What is the white dust from a diffuser? It is minerals from hard tap water. The ultrasonic mist carries tiny mineral particles that settle as a pale film on furniture near the unit. Softer, filtered or RO water largely prevents it.
What water should I use instead? Filtered or RO water, at room temperature. It has fewer minerals, so the mist is cleaner, there is less white dust, and the machine needs descaling less often. Never use hot water in the tank.
Hard water and the white dust problem
The reason tap water is a mixed answer comes down to what is dissolved in it, and in much of India that is quite a lot.
This white dust is not dangerous and it wipes away, but it is a real, visible sign that your water is doing more work in the machine than it needs to. It also means the plate scales up faster, so you will be descaling more often to keep the mist strong.
My honest read: if you live somewhere with soft water, tap water is fine and you may never see the dust. In a hard-water city, you will notice it, and switching to filtered water is the simplest fix.
The better water, and the rules that always hold
Whatever your city, a couple of choices make the diffuser cleaner and longer-lived, and a couple of rules should never be broken.

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine.
