How should a chiropractic rehabilitation area handle sweat and occupancy odours?
By fixing the surfaces and the airflow, in that order, and by buying no fragrance for that room. The reason this problem persists in so many centres is that it gets filed as an air problem, and air is the one part of it that is a symptom rather than a cause. Work backwards from where the smell is stored. A rehabilitation floor is full of absorbent things in direct, repeated, warm contact with skin: mats, bolsters, resistance straps, belts, plinth and bench covers, towels, and the foam under every vinyl surface. Skin oils transfer onto and into those materials, they stay there, and they keep giving off from there long after the client has left. That is why the smell is often worse when you put your face near a surface than when you stand in the middle of the room - and that single observation tells you it is not an ambient problem at all. On top of that sits the airflow question. Most rehabilitation rooms in Indian clinics are air-conditioned rather than ventilated, which means the air is being cooled and recirculated but very little of it is being replaced. A room with few air changes does not clear between sessions; it accumulates, so the room at seven in the evening is holding some part of everything that has happened in it since nine. Three mechanisms sit behind almost every rehabilitation-floor complaint I am sent. Working out which one is yours takes an afternoon and costs nothing.

Source one
Textile and foam hold what skin leaves on them
Mats, bolsters, straps, belts, bench covers and towels are in warm repeated contact with skin, and the oils that transfer do not sit politely on the surface. They work into the weave and into the foam beneath a vinyl skin, which is why a cover can be visibly clean and still be the strongest thing in the room. The test is simple and slightly undignified: get your face close to a mat, a strap and a bolster in turn, first thing in the morning before anyone has used them. If any of them is stronger than the room, you have found your source, and you now have a laundry and replacement question rather than an air one. A cleaning wipe changes what a surface smells of; it does not undo what is inside it.
Tip: Do the surface check with a cold nose, before you have been in the building twenty minutes. After that you have adapted and you are no longer a useful instrument.

Air conditioning cools a room; it does not empty it
Most rehabilitation rooms I am sent photographs of have a split unit and no dedicated extract. A split system moves air around a room and cools it, but it introduces very little from outside, so what the room is holding at four in the afternoon includes a share of everything that happened at ten, at noon and at two. That accumulation is why the floor smells fine early and tired late even when nothing about the cleaning has changed. The fix is air changes during occupancy rather than after it: an external door propped during a gap, an exhaust fan run through the busiest hours, or a window opened at a scheduled point in the afternoon. It is inconvenient, which is why it rarely happens, and it is also the single most effective thing on this page.
The Vaayu is waterless, which matters in a building that already produces its own moisture - but it moves no air and replaces none, and it is not a ventilation answer.

Storage, which is where a solved problem comes back
The most common thing I find in a centre that has already tightened its cleaning is a cupboard. Mats coiled and stacked while still slightly damp, straps looped into a box, towels waiting in a closed bin for the evening collection, spare bolsters pushed under a bench where nothing dries. A closed warm space holding damp textile is a source that runs all day and all night, and because the door is shut nobody smells it directly - they only meet it in the room, diluted, and blame the room. Open the cupboard with a cold nose. If it is stronger inside than out, the storage is your problem and it is solved with hooks, an open rack and a lidless laundry bag rather than with anything else.
Tip: Store mats on edge and hang straps. Anything coiled, stacked or lidded while damp keeps its own weather.

This is the page in the cluster that earns SOSA the least, and it is the one I am most confident about. Every rehabilitation floor I have been sent has turned out to have at least one of three things: a cupboard with damp textile in it, a room with no way for outside air to get in during the day, or a single set of covers being cycled slightly too fast to ever be properly dry.
The reason fragrance is so tempting here is that it is the only fix you can buy on a Tuesday and have working by Friday. How do I tell whether it is the mats or the room?
Get close to individual surfaces with a cold nose, first thing, before anyone has used them. If a mat, strap, bolster or cover is stronger than the room standing up, the surface is the source. If everything is equally mild up close but the room is heavy, it is an air-change question instead.
How many sets of covers and towels should a rehab area own?
Enough that nothing damp is ever reused or stored waiting to be washed - in practice a second complete set, so one is always in circulation and one is always dry. Most centres I look at are short by exactly one set, and it is a cheaper fix than any machine.
Does an ultrasonic diffuser help or hurt in a room like this?
It is the wrong direction. Ultrasonic units work by aerosolising water, so they add moisture to a room that is already dealing with damp textile. If you eventually want a source at the front of the building, the waterless route is the sensible one in a centre with a working floor in it.
Should I schedule the wipe-down between clients or at closing?
Between clients. Skin oils lift off a surface far more easily in the first minutes than after they have had a whole day to settle into foam and weave. Closing-time cleaning keeps a room looking maintained while letting the actual source build up through the day.
