A reed diffuser is one of the simplest fragrance objects there is: no flame, no switch, no moving parts. The reeds sit in scented oil, draw it up, and let it evaporate into the room. That simplicity is exactly why it suits a bathroom - but a bathroom is warm and humid, which changes how the mechanics behave. Let me explain how it works, and what that means for where you put it.

There is no trick to it, which I like. A reed diffuser is a bottle of fragrance oil with a set of porous reeds standing in it. The reeds behave like a straw made of fibre: through capillary action they draw the oil up their length, and once the oil reaches the exposed part above the bottle it evaporates into the air. That evaporation is what you smell. Because it happens slowly and continuously, you get a steady background scent rather than a burst.
Capillary action
The way liquid climbs up a narrow porous material against gravity - the same force that pulls water up a paper towel. In a reed diffuser it is what carries fragrance oil from the bottle to the exposed reed ends, where it evaporates and scents the room.
Nothing is switched on and nothing burns. That is why a reed is truly low-maintenance: no flame to watch, no plug, no water to top up. The only variables are how many reeds you use - more reeds, stronger throw, faster use - and where you place the bottle.
What a bathroom changes about the mechanics
The principle does not change in a bathroom, but two things about a bathroom do affect it. First, heat. A warm bathroom speeds evaporation, so the scent releases faster and the oil is used up sooner. Second, humidity. This is the one people miss: steamy, humid air slows how quickly the oil evaporates off the reeds, and if the reeds sit in the path of the shower they stay wet and release less.
So a bathroom is a push and pull - heat wants to speed the reed up, steam wants to slow it down. The practical answer is simply to keep the bottle out of the wettest zone, which lets the reeds work as intended.
