Why do dinner and experience gifts fail? Because they need both of them free, awake and out of the house at the same time, which for a few months is the rarest combination in their week.
What works instead? Anything asynchronous. A room gift is used by whoever is in the room; a car gift is used by whoever is driving. Neither requires them to coordinate.
They are rarely both free at the same time
There is an assumption buried in nearly every gift aimed at a new couple, and it stops being true about a week after the birth. The assumption is that they are a unit that does things together: that there is an evening, that both of them are in it, and that a gift can be enjoyed jointly. For the first few months, what actually exists is a rota. One of them is with the baby while the other sleeps, or cooks, or works, or drives somewhere. They hand over, they swap, they pass each other in a hallway. There are genuinely shared moments, but they are short, unscheduled and fairly rare, and neither of them can predict when the next one will be. This is why the classic couple gifts underperform here. A dinner voucher needs both of them free, awake, out of the house and organised enough to have arranged childcare - four conditions that currently almost never coincide. An experience needs a booked date, which needs a predictable day. A board game, a bottle of something to open together, a thing to do on an evening: all of them assume the evening exists. None of those gifts is bad; they are simply addressed to the couple these two will be again in about a year, rather than the couple they are this month. The alternative is to think asynchronously. Ask whether the gift still works if only one of them is present - and if the answer is yes, it works twice as often, because either of them can use it whenever they happen to be the one in the room. That is a low bar for the right kind of gift and an impossible bar for the wrong kind, which makes it a useful filter. Home fragrance passes this naturally, because a room is used by whoever is in it. A coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees is lit by whichever of them is downstairs at nine o'clock, and it improves that room for that person - and for the other one when they come down at eleven. It belongs to nobody in particular, needs no coordination, and takes exactly one action to use. Lead-free eco wick, phthalate-free, hand-poured in Pune, fifteen to eighteen hours. Misty Mornings is Nilgiri orchid and sun-ripened nectarine, Bookshop is cedarwood, sage and lemon, Evening Walks is frankincense and tonka, Cozy Corner is spiced pear and golden honey. Wax melts at four hundred and seventy-four rupees are the flame-free version for a household that would rather not have one, with a ceramic burner at five hundred and sixty-nine. The best asynchronous gift in the range is a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees, because it requires no action from either of them after the first minute. Morning Freshness is seven hundred and forty-nine, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm seven hundred and ninety-nine, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew eight hundred and forty-nine. It uses its own alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action and runs two or three months on its own. In a household where nobody can be relied upon to remember anything, a gift that works without being remembered is a specific kind of good. Put it at the entrance or in the living room, which are the rooms they will be receiving visitors in for months. Not a nursery: SOSA makes no products for babies or children, and nothing in this range is intended for a nursery, a cot, a pram or a baby's belongings. The car is the other asynchronous space, and it is the most under-used gift for new parents. A hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine to five hundred and nine rupees is used by whichever of them is driving, which in these months is constantly - the paediatrician, the pharmacy at eleven, relatives collected, the shopping, and the drive around the block at midnight with a baby who will not settle. It has a second advantage worth knowing: in most households the father does a large share of that driving, and he has almost certainly received nothing at all from anybody, because no shop has a shelf for fathers. A gift nominally for the couple that he will mostly use is a quiet correction. Jasmine is four hundred and forty-nine, Lavender and Sandalwood four hundred and seventy-nine, Icy Mint four hundred and eighty-nine, Lemon four hundred and ninety-nine. Two-piece combinations at eight hundred and ninety-nine to nine hundred and forty-nine give them a register each. If you would rather give something personal without picking sides, give something that divides. The Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five rupees is three alcohol-free 12ml attars in one box, so each of them takes one they chose rather than one you assigned - and with three registers the chance that both find something they like is far better than with a single bottle. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk; Ameeri is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood; Mastani is night jasmine and Damask rose; Nawaab is a white oud composition with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate. Each is undiluted perfume oil with no alcohol carrier, so it opens quietly and stays within an arm's length rather than filling a room - which many people find is what they want around a small baby, as a matter of comfort and preference. Nothing on this page is health, medical or safety advice, and no product is described as safe or unsafe around anybody in particular. If you want to spend more, the rule holds: a 130ml reed diffuser from one thousand two hundred and forty-nine rupees is the larger asynchronous gift, refills at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine for three hundred millilitres and three thousand four hundred and ninety-nine for five hundred. A complete ultrasonic system - the Sukoon at one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine rupees with the water-based Hotel Collection concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine, three to six drops per tank - works too, provided it arrives complete; the three systems do not interchange and reed oil must never go into a machine. One last thought, and it is free. If you want to give them something together, the right gift is not an object at all: it is two or three hours in which both of them are off duty at the same time, delivered by you, at their house, with no conversation required. Say it plainly - I will come on Sunday afternoon and hold the baby, you two do whatever you want. Almost nobody offers that, and it is the only gift on this page that actually makes them a couple again for an afternoon.
Gifts that work in shifts
Everything here works with only one of them present, which means it gets used roughly twice as often. The car item also quietly reaches the father.

Versailles
When somebody has a baby, the gifts arrive in a wave and almost every one of them is for the baby. Clothes the child outgrows in six weeks, toys for an age they have not reached, blankets in a cupboard that already has nine. It is all kind and it is all well meant. But two adults have just gone through something enormous, and by the end of the first month neither of them has received a single thing addressed to them.
That is the whole reason this section exists. We do not make anything for babies, and nothing we sell is meant for a nursery or for a child's things - we make fragrance for adults. What we can do is give somebody an answer when they say: everybody is buying for the baby, what do I give her, or him, or the two of them. Usually the answer is something small, consumable and completely undemanding, because a new parent has no free hands, no spare surface and no appetite for anything that needs setting up.
One honest thing. If the person you are buying for is pregnant, be careful with personal fragrance. A great many people find that what they want to be near changes during those months, and a bottle somebody cannot go near is a worse gift than nothing at all - so either choose something for their home or their car, or let them pick it themselves later. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and tell us who the adult is and what you know about them, and we will tell you honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
