another, and the entrance adds its own movement every time it opens. Walk the floor on a normal trading morning and identify which grilles blow and which pull - a strip of tissue held up at each one answers it in seconds - then follow that flow across the room. The upstream end is where the machine belongs, about a metre off the floor, away from the return. Placed there, the building distributes for you and the machine can run at a low setting. Placed in the middle because it looked fair on the drawing, half its output travels against the flow.
Tip: Do the walk at your busiest hour, not first thing. Air behaves differently once the doors have been working.

3
Resist adding a second unit
One volume takes one source, however large the floor plan looks
The reflex in a big open room is to add machines at the far end, and it makes the room worse rather than better. Two sources in one connected volume do not sum into even coverage; they produce two gradients that meet somewhere, and that meeting line is a change a customer notices walking through it. If the far end reads weak, the fix is almost always to move the single machine further upstream or to raise it to the right height, and only then to look at the dial. A second machine earns its place only where there is a second volume of air - another floor, or a room that genuinely closes with its own AC. If the cubic figure is simply too big, the answer is a larger machine into the air handling rather than more small ones on the floor.

The SOSA principle
Walls do not hold fragrance in; they divide a building into separate volumes that each have to be reached. Which is why an open-plan centre, the case everyone assumes is difficult, is the one where a single machine does the most work.
The hard building is the one with a closed consultation room and a door that is always shut.
SOSA Vaayu
Rated to one connected volume: 1000m³ in an open plan is one number to compare against, rather than several rooms to reach separately. ₹11,999.

The plan for an open-plan centre

Five steps, in order, none of which involves choosing a fragrance until the fourth.

The SOSA plan
Scenting an open-plan modular kitchen experience centre
The step What to do
SOSA VaayuWrite down the cubic figure
Length x width x height in metres, with any double-height section measured separately and added. Deduct nothing for displays. This number governs everything after it.
Map the air
Find the supply grilles, the returns and the direction the room moves when the front door opens. Ten minutes and a strip of tissue.
Place one machine upstream
About a metre off the floor, away from the AC return, never at the entrance and never inside a display kitchen. One source, one open volume.
Choose one profile
Dry and material-led, nothing edible, and the same throughout - an open plan makes any second fragrance impossible to keep apart anyway.
Set the level from the seat
Judged at the consultation table at minute ninety, and confirmed with the designers who breathe it all day rather than with customers.
SOSA AanganOnly add hardware for a second volume
A separate floor, or a room that closes with its own AC. If the cubic figure itself is too large, move up to an Aangan rather than out to more units.

If your open plan is more of a corridor than a hall, the geometry is worth reading about in how to scent a long, narrow showroom, which is another shape that turns out to be easier than it looks. And if your centre has the double-height ceiling that open plans usually come with, whether a scent machine still works with very high ceilings is the post that deals with the arithmetic properly. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

Owners apologise to me for their open plans. They should be pleased: the absence of internal doors is the single most helpful thing a building can offer a scenting plan.

The SOSA kitchen-showroom specification

One machine covers most open floors and the Aangan takes over once the cubic figure outgrows it, which in a tall experience centre happens sooner than the square footage suggests. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA before you plan around it. Do the cubic arithmetic before you look at any product page, place the single machine upstream rather than centrally, and move it before you add to it. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or display styling; it is never used to mask another smell - and an open plan is unforgiving about that, because a fit-out or cooking smell anywhere on the floor is a smell everywhere on it. A note from Sonal

Open-plan plans arrive in my inbox with a note of apology attached. There are no walls, so people assume there is nothing to hold the fragrance and that they will need several machines to make up for it. It is worth saying plainly that this is backwards. An interior wall does not keep a fragrance where you want it; what it does is create a second volume of air that has to be reached on its own terms. The buildings that make me work hard are the ones with a closed consultation room, a shut back office and a mezzanine - not the beautiful open halls that experience centres are increasingly built as.

So in an open plan the whole job is arithmetic and one decision. The arithmetic has to be cubic, because these buildings are tall and the height is where the volume hides - a double-height atrium can nearly double the number your floor area suggests, and that is the number a machine actually has to serve. The decision is where the air enters, which takes a walk with a strip of tissue and about ten minutes. Put the machine at that end, a metre off the floor, and the building carries your profile across the room without any help from a second unit.

On hardware: one Vaayu at ₹11,999 for an open floor of roughly 1,500 to 3,000 sq ft at a normal ceiling. One Sukoon at ₹1,899 if the open studio is small, where a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. And where the cubic figure has genuinely outgrown a single machine, one Aangan at ₹25,999 into the air handling rather than three Vaayus arguing with each other on one floor. Nothing edible in any of them, and nothing at all while the fit-out is still curing. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I scent an open-plan modular kitchen experience centre?
With one machine placed upstream on the air path, about a metre off the floor and away from the AC return. An open plan is a single connected volume of air, so one source reaches the whole floor and the building's own circulation does the distribution. Measure the cubic volume first, in metres, and compare it against a rating in cubic metres rather than square feet.
Is an open plan harder to scent than a showroom with walls?
No, it is easier. Walls do not hold fragrance in - what they do is divide a building into separate volumes that each need reaching on their own. A partitioned showroom with a closed consultation room and a back office is a harder problem than an open hall twice the size, because it has several air paths where the open floor has one that is already circulating.
Do I need more than one machine for a large open floor?
Usually not. Two sources in one connected volume do not add up into even coverage; they create two gradients that meet somewhere, and the meeting line reads as a change. If the far end is weak, move the single machine further upstream or correct its height before touching the dial. If the cubic figure genuinely exceeds one machine's rating, move up to an Aangan at Rs 25,999 into the air handling rather than adding more units on the floor.
My experience centre has a double-height atrium. Does that change the machine?
It can change it completely, because coverage is rated in cubic metres and height is where the volume hides. A 2,000 sq ft floor at a normal ceiling is roughly 560 cubic metres; the same plan under a double-height atrium can approach 1,100. Measure any tall section separately and add it in rather than averaging, then compare the total against the rating and mount the machine low rather than high.
Will an open-plan centre that smells consistent bring in more walk-ins?
No one can promise that and I will not. SOSA has run no research that would support a figure, and there is no honest way to separate ambient scent from the architecture, the displays and everything else an open centre puts in front of a visitor. What one correctly placed machine genuinely gives you is an even floor rather than a strong end and a dead one, which you can confirm by walking it.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation.
