Founder Diaries · Smart-Home Scenting · Experience Rooms & Sensory Demonstration
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
Let me deal with the assumption buried in the question before anything else, because almost every enquiry of this kind arrives carrying it. A demonstration suite with five closed rooms is five separate bodies of air, and one machine cannot serve five separate bodies of air. A closed door is a boundary; a machine holds one schedule, one intensity and one nozzle, and it fragrances the volume its own air is connected to and nothing beyond it. So the practical question is not how a single unit can be made to reach every room. It is which rooms genuinely earn a unit, which are better left deliberately unscented, and how the four or five minutes a visitor spends in each one still add up to a single recognisable identity as they walk the circuit.
Quick answers — read this first
The mechanism: one Vaayu ₹11,999 serves one connected volume of up to 1000 m³. Rooms behind closed doors are separate volumes regardless of how small they are, so they cannot be served by a shared unit while those doors are shut.

The shape that works: scent the arrival volume and the largest connected demonstration volume properly, treat any genuinely sealed room as a separate decision, and leave the rest unscented on purpose. Most well-run circuits I see run two or three machines, not seven.

The dose: lower than a home. A visitor is inside each room for minutes and arrives with an un-adapted nose every single time, so threshold is reached easily. Your staff adapt within minutes of opening and will push the setting upward all week — which is exactly what the key-lock exists to prevent.

The honest gap: there is no central control across units. Five machines are five separate Bluetooth commissioning sessions conducted standing beside each one, five settings to record and five refill dates to track.
The short answer
Short answer: zone the showroom by connected air rather than by room count, put a Vaayu ₹11,999 in each volume that genuinely deserves one, run the same accord in every one of them, and vary only the intensity and the hours. One unit covers up to 1000 m³ — roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft at an ordinary ceiling height — and it covers that as one body of air, not as a set of rooms.
What earns a unit: the entrance and reception volume, because that is where the visitor’s nose is working properly; and the main connected living or lifestyle demonstration volume, because it is the largest space and the one people stand in longest. What usually does not earn one: a sealed home-theatre room, a display kitchen that is already open to the living volume, corridors, the technical or rack room, and the store where packaging is opened.
Specification line for a drawing: DC 12V / 1A and 5W at each mounting position, freestanding, wall-mounted or mounted into an HVAC return, under 38 dB, a 400ml sealed residue-free tank lasting up to about 90+ days depending on intensity and hours, auto-stop, key-lock, CE / RoHS / SGS, black or white. Oils must be alcohol-free, water-free cold-air oils such as the SOSA Hotel Collection at 300ml ₹1,799; thick undiluted essential oils are not recommended because they clog the fine nozzle. Project questions: the SOSA contact page.
Straight answer
How should a smart-home showroom with several demonstration rooms be scented?
1. Redraw the plan as bodies of air, then count those instead of rooms. Walk the showroom with every door in the position it is habitually left in during trading hours. Where air genuinely flows between two spaces, they are one zone; where a door is normally shut, they are two, and it makes no difference that the second room is only a hundred and fifty square feet. Vaayu covers up to 1000 m³ of connected volume, and the word doing the work in that sentence is connected.

2. Accept that one machine is one schedule and one intensity. There is one tank, one nozzle and one setting inside the unit, and no way to subdivide its output. SOSA publishes no Wi-Fi, Alexa, Google Assistant, Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, KNX, Crestron, Control4, RS-232, dry contact or API of any kind, so there is no group, no scene, no master unit and no dashboard that could push one setting to the theatre and another to the bedroom demo. Each machine is commissioned on its own over Bluetooth, standing next to it.

3. Decide which volumes are worth the ₹11,999, and say no to the rest out loud. The arrival volume earns a unit because that is the one place in the building where every visitor’s nose is working at full sensitivity. The largest connected demonstration volume earns one because it is where people stand longest and where the ceiling height usually is not standard. Almost everything else is better served by borrowed air from an open door, or by nothing at all.

4. Dose for the person crossing the threshold, never for the person standing in the room. A demonstration room is entered for a few minutes, not lived in for hours, and the visitor arrives un-adapted every time. That is an enormous advantage and it is routinely thrown away, because the staff who set the machine have been in the building since morning and their receptors stopped reporting the level hours ago. Set low, judge it by walking in from outside, then key-lock it.

5. Run one accord everywhere and vary only intensity and hours. A visitor walking a five-room circuit accumulates whatever they pass through; the corridor is where two compositions meet and become a mixture. One composition at two or three levels reads as a single considered building, which is precisely the impression a technology brand is trying to give.

Each Vaayu is ₹11,999, covers up to 1000 m³, runs under 38 dB, draws 5W at DC 12V / 1A, holds a 400ml sealed residue-free tank lasting up to about 90+ days, and is CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: count bodies of air, not rooms. One machine per connected volume, the same accord in all of them, intensity and hours varied. Scent the arrival volume and the main demonstration volume properly, leave the sealed and the borrowed-air rooms alone, and set every level from the doorway rather than from the sofa.
SOSA Hotel Collection cold-air fragrance oils for the Vaayu nebuliser
One unit, one body of air
Vaayu · waterless cold-air nebuliser ₹11,999
Pressurised air shatters undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist that the room’s own air carries — no water, no dilution, no added humidity, no residue, which is why it belongs in a room full of equipment and finished joinery. Up to 1000 m³ of connected volume, under 38 dB, DC 12V / 1A at 5W, a 400ml sealed refillable tank lasting up to about 90+ days, freestanding, wall-mounted or mounted into an HVAC return, auto-stop and key-lock, CE / RoHS / SGS, black or white.

Why five demonstration rooms are five zones, and what that costs

This is the part of the conversation where I lose people, so let me put it as plainly as I can. A cold-air nebuliser does not push fragrance down a duct to outlets you can position. It releases a dry mist into the air already in the space, and after that the air decides where the fragrance goes. Air does not travel through a shut door. So the coverage figure — up to 1000 m³ — describes a volume, not a radius, and the volume stops where the air stops. A showroom of five closed demonstration rooms totalling two thousand square feet is not one job of two thousand square feet; it is five jobs, and the sum of their volumes is irrelevant because they never mix.

1
GEOMETRY · WHERE THE BOUNDARIES REALLY ARE
Doors first, ceiling height second, distance last
SOSA Vaayu cold-air oilsVaayu₹11,999Take the general arrangement drawing and mark it up twice. First the doors, in the position they sit in on an ordinary trading day — and be honest, because the theatre door is shut and the bedroom demo door is usually shut too, whatever the intention was. Second the ceilings, because coverage is stated in cubic metres and showroom ceilings are frequently not standard: an atrium over reception, an exposed services soffit at four metres, a void above the lifestyle vignette. Each of those consumes coverage that the floor area conceals entirely. Distance almost never turns out to be the limiting factor in a building of this size; doors and ceiling height do. When the two mark-ups are finished you have the zone count, and it is nearly always smaller than the room count and larger than one.
The drawing note: scenting zones shown as connected volumes with doors in their normal trading position, ceiling heights annotated where non-standard.
2
CONTROL · WHAT ONE MACHINE ACTUALLY HOLDS
One schedule, one intensity, stored in the unit
SOSA Hotel Collection oilsAsk before specifyingContactThe control story is complete and it is short: a Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, run windows of 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h, a choice of days, adjustable mist intensity, auto-stop and a key-lock. That is all of it, and for a showroom it is genuinely enough — the unit behaves like a correctly commissioned subsystem that nobody touches again. But it runs alongside the rest of the building’s automation rather than inside it, and an integrator planning a demonstration sequence needs to know that before specifying rather than at commissioning. The practical consequence for a multi-room showroom is administrative, not technical: there is no central app across units, no group edit, no synchronised change and no status reporting, so a three-machine circuit is three commissioning sessions, three written records and three refill dates.
The handover line: hours, days, intensity, oil and fill date, one line per machine, kept with the lighting scene schedule so the two do not drift apart.
3
ECONOMICS · WHAT THE MONEY IS ACTUALLY BUYING
Transport and control, not a better smell
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuserMountain Breeze₹849A question worth answering honestly before anybody signs off a multi-unit specification: what is the difference between a ₹849 reed diffuser in each room and a ₹11,999 machine in each zone. It is not that one smells better. What the higher price buys is transport, evenness and control — a scheduled, adjustable, key-locked, even distribution rather than a fragrant zone around an object. A reed is a passive capillary device: oil climbs six fibre reeds and evaporates, so it scents the air near itself and falls away with distance. Put two of them at either end of a demonstration room and you do not get an even room, you get two concentration peaks with a valley between them, because the midpoint is the farthest point from both and neither of them moves any air. In a home that is often perfectly acceptable. On a circuit where a client is being shown what a considered building feels like, it is the difference between a fragrance and a fragranced space.
The trade in one line: reeds give you a scented object, a nebuliser gives you a scented volume, and only one of those can be scheduled and locked.

Minutes, not hours — why a demonstration room is dosed differently from a home

Everything written about home fragrance assumes a resident: somebody who lives in the room for hours, adapts to whatever is in it, and eventually stops noticing. A demonstration room inverts that completely. Your visitor is inside for perhaps four minutes and has never been in the building before, so their nose is at full sensitivity from the first step and reports change far better than it reports steady state. Walking through a doorway is crossing a concentration gradient, low to high in a second or two, which is the single most perceptible thing a fragrance can do. Sitting down in the same room for twenty minutes is a constant stimulus, and receptors adapt to a constant stimulus within minutes whether the visitor wants them to or not.

The consequence is the most useful sentence in this entire family: a showroom should be dosed down, not up, and it costs nothing to do so. Threshold concentration is reached easily by an un-adapted nose, so the level that reads as expensive and deliberate to a first-time visitor is markedly lower than the level that reads as present to the person who has been standing in the room since ten in the morning. That person is your sales manager, and by eleven they will be certain the machine has stopped working. It has not. They have simply stopped receiving the signal, which is exactly what receptors are supposed to do. If they act on that certainty and turn the intensity up, the next visitor walks into a room that has been dosed twice for a nose that needed half.

This is the whole reason I care about the key-lock, and it is why I mention it on every page an operator is likely to read. The ratchet is real, it is one-directional and it happens over about a fortnight: the level goes up on Tuesday because nobody can smell it, up again the following week for the same reason, and then a client remarks that the showroom is a bit much and the machine is blamed. The fix is procedural rather than technical. Set the level, verify it by leaving the building for fifteen minutes and walking back in through the front door, lock it, and give the key to one named person who is not on the floor all day. Restraint is the luxury signal in this category, and it is the one design decision available to you that has no cost attached.

The circuit, room by room, and which rooms earn a machine

A typical multi-room automation showroom read as scenting zones rather than as a room schedule, with what I would specify for each and the mistake each one invites. Relative intensity rather than a number, because the correct absolute setting depends on the connected volume, the ceiling height and how long the space is occupied — and a number published here would be a number invented here.

A demonstration suite, zoned
Which volumes earn a unit, and which are deliberately left alone
Space What it is in volume terms Earns a unit Setting and window The error it invites
Entrance and reception Usually connected to the main floor, often with an atrium above it Yes — the first priority on the whole circuit The highest on the property and still modest; 8h across trading hours Mounting it on the door itself, the most turbulent point in the building
Main living or lifestyle demonstration volume The largest connected volume, frequently double-height and often open to dining Yes — and this is where the 1000 m³ rating is genuinely working A step below the entrance; 8h, aligned with reception Fighting the AC rather than placing the unit in the airflow path
Bedroom experience zone Small, sealed, behind a door that is normally shut Only if the door is genuinely shut all day — and then at a much lower level Markedly lower; a short window, or on demand before a walkthrough Putting a 1000 m³ machine into a 200 sq ft sealed room
Home-theatre demonstration room Sealed, dark, upholstered, very low air exchange Usually no — and that is a considered answer, not an omission Nothing, or a very low setting run before the demonstration rather than during it Scenting it at the same level as the rest of the circuit
Kitchen display Almost always open to the living volume, and nothing is ever cooked in it No — it shares air with the main zone and inherits it Whatever the main volume is set to Adding a food accord to a kitchen that has no food in it
Corridors and the circuit between rooms The connecting air, where everything mixes No — corridors should be the quiet part Nothing at all Treating the corridor as a room and giving it its own character
Rack room, store and unpacking area Sealed technical space, and the source of most showroom smell complaints No — ventilate it and take the packaging off the floor instead Not applicable Reaching for fragrance when the answer is the extract fan and a bin
Specify this page
One machine per connected volume, and the honest smaller option
The SOSA principle
A demonstration room is entered for minutes, not lived in for hours. So the dose belongs to the doorway, not to the sofa.
Which is why a showroom needs less fragrance than a home of the same size, and why the person best qualified to judge the level is the one who has not been in the building all morning.

Making four or five rooms read as one identity

The instinct on a demonstration circuit is to give each room its own character, because each room is showing a different product story and the symmetry is appealing. I would resist it, and the reason is physical rather than aesthetic. A visitor walking a circuit does not experience the rooms separately; they accumulate. Fragrance clings lightly to clothing and hair, corridors carry whatever leaks under the doors, and by the fourth room the person is smelling a blend of everything they have walked through plus whatever is in front of them. Two well-made compositions meeting in a corridor do not read as two ideas. They read as a mixture, and a mixture is the one thing a luxury interior cannot afford to smell of.

So the method I would specify for any multi-room showroom is the same one I would specify for a large house: one accord, held for years, varied only in intensity and in hours. That gives you the thing the brand actually wants, which is recognition — a client who visited the Pune showroom last year and walks into the new one recognises the building before anybody has spoken to them. It also gives you something operationally boring and valuable: one oil to buy, one refill cadence to manage, one thing to get right. A 400ml tank runs up to about 90+ days depending on intensity and scheduled hours, so a three-zone circuit settles into roughly a quarterly refill routine that one person can do in an afternoon.

Placement then decides whether the identity is even or patchy. Put the unit in the path the air already takes rather than against it, at height, and not directly beside a return that will pull the mist out of the room before it has travelled. Where a floor is served by a single air-handling system, the HVAC-return mount is the most elegant answer available and worth designing in early: mounted into the return, one machine distributes across a whole connected floor evenly instead of producing a strong pocket near a shelf. That is a genuine mechanical integration point and I am careful to describe it as exactly that, because digital integration is a separate claim and one that SOSA does not make.

One machine is one schedule and one intensity. Five closed rooms are therefore five machines or four rooms you have chosen to leave alone — and choosing to leave them alone is a specification, not an omission.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

The showroom specification, in order — and the honest gap

What I would write into a project file for a multi-room demonstration suite, in the order the information is needed. The last row states plainly what this system does not give you, because a specifier who discovers a limitation at commissioning remembers it for years and one who is told at drawing stage simply designs around it.

The circuit specification
What to decide, in what order, and what there is no product answer to
Step What to record Why it belongs in the file Reference
1. Zone count from connected volume Cubic metres per zone with doors in their normal trading position and ceiling heights annotated It is the only figure that decides whether two rooms are one zone or two Up to 1000 m³ per unit
2. Which zones are scented and which are not A written list of the rooms deliberately left unscented, with the reason beside each So that nobody adds a machine to the theatre in year two because it looked like an oversight Restraint as a decision
3. Mounting and supply per unit Freestanding, wall or HVAC-return, with a low-voltage point at that exact position and height Retrofitting the supply means a visible cable or a compromised position DC 12V / 1A, 5W
4. Accord, intensity and window One accord across the circuit; relative intensity per zone; 1h / 4h / 8h / 24h and days, aligned across neighbouring zones Staggered windows create the worst boundaries in a shared-air building Cold-air oils, 300ml ₹1,799
5. Refill cadence and key-lock holder Fill date per unit, and one named person holding the key-lock for the whole showroom A 400ml fill runs up to about 90+ days; a setting anyone can nudge will be nudged upward 400ml sealed tank, key-lock
6. The commissioning walk Set the whole circuit at one low level first, then walk it from the front door and adjust at each threshold Levels judged from inside a room are judged by an adapted nose and are always too high Under 38 dB, auto-stop

Honest notes for specifiers: each Vaayu is an independent appliance at ₹11,999 — waterless cold-air nebulising, with no water, no dilution, no added humidity and no residue — controlled only by its own Bluetooth app and onboard buttons. SOSA publishes no Wi-Fi, Alexa, Google Assistant, Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, KNX, Crestron, Control4, RS-232, dry-contact or API integration, so units cannot be grouped, addressed, triggered or monitored from any home-automation control system; they run alongside the automation rather than inside it. Machine counts are never published as a formula — reason from connected volume, ceiling height, doors, HVAC layout and occupied hours. Sukoon ₹1,899 is an ultrasonic machine that dilutes oil in water, adds humidity and can leave a fine mineral deposit; Megh ₹3,499 covers only about 215 sq ft and is never a coverage upgrade over Sukoon. Thick undiluted essential oils are not recommended in Vaayu because they clog the fine nozzle. A scent machine adds fragrance; it does not clean or purify air, and a fragrance does not remove an existing smell — deal with the source, then the ventilation, then the scent. Composed in Pune by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Proportionate for one small sealed demonstration room that genuinely must be scented on its own, and the wrong choice anywhere near racks, screens or fine joinery, where the waterless machine is the correct answer.

A note from Sonal

The showrooms I remember are not the ones that had a machine in every room. They are the ones where somebody had decided, in advance and in writing, which rooms were going to be quiet. A circuit with three fragranced volumes and four silent ones has a rhythm to it; a circuit with seven fragranced rooms has none, because the visitor never gets a moment of relief and so never registers any of them as an event. The corridor is not wasted space in this discipline. It is the pause that makes the next room legible.

The second thing I would say is about the people who work in the building. Everything I have written about dosing down is really a statement about them, not about the visitor. Your team is the most adapted set of noses in the city by half past ten in the morning, and they are the ones standing next to the machine when a client says something polite about the smell. That combination produces an upward drift that nobody intends and nobody notices, and it is the single commonest way a well-specified showroom ends up smelling like a duty-free hall by the third month.

So I would rather sell two machines and a locked setting than five machines and an argument. The specification is boring on purpose: one accord across the circuit, the intensity varied by a step at most, the hours aligned, the key in one person’s drawer, and a walk from the front door once a month to check that the building still says what you meant it to say. Everything is composed in Pune, and a portion of every order funds a girl’s classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Can one scent machine cover a showroom with five demonstration rooms?
Not while those rooms have their doors shut. A Vaayu ₹11,999 covers up to 1000 m³ of connected volume, and a closed door is a boundary regardless of how small the room behind it is. Where several spaces genuinely share air — a reception flowing into a living demonstration and on into a dining vignette — that is one zone however many rooms the drawing names, and one unit will serve it well.
How many machines does a multi-room showroom need?
I will not publish that as a formula, because the honest inputs are connected volume, ceiling height, door positions, HVAC layout and the hours each space is occupied, and a specifier who knows those will reach a better number than a rule of thumb. What I will say is that most well-run circuits I see are two or three units rather than one per room, because the arrival volume and the main connected demonstration volume do the great majority of the work. Send a plan through the contact page if you want a second opinion on a specific building.
Can all the machines be controlled together or set from one place?
No. Each unit holds its own schedule, days and intensity, set over Bluetooth standing beside it or from its onboard buttons, and SOSA publishes no Wi-Fi, Alexa, Google Assistant, Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, KNX, Crestron, Control4, RS-232, dry-contact or API integration of any kind, so there is no dashboard, no group edit and no status reporting across units. The practical answer is to plan a single commissioning walk and a single refill day for the whole showroom and to keep a written record per machine.
Should each demonstration room have its own fragrance?
Usually not. A visitor walking a circuit accumulates everything they pass through, and the corridors are where two compositions meet and become a mixture. One accord at two or three intensities reads as a single considered building and gives you recognition across visits and across branches, which is what a brand actually wants from scent. It is also far easier to run: one oil, one refill cadence, one thing to get right.
How strong should a demonstration room be?
Lower than you think, and lower than a home of the same size. Every visitor arrives with an un-adapted nose and is in the room for minutes, so threshold is reached easily, while your staff adapt within minutes of opening and will be certain by mid-morning that the machine has stopped working. Set the level from the doorway rather than from inside the room, verify it by leaving the building for a quarter of an hour and walking back in, then use the key-lock so the setting cannot drift upward over the following fortnight.
