Founder Diaries · Jewellery Store Scent Marketing
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated August 2026
The question is usually asked as a square-footage calculation and answered correctly as a room count. What determines how many units a store needs is not its size but how many separately enclosed air spaces it contains - because air does not travel through walls, and a system sized to a floor plan will always under-serve a store with rooms.
Quick answers — read this first
How many diffusers does a jewellery store need? Count separately enclosed air spaces rather than square feet. The main floor takes one correctly sized unit - a Vaayu at Rs 11,999 covers up to roughly 1000 cubic metres. Each consultation room, cabin or enclosed area takes its own small unit, such as a Sukoon at Rs 1,799 or Boond at Rs 799, because air does not travel through walls.

Can one diffuser cover a whole jewellery showroom? One correctly sized unit can cover an open showroom floor. It cannot cover rooms leading off that floor, regardless of its capacity, because a closed door is a boundary that no amount of output crosses. A store with an open floor and three consultation rooms is four air spaces and needs four units, not one large one.

What is the most commonly missed area when sizing a store's scenting? The billing counter. It is usually sited in a corner with poor circulation, often behind a partition, and it is where the visit ends - which is the moment memory weights most heavily. A Boond at Rs 799 there is frequently the cheapest meaningful improvement available in a showroom.
The short answer
Short answer: count separately enclosed air spaces, not square feet - air does not cross walls or closed doors. The main floor takes one correctly sized unit (Vaayu Rs 11,999, up to ~1000 cubic metres); each consultation room, cabin and enclosed area takes its own (Sukoon Rs 1,799 or Boond Rs 799). The billing counter is the most commonly missed space. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for showrooms to ~1000m³; small-store systems from ₹1,799; HVAC from ₹25,999.

A jewellery purchase is one of the most emotional transactions in Indian retail - trust, celebration and aspiration in one visit. Scent marketing gives that visit a signature: one refined fragrance, held evenly across the showroom, running on a schedule no staff member has to remember. Customers experience it as "this store feels premium" - the exact feeling that precedes a high-value purchase.
Straight answer
How do we work out how many units we actually need?
Do it as a room count, not a square-footage sum. Step one: walk the store and list every separately enclosed air space. The main floor is one. Each consultation room with a door is one. The manager's cabin is one. An enclosed billing area is one. A mezzanine that is genuinely open to the floor is part of the floor; one reached through a stairwell with a door is its own space. The reason this is the right unit of counting is simple and absolute: air does not travel through walls, and no amount of output from a floor unit reaches a room with a closed door. Stores that size from a floor plan reliably end up with a well-scented showroom and flat consultation rooms - which is the wrong way round, since the consultation room is where the decision happens. Step two: size the main floor by cubic volume. Length by width by ceiling height, not floor area, because jewellery showrooms range from modest older ceilings to double-height atria and two stores of identical square footage can hold twice the air. A Vaayu (₹11,999) covers up to roughly 1000 cubic metres and is HVAC-independent. Larger buildings step up to an Aangan (₹25,999, 8,000 to 10,000 square feet through HVAC) or a Meenar (₹38,500, 12,000 to 18,000). Step three: one small unit per enclosed room. A Sukoon (₹1,799) or Boond (₹799) with a Hotel Collection blend (from ₹299), run at the lowest setting in the building, since people sit close for hours. Step four: check the billing counter. It is the most commonly missed space in Indian jewellery retail - usually a corner with poor circulation, often behind a partition, and it is where the visit ends. A ₹799 unit there is frequently the cheapest meaningful upgrade in the store. Send a floor plan with ceiling heights on WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: count enclosed air spaces, not square feet - one sized unit for the floor (Vaayu Rs 11,999), one small unit per consultation room (Sukoon Rs 1,799 or Boond Rs 799), and do not forget the billing counter. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The showroom standard most jewellery stores choose: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, one signature on schedule - at ₹11,999. Small-store systems from ₹1,799; flagship HVAC from ₹25,999. Or WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 for a free sizing consult.

The sizing method

The three things that decide the count - the walls, the volume, and the spaces everybody forgets.

Why this works
Count enclosed air spaces, not square feet
1 One unit per separately enclosed space - air does not cross walls 2 Size the main floor by cubic volume, not floor area 3 Consultation rooms get their own small unit, always 4 The billing counter is the most commonly missed space
The showroom standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Small-store systems from ₹1,799.
1
The walls decide the count
Air does not cross a closed door
The sizing error that recurs most often in retail scenting comes from treating a store as a single quantity of space to be covered by a sufficient quantity of output. It is not; it is a set of air spaces separated by physical boundaries, and boundaries are absolute rather than gradual. A unit with capacity far exceeding a store's total volume will still leave a consultation room with a closed door entirely unscented, because capacity is not the constraint - the door is. This produces a characteristic and very common failure: a showroom whose floor is beautifully composed and whose consultation rooms are flat, which is precisely inverted, since the floor is where customers browse for minutes and the consultation room is where they sit for hours making the decision. The counting method that avoids it is mechanical. Walk the store as a customer would, and every time you pass through a door or around a full-height partition, start a new entry on the list. Open mezzanines and floor extensions that share air belong to the floor. Anything you close a door on is its own space and needs its own provision, however small.
Tip: a well-scented showroom with flat consultation rooms is exactly the wrong way round - and it is the most common outcome of sizing from a floor plan.
2
Volume, not area
Why square footage misleads in this format
Once the count is established, the main floor still has to be sized, and here the standard retail habit of quoting square feet is actively misleading in jewellery specifically. Ceiling heights across the format range from around eight feet in an older market shop to fifteen or twenty in a flagship with an atrium, which means two showrooms of identical footprint can differ by more than a factor of two in the air they actually contain. A system specified against the footprint will be correct in one and visibly thin in the other, and the resulting disappointment is usually blamed on the system rather than on the arithmetic. Measure length by width by height, zone by zone, and specify against cubic metres. The Vaayu covers up to roughly 1000 cubic metres, which suits most standard showroom floors; larger and multi-level buildings step up to the Aangan or Meenar. High-ceilinged spaces also introduce a second consideration beyond raw volume: fragrance can stratify above the breathing zone, so delivery placed lower rather than higher usually serves customers better than the same output placed at height.
3
The forgotten spaces
Billing, the passage, and the waiting area
Three spaces are missed with striking regularity, and all three sit at points in the visit where atmosphere does disproportionate work. The billing counter is the most neglected: typically a corner position with poor circulation, frequently behind a partition, and it is where the visit ends - which matters because endings are weighted heavily in how an experience is remembered. A customer who spends two composed hours and then completes the transaction in dead air has had the thread dropped at the anchor point. A Boond at ₹799 fixes it. The passage or stairwell between floors in a multi-level showroom is the second: an enclosed transitional space that is genuinely its own air volume and reads as a gap in an otherwise composed store. The third is the waiting area, where families sit during a long consultation for another member, often for extended periods, and where comfort has an obvious effect on whether the group stays together through hour three. None of these is expensive to address; all of them are invisible on a plan and obvious on a walk-through.
Tip: a customer who spends two composed hours and then pays in dead air has had the thread dropped at the exact point memory weights heaviest.
The SOSA principle
The count is decided by enclosed air spaces, not square footage: one correctly sized unit for the floor, one small unit for every room with a door - and one for the billing counter almost nobody remembers.
Then size the floor itself by cubic volume, because ceiling heights in jewellery retail vary more than footprints do.

Honest notes for jewellery retailers: scent marketing's effects on dwell time, perceived quality and recall are real but moderate - fragrance compounds a well-run store and rescues nothing; premises must be clean, cool and well ventilated first, because scent crowns good air and never substitutes for it. No fragrance harms jewellery: quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not tarnish gold, diamonds or gemstones (silver tarnish is driven by sulphur and humidity, not diffuser oils - keep any machine's mist away from direct contact with open displays as basic practice). The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel or jewellery brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

Jewellery retailers understand atmosphere better than almost any other business - you light every display like a stage, you serve chai in good cups, you train your team to make a bride feel like the only customer in the store. And then, in most stores, the air itself is left to chance: the street, the incense stick, the phenyl from the morning mopping. The most emotional purchase your customer will make this year deserves better air than that.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian jewellery stores is the same architecture the global luxury houses use: one signature, sized to the showroom, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. The machines matter (throw, coverage, scheduling), but the strategy matters more, and it is in every guide we publish. If you want it applied to your specific store, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - I read the store descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

Our consultation rooms are only used part of the day. Do they still need their own units?
Yes, and the intermittent use is an argument for a small unit rather than against one. The room is used for the highest-value interactions in the business - the seated sessions where a family spends two or three hours and reaches a decision - so it is the least sensible place in the store to have flat air, and it cannot borrow atmosphere from the floor because the door is shut. What intermittent use does change is the running pattern rather than the provision: a timer aligned to trading hours keeps the room composed and ready without anybody remembering to switch it on before a family walks in, which is the practical failure mode when this is left to staff. The cost involved is modest at Rs 799 to Rs 1,799 per room plus a blend from Rs 299, and it is difficult to think of a lower-cost improvement to the room where your largest transactions are decided.
We have a two-floor showroom with an open staircase. Is that one space or two?
Usually two, and the open staircase is less connecting than it appears. Air does move between floors through an open stairwell, but it moves by convection rather than by even mixing, which means the upper floor tends to accumulate what rises and the lower floor tends to run thinner than expected, and neither ends up matching the intended level. The practical approach is to treat each floor as its own space with its own provision sized to its own volume, then verify by walking both after installation with a properly reset nose. Where the stairwell itself is enclosed and substantial, it is worth checking separately, since a customer climbing it experiences a transitional moment that can read as a gap. Multi-level showrooms benefit most from the walk-through discipline generally, because plan-based assumptions about air movement between floors are wrong more often than they are right.
Can we start with one unit and add more later?
Yes, and it is a sensible way to proceed provided the first unit goes in the right place. Start with the main floor, correctly sized by volume, because it is the largest space and the one every customer experiences. Then add the consultation rooms, then the billing counter, in that order. What to avoid is starting with several small units scattered across an open floor in the hope that they will add up to coverage - they produce strong pockets and dead ground rather than an even field, and the money is then difficult to recover when the correctly sized unit is eventually bought. Phasing by space rather than by fraction of a space is the principle. If budget is the constraint in the first phase, a floor unit plus a Rs 799 unit at the billing counter is a better opening position than two mid-sized units on the floor alone.
Does the number of units change with how busy the store is?
The provision does not, but the settings might. A crowded floor with the door opening constantly disperses and exchanges air faster than an empty one, which means the same setting reads as lighter during a festival rush than on a quiet Tuesday, and a modest lift during the heaviest hours is reasonable. What does not follow is adding units for peak periods, since a system sized for the space serves it at any occupancy and the extra units become an over-dosing problem in the other eleven months. The other seasonal variable worth knowing is humidity: a monsoon week with doors shut and the air conditioning working holds fragrance differently from a dry summer week with the door open. Review settings quarterly against the season rather than adjusting reactively, and use timer control so the adjustments do not depend on somebody remembering during a busy trading day.
What information should we send to get an accurate answer?
Five things, and they take a few minutes to gather: a rough floor plan or even a sketch showing the layout, the ceiling height in each area, a list of every room with a door including the manager's cabin and any enclosed billing area, whether the space is air conditioned and whether ducting exists, and your trading hours. Photographs help more than people expect, particularly of the entrance, the main floor from the door, and any area you suspect is a dead corner. With that we can specify the count, the sizing and the placement together rather than quoting a unit against a square-foot figure that may not reflect the building. Send it on WhatsApp and the coverage plan comes back with the quotation: +91 96192 18531.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any jewellery brand's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with longer dwell time, improved store and service evaluations, and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives unclean or poorly ventilated premises. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind luxury signature scents. Quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not damage gold, diamonds or gemstones; silver tarnish is driven by sulphur compounds and humidity. SOSA systems: Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (Rs 1,799) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (Rs 3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from Rs 299; refills 100ml Rs 999); SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (Rs 25,999) and SOSA Meenar (Rs 38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
