The question always arrives as a question about time: how do I keep this room pleasant all evening. But nothing in a washroom degrades because of the hour. It degrades because of the number of people who have been through it, and once you swap those two variables round the answer changes completely - and stops being a fragrance answer.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I keep a high-traffic washroom pleasant all evening? By treating traffic as the variable rather than time. A washroom does not degrade at nine o'clock - it degrades at the two-hundredth visit, and on a full Saturday that can arrive before nine. So the three things that actually hold the room are an extraction rate that clears it between guests, a housekeeping round timed to the covers rather than to the clock, and a fragrance source that is continuous and low. A stronger fragrance does none of those and makes the room worse.
Why not just turn the fragrance up for the busy hours? Because the problem a busy washroom has is not a shortage of fragrance. It is a room that is not clearing fast enough, and adding a louder second smell to a room that has not cleared gives you two smells rather than one clean one - a guest reads that combination correctly and immediately. There is also the exposure question: a guest is in your building for two or three hours and may visit twice, so the level has to read as pleasant on the second visit, not just on the first.
What does the right setup cost? One SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, covering about 270-320 sq ft with three 15ml fragrances included, placed in the washroom lobby so one source serves both doors at one written setting. A SOSA Boond at ₹899 does a single room but runs roughly six hours a fill, so somebody tops it up mid-service. A Vaayu at ₹11,999 for washrooms alone would be the wrong buy.
The short answer
Short answer: by fixing the variable, which is traffic rather than time. A washroom used two hundred times in an evening needs an extraction rate that clears it between guests and a housekeeping round timed to covers rather than to the clock. Then a continuous low-level fragrance source rather than a stronger one, because a louder second smell in a room that has not cleared reads as two smells. A Sukoon at ₹1,899 in the lobby, or a Boond at ₹899.
The pick: one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) in the washroom lobby, running continuously at the lowest perceptible level with the setting written down - about 270-320 sq ft, three 15ml fragrances included. For a single washroom, a SOSA Boond at ₹899, or a Morning Freshness reed at ₹749 where nobody will own a top-up.
Next step: tell us your covers on a full Saturday, how many washrooms serve them, and whether the extract fan runs continuously or on a switch, and we will tell you whether this is an extraction question, an interval question or a source question - Ask for a restaurant scenting plan.
The first line reorganises the whole problem. Once you stop asking what happens at nine o'clock and start asking what happens at the two-hundredth visit, two of the three answers stop being about fragrance at all.
The continuous source for a busy washroom - tap for the specification
How do I keep a high-traffic restaurant washroom pleasant all evening?
Stop treating the evening as the variable, because it is not. A washroom does not degrade at nine o'clock; it degrades at the two-hundredth visit, and on a full Saturday that visit can arrive well before nine while on a quiet Tuesday it never arrives at all. Once you swap time for traffic, the answer reorganises itself, and two of its three parts stop being about fragrance. First, extraction. A washroom's extract has one job during service, which is to clear the room's air between guests, and if the room is being used every ninety seconds it has ninety seconds to do it. Find out whether your extract fan runs continuously through service or whether it is on a light switch that the first cleaner turns off, and whether it is ducted to outside air or into a ceiling void. Whether the rate is adequate for your traffic is a question for you and your ventilation contractor - I can tell you that it is the first question and I will not give ventilation or health-department advice on the answer. Second, the housekeeping interval, timed to covers rather than to the clock. A round at seven and another at ten is a schedule built on a clock. A round every eighty to hundred covers is a schedule built on the thing that actually loads the room, and it should include the drains and the bins rather than only the surfaces. Third, and last, a fragrance source that is continuous and low rather than occasional and strong. This is where most operators start and it is the least powerful of the three. A spray at handover is a dose: strong for ten minutes, gone in forty, absent for the busiest hour. A continuous low source holds a steady level all evening, and that steadiness is the whole point - it is also kinder, because a guest is in your building for two or three hours and may visit twice, so the level has to read as pleasant the second time. One SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, about 270-320 sq ft with three 15ml fragrances included, sits in the washroom lobby and serves both doors at one setting you write down - and write it down you must, because a cleaner, a host and a manager will all touch it in one evening. A SOSA Boond at ₹899 covers a single room but runs roughly six hours a fill, so it needs a mid-service top-up on the rota; a Morning Freshness reed at ₹749 is continuous with nothing to refill and nothing to switch off. A Vaayu at ₹11,999 for washrooms alone would be the wrong buy. And the standing limits: fragrance is never a mask, this is an ambience decision like lighting, and the dining room, the chef's table and the pass stay unscented, with no source anywhere its output can reach a table. Ask for a restaurant scenting plan and tell us your Saturday covers.
Traffic is the variable, not the hour. Get an extraction rate that clears the room between guests, a housekeeping round timed to covers rather than the clock, and then a continuous low source - a ₹1,899 Sukoon in the lobby or a ₹899 Boond in the room - rather than a stronger one. A Vaayu for washrooms alone would be the wrong buy.
For a busy washroom the source is one SOSA Sukoon in the lobby - ultrasonic cool mist, about 270-320 sq ft, three 15ml fragrances included - run continuously at the lowest perceptible level, with that setting written down. ₹1,899. One small room instead? A Boond at ₹899, topped up mid-service.
Both of these run continuously, which is the property that matters here. The difference is how long a fill lasts and therefore whether somebody has to touch it during service. The images link to the product pages.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, with three 15ml fragrances included, at ₹1,899. One source in the lobby, one setting, and a tank that comfortably carries a service rather than needing attention halfway through. Hotel Collection oils are ultrasonic and suit it; they are never a Vaayu refill.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser rated to about 150 sq ft, USB powered, roughly six hours a fill, at ₹899. Ample coverage for one room, and the honest caveat is the six hours: across a twelve-hour day somebody refills it, so it belongs where the housekeeping round is already reliable.
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffusion covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances, at ₹1,899. Place it in the lobby rather than inside a cubicle, out of the door's draught, and set it at the lowest level that is still perceptible as the door opens - then write the setting on a card behind it, because a cleaner, a host and a manager will all reach it during one service. It is water-based and adds a little moisture to the room, which is usually irrelevant in a ventilated washroom and worth knowing. Hotel Collection oils at ₹299, ₹999 and ₹1,799 are ultrasonic only and never a Vaayu refill. Fragrance oil is flammable: keep oil and machine away from open flame and heat.
In descending order of power, which is the reverse of the order most operators use them in. The third one is the only one I sell, and I would rather you fixed the first two first.
1
Lever one: extraction
The room has ninety seconds to clear before the next guest
At two hundred visits across a five-hour dinner service, a washroom is occupied roughly every ninety seconds, which is all the time the extract has to reset the room. Two things go wrong. The fan is on the light switch, so somebody turns it off, or it is ducted into a ceiling void rather than to outside air, so the room's air is being moved around rather than out. Both are common and both are cheap to discover: stand in the room with the door shut and hold a tissue near the grille. Whether the rate is right for your traffic is a question for your ventilation contractor - my part is telling you it is the first question, ahead of anything I sell.
Tip: Check the fan at nine on a Saturday, not at eleven on a Monday. It is often switched off by then.
One Sukoon ₹1,899, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
A cleaning schedule built on the clock treats a quiet Tuesday and a full Saturday identically, which is why the room fails on exactly the night it matters. Build it on covers instead: a round every eighty to a hundred, which on a busy night means three or four rather than two. And make the round include the things a surface wipe skips - the bins washed rather than emptied, water down the floor gully so the trap does not dry out, and the urinal drainage checked rather than assumed. This is the lever with the most leverage and the lowest cost, and no fragrance can substitute for it at any level.
Tip: Write the round against a cover count on the rota. A clock time will be ignored on the night it matters most.
One Morning Freshness reed diffuser ₹749, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
Steady and quiet beats occasional and strong, every time
A spray at handover is a dose, not a level: strong for ten minutes, gone in forty, and absent through the busiest hour, which is precisely backwards. A continuous source at a low setting holds the same level from seven until close, which is what steadiness means and what a guest actually registers. Set it at the lowest point where it is still perceptible as the door opens, then leave it alone - remembering that a guest is in the building for two or three hours and may be back, so the level must read as pleasant the second time rather than only impressive the first. If anybody says the room is too strong, turn it down or move the source. I will not offer any explanation about anybody's health.
Tip: Set the level on a full night, from the doorway, not on a quiet afternoon from arm's length.
One Boond ₹899, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.
A washroom does not degrade at nine o'clock - it degrades at the two-hundredth visit, and once you measure it in covers rather than hours, two of the three answers stop being about fragrance.
The lever with the most leverage in this room is a cleaning round timed to covers, and it costs nothing.
One source, two doors, one setting: A Sukoon in the washroom lobby at ₹1,899 runs continuously and serves both washrooms off it, with three 15ml fragrances included.
Here is a full Saturday written out the way I would put it on a card for the manager on duty, with covers rather than clock times doing the work.
The SOSA plan
A busy washroom through one full service
The point in the evening
What to do
Before service
Room checked empty, water down the floor gully so the trap holds, bins washed and relined, extract confirmed running, source level checked against the written setting.
First eighty covers
Nothing to do. The room is clearing between guests and the source is holding a steady level. Resist the temptation to touch the dial because the room is busy.
Around a hundred covers
First mid-service round: surfaces, bins, floor, and a look at the gully. This is the round that a clock-based schedule misses, and the one that holds the room.
Around two hundred covers
Second round, and the honest test: walk in from the corridor rather than from inside. If the room reads wrong now, the answer is the interval or the extract, not the dial.
Late service
Traffic drops, the room recovers on its own if extraction is adequate. A continuous source is still holding the same level it held at seven, which is the point of it.
The dining room, throughout
Unscented, permanently, along with the chef's table, any tasting-menu room and the pass - and no washroom source anywhere its output can drift towards a table.
If the room reads wrong even when it is empty, traffic is not your variable at all and you should read why a washroom still smells bad after adding air freshener, which is a flat no on fragrance and then the real list. And if you are choosing between a bottle and a machine for this room in the first place, the head-to-head is in reed diffusers vs automatic scenting for washrooms. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.
A single room, refilled mid-service: The SOSA Boond at ₹899 is ultrasonic and rated to about 150 sq ft, and runs roughly six hours a fill - so the top-up goes on the rota.
Every operator who has asked me to make their washroom stronger for the busy hours has actually been asking me to make it clear faster, and I do not sell that.
The right source for a busy washroom is decided by how long a fill lasts and by whether anybody will touch it during service. Hotel Collection oils at ₹299, ₹999 and ₹1,799 are ultrasonic only and are never a Vaayu refill, and cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately, so the 4 × 100ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA in writing. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA restaurant specification
Extraction, then the interval, then a continuous low source
Fix extraction first, build the cleaning round on covers rather than on the clock, and then hold a single low level all evening rather than chasing the busy hour with the dial. This is an ambience decision like lighting; it is never a mask for a trap, a gully, urinal drainage, a bin or a failed extract; and the dining room, the chef's table, any tasting-menu room and the pass stay unscented, with no source placed where its output can reach a table. Extraction rates, drainage and anything sited near a food-preparation area are questions for you, your consultant and your local authority rather than for me, and I will not describe any fragrance as food-safe or safe around food. Fragrance oil is flammable, so keep oil and machine away from open flame and heat. And I will not advise on ingredient sensitivity or anybody's health: if a guest says a room is too strong, turn it down or move the source. Ask for a restaurant scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
The question is always phrased as a question about the evening - how do I keep this room pleasant all night - and I used to answer it as a fragrance question, which was the wrong answer given politely. What changed my mind was walking a restaurant at ten o'clock on a Saturday and then again at ten o'clock on a Tuesday. Same room, same hour, same bottle, two completely different rooms. The difference was four hundred people.
So I answer it with covers now. A washroom is loaded by traffic, and traffic decides everything: how fast the room needs to clear, how often somebody has to be in there with a cloth, and whether a low steady level is enough. The extraction has ninety seconds between guests on a busy night and five minutes on a quiet one, and no setting on any machine I sell changes that. The cleaning round is the lever with the most leverage and it costs nothing - build it on a cover count rather than a clock time and it will happen on the night it matters. Then, and only then, a continuous source at a level low enough to be pleasant on a guest's second visit. Turning it up for the busy hour is the one move that reliably makes the room worse.
On hardware I would rather undersell. A washroom lobby is a Sukoon at ₹1,899, one source for both doors. A single room is a Boond at ₹899 if somebody will own the top-up, or a Morning Freshness reed at ₹749 if nobody will. A Vaayu at ₹11,999 is for a connected envelope of foyer, corridor and washroom lobby, and for washrooms alone it would be the wrong buy. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
How do I keep a high-traffic restaurant washroom smelling pleasant all evening?
By treating traffic as the variable rather than time. A washroom degrades at the two-hundredth visit rather than at nine o'clock. So the three levers are an extraction rate that clears the room between guests, a housekeeping round timed to covers rather than to the clock, and a continuous low-level fragrance source rather than a stronger one. The first two are more powerful than the third, and the third is the only one SOSA sells.
Should I turn the fragrance up during the busy hours?
No. A busy washroom is not short of fragrance, it is short of air changes, and adding a louder second smell to a room that has not cleared gives a guest two smells rather than one clean one. There is also the exposure question: a guest is in the building for two or three hours and may visit twice, so the level has to read as pleasant on the second visit. Set it low, write the setting down, and leave it.
How often should a busy washroom be cleaned during service?
Build the interval on covers rather than on the clock - a round every eighty to a hundred covers, which on a full night means three or four rounds instead of two. Make the round include what a surface wipe skips: bins washed rather than only emptied, water down the floor gully so the trap does not dry out, and urinal drainage checked. The exact schedule is yours and your housekeeping team's call, but covers is the right unit.
Is a Boond enough for a busy washroom?
For coverage, easily - it is rated to about 150 sq ft and a washroom is usually well under that, at Rs 899. The honest caveat is the tank: roughly six hours a fill, so across a twelve-hour day somebody has to refill it, and that top-up belongs on the rota rather than in somebody's memory. If nobody will own it, a Morning Freshness reed at Rs 749 runs 6 to 8 weeks unattended, and a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 covers a lobby.
Would a Vaayu hold a busy washroom better?
No, and for washrooms alone it would be the wrong buy at Rs 11,999. It is rated to 1000m3 and a washroom is a few cubic metres, so it would idle at the bottom of its range, and it would not change the two things that actually decide this room - the extraction rate and the cleaning interval. A Vaayu earns its place only when a washroom lobby, a corridor and a foyer form one connected envelope.
Nothing to refill, nothing to switch off: A Morning Freshness reed at ₹749 holds a steady low level for 6-8 weeks from 50ml, with no plug and no dial.
Covers, not clocks - then a level that never changes

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.
Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper extraction, grease management, drainage, cleaning and air change and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask or remove another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a guest's decision or any commercial outcome. Dining rooms, chef's tables, tasting-menu rooms and food-preparation areas are left unscented, no machine is placed where its output can reach a table or a pass, no fragrance is described as food-safe or safe for use around food, and the operator's own kitchen consultant and local food-safety and fire authority govern anything sited near a kitchen. Fragrance oil is flammable and is kept away from open flame and heat. The chef's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
