Why do dad-themed gifts miss? Because they address an identity he is three weeks into rather than the person he has been for decades. They get a laugh and then need a shelf he does not have.
What fits his week? The car and whatever he carries. He is doing the driving, the fetching and the late errands, and the car is where he sits alone for twenty minutes before coming in.
Gift the man, not the title
There is a category of gift that only appears when somebody acquires a new label, and it is worth examining because it dominates this particular shelf. When a man becomes a father, a whole genre of objects becomes available: the mug, the slogan shirt, the keyring, the framed word, the novelty item that announces the role. All of them are addressed to the title. None of them is addressed to him. Now consider the timeline. He has held this title for three weeks. He has been the person he actually is for three decades - with a taste in things, a way of dressing, a set of preferences that were fully formed long before any of this, and which have not been replaced. A gift that speaks only to the newest three weeks of somebody's life is, structurally, a gift to a stranger who happens to have his address. That is why those objects reliably get a laugh at the moment of opening and then go into a cupboard: the laugh is real, and so is the fact that the object has nothing to do with him. The alternative is not complicated. Give him something he would have liked anyway - something that would have made sense as a birthday present last year and will make sense as one next year - and let the fit with his current life be a bonus rather than the theme. That is the whole method, and it produces better gifts in about thirty seconds of thought. It helps to know what his current life looks like, though, because the good news is that several things he would have liked anyway happen to fit it unusually well. In the months after a first baby, most households split into an inside half and an outside half, and the father usually takes a large share of the outside. He is driving - to the paediatrician, to collect relatives, to a pharmacy at eleven at night, to work and back on much less sleep. He is carrying things. He is answering the door and managing visitors. And in between he is holding a small person at thirty centimetres, in rooms where somebody is trying to sleep. The car is the strongest single answer, and it is chronically overlooked because it does not feel ceremonial. It should. A large share of his next two years physically happens there, and it quickly becomes the one place he sits by himself for twenty minutes before coming inside - and the place a baby who will not settle gets driven around late at night. A hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine to five hundred and nine rupees improves several hundred hours of that for the price of a takeaway. Jasmine is four hundred and forty-nine, Lavender and Sandalwood four hundred and seventy-nine, Icy Mint four hundred and eighty-nine, Lemon four hundred and ninety-nine, Vetiver, Sea Breeze and Oud five hundred and nine. Two-piece combinations are eight hundred and ninety-nine to nine hundred and forty-nine, 15ml refills three hundred and ninety-nine to four hundred and forty-nine if he has a holder, a Mysore Orange Blossom car spray five hundred and forty-nine, and a three-piece discovery set six hundred and ninety-nine, which has the pleasant property of letting him choose his own direction. At the premium end the SOSA Safar at three thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a waterless car perfume diffuser - proper equipment, and a serious gift for a man about to do an extraordinary amount of driving. Nebuliser refills are one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams. The second target is whatever he carries, where format matters more than fragrance. A solid perfume at four hundred and fifty-nine to five hundred and forty-nine rupees is fifteen grams of alcohol-free balm in a flat compact, applied with a finger. It cannot spill in a bag or a glovebox, there is no cap to unscrew and lose in a dark car park, it survives months of being carried around, and it works with one hand - which sounds like a detail and is not, three weeks into this. Titan at five hundred is Arabica coffee, roasted wood, black pepper, frankincense and leather. Beast at five hundred and forty-nine is smoked whiskey, roasted coffee, spicy leather, amber resin and vanilla bark. Sway at four hundred and fifty-nine is dark cherry, espresso, cocoa, red patchouli and vanilla husk. Siren at four hundred and eighty-nine is black cherry, espresso, warm vanilla and cedar smoke. Sterling at four hundred and sixty-nine is coconut milk, almond nougat, white amber and powdered musk. An alcohol-free attar at three hundred and seventy-nine to three hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the quieter option, and it suits this period for a structural reason rather than a sentimental one. It is undiluted perfume oil with no alcohol carrier, so it opens slowly and stays within an arm's length rather than projecting across a room. An alcohol carrier evaporates fast and pulls the fragrance outward, which is how projection is engineered in a spray - useful in a restaurant, less useful in a car with one other adult or a room where somebody is asleep. Nawaab at three hundred and ninety-nine is the most obviously masculine, a white oud composition built with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate, which is worth saying plainly rather than letting the word oud carry weight it has not earned. Ameeri at three hundred and eighty-five is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood. And if he has worn one designer fragrance for years, the Inspired By range from five hundred and ninety-nine keeps that direction in an alcohol-free build and names its inspiration honestly - Tabac Noir for tobacco and vanilla, Samundar for aquatic and marine, Khayaal for sparkling bergamot and neroli, Zaffran for saffron with sweet amber. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any other house. Three things to skip. The title genre, for the reason at the top of this page. Anything that is a project - a kit, a gadget to configure, something to assemble - because he has spent months assembling things from instructions written by optimists and is behind on all of them. And anything for the baby, which is a delivery rather than a gift to him; SOSA makes no products for babies or children in any case, and nothing in this range is intended for a nursery, a cot, a pram or a child's belongings. One closing observation. Almost nobody will give him anything at all, because no shop has a shelf for fathers and so the purchase is never prompted. That means whatever you bring is not competing with anything, and the bar is not high: a good object, chosen for the person rather than the label, handed over without a joke attached. He will remember who gave him the only thing he got.
Things he would have liked anyway
Things that would have been good gifts last year and happen to suit this year too. Format matters more than fragrance - a glovebox and one free hand decide a lot.

Versailles
When somebody has a baby, the gifts arrive in a wave and almost every one of them is for the baby. Clothes the child outgrows in six weeks, toys for an age they have not reached, blankets in a cupboard that already has nine. It is all kind and it is all well meant. But two adults have just gone through something enormous, and by the end of the first month neither of them has received a single thing addressed to them.
That is the whole reason this section exists. We do not make anything for babies, and nothing we sell is meant for a nursery or for a child's things - we make fragrance for adults. What we can do is give somebody an answer when they say: everybody is buying for the baby, what do I give her, or him, or the two of them. Usually the answer is something small, consumable and completely undemanding, because a new parent has no free hands, no spare surface and no appetite for anything that needs setting up.
One honest thing. If the person you are buying for is pregnant, be careful with personal fragrance. A great many people find that what they want to be near changes during those months, and a bottle somebody cannot go near is a worse gift than nothing at all - so either choose something for their home or their car, or let them pick it themselves later. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and tell us who the adult is and what you know about them, and we will tell you honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
