The porous rattan or fibre reed draws fragrance oil upward through its tiny internal channels - the same physical force that moves water up a tree trunk or ink to the tip of a fountain pen. That evaporation step is where longevity lives or dies. Evaporation rate is governed by well-understood physics: it increases with temperature, increases with airflow over the evaporating surface, and increases with how much surface area is exposed. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources
A windowsill with afternoon sun looks beautiful and smells wonderful — briefly. Direct sunlight heats the oil, raises its vapour pressure, and dramatically speeds up the rate at which molecules escape into the air. A sunny windowsill can reduce a diffuser's lifespan to a fraction of what it would achieve in a shaded spot at the same room temperature.
Heat sources to avoid include: south- and west-facing windows in the Indian summer, a spot near a cooktop or kitchen countertop that gets warm, and any surface above a television or AV equipment that generates heat from below.

Flip less often — once every one to two weeks, not every day
Every time you flip the reeds, the freshly oil-saturated end is exposed to open air and releases a strong burst of scent. This is satisfying. It is also fast. Flipping daily means the oil is continuously working at maximum rate. For longevity, flip only when the scent noticeably fades — typically once every seven to fourteen days, depending on the season and your room conditions.
In summer, when indoor temperatures are higher, scent throws naturally and evaporation speeds up. You may find you barely need to flip at all. In the cooler months, a flip every ten days tends to keep things fresh without burning through the oil.
If you want a stronger hit occasionally: flip the reeds when guests are coming, then flip them back to the dry end again afterwards. One flip for an occasion, one flip to conserve.

Reed count
Use fewer reeds for a subtler, longer-lasting throw
This is the most direct control you have over the balance between intensity and longevity. Each reed is a wick. More wicks drawing oil simultaneously means a stronger scent but a faster drain. A good starting point is 3-5 reeds for a bathroom or bedroom (up to about 15 sq m), 5-7 for a medium living room, and 7-8 for a large or open-plan space. You can always add a reed if the throw feels too subtle, but start low and adjust upwards.
Many people put all the reeds in at once because the full bunch looks symmetrical in the bottle. There is nothing wrong with that aesthetically, but if the bottle is emptying faster than you'd like, simply remove two or three reeds and lay them flat on a small dish beside the bottle.

When you're away
Close the bottle when you leave for the day or go on holiday
The diffuser keeps working whether you are in the room or not. When you go to work for nine hours, travel for a week, or simply close the room, the oil continues to evaporate into an empty space. Removing the reeds and replacing the stopper when you leave is one of the simplest longevity habits to build.
Store the removed reeds flat on a small ceramic dish or in the paper pouch they came in. They will retain their oil load and be ready to reinsert when you return. The fragrance resumes within minutes of putting the reeds back in.
On longer trips: replace the stopper, seal the reeds in a zip bag or their pouch, and store the bottle upright in a cool, dark spot. The oil keeps well and your diffuser will be just as fresh when you're home.

Rotate between rooms to get more from one bottle
A single diffuser does not have to live in one room permanently.
