Most brands choose a signature the way they choose a laminate: samples on a table, four people with opinions, a decision by lunchtime. It produces a bottle rather than a signature, and you can tell them apart about a year later, when nobody in the business can say what the setting is meant to be.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I choose a signature scent for a modular kitchen brand? Five steps, in order. Derive the register from your displays and price point rather than from taste. Shortlist two, never five. Run each for a week in the real showroom at a low setting, in ordinary trading. Ask the designers who breathe it nine hours a day, and treat a yes-but as a no. Then lock it and write it down - profile, level, timer hours, on a card by the machine. The fifth step is the one everyone skips and the only one that turns a purchase into a signature.

Why only two on the shortlist? Because you can only test one thing at a time in a shared volume of air, and a week each is already a fortnight of trading. Five candidates means either a rushed comparison or a month and a half of an inconsistent showroom, which is worse than any of the five would have been. Two is what the process can actually carry, and the register you derived in step one will have narrowed the field to about that anyway.

What does the process cost? Almost nothing until the end. Test with reeds: Mountain Breeze at ₹849 and Morning Freshness at ₹749 will settle a direction for under ₹1,600 total. Hardware comes last: under about 750 sq ft one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy; from about 1,500 sq ft one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999.
The short answer
Short answer: in five steps: derive the register from your displays and price point, shortlist two rather than five, run each for a week in the real showroom at a low setting during ordinary trading, ask the designers who work there and treat a yes-but as a no, then lock the setting and write the profile, level and timer hours on a card by the machine.
The pick: test the shortlist with reeds - Mountain Breeze (₹849) and Morning Freshness (₹749) - then hold the winner with one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) past about 1,500 sq ft.
Next step: send your floor plan, a photograph of the main display run and your average ticket, and we will suggest the two candidates worth a week each - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

Straight answer
How should a modular kitchen brand actually go about choosing a signature scent?
In five steps, and the order matters more than any individual choice within them. Step zero, which is not really a step but a gate: if the showroom currently smells of laminate, adhesive, MDF or new joinery, stop. Off-gassing is a curing problem answered by ventilation and time, and running a fragrance trial on top of it tests nothing except which candidate combines least badly with plywood. Trade unscented until it has gone. Step one: derive the register. Write down what your brand claims in one sentence, walk the display floor and note what dominates - timber and warm palettes, or lacquer, stone and cool light - and add your price point. Those three settle the direction before anyone opens a bottle: dry woods for warm timber-led rooms, the bright dry end run low for white and minimal ones, and dry in both cases, because dryness rather than the fragrance family is the real variable here. Everything edible is excluded at this step and never returns. Step two: shortlist two. Not five. You can only test one thing at a time in a shared volume of air, so five candidates means either a superficial comparison or six weeks of an incoherent showroom. Step one will usually have left you with about two anyway. Step three: a week each, in the real showroom, at a low setting, during ordinary trading. Not in an office, not from a blotter, not at a supplier's premises. Your own light, your own materials, your own air conditioning, your own customers sitting through a ninety-minute consultation. Reeds make this cheap - Mountain Breeze at ₹849 and Morning Freshness at ₹749 settle a direction for well under ₹1,600. Judge from the consultation seat at minute ninety rather than from the doorway, and never on the first morning, because a fragrance's first day tells you almost nothing about its fifth. Step four: ask the designers. This is the measurement, and it is not yours to take. Your own nose adapts within twenty minutes of arriving, so you are the least qualified person in the building. The people who sit at that table nine hours a day, six days a week, hold the only honest reading available, and a yes-but from them is a no. Ask them separately rather than in a group, because a group produces agreement rather than information. Step five: lock it and write it down. This is the step almost everybody skips and the only one that turns a purchase into a signature. On a card by the machine: the profile, the intensity setting, the timer hours, and the date it was set. Put the key-lock on. Review it on foot once a quarter by walking in from the street, and change the number only when the building changes - a refit, a new air-conditioning arrangement, a season that genuinely alters how the room reads. Without step five you have bought a fragrance; with it you have a discipline, which is the entire point of the word signature. Only now does hardware arise, and it is decided by cubic volume rather than by the choice you just made: under about 750 sq ft one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, where a Vaayu would be the wrong buy at roughly seven times the volume you have; from about 1,500 sq ft one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, waterless, so it adds no moisture to the room and leaves no residue on surfaces - a fact about the machine rather than a claim about your finishes. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries, referrals or order value, and a supplier who offers you a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send the floor plan.
Fix the fit-out smell first. Then: derive the register from displays and price point, shortlist two, a week each in the real showroom at a low setting, ask the designers and treat a yes-but as a no, then lock it and write the number down. ₹1,899 or ₹11,999 at the end.
The hardware is the last decision, not the first. Past about 1,500 sq ft it is one SOSA Vaayu - adjustable intensity to hold the level you selected, a key-lock to keep it, and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers for trading hours. ₹11,999. Below 750 sq ft, the ₹1,899 Sukoon instead.

The three steps people skip

Nobody skips choosing a fragrance. They skip the three steps that make the choice mean something a year later.

1
Skipped: the real showroom
A blotter tells you about a fragrance; a week tells you about a room
Choosing from samples at a table is choosing a top note in an air-conditioned meeting room, and a top note is the part that has gone within an hour. What you actually live with is how the thing behaves at low intensity, in your light, against your materials, with your doors opening, at four in the afternoon on the fifth day. Run each candidate for a full week in ordinary trading, and judge from the consultation seat rather than the doorway. Reeds make this cheap enough that there is no excuse: ₹849 and ₹749 covers a two-week trial with change left over.
Tip: Never judge on the first morning. Day five is the honest day.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

2
Skipped: asking the staff properly
The people who breathe it all week hold the only real measurement
Owners take their own reading and it is worthless, because the nose adapts within about twenty minutes of arriving and after a fortnight you cannot detect your own showroom at all. Your designers are in it nine hours a day, six days a week, and they are the closest thing to an instrument you have. Ask them individually rather than in a meeting, because a group converges on whatever the owner seems to prefer. And set the bar properly: a yes-but is a no, and one person who finds it too much at the end of a long day is enough to bring the level down.
Tip: Anyone on the floor should be able to switch it off in seconds, without asking permission.

One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

3
Skipped: writing it down
An unrecorded setting is a purchase, not a signature
This is the difference between a brand that has a signature and one that owns a diffuser. Write the profile, the intensity number, the timer hours and the date on a card kept by the machine, and put the key-lock on so the number survives a year of well-meaning hands. Then audit it on foot each quarter by walking in from the street with an outdoor nose. The whole value of a signature is that it does not change, and nothing that is not written down survives a change of floor manager, a refit, or three months of somebody nudging the dial before visits.
Tip: Date the card. A setting with no date is a rumour.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

The SOSA principle
A signature is not chosen in a meeting. It is chosen by two ordinary trading weeks in your own building, judged by the people who breathe it all day, and then it is made real by being written down and locked.
Everything before step five is shopping. Step five is what turns it into a discipline.
SOSA Vaayu
Adjustable intensity: Step three needs a genuinely low setting, and step five needs it to be a number you can record. ₹11,999.

The process, step by step

Pin this up. It takes about a fortnight of trading and costs under ₹1,600 before the hardware decision arrives.

The SOSA plan
Choosing a signature scent for a kitchen brand, in order
The step What to do
Step zero - the gate
If the showroom smells of its own fit-out, ventilate and wait. A trial run over off-gassing tests nothing. Total spend at this stage: ₹0.
Step one - derive the register
One sentence of brand claim, plus what the displays are made of, plus the price point. Dry in every direction, and nothing edible ever enters the shortlist.
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuserStep two - shortlist two
Two candidates, not five. A shared volume of air can only be tested one thing at a time, and step one has usually narrowed it this far already.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuserStep three - a week each, live
In the real showroom at a low setting during ordinary trading. Judge from the consultation seat at minute ninety, and never on day one.
Step four - ask the designers
Individually, not in a meeting. They hold the only honest measurement in the building, and a yes-but is a no.
SOSA VaayuStep five - lock it and write it down
Profile, level, timer hours and date on a card by the machine, key-lock on, audited on foot each quarter. This is the step that makes it a signature.

Whether a kitchen showroom needs a signature at all - and what the word should honestly mean - is argued in whether a kitchen showroom should have a signature fragrance. And the question that always follows step one is how closely the register should track the interior, which is answered in whether a signature fragrance should match its interior design. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
Key-lock: The written setting only holds if the dial cannot be nudged, which is the whole reason the lock exists. ₹11,999.

SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 holds the profile and the number you selected, with the key-lock on and the timer set to trading hours.

The bottle that wins in a meeting is almost never the bottle that wins after a week on the floor, which is why the most useful advice I give is to stop having the meeting.

Run the process in your own building rather than at a supplier's, take the measurement from your designers rather than from yourself, and finish by writing the number down. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or sample storage; it is never used to cover another smell - not laminate, not adhesive, not cooking - and a showroom with an off-gassing or extraction problem fixes that first, with ventilation and time. And plainly: no one can promise you that ambient scent moves footfall, enquiries, referrals or order value, and a supplier quoting you a figure is selling. Ask for a retail scenting plan before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal

The way most brands choose a signature is the way they choose a laminate: samples on a table, four people with strong opinions, a decision before lunch. It is an efficient process for a finish, because a finish is judged by looking at it. A fragrance is judged by living in it, and nothing about a blotter in a meeting room tells you how a register behaves at low intensity in your own building on a Thursday afternoon in the fifth day of a heatwave.

So my method is deliberately slow in the middle and cheap at the front. Derive the register before you open anything, cut the field to two, then give each one an ordinary week in the actual showroom. Judge it from the consultation seat at minute ninety rather than from the doorway, because that is where your customer is when it matters. And then hand the decision to the people who work there. I have never regretted asking a design team and I have often regretted not asking them, because the owner's nose is the least reliable instrument in the building and the team's is the most.

The step I have to push hardest on is the last one, which is just a card by the machine with a profile, a number, the timer hours and a date on it. Without it you have bought a diffuser. With it you have something that will still be true in two years, through a change of floor manager and a refit. Under about 750 sq ft the machine is a Sukoon at ₹1,899, or a Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 if you would rather have no schedule at all. From about 1,500 sq ft, one Vaayu at ₹11,999, key-locked. Bulk pricing, GST or corporate invoicing, AMC, warranty and installation terms are not published, so ask us rather than assume. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a signature scent for a modular kitchen brand?
Five steps in order: derive the register from your brand claim, your displays and your price point; shortlist two rather than five; run each for a full week in the real showroom at a low setting during ordinary trading; ask the designers who work there and treat a yes-but as a no; then lock the setting and write the profile, level, timer hours and date on a card by the machine.
Can we choose from samples in a meeting instead?
You can, but you will be choosing a top note in an air-conditioned meeting room, and the top note is the part that has gone within an hour. What you live with is how a register behaves at low intensity in your own light, against your own materials, at four in the afternoon on the fifth day. Reeds at Rs 849 and Rs 749 make a proper two-week trial cheap enough that there is no reason to skip it.
Who should make the final decision?
The designers and floor staff hold the measurement, and the owner should hold the veto rather than the vote. Your own nose adapts within about twenty minutes of arriving, so after a fortnight you cannot detect your own showroom. Ask the team individually rather than in a group, because a group tends to converge on whatever the owner appears to prefer, which is information you already had.
What if the showroom is new and still smells of the fit-out?
Then the process has not started yet. Off-gassing from laminate, adhesive, MDF and new joinery is a curing problem solved by ventilation and time, and a trial run on top of it only tells you which candidate combines least badly with plywood. Ventilate hard, run the air handling on fresh air where you can, trade unscented, and begin when the room smells of nothing in particular.
How often should the signature be reviewed?
Review the setting on foot each quarter by walking in from the street with an outdoor nose, and change the number only when the building changes: a refit, a new air-conditioning arrangement, or a season that genuinely alters how the room reads. The profile itself should hold for years, because the entire value of a signature is that it does not change.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own original interpretations; SOSA is an independent brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel named for reference. Coverage, fragrance usage and running cost depend on the space, settings and hours of use, and are confirmed on a consultation.
