Why is being a friend an advantage? Because you can ask about the square footage and the layout directly, which is the only information that decides this gift.
Should friends pool for it? Often the best form. Five people at Rs 2,400 reaches the machine and no individual creates an obligation.
You can ask the built-up area. Almost nobody else can
There are two things a friend has that nobody else buying for this occasion does, and both of them make the gift better without making it more expensive. The first is permission to ask a direct question. This particular gift is decided almost entirely by one number - the built-up area of the house - and asking for it is completely normal between friends and mildly odd from anybody else. A cousin asking how many square feet the villa is sounds like they are pricing it. A friend asking sounds like a friend. And it settles everything: over roughly two thousand square feet the machine is the correct product, under it the machine is the wrong size of thing and reed diffusers are the right gift. Ask about the layout at the same time - how many floors, whether the living and dining run together, whether the living room is double height - because a tall room adds cubic volume much faster than the floor area suggests, and a stairwell moves air between floors all day. Neither of those facts is obvious from a number alone. The second advantage is the search. Friends were there for the part nobody else saw: the two years of looking, the site visits on Sunday mornings, the project they nearly bought and then did not, the loan sanction that took six weeks, the plot with the good trees that went to somebody else, the argument about whether to wait another year. Relatives arrive at the finished house; friends arrived at the bad ones. That is material for a note, and two specific sentences about the search will outlast every object in the pile. Write about the Sundays, or the one they let go, or the fact that they held out for the corner plot. It costs nothing and nobody else can write it. On what to buy, the honest shape is this. A villa over about two thousand square feet is the strongest case in this whole catalogue for the SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees, because villas have exactly the two features room products struggle with: multiple floors linked by a stairwell, and usually a tall living space. It is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated for up to a thousand cubic metres - about two thousand to three thousand square feet - that uses pressurised air to put a dry mist into the air the house is already moving, so the result is one consistent strength across floors, hallways and the landing rather than a series of scented pockets. It ships with four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included, so it works the evening it is opened. It runs under thirty-eight decibels, has a four hundred millilitre tank that lasts weeks, and is controlled by a Bluetooth app or its own buttons with one, four, eight and twenty-four hour run windows, day selection and adjustable intensity. It lies flat on a shelf or mounts on a wall, weighs nine hundred grams, and comes in black or white. Refills afterwards are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, and never the water-based Hotel Collection, which is a different system for ultrasonic machines. Pooling is the right form for a friend group and it is underused. Eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees from one person, at a normal friendship distance, quietly asks for something comparable in return - the recipient does that arithmetic within seconds of knowing the price, and it is the one way a generous gift creates a small debt. Five friends at two thousand four hundred rupees each reaches the same machine with none of that, and a group gift at a milestone housewarming is a natural and well-understood form in India. It also means the card can be from everybody, which for a dream villa - the kind of purchase a whole friend group has been following - is more appropriate than a single name. If the villa is under two thousand square feet, or if the family would rather not have a device, the reed diffusers are genuinely the better gift rather than the cheaper one. Morning Freshness is seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty; Garden Bloom and Evening Calm are seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine; Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew are eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine. For a villa, put the larger size in the entrance and on the landing, where more air moves, and a duo set from one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight rupees lets the ground floor and the first floor smell different, which is a nice idea in a house with stairs. Two things to say and two to avoid. Do say that the scenting starts a few weeks in: a new villa smells of paint, varnish, polish and new wood, and those need open windows rather than fragrance. Do say what the machine covers in square feet, because you asked and it will be obvious you did. Do not place it or set it up for them - in a house they spent two years finding, the decisions are theirs. And if there is a griha pravesh, keep the gift separate from it: a house ceremony is a religious occasion, nothing here is a religious item and no ritual significance is claimed. Fragrance is a finishing touch, never a fix.
The one question that decides this gift, and friends get to ask it
One question asked, one gift pooled, one note nobody else can write.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
