Two 130ml bottles — one at the entrance, one where guests sit — is ₹2,648. That is the whole function list for a flat of any normal size.
The total
₹2,648
Reeds take about forty-eight hours to saturate along their full length. A bottle opened on the morning of the function is at a fraction of its throw.
The timing
Two days ahead, not two hours
Guests spend the evening in two places: the doorway they arrive through and the room they sit in. Everywhere else is passed through in seconds.
Where people actually are
Two places
Six bottles for one evening is about ₹7,000 of fragrance in rooms nobody enters. Four of them will still be full in March.
What overbuying costs
Do not buy six
Flipping the reeds twenty-four hours before gives a free lift in throw. Flipping them an hour before gives a spike that has faded by the time anyone arrives.

Two bottles. The entrance and the room your guests will sit in, and nothing else — about ₹2,648 for two 130ml. The instinct before a function is to buy for every room in the flat, and it is the wrong instinct, because guests do not occupy a flat the way a family does. They arrive through one door and settle in one room. What actually decides whether the evening smells right is not how many bottles you own but whether they were standing in position two days earlier.
Quick answers — read this first
How many: two. One at the entrance, one in the room guests sit in.

Which size: both 130ml, six reeds each. This is the one occasion where six reeds is correct rather than excessive — people arrive with a fresh nose.

The total: ₹1,299 + ₹1,349 = ₹2,648, and both bottles are still running fourteen weeks later.

When: in position forty-eight hours before, not on the morning.
The short answer
Short answer: Two reed diffusers, both 130ml, on six reeds each: one at the entrance and one in the room guests will sit in. That is ₹2,648 for a Garden Bloom 130ml at ₹1,299 and a Mountain Breeze 130ml at ₹1,349. Put them in place two days before the function, not on the day.
Why not more: Because guests are only ever in two places. The kitchen is busy, the bedrooms are where coats go, the corridor is crossed in four seconds and the balcony is outdoors. A bottle in a room nobody stands in returns nothing, and six bottles for one evening is roughly ₹7,000 of which more than half is spent on air that will not be breathed.
The part that actually goes wrong: Timing. Fibre reeds have to draw fragrance the whole way up their length before they throw properly, and that takes about forty-eight hours. A bottle unboxed on the morning of the function is working at a fraction of what it will do by Sunday. Set both up on the Thursday for a Saturday evening.
Straight answer
How much home fragrance should I buy before a big family function?
1. Two bottles, and they are both 130ml. One at the entrance and one in the room your guests will sit in. A Garden Bloom 130ml at ₹1,299 and a Mountain Breeze 130ml at ₹1,349 comes to ₹2,648. Both run 14–18 weeks, so the money is not spent on an evening — it is spent on a season that happens to begin with your function.

2. Set them up forty-eight hours early. This is the single instruction most likely to change the result. A reed diffuser is not a spray; the fragrance climbs the porous core of each reed by capillary action and only evaporates from the saturated portion. Two days is roughly what it takes for six reeds to wet through and reach a steady throw. Unboxed on the day, a new bottle is at a fraction of its working strength, and people conclude they should have bought more when what they should have done is bought earlier.

3. Use all six reeds — this is the one time that is right. Six reeds is a hall setting, and a function is a hall event. Guests arrive from outside with an unadapted nose, cross the threshold once, and form their whole impression in that first breath. A bedroom setting of three or four reeds is calibrated for someone who lives there. Put six in both bottles for the week of the function, and pull two out afterwards if the living room feels loud on an ordinary Tuesday.

4. Buy nothing for the kitchen, the bedrooms, the corridor or the balcony. The kitchen is running at full output that day and a passive bottle cannot compete with a working hob; we would never claim it removes what is in the air there. The bedrooms are coat rooms for the evening. A corridor is crossed in about four seconds. The balcony is outdoors. That is four purchases avoided, roughly ₹3,000 to ₹3,500 kept, and the evening is not measurably different.

5. The guest bathroom is the only arguable third — and it is not a function purchase. It is the one space besides the entrance that every guest enters alone and notices. But a 50ml at ₹749 bought for Saturday is a permanent improvement bought in a panic. If you want it, buy it — but buy it next month as a normal purchase, not as part of a function list, because that way you will still be running it in November.

TL;DR: two bottles. One 130ml at the entrance and one 130ml in the room guests sit in — ₹1,299 + ₹1,349 = ₹2,648 — on six reeds each, moved into position forty-eight hours before the function so the reeds have saturated. Nothing for the kitchen, bedrooms, corridor or balcony. The timing matters more than the quantity, and both bottles are still working three months later.

The function list, complete
One SOSA reed diffuser From ₹749
Two 130ml SOSA reed diffusers at ₹2,648 is the entire list — Garden Bloom (British rose, night-blooming jasmine) at the entrance because it reads dressed, and Mountain Breeze (Himalayan pine, sage, cedar) where people sit because it stays in the background of a conversation. Six fibre reeds included with each. Composed and made in India, in Pune.

Where guests actually stand — and why that is only two places

A family function moves people through a flat in a pattern that has almost nothing in common with how the flat is normally used. Everybody arrives through the same door within about ninety minutes, everybody puts their shoes in the same two square feet, and then everybody sits in one room and stays there. The kitchen is staff-only that evening. The bedrooms hold coats and handbags and are entered twice. The corridor is a place people are in for four seconds at a time. Fragrance is worth buying where somebody is standing still with an unadapted nose, and on the evening of a function that describes precisely two locations.

The entrance earns its bottle for a reason that has nothing to do with area. It is usually the smallest space in the flat — twenty-five or thirty square feet — and it is the only one every single guest passes through with a nose that has just come in from a stairwell or a lift. Olfactory adaptation is essentially complete within about twenty minutes, so a guest can only ever form a first impression once, and they form it in your entrance. The room they sit in earns its bottle for the opposite reason: it is the largest volume in the flat and it is where they will be for three hours, so it needs a bottle simply to have any presence at all in that much air. Everything between those two points is transit, and transit spaces are measured in seconds of occupancy, not in square feet.

The three decisions before a function

1
DECISION ONE · HOW MANY
Two — and the sixth bottle is the one to worry about
SOSA reed diffusersTwo bottles₹2,648The pattern we see before every festival is a reader buying one bottle per room — five or six of them, somewhere near ₹7,000, for a single evening. Four of those bottles go into rooms that will hold coats or be closed. They do not evaporate faster because there is a party on; they simply sit there, and in March they are still two-thirds full in a bedroom nobody sits in. Two bottles is not a compromise version of six. It is the correct number, because the fifth and sixth are placed where there is no nose to receive them.
The test: stand where the bottle would go and ask how many minutes a guest will spend within six feet of it. Under two minutes, do not buy it.
2
DECISION TWO · WHEN
Forty-eight hours before, not the morning of
Reeds work by capillary action: fragrance climbs the fibre core, reaches the exposed length and evaporates from there. Until the whole exposed length is wet, only part of the reed is contributing, which is why a brand-new bottle smells modest on day one and quite different on day three. Give it two full days. On a Saturday function that means Thursday morning. There is one free trick worth knowing: flipping the reeds end for end brings the fully saturated ends into the air and lifts the throw noticeably — but do it twenty-four hours before, not one hour before. Flipped at the last minute you get a sharp spike that has largely settled by the time the first guest arrives, and you have spent oil on an empty room.
The schedule: Thursday morning, both bottles in position, six reeds. Friday evening, flip the reeds. Saturday, do nothing.
3
DECISION THREE · WHICH SCENTS
Dressed at the door, quiet where people talk
The entrance can take something with presence, because nobody stands in it for more than a minute. Garden Bloom (British rose, night-blooming jasmine) at ₹1,299 for the 130ml is the one that reads as an occasion. The room where people sit needs the opposite quality: something that holds a large volume without becoming a topic of conversation. Mountain Breeze (Himalayan pine, sage, cedar) at ₹1,349 is dry and green and stays underneath the food, which matters when there will be food. Avoid putting anything sweet in the room where the meal is served — it competes rather than complements. And do not run two loud florals in one open-plan space; if your entrance opens straight into the living room with no door, use the same scent in both.

Space by space — what a function actually needs

The pattern of a function evening, room by room, with what each space is worth. Four of these rows come to ₹0, and that is the point of the table.

The function table
Every space in the flat on the evening of a function
Space What it needs How many Cost
The entrance or foyer ★ One 130ml on six reeds — every guest passes through it once, with an unadapted nose One ₹1,299
The room guests sit in One 130ml on six reeds — the largest volume and three hours of occupancy One ₹1,349
The kitchen, on the day of the function Nothing. A working hob outruns any passive source, and we make no claim that fragrance removes what is in that air None ₹0
Bedrooms being used for coats and bags Nothing. Entered twice, for about thirty seconds each time None ₹0
The corridor between rooms Nothing. Four seconds of occupancy per crossing, and it borrows from the rooms at either end anyway None ₹0
The guest bathroom Genuinely worth having — but as a permanent purchase next month, not as part of a function list None today, one 50ml later ₹749, later
A note on all of the above: reed diffuser coverage figures assume a closed room with still air. On the evening of a function the front door opens forty times, every window is likely open and there are thirty people in the flat raising the temperature — so both bottles will read lighter than they did on the quiet Thursday you set them up. That is not a reason to buy a third bottle. It is a reason to set them up on Thursday.

Two bottles, six reeds each, in position by Thursday
The SOSA principle
You are not scenting a flat for a function. You are scenting a doorway and a sofa, and you are doing it two days early.
Every guest arrives through one door and sits in one room. The other four rooms hold coats, food preparation and four-second crossings — and a bottle in any of them returns nothing.

Timing, reeds and where the two bottles actually go

Work backwards from the function by forty-eight hours. For a Saturday evening, both bottles come out of their boxes on Thursday morning and go straight into position — not onto a shelf to be moved later, because a bottle that is carried across the flat on Saturday afternoon has been saturating in the wrong room. Put all six reeds in on Thursday. On Friday evening, flip every reed end for end: the saturated end comes into the air and the throw lifts appreciably, and by Saturday it has settled into a steady state rather than a spike. Do not flip on Saturday. A last-hour flip peaks about twenty minutes later, which is usually while you are still arranging chairs.

Then placement, which is worth more than a third bottle. At the entrance, put the bottle at about waist to chest height on a console or shoe cabinet, on the side away from the door swing — a bottle directly in the draught of a door opening forty times will empty faster and push everything into the stairwell. In the sitting room, place it near the doorway rather than in the far corner, because that is where the air moves and where guests cross a threshold. Keep both off polished wood and away from anything a sleeve can catch: reed oil marks a finish permanently. Stand each on a tray or coaster, and keep them out of reach of children, which at a family function is not a small consideration.

Then stop, and reassess in week two rather than on the day. If the flat feels quiet on Saturday afternoon, remember that you have been living in it for forty-eight hours and your nose finished registering the fragrance somewhere in the first twenty minutes of Thursday. Step outside for half an hour and judge the first breath on returning, or ask the first person who arrives. If it is genuinely faint at the doorway, the fix on the day is to move the bottle nearer the door and away from the fan — not to send someone out for a third bottle. After the function, pull two reeds out of the sitting-room bottle. It will run to eighteen weeks instead of fourteen, and the room will be pitched for a family rather than for thirty guests. When it does run out, a 300ml refill at ₹2,399 fills a 130ml roughly twice, which covers the next two functions as well.

Before a function the useful question is not how many bottles. It is how many days early.

Honest notes before you buy: every figure on this page is the real one and every total adds up — check them. Two things are worth saying plainly before you buy anything. First, coverage claims are steady-state figures: a reed diffuser on six reeds holds a room of up to about 150 sq ft when that room is closed and still. Open a balcony door, run a fan, or raise the ceiling to twelve feet and the same bottle covers noticeably less — not because it is weak, but because coverage is measured in a condition your home may not be in. Second, most homes need fewer units than they buy. A room nobody sits in does not need fragrance; a corridor is a transit space, not a room; and adding reeds to an existing bottle is free, while adding a bottle is not. Reed count is the volume dial — six for full strength, four for a bedroom, two or three for a small bathroom — and it is the first thing to try. SOSA reed diffusers are oil-based and composed and made in India, in Pune; the Sukoon (₹1,899) runs the water-based Hotel Collection (from ₹299) and the two liquids are not interchangeable. Both are phthalate-free and composed to IFRA standards for home diffusion, not for skin or ingestion. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Day & Night Duo ₹1,498
Two 50ml bottles — Morning Freshness and Evening Calm — at ₹1,498 against ₹1,548 bought separately. The saving is small; the real reason to buy it is that it solves two rooms at once with scents chosen to sit beside each other rather than argue.

A note from Sonal

Every year in the fortnight before Diwali somebody writes to ask whether six bottles is enough for a function. It is far more than enough, and it is the wrong shape of purchase. Thirty guests will stand in two places all evening. The bottle you put in the second bedroom will be discovered, still nearly full, when you clear out that room in the spring.

What I would rather you spent the effort on is the calendar. Set both bottles up on Thursday for a Saturday. I have watched people open a box an hour before guests arrive, decide the fragrance is weak, and go out to buy more — when all that was wrong was that the reeds had been wet for fifty minutes. Two days, six reeds, one flip on Friday evening. That is the whole method.

And be a little careful about strength on a night with food. A function is not the moment for the biggest scent you own in the room where the meal is served; the fragrance should be the thing somebody notices at the door and then forgets. Two bottles, ₹2,648, and both of them still working at the next function in three months. A portion of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How many reed diffusers do I need before a family function at home?
Two. One 130ml at the entrance and one 130ml in the room your guests will sit in — around ₹2,648 for the pair — both on six reeds. Buying one per room is the common mistake: six bottles is roughly ₹7,000 and more than half of it goes into bedrooms holding coats and a corridor crossed in four seconds.
How far in advance should I set up a reed diffuser before guests arrive?
Forty-eight hours. Fragrance climbs the fibre reed by capillary action and only evaporates from the wetted length, so a bottle opened on the morning of the function is working at a fraction of its steady throw. Set both bottles up two mornings before, in their final positions, with all six reeds in.
Should I use all six reeds for a function?
Yes — this is the one occasion where six is right rather than excessive. Six reeds is a hall setting, calibrated for people arriving from outside with an unadapted nose. Afterwards, pull two out of the sitting-room bottle: the room will be better pitched for daily life and the bottle will run closer to eighteen weeks than fourteen.
Should I put a diffuser in the kitchen before a function?
No. On the day of a function the kitchen is running at full output and no passive source competes with that. We do not claim a reed diffuser removes or neutralises anything in the air — it adds a fragrance, and in a working kitchen it simply adds it underneath everything else. Spend the ₹749 on the guest bathroom next month instead.
Is it worth buying fragrance just for one evening?
The purchase only looks expensive if you think of it as an evening. A 130ml runs 14–18 weeks, so two bottles bought for a function in August are still working in November and will cover the next function as well. What is genuinely wasteful is the extra four bottles bought for rooms nobody stands in — those really are spent on one night, and then on nothing.
