Why a passive source loses to moving air

A reed diffuser has no fan, no heater and no reservoir of pressure. Its entire output is set by how fast fragrance oil can evaporate from the exposed length of six fibre reeds — a surface roughly the size of a few matchsticks. That output is fixed within a narrow band. You can nudge it up by adding reeds or by warming the room, and that is the whole of your control. This is the question where the honest answer costs me a sale, so let me give it plainly: if your flat is properly cross-ventilated for most of the day, a reed diffuser in that airflow will underdeliver and will not last as long as the label suggests.
