Founder Diaries · Choosing a Reed Diffuser
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 7 min read Updated October 2026
The six reeds in the box are not an instruction to use all six. I see this mistake more than any other. Someone puts every reed into a 50ml bottle in a small AC bedroom, finds it too much by night, and decides the scent is wrong. It is usually the reed count. A 120 sq ft bedroom and a 250 sq ft hall need very different numbers, and getting that right matters more than the scent you choose.
Quick answers — read this first
How many reeds should I use in a 120 sq ft bedroom? About 3 reeds, as SOSA suggests for a bedroom. In a closed AC bedroom start with 2 and add one after a week if you want more. SOSA Evening Calm (Rs 799), the softest scent in the range, suits most bedrooms.

How many reeds should I use in a 250 sq ft hall? About 5-6 reeds. SOSA suggests roughly 6 for a living room, and a 250 sq ft hall with the fan running usually needs most of them. Start with 5, place the bottle about 1 metre high, and flip the reeds weekly.

Do more reeds make the bottle finish faster? Yes. More reeds release more fragrance, so the oil goes faster. SOSA states about 6-8 weeks for 50ml and about 14-18 weeks for 130ml; heat, airflow and reed count change this.
The short answer
Short answer: use about 3 reeds in a 120 sq ft bedroom, or 2 in a closed AC room, and about 5-6 reeds in a 250 sq ft hall - SOSA Evening Calm (Rs 799) is the softest pick for the bedroom.
The pick: SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuser - ₹799.
Strength: set it with the number of reeds - about 6 for a living room, 3 for a bedroom, 2 for a bathroom - and flip them weekly.
SOSA reed diffusers, softest to deepest (SOSA's own strength guide)Evening Calm - lavender, chamomile · softestGarden Bloom - British rose, night jasmine · medium floralMorning Freshness - Malabar lemon, mint, eucalyptus · brightMountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage, cedar · deep woodyFresh Brew - Coorg coffee, Kerala vanilla · warm and deepest
Strength in a reed diffuser is controlled mostly by how many reeds you use and where you place it - but the scents themselves also differ. This is the order SOSA gives on its own product pages, from the softest to the deepest.
Straight answer
How many reeds should go in a 120 sq ft bedroom, and how many in a 250 sq ft hall?
For a 120 sq ft bedroom, use about 3 reeds; for a 250 sq ft hall, use about 5-6. That follows SOSA's own guidance of roughly 3 for a bedroom and 6 for a living room, adjusted for size and airflow. Every SOSA reed diffuser comes with six fibre reeds, but they are a supply, not a rule. In a closed AC bedroom, start with 2. The air barely moves, so even a few reeds feel present after an hour. If you still cannot notice it after a week, add one. For the bedroom I would choose SOSA Evening Calm (₹799, lavender and chamomile), the softest in our range. A 250 sq ft hall is different: the ceiling fan, the main door and the kitchen all move air, so start at 5 and go to 6 if needed. Garden Bloom (₹799) or Morning Freshness (₹749) suit most halls. If you choose Mountain Breeze (₹849), start with fewer reeds, because it is one of our deeper scents. Flip the reeds about once a week, keep the spare reeds dry in the box, and place the bottle about 1 metre high, away from the fan, AC draught and direct sun. Keep it away from children and pets. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: about 3 reeds for a 120 sq ft bedroom (2 if it is a closed AC room), about 5-6 for a 250 sq ft hall.
The pick for this question: SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuser at ₹799. Start with fewer reeds and add more after a week.
₹799

How to set the reed count for each room

The right number of reeds is not fixed. Three things move it up or down.

1
Closed or open
AC rooms need fewer reeds
A bedroom with the door shut and the AC on holds scent in a small volume of air. Two or three reeds of Evening Calm (₹799) is plenty for 120 sq ft. A hall with the main door opening and closing, and air moving towards the kitchen, loses scent faster, so it needs 5-6.
Tip: closed rooms: start low. Open rooms: start near six.
2
Fans and draughts
Placement can matter more than reed count
A bottle directly under the ceiling fan or in front of an AC vent will feel thin and finish fast. Moved to a shelf about 1 metre high, a little away from the draught, the same reeds often feel more even and last longer. Before you add reeds, try moving the bottle.
3
Scent depth
Deeper scents need fewer reeds
SOSA lists its reed diffusers from softest to deepest: Evening Calm, Garden Bloom, Morning Freshness, Mountain Breeze, Fresh Brew. A deep scent like Fresh Brew (₹849, Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla) on 6 reeds in a 250 sq ft hall can feel heavy; 4 is often enough. Evening Calm in a bedroom can comfortably take its full 3.
Tip: the deeper the scent, the fewer reeds you start with.
The SOSA principle
The six reeds in the box are a supply, not a rule. Start low, live with it for a week, then add one reed at a time.
120 sq ft bedroom: about 3 reeds, 2 in a closed AC room - Evening Calm Rs 799. 250 sq ft hall: about 5-6 reeds - Garden Bloom Rs 799 or Morning Freshness Rs 749. Mountain Breeze (Rs 849): start lower.

The SOSA picks by room and reed count

Here is a quick reed-count guide for the two rooms, with the scents I would use.

The SOSA scent edit
Reed count by room: bedroom vs hall
Scent Why it suits the mood
120 sq ft AC bedroom · Evening Calm Start with 2 reeds, go to 3 after a week if you want more. Rs 799, the softest in the range.
120 sq ft fan-cooled bedroom · Garden Bloom About 3 reeds of rose and night jasmine. Rs 799.
250 sq ft hall · Morning Freshness Start with 5 reeds, go to 6 with the fan on all day. Rs 749 (130ml Rs 1,249).
250 sq ft hall, deeper scent · Mountain Breeze Start with 3-4 reeds of pine, sage and cedar. Rs 849 (130ml Rs 1,349).

For bottle size rather than reed count, see which reed diffuser size you need for a bathroom versus a living room, and if your hall opens into a dining area, read 50ml or 130ml for an open-plan living-dining room. Browse all SOSA reed diffusers.

Most people who think a scent is too strong have simply used too many reeds. Take two out before you give up on it.

A note from Sonal

Most people choose a reed diffuser the way they choose a perfume - by sniffing the bottle. But a room is not a wrist. The same oil reads differently in a sealed AC bedroom, a fan-cooled hall in May and a damp bathroom in July, and the number of reeds changes everything.

So I ask three questions before anyone picks a scent: which room, how the air moves there, and who lives in it. Then the family usually chooses itself - lavender where you rest, citrus where you wake up and wash, florals where guests arrive, woods and coffee where you read and gather. Start with fewer reeds than you think; you can always add more.

I will also be honest about what we do not make. SOSA has no sandalwood, oud or ocean reed diffuser today, so where those come up I will tell you the closest real option rather than pretend. Keep every reed diffuser away from children and pets. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use all six reeds that come in the box?
Only in a larger, airy room like a living room. SOSA suggests about 6 for a living room, 3 for a bedroom and 2 for a bathroom. Keep the rest as spares.
How many reeds for a small AC bedroom?
Start with 2 and go to 3 after a week if you want more. Closed AC rooms hold scent well. Evening Calm (Rs 799) is the softest SOSA scent for a bedroom.
Why can I not smell my reed diffuser after a few days?
Your nose gets used to a steady scent, so step out and come back in. Also flip the reeds about once a week and check the bottle is not in a fan or AC draught before you add more reeds.
Do more reeds mean the oil runs out faster?
Yes. More reeds release more fragrance, so the bottle empties sooner. SOSA states about 6-8 weeks for 50ml and about 14-18 weeks for 130ml, depending on heat, airflow and reed count.
How often should I flip the reeds?
About once a week. Lift them out over a tissue, turn them over and put them back, so drips do not mark furniture. Refresh the reeds every few months.
