Which is safest? Reed diffusers and the machine, since both are flame-free. A candle is an open flame and needs care.
Which needs the least from the recipient? A reed diffuser - reeds in and it works, with no socket, schedule or app.
Three products, three different units of time
The three products get compared on price because they sit on the same shop, and that framing hides what actually separates them, which is how long each one occupies in a household and how much of the house it claims. Start with the candle. A candle is an event. Somebody decides to light it, it works for the hours it burns, and it is extinguished - which means its span is an evening and its territory is the couple of metres around it. That sounds like a limitation and it is exactly right for some gifts: a dinner, a quiet evening, a veranda in the cooler months, a seasonal present like Christmas where the point is that the fragrance belongs to a time of year and then stops. The woodenwick candles at nine hundred and forty-nine rupees and five paise come in gardenia, jasmine, sandalwood and lavender, and soy gift sets start at six hundred and ninety-nine rupees. A candle also has the best unwrapping of the three: it reads instantly as a present, it looks like something, and nobody needs it explained. The trade-off is that it is an open flame and it demands care - kept clear of curtains, paper, dry decorations and anything aerosol, on a stable heat-proof surface, trimmed, and never left unattended or burning near where children or pets move. It is also the wrong tool for a coverage problem: a candle will not make a house smell of something, and in a large room it works around the table rather than across the space. Next, the reed diffuser. A diffuser is a season. It works continuously without anybody doing anything, for weeks and often a few months, and its territory is one bounded room with still air - which is precisely what a bedroom, a study, a hall or a dining room is. It needs no electricity, which matters in rooms where every socket is taken; it makes no noise; it has nothing to set; and it cannot be forgotten in the way a candle can, because it does not need to be started. It is also the most honest fit for most homes, because most homes are sets of rooms rather than single volumes. The registers are Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres and one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty, Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus, which reads clean and suits an entrance or a room near a kitchen; Garden Bloom at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine, British rose with night-blooming jasmine; Evening Calm at the same, lavender with chamomile, the usual bedroom choice; Mountain Breeze at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine, Himalayan pine with sage and cedar, dry and resinous and good with wood; Fresh Brew at the same, Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla, for a study or dining room. Duo sets at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees put two registers in two rooms and are where most gifts in this category should sit. Refills are three hundred millilitres at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine rupees or five hundred at three thousand four hundred and ninety-nine, and one ownership fact worth passing on: when a diffuser slows down, the answer is usually fresh reeds rather than more oil, because reeds saturate over weeks. Then the machine, which is neither an event nor a room but a condition. The SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees holds a whole connected volume at one even strength, continuously and on a schedule, so the house simply is a certain way rather than being made that way on particular occasions. That is a different kind of thing to own, and it is the only one of the three that addresses the spaces nobody can put a product in - the entrance, the internal corridor, the stairwell, the landing, the void above a double-height room, which are exactly the spaces that make a large home feel unfinished. It is a waterless cold-air nebuliser: pressurised air breaks undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist carried by the air the home is already moving, with no water, no heat, no dampness and no oily film. Coverage up to a thousand cubic metres, stated as about two thousand to three thousand square feet. Four hundred millilitre tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill. Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, one, four, eight and twenty-four hour run windows, day selection, adjustable intensity. Under thirty-eight decibels, twelve volts at five watts, nine hundred grams, black or white, freestanding on a shelf or mounted on a wall or an HVAC return, auto-stop and key lock, CE, RoHS and SGS, made in India, and four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included so it runs the first evening. Its refills are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred - and never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic diffusers. Three things follow from thinking in spans rather than prices. First, these are not substitutes, and the best answer for a large home is often two of them rather than the most expensive one: a machine for the connected space, a bottle in the bedroom behind its closed door, and a candle for evenings on the veranda. Second, the expensive option is only correct where the span it occupies is wanted - a household that would rather have fragrance as an occasional pleasure than as a permanent condition should be given candles and bottles, whatever the size of the house, because the best product is the one that gets used. Third, the machine belongs only in a genuinely large connected home of roughly two thousand square feet or more; below that it over-scents, which in a sealed house is worse than anywhere. And one closing note that applies to all three: none of them is a solution to a smell that has a cause - damp, a bin, recirculated cooking, a dried-out floor-drain trap. Fix the cause and then choose your span, because fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
